Ryan Phillippe, the star of the new film Prey, reflected on his journey as an actor that started when he played the first gay teenager on TV in his exclusive uInterview.
Phillippe explained that his fascination with acting started when he skipped church one day as a teenager after he faked an illness. “Cool Hand Luke was playing and watching a guy who was the epitome of masculinity, and so good looking, so charismatic, and then watching the emotional beats he plays in that movie,” Phillippe told uInterview founder Erik Meers. “I just was fascinated by the emotion, and how he was able to make that so authentic. And that really started my exploration into what acting was.”
Phillippe continued that his path into the business was not easy, but his parents supported his interest and bought him books about the art. “I started reading about what acting actually was,...

When Heather Matarazzo’s indelible film debut “Welcome to the Dollhouse,” went to the Sundance Film Festival in 1996, the young star didn’t attend. “I didn’t go,” she told IndieWire during a recent interview. “Sony wouldn’t pay for me.” Now, it’s hard to imagine a breakout star of Matarazzo’s caliber, let alone the lead of a Grand Jury Prize winner, not being feted in the mountains of Park City.
At the time — and, as a tween herself — she wasn’t fazed by the decision on the part of distributor Sony Pictures Classics. “I didn’t know what a big deal it was,” she said.
Matarazzo’s performance as Dawn Wiener was a shock to the system. In Solondz’s pastel-colored New Jersey suburbia, Dawn is a gangly 11-year-old with glasses whose classmates call her “lesbo” and whose teachers chide her for being a “grade grubber.” Matarazzo,...

Bruce MacVittie, a prolific New York stage actor who made his Broadway debut opposite Al Pacino in a 1983 production of David Mamet’s American Buffalo and became familiar to television viewers through roles on The Sopranos, Law & Order and As The World Turns, died May 7 at a hospital in New York City. He was 65.
His death was announced by his wife, Carol Ochs, to The New York Times. A cause has not been determined.
MacVittie, a co-founder of the celebrated Off Broadway company Naked Angels, made his Broadway debut in 1983 under trying circumstances: He replaced actor James Hayden in the role of Bobby less than a month into the play’s run, when the up-and-coming Hayden died of a drug overdose. MacVittie would continue in the role on Broadway, in a touring production and on London’s West End.

(Some light spoilers ahead for the fourth episode of the Netflix series “Halston”)
The life of Roy Halston Frowick, better known simply as Halston, was not boring. That simply is not a word you could accurately throw around about anybody who was super rich and frequented Studio 54 during its brief reign of glory in New York in the late 1970s.
As we see in numerous scenes on “Halston” — as well, of course, from the many, many stories that folks have shared about it over the past four decades — that place was crazy. An absolute madhouse of debauchery. And certainly too chaotic to last.
Halston himself (Ewan McGregor) was a well known Studio 54 attendee in real life, partying there as often as he could, and the show reflects that — he, Victor Hugo (Gian Franco Rodriguez), Liza Minnelli (Krysta Rodriguez), Elsa Peretti (Rebecca Dayan) and Joe Eula (David Pittu) go there all the time,...

A script nearly seven years in the making about an enduring friendship steeped in multicultural Australia has taken the next steps toward production after receiving development support from Screen Australia’s Generate Fund.
Buddy comedy Carmen & Bolude follows the titular characters on a journey from Harlem, New York to Sydney, where they have ten days to collect 100 ‘welcomes’ so that Bolude’s traditional Nigerian father will agree to let her marry an Australian.
To be directed by Penelope Berkemeier (Game Night), the story is loosely based on the relationship between Nigerian-Australian Bolude Watson (Hearts and Bones) and Latin American-Australian Michela Carattini (Bite Club), co-writers of the script, who will also star in the film.
Watson was nominated for an Aacta Award in 2019 for her performance in Hearts and Bones, while also being named as a Casting Guild of Australia Rising Star in the same year.

The amoral legacy of closeted gay political operator Roy Cohn has come back to life in two films of the moment: Matt Tyrnauer’s “Where’s My Roy Cohn?” and now this more personal documentary directed by Ivy Meeropol, granddaughter of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were prosecuted by Cohn and executed for treason in 1953.
Meeropol previously covered the story of her grandparents in her 2004 documentary “Heir to an Execution,” and she sketches out the basics of the case against them at the beginning of her film on Cohn, starting off with footage of herself as a girl talking to her father about what happened to Julius and Ethel. She then cuts to footage of Cohn, who always signals, “I am evil” for the camera, as if he were very conscious of the part he was trying to play.

Hark, gays! The cult classic 54 starring Ryan Phillippe in a love triangle with Salma Hayek and Breckin Meyer is coming to VOD. Made in 1998, the original version by Mark Christopher bore little resemblance to the finished product, as Harvey Weinstein sanitized the film beyond recognition, namely excising the relationship between Phillippe and Meyer. (Read our history of the movie here.) What resulted was a slapdash, critically panned version — dubbed 55 by detractors — that no one saw. But after the original started circulating underground and made the rounds on the festival circuit, the director's cut will be available for the masses on June 2. It just took 17 years. For now, here's a look at the opening scene:...

After hotly anticipated and successful premieres in Berlin and San Francisco, "54: The Director's Cut" will hit Digital HD on June 2 from Miramax and Lionsgate. Dubbed the "ultimate party movie," this freewheeling dive into the debauchery days of New York's Studio 54 has been resurrected with 44 minutes of never-before-seen material. Sexy Ryan Phillippe stars as a Jersey boy who gets sucked into this world of sex and drugs alongside Salma Haye, Breckin Meyer, Sherry Stringfield, Neve Campbell and, of course, Mike Myers as the disco mecca's icky co-owner. (In the clip below, Phillippe gets his first taste of the sweet life.) Miramax and Harvey Weinstein demanded reshoots before slashing the film down to a lean, sanitized and altogether messy 100 minutes in 1998. But the new version, which includes a key bisexual subplot left on the cutting room floor, won heaps of praise on the festival circuit this year. (Vulture has a great...
