When you hear the name Seth MacFarlane, you’ll probably know that you’re in for some borderline humor that does hit the spot but not always in the way you’d expect. MacFarlane is funny, which cannot be denied, but his humor has been divisive from the very beginning. Whether it’s Ted, his Oscar hosting gig, or his most famous work, the adult animated series Family Guy, MacFarlane certainly knows how to draw attention to himself. The latter series has, despite all the praise directed at it, often been criticized for its humor and how it tends to take things too far, especially when sensitive social issues are concerned.
Now, this report isn’t about MacFarlane directly, but it is about another Family Guy character, the paraplegic macho police officer Joe Swanson, who is voiced by one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces and voices, Patrick Warburton. The...

"I let it roll, I let it ride, I let it go, I let it slide right by." Sony Pictures has debuted an amusing music video for The Garfield Movie, and since it kind of counts as another trailer (it's all footage from the movie) we're posting it below. The Garfield Movie is made by Sony Animation and Mark Dindal, the filmmaker who also directed The Emperor's New Groove and Chicken Little. The plot features Garfield reuniting with his long-lost father, a scruffy street cat, then ending up involved in a high-stakes heist with him (and Odie). Chris Pratt stars as the voice of the sarcastic, lasagna-loving tabby, alongside the voices of Samuel L. Jackson as his father Vic, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, Bowen Yang, and Ving Rhames. The cute teaser trailer debuted last year, and the official trailer arrived a month ago. This track features...

Nibbler the Nibblonian first appeared on "Futurama" in the episode "Love's Labours Lost in Space", wherein Leela (Katey Sagal) assumed he was a poor, lost animal that merely needed a home. She put an adorable red cape on him and outfitted him with a diaper. Nibbler had a voracious appetite and could consume many, many, many times his own body weight in pork products in a single day. Nibbler would then poop out perfectly round spheres of solidified dark matter that, quite conveniently, could serve as starship fuel.
It was later revealed that Nibbler was, in fact, Lord Nibbler, an impossibly ancient being -- born around 274 Bce -- who could speak in a clear, deep voice. He belonged to a species that possessed fleets of tiny, adorable warships and who were occasionally kidnapped and farmed for their fuel-pooping abilities. For years, whenever someone saw Nibbler speak, he could activate his...

The Garfield Movie is ringing in Monday — Garfield’s least favorite day — with a new action-packed trailer.
While the first trailer shared the wholesome story of how Garfield (voiced by Chris Pratt) entered Jon’s (voiced by Nicholas Hoult) life, the latest preview gets to Garfield’s unexpected reunion with his biological dad, Vic (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson).
Garfield’s life at home with Jon and Odie is “pretty near perfect” — that is, until he’s kidnapped by a massive pitbull and sent to Vic’s whereabouts. Vic enlists the help of Garfield and Odie, never mind that he hasn’t been there for his son since he was a kitten.
“I haven’t seen you for years and when I do, you’re on the run from a deranged cat,” Garfield points out. But he eventually agrees to help Vic out, with an adventure unlike anything the lasagna-loving cat has experienced.

Exclusive: Patrick Warburton will star in and produce The Unearthly, an indie blending elements of sci-fi, comedy and horror that will go into production in Connecticut early this year. Directing the pic for Centerboro Productions is Josh Sternfeld (Fortress: Sniper’s Eye).
In The Unearthly, a team of paranormal investigators live-stream a “Halloween Special” ghost hunt of a notorious haunted mansion, finding the source of the evil at hand to be far more deadly than they ever could have imagined. Warburton plays Tank McCrary, an old school paranormal investigator in the style of Ed Warren and Peter James, who hosted over 20 live television specials in the ’90s before an incident ruined his career. Stubborn and egotistical, he likes to do things his way. He doesn’t trust technology, relying on his analog tape recorder, archaic Emf meter, and his own smarts in his ghost hunting. His goal is to reclaim...

