Rhys Ifans is persuasive and Charlotte Church game in this raucous Dylan Thomas adaptation
Concluding the 100th anniversary celebrations of Dylan Thomas’s birth, here is a ramshackle visualisation of the poet’s 1954 radio drama. Thomas’s Under Milk Wood has spawned diverse adaptations and tributes – stage productions, a ballet, Stan Tracey’s revered jazz suite and a 1972 film by Andrew Sinclair, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Peter O’Toole and the original radio narrator, Richard Burton.
Probably few other versions are as raucous as this offering from Kevin Allen, who made his name with 1997’s laddish Cardiff romp Twin Town. That film’s star Rhys Ifans persuasively channels Burton’s night-deep tones in his voiceover, as well as playing the haunted seadog, Captain Cat. Also starring is Charlotte Church, more pert than earthy as local siren Polly Garter, but undeniably game for the revelry.

Actor Keith Allen talks about screaming popes, his daughter Lily – and the time he lived on a theatre stage
How did you get into acting?
I'd done performance art sporadically from about 1976 – very personal street things on my own. Acting seemed like a natural step from that. But I didn't really want to "be" anything: presenter, comic, actor. I just wanted to perform.
What was your big breakthrough?
I don't think I've ever broken through.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
A one-man show I did years ago called Whatever Happened to the AA Man's Salute. It was improvised, and ran for three or four weekends at the then Albany Empire in London. I was a squatter at the time, so I moved into the theatre and lived on the stage. I'd do the show right next to my bed.
Do you suffer for your art?

In the name of the father … please help us find the best film clips on the subject of dads
Mothers have been covered on Clip Joint, so now it's the fathers' turn. In life, being a father is the most challenging and important role a man will ever play. Even in the movies some fathers get it right and some get it very wrong. But the fundamental power a father figure has on a film narrative taps into the universal understanding of our own experiences with our fathers, perhaps inspiring us to value what is important and to remember that we will biologically only ever have one.
1. Daniel Hillard – Mrs Doubtfire
One of Robin Williams's finest performances, Mrs Doubtfire deals with the harsh realities of a marriage breakdown and the offspring tug of war that ensues. Daniel has to find a way to be with his children so he...

Actor and lead singer with the Flying Pickets during the early 1980s, he went on to take roles in several popular TV series, including Coronation Street, EastEnders and Emmerdale
Brian Hibbard, who has died of prostate cancer aged 65, first found fame as a member of the Flying Pickets, a group of actors who left the socialist playwright John McGrath's 7:84 theatre group to woo audiences through their a cappella singing. They topped the pop charts in 1983 with a cover version of Only You, trumping Yazoo, the duo of Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke, who had reached No 2 with their original recording. This Christmas No 1 single and the group's flamboyant look – gaudy suits, large hats and Hibbard's massive sideburns – led to brief stardom for the Flying Pickets, a name coined because some of them had supported the miners during their strikes of 1972 and 1974. They hit the Top 10 again with another cover,...

Welsh actor known for playing Reg Harries in TV soap Pobol y Cwm
Twenty-nine years of playing the political activist turned pub landlord Reg Harries in the Welsh-language serial Pobol y Cwm made Huw Ceredig, who has died aged 69 after suffering from diabetes and pneumonia, one of Britain's longest-running soap actors and a familiar face to television viewers across Wales.
He joined the BBC Wales programme (whose title translates as People of the Valley) from its second episode in 1974. Set in the fictional village of Cwmderi, it began as a weekly programme, switched to the Welsh fourth channel, S4C, on the station's launch in 1982, and six years later went up to five episodes a week. Richard Ayoade is very much the It man of British comedy at the moment. Few truly fashionable parties are complete without an invitation having been nudged through his letter box by an increasingly busy agent. A naturally handsome man with aloof self-deprecation and a rigorously crafted “geek” persona he has, in addition to adulation for performances in cult TV show, “The It Crowd” found himself cast in the position of an unlikely sex symbol.
Now, having been so defiantly successful in all aspects of life thus far, Ayoade has now tried his hand at directing feature films and, quite typically, he appears to have taken to this discipline like a duck to water.
His source material of choice was Submarine, the debut novel from Welsh author, Joe Dunthorne, which depicts the war of a creative but nervous adolescent against a multitude of adolescent neuroses; along the way demonstrating an inventive...

