Sex & Nudity

  • The main couple kiss passionately several times
  • At one point, two people meet and talk in a tavern and it suddenly becomes apparent people are having sex loudly behind them. They're concealed by a curtain, but you can see part of a woman's upper bare thigh and hear the sounds of sex.

Violence & Gore

  • The first scene includes a very brief but violent childbirth. We can hear screaming from a downstairs room, then the camera takes us upstairs where a woman is shown clearly dead on a bed with blood on the sheets.
  • At one point, the character Morris visits Catherine's father in his doctor's office. It's clear from blood and anatomy posters that a surgery just took place.

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Men, including the father in the story smoke large cigars. Men also drink alcohol very casually.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The after-affects of the childbirth scene in the beginning are upsetting; the father's in shock at his wife's death and gets in bed next to her to grieve.
  • There's a frightening scene when a magician act depicts a woman appearing to be killed by a guillotine. Catherine nearly faints when she sees it, but it's immediately shown that the woman's ok and it was an act of illusion.