Benjamin Renner’s new comedy Migration offers a winning combination of a charming narrative and distinctive animation style. The film, which was written by White Lotus creator Mike White, is a tale of how a family of mallards embarks on an inspired journey from New England to Jamaica.
The Mallards, as they are aptly named, are a quartet of ducks living in a quiet pond somewhere in the Northeast. As in Renner’s striking 2012 animation Ernest & Celestine, Migration begins at bedtime. We meet Mack (Kumail Nanjiani) as he narrates a chilling story to his ducklings, Dax (Casper Jennings) and Gwen (Tresi Gazal), about the dangers of leaving their nest. He weaves an energetic tale about predatory herons and other monsters ready to devour adventure-seeking ducks. His stories have a fantastical edge to them — the preferred posture of overprotective parents. And they are brought to life by vivid 2D animations. There...

More than two decades ago, "Chicken Run" clucked its way onto the movie scene and became a runaway hit. The stop-motion animation movie was clever and strange, and unlike any of its contemporaries at the time (CGI-heavy flick "Dinosaur" and wacky Disney one-off "The Emperor's New Groove" bookended it at the year's box office). "Chicken Run" was also a surprisingly rich text, a movie that included plenty of moments of parody and humor meant to appeal to adults as well as kids.
The first movie functioned as a riff on "The Great Escape," the 1963 war film starring Steve McQueen, but the new sequel film, "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget," chose a different parody path. In an interview with /Film, director Sam Fell confirmed that "Dawn of the Nugget" was influenced by heist films, so much so that it earned a pointed nickname during production. As a prolific director and one of the co-founders of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki has become one of the biggest names in animation around the world, possibly the best-known name outside of Walt Disney himself. But it's easy to forget about the other names behind Studio Ghibli.
Studio Ghibli was founded by Miyazaki, fellow director Isao Takahata, and producer Toshio Suzuki in 1985. By that point, the two directors had already spent 20 years working together. First, they worked on the financially disappointing yet hugely influential "The Great Adventure of Horus, Prince of the Sun," as well as on Nippon Animation shows like "Heidi, Girl of the Alps," and "3000 Leagues in Search of Mother." It is a partnership that created a powerhouse in animation, and one that is at the heart of Miyazaki's latest (but no longer last) movie, "The Boy and the Heron.

With this year being the 100 year anniversary of The Walt Disney Company and the release of their latest animated title, Wish, we wanted to know what animated Disney film has been your favorite over the years? We stuck to films specifically released by Disney, so no Pixar titles are included. What struck me while compiling the list is the progression of their films. From the innocence of their early work to what many consider their heyday in the early 90’s to the emergence of the CGI era. For many of us, Disney films defined our youth, but which is the one that has remained with you all these years? As always, if you don’t see your favorite listed, please click “Other” and let us know what it is in the comments section as well as any fond memories you have of these timeless classics.

Ah, Mondays: the scourge of the workforce and of unemployed lasagna enthusiasts alike. Well, whichever category you fall into, this should help get your week off to a better start -- depending on your tolerance for Chris Pratt voicing animated roles that sound exactly like Chris Pratt, of course.
We can almost feel the marketing executives over at Sony rubbing their hands together at the irony of releasing the new trailer for "The Garfield Movie" on a Monday, by far the orange tabby cat's undisputed least favorite day of the week. The latest footage doesn't play up this Monday-hating aspect of his personality, however, as much as it does the origins of how he and Jon Arbuckle ended up crossing each other's paths (spoiler: it involves food), his love of lasagna, and, most surprisingly of all, the appearance of his long-lost father Vic ... voiced by Samuel L. Jackson, no less.

Sony Pictures Animation just dropped a trailer for their upcoming film, ‘The Garfield Movie,’ and it’s catching everyone’s attention. Chris Pratt, known for his role in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ brings life to the iconic, lasagna-loving cat. The trailer hints at a unique story, showing how Garfield and his owner Jon Arbuckle meet, wrapped in a theme reminiscent of ‘The Peanuts Movie.’
What’s really exciting is the twist in the story. The movie promises a high-stakes heist, which is a departure from the usual Garfield antics. According to the studio’s synopsis, Garfield, after reuniting with his long-lost father Vic (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson), gets dragged into a thrilling adventure. He’s not alone, though; his pal Odie joins in on the action too.

Randy Fullmer, an effects animator, visual effects supervisor, artistic coordinator and producer who worked at Disney for almost 20 years, has died after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 73.
Over his nearly two decades at Disney, he did everything from work on the Toon Town portion of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” (his first gig at the studio) to working as an artistic coordinator on “The Lion King” to producing full Disney features like “The Emperor’s New Groove” and “Chicken Little.” A key and unsung player in the Disney Renaissance of the ‘80s and ‘90s, Fullmer’s legacy will live on.