To mark the UK release of The King's Speech - which features Colin Firth as King George VI overcoming his stammer in an explosive scene full of expletives - LOVEFiLM decided to find out which releases had the worst cases of cursing.
The TV and film subscription service asked a panel of cinema experts to compile the Top 10 foulest films based on frequency, strength of swear words used and the level of offence caused.
Among the releases that might come to mind, the 2010 comic book adaptation Kick-Ass caused a few shockwaves when its 11-year-old vigilante Hit Girl (played by Chloe Moretz) uttered the c-word before slashing her opponents with a sword.
Audiences laughed at the line when I saw the film, but some commentators and clean-up campaigners expressed indignation. The release was given a 15 certificate in the UK with the British Board of Film Classification advising that it "contains strong language,...

With the announcement of Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker in Sony’s reboot of Spider-Man we were left with the vacancies for female lead and the main villain of the piece.
Emma Stone was recently confirmed as Gwen Stacey and now we have news that Rhys Ifans will be playing the villain, though they are not saying which of the many bad guys he will be playing.
There were reports that Philip Seymour Hoffman was talking to Columbia about playing Venom but strong indications say that Marc Webb and co. are not looking to Venom or Hoffman for their Spidey-reboot, and now with Ifans in the frame the internet is sure to whizz into a frenzy as to the identity of the villain he will play.
Director Marc Webb is quoted as saying that Ifans is capable of displaying the ‘warmth and rage’ of the villain in question, and there...

Can you Adam and Eve it? Bonded By Blood a new British gangster flick has only gone and piled into the hallowed movie chart for most uses of the word ‘fuck’ in the history of cinema – compiled by Wikipedia… so may need triple-checking.
The film features a prodigious amount of swearing and the F word is used three hundred and twelve times. That’s even more than a Scorsese gangster film! Including other swear words, it takes it up to four hundred and thirty-three. It may prove that swearing is big or clever, but it can be record-breaking!
Along with the age-old F word the film also introduces a rather harsh new noun into the English language. Ever called anybody a ‘s***-c**t’ before? By Monday morning all the school kids will be using it!
Here’s the current all-time list below:

Kind-hearted Dougray Scott thrilled terminally ill youngsters at a hospice in his native Scotland this week (beg23Aug10) by dropping in for a surprise visit.
The actor was given a guided tour of Rachel House in Kinross, part of the Children's Hospice Association Scotland medical centres which provide respite care for dying kids.
He was shown around the unit's music room, accommodation block, and Jacuzzi before meeting patients - and one two-year-old girl was so pleased to see the Twin Town star, she gave him a cuddle and wouldn't let go, according to Scotland's Daily Record.

Mission: Impossible II star Dougray Scott has revealed how he won the part of bad guy Sean Ambrose in the blockbuster movie - he beat Tom Cruise at pool. The Scottish actor was plucked from obscurity to star opposite Cruise in the 2000 film after the Cruise saw Scott's performance in low budget British flick Twin Town. And Dougray says he still can't believe he got the part, especially after beating Cruise - who also produced the movie - at pool. Scott says, "It was bizarre. Tom saw Twin Town and loved it and thought that I was the guy to play his nemesis. They came to me, which is extraordinary. They flew me to Los Angeles. I met Tom in his house and we talked for a couple of hours. We played pool and I cleared the table. Not really a good move. But he won the next one and said 'This is great isn't it?' By the time I got back to the hotel they were doing the deal. I was the only actor they saw so it was flattering."...