The Walt Disney Company has been synonymous with animation ever since Mickey Mouse's debut in 1928's "Steamboat Willie." Almost 100 years later and Disney is not so much a little mouse but an enormous whale lunging through the media landscape and devouring properties such as Marvel, Pixar, and 20th Century Studios.Disney's holdings are so vast that its catalog ranges from "Bambi" and "A Bug's Life" to "Predator," "Die Hard," "Family Guy," and "The Simpsons," but that doesn't mean the company hasn't tripped up. On the contrary -- many Disney films have been financial blunders, even beloved works such as "Pinocchio," the initial failure of which caused Walt Disney to be, according to his friend and colleague Joe Grant, "very, very depressed."
The fortunes of "Pinocchio" have changed since its release in 1940 -- numerous rereleases pulled its lifetime grosses to over $120 million -- but that can't be said of other Disney productions.

If you were around in the 1990s and of the age to watch comedy films, you've probably come across the films "Tommy Boy" and "Black Sheep" starring comedians David Space and the late Chris Farley. The two were a dynamic duo on "Saturday Night Live," with Spade often playing the straight man to Farley's wild and goofy antics. Farley died of a combination of a drug overdose and heart disease in December 1997, but while they were together, they were fabulously funny.
/Film's own Joe Garza did a list of Farley's top sketches from SNL, including Lunch Lady Land, the Chippendale's sketch with Patrick Swayze, and of course, Matt Foley, motivational speaker. That final one is one of the most ridiculously weird things I've seen on TV, and watching Spade try not to break as Farley's Foley talks about living in a van down by the river and throwing himself onto a table is pure joy.

Disney has a long and illustrious history, spanning 99 years and inspiring people all over the globe with its classic tales, innovative animation, and catchy tunes. Since Walt Disney, talented animators have been creating moving and thought-provoking stories for audiences of all ages, from the big screen to the living room TV.
Unfortunately, the studio abandoned some of these excellent concepts after they were just sketched. Fraidy Cat, a lost Disney Hitchcock-style mystery, was deemed too niche for kids.
What was the inspiration and the plot for ‘Fraidy Cat’?

At last count, Disney Animation Studios has canonized 61 of their features. The central "Disney Canon" refers to an ill-defined section of the studio's animated feature output that, as far as one might surmise, serves as examples of the studio's preferred "house style." The Disney Animated Canon includes several animation styles and media, of course, but the 61 films in question are considered to be "official." Canonized Disney films cannot be co-productions, they must be pointedly toyetic, and are typically not auteur-driven. One might not be able to, for instance, recall the directors of "Cinderella" (1950) off the top of their head. Their names, incidentally, are Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson, and Hamilton Luske. The trio also directed Disney's animated films "Lady and the Tramp," "Peter Pan," and "Alice in Wonderland."
For Disney, though, the company is the auteur, and weird, smaller projects tend to be excluded from the Disney Canon. "A Goofy Movie,...

Warning: this review contains spoilers for all three episodes of Stonehouse
At first glance, ITV drama Stonehouse has all the usual true crime trimmings: deceit, betrayal, untimely death, but it’s quickly apparent that this is not your average true crime drama.
The set and costume design gives a sizable early hint that this won’t be a particularly gritty story – instead of bleak and sinister it’s luxurious and rich with jewel tones – and rather than the usual ominous true crime soundtrack we get jaunty, spoofy spy music.
Indeed, you can imagine this music gleefully running through Labour MP Stonehouse’s head (a la Kronk from The Emperor’s New Groove) when he’s recruited as a Czech spy in the opening scenes after being all-too-easily caught in a honey trap.
But in Matthew Macfadyen’s portrayal of the disgraced politician, intelligence (the secret agent kind or otherwise) is as lacking as subtlety,...

Adam West Was Cast As A Conspiracy Theorist In Emperor's New Groove, But Was Cut From The Final Film
"The Emperor's New Groove" is a famously weird Disney movie that was almost even weirder. The delightfully offbeat David Spade comedy has endured several reassessments since its 2000 release, going from a notoriously troubled production (as documented by Vulture in that outlet's great oral history) to a middling box office performer to an enduring cult favorite.
In the years since the saga about an emperor-turned-llama on a quest to regain his human form hit theaters, a seemingly endless number of behind-the-scenes anecdotes have come to light about the movie that almost was. At one point, Vulture notes, the film was meant as a more straightforward adventure saga called "Empire of the Sun," which would've been led by Owen Wilson with a full soundtrack from Sting. That version of the flick never happened, and the movie continued to evolve drastically until it became the irreverent, kooky comedy audiences ended up with. One...

Disney's post-Renaissance era was marked by frustration and internal strife: The films were less financially successful, the studio was suffering a creative identity crisis, morale had hit a new low, and questionable management was a constant issue. While DreamWorks and Pixar were on the rise, Walt Disney Animation was floundering. But even as the slump persisted, optimism bubbled under the surface in the form of Stephen Anderson's "Meet The Robinsons."
At the heart of "Meet The Robinsons," there's a very delicate balance between the past and the future. It's a fitting tension for a film that arrived just after the studio's golden era, but before its grand revival. As though blithely self-aware of its positioning, the movie begins with a logo that calls back to Steamboat Willie and ends with a powerful mantra from the man who started it all, Walt Disney. Screenwriter Matthew Jacobs, who wrote Doctor Who: The Movie, plunges among fans of the sci-fi series to find out what makes Time Lord diehards tick
When Matthew Jacobs’s name is first displayed on screen in this likable documentary, he is identified as a “mid-level screenwriter”; it’s more of a self-deprecating description than a diss given that he is one of the film’s co-directors (along with Vanessa Yuille) as well as the feature’s star subject. But his filmography is a mixed bag, and includes several things you may never have heard of (Bar America and the cartoon Justin and the Knights of Valour), little remembered reworkings of established works, the original story for one of Disney’s least popular works (The Emperor’s New Groove), the film adaptation for one stone-cold British cult classic, and the script for 1996’s Doctor Who: The Movie.

Alright, high-five: Patrick Warburton made a surprise guest appearance on “The Bachelorette” as contestant Zach Shallcross’ real-life uncle.
The actor, known for portraying Elaine’s (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) quirky boyfriend Puddy on “Seinfeld,” was first seen in a promo for Monday night’s episode, which saw star Rachel Recchia join the final four (including Shallcross) for hometown dates. In the clip, Warburton says, “I just feel sorry for those other fellas” — in his signature deep drawl that he lent to Kronk in “The Emperor’s New Groove.”
As the video made the rounds on social media, Warburton cheekily tweeted, “I’m being asked ‘why are you on The Batchelorette ?’ [sic] It’s my favorite show? I’m addicted..? I have a crush on that Zach Shallcross fellow? Or…all of the above? Or…Zach is my nephew? Or…all of the above?”

This was because Zach’s uncle, Patrick Warburton, was not only on the show Seinfeld, but he also has been a voice actor on the famous Family Guy.
Patrick is the brother of Zach’s mom, Megan, and Zach felt like his uncle was a big enough part of his life to introduce him to his potential future wife.

After more than 15 years, America’s most iconic cat is finally returning to the big screen.
In 2024, we’re looking forward to the release of “Garfield,” the long-awaited film starring Jim Davis’ iconic comic strip character. The movie will, incredibly, be the first fully-animated theatrical project starring the lasagna-eating grouch, who first appeared in newspaper comic sections in 1978. Although the franchise has remained enormously popular in the decades since its launch, Garfield’s only theatrical films were two live action/CGI projects starring Bill Murray as the character. After the second film, “A Tale of Two Kitties,” bowed in 2006, the franchise remained off the bigscreen for years, in favor of direct-to-dvd films and television shows.
News of Garfield’s animated return first broke in 2016, when Alcon Entertainment secured the exclusive rights to developing animated features based on the character. Although the project remained dormant for several years, 2021 saw an uptick in news about the film,...

I'd be lying to you if I said that the 2000 animated Disney comedy "The Emperor's New Groove" is anything but a modern cartoon classic. The movie, which follows a hilarious Peruvian emperor who accidentally gets transformed into a llama by his former advisor and her himbo henchman, is a beloved addition to the Disney canon, and it was certainly one of the most unique stories put out by the studio around the time it was released. If you're a fan of the movie — and if you're not, we can't be friends, sorry — it will most likely delight you to know that Loungefly and Funko have some incredible D23 exclusive items coming out featuring the film's sweet and silly sidekick, Kronk! For the Disney+ program “Sketchbook,” Gabby Capili was told she could choose any Disney character she wanted to draw and for her, it was Kuzco from “The Emperor’s New Groove.” She recalls, “That’s my main guy. I say in the episode that it was the first Disney movie that I saw in theaters. I was pulled out of school and it was a very special memory for me.” The artist joins Gold Derby as part of our Meet the Experts: TV Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). In addition to the experience, she also loved the performances of the voice actors and how the characters would constantly break the fourth wall. “It’s just a very funny movie and I relate to the character a lot because he starts out very self-obsessed, but he learns throughout the course of the story that the power of friendship…makes you a better person.

“Sketchbook,” Disney’s six-part documentary series devoted to the art of hand-drawn animation (streaming April 27 on Disney+), arrives as the studio embarks on the welcome return of traditional 2D — just ahead of its 100th anniversary in 2023. Anyone who has ever been enchanted by a Disney animated film at a young age has also probably tried to draw their favorite character from that film, to admittedly mixed results. Disney+’s new documentary series “Sketchbook” aims to instruct viewers on how to draw those classic Disney characters, with the lesson being given by the animators themselves.
The new series, from “Chef’s Table” production company Supper Club and “Into the Unknown: The Making of Frozen 2” producer Amy Astley, in partnership with Walt Disney Animation Studios, centers on various characters from a range of periods in Disney history – newer characters like Mirabel from “Encanto” and Olaf from “Frozen” and more classic characters like the Genie from “Aladdin” and Captain Hook from “Aladdin.” Plus Kuzco from “The Emperor’s New Groove” (a deliciously out-of-left field choice).

Jen Shah may not be an evil sorceress, but she will clap back when necessary. The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star found herself doing exactly that when an Instagram meme compared her dress for the upcoming season two reunion to the signature look of Yzma, the sorceress villain in the animated film The Emperor's New Groove. It's a fair comparison as both gowns are purple and decked out in feathers, however, the Real Housewives fan account joked that Yzma was Jen's "fashion inspiration," which is what she seemed to take issue with. Two decades after the wonderfully zippy, goofy “Monsters, Inc.” was released in theaters, Pixar is bringing back Mike Wazowski and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan for another adventure. The upcoming television series “Monsters at Work,” which premieres July 7 on Disney Plus, picks up where “Monsters, Inc.” left off, with CEO Henry J. Waternoose headed for the slammer, children deemed non-toxic, and laugh energy replacing the suddenly outmoded scream energy.
In reviving the beloved characters, voiced by Billy Crystal and John Goodman, showrunner Bobs Gannaway looked to expand the existing world with a new set of characters, among them Tylor Tuskmon (Ben Feldman), Val Little (Mindy Kaling) and Fritz (Henry Winkler). Tylor joins the company right out of Monsters University expecting to start work as a scarer, only to find out that the legendary energy company is scrambling to re-strategize. He’s instead assigned to Mift, the Monsters Inc. Facilities Team, an...

One of our most-anticipated animations of the year comes from Mamoru Hosoda, the acclaimed auteur behind The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Wolf Children, The Boy and the Beast, and most recently, the Oscar-nominated Mirai. Belle follows Suzu, a 17-year-old high school student living in a rural village with her father. For years she has only been a shadow of herself. One day, she enters “U,” a virtual world of 5 billion members on the Internet. There, she is not Suzu anymore but Belle, a world-famous singer. She soon meets with a mysterious creature. Is it even worth arguing that The Emperor’s New Groove is the last great animated comedy Disney has made? They’ve certainly made funny movies since then, but have they done anything as purely interested in being funny, let alone made a film that finds so many different ways to be that? Especially given the hellish status of its production history and patently lower budget as a result of all that mess, the success of The Emperor's New Groove is legitimately miraculous. Yes, sometimes it can feel a bit cheap if you look too close or stare too long, but the buoyant colors and unabashedly cartoony style give its absurd silliness exactly the right spring in its step. It’s the film the comedic parts of Hercules wishes it could be, or if the Robin Williams...
