Burt Young, the gravely-voiced actor who played Sylvester Stallone‘s brother-in-law, Paulie Pennino, in Rocky, has died at 83. Young became beloved by moviegoers for his interpretation of the down-on-his-luck character who helped champion Rocky Balboa’s rise to boxing stardom. The film franchise would total nine installments over almost 50 years, but how many Rocky movies and sequels did Young appear in?
Burt Young played Paulie Pennino alongside Sylvester Stallone in ‘Rocky’ and its sequels
As Paulie Pennino, Burt Young played the devil character sitting atop one of Rocky Balboa‘s shoulders in the original Rocky film, written and starring Sylvester Stallone. His sister Adrian, played by Talia Shire, was the angel, and both pulled him in different directions emotionally.
Paulie had a temper, drank too much, complained often, and was a pain in the neck. However, he was beloved by Rocky, who could see beyond his tough exterior.

Burt Young, a former boxer who was in Sylvester Stallone’s corner as his brother-in-law Paulie in the six Rocky films and received a supporting actor Oscar nomination for his turn in the original, has died. He was 83.
He died on Oct. 8 in Los Angeles, his daughter, Anne Morea Steingieser, told The New York Times Wednesday.
A tough guy in real life who usually played tough guys onscreen, Young portrayed a rotten client of gumshoe Jack Nicholson’s in Chinatown (1974), was mobster “Bed Bug” Eddie in The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984) and played Rodney Dangerfield’s protector/chauffeur Lou in Back to School (1986).
Young also appeared in four movies in four straight years with fellow Queens guy James Caan — Cinderella Liberty (1973), The Gambler (1974), The Killer Elite (1975) and Harry and Walter Go to New York (1976) — before they worked together again in Mickey Blue Eyes (1999).

Burt Young, who played Paulie in six of the “Rocky” films starring Sylvester Stallone, drawing an Oscar nomination for supporting actor for his performance in the 1976 original, has died, his daughter Anne Morea Steingieser confirmed to the New York Times. He was 83.
Roger Ebert gave Young his props for his performance in the first “Rocky” film: “And Burt Young as (Adrian’s) brother — defeated and resentful, loyal and bitter, caring about people enough to hurt them just to draw attention to his grief.” The New York Times — in an absolutely scathing, completely dismissive review of the film — nevertheless said: “Burt Young is effective as Rocky’s best friend, a beer-guzzling mug.”

Oxford grad Hugh Grant has outgrown most of his romantic comedy ticks from his early years – flopsy-mopsy hair, fluttery eyelashes and charming stutter – and has matured into an exceptional and versatile actor. Not that he has lost his sense of humor. Anyone who chuckled over his villainous turn in this year’s “Paddington 2” as a pompous, cravat-wrapped actor who frames his cuddly ursine co-star for a crime he didn’t commit can testify to that Then there was his finely tuned scoundrel turn in the BBC miniseries, “A Very English Scandal,“ in which his Parliament member Jeremy Thorpe plots the botched murder of his male lover.
Grant began his acting career in the ‘80s as secondary player in both British period pieces — some good (“Maurice”) and others faintly ridiculous (“The Lair of the White Moon”) – and Hollywood comedies (the gangster farce “Mickey Blue Eyes”). But any hopes that he...

It was a magnificent movie weekend. Barbie, Oppenheimer, Sound of Freedom. All hits, a blowout!
So what else have you got?
The question sounds obnoxious, like its near-cousin, the always infuriating: “What have you done for me lately?”
But it’s an honest query, and an important one for a strike-bound, streaming-bent, pandemic-emergent industry that is still in need of revival.
The record-breaking weekend is a wonderful tonic, a welcome reminder that the audience, given half a chance, is still willing. But one weekend, even with the anticipated hold-over business from its hits, doesn’t mean a return to health.
That requires yet more watchable movies, lots of them, preferably offered in quick succession, while the viewers are showing an appetite. And those won’t be easy to come by in a Hollywood that has been shut down by dual strikes — raising the prospect of potential scheduling delays — and is...

A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

1999 was an interesting year for onscreen gangsters. You had Hugh Grant learning the lingo ("Fuhgeddaboudit") from James Caan in "Mickey Blue Eyes," Terence Stamp's Cockney villain seeking revenge in L.A. in "The Limey," and Robert De Niro's stressed-out mobster visiting a terrified psychiatrist in "Analyze This." They all had their moments, but nothing compared to the huge cultural impact of "The Sopranos," which jumped off from a very similar scenario to the latter and went on to become one of the greatest TV shows of all time.

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!
HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.
If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.

Don’t expect to see Hugh Grant in an upcoming rom-com.
During the The Hollywood Reporter’s drama actor roundtable — which also featured actors Richard Madden, Billy Porter, Diego Luna, Sam Rockwell and Stephan James — Grant, 58, was asked if he had an “inferiority complex” from always starring in romantic comedies, and he confessed that he felt he was no longer cut out for those roles.
“Well, yes, but less now because I’ve gotten too old and ugly and fat to do them anymore, so now I’ve done other things, and I’ve got marginally less self-hatred,” he answered with a laugh.

In the past two years he has produced the best work of his life, including his latest turn in A Very English Scandal
Back in the mid-90s, shortly after I saw Four Weddings And A Funeral – when I, along with half the females in this country, developed a profound soft spot for Hugh Grant – I went to see the adaption of Beryl Bainbridge’s novel An Awfully Big Adventure, purely because he starred in it. The rest of the cinema audience had clearly come for the same reason, and we all made a collective excitable giggle when he appeared on screen. But those giggles died down pretty fast, because this was no Four Weddings. Grant plays a predatory, charismatic gay theatre director named Meredith who callously toys with the minds of women and the bodies of men. “What he wants is hearts,” someone explains to one of Meredith’s devastated victims.

There will be one each month, diving into the marquee events of the era, their impact on the writer and their implications on today's multiplex culture. We continue today with a look back at the summer of 1999. It was the summer I became Moriarty. To be fair, I had been contributing to Ain't It Cool for a little while already by that point, and I had been slowly but surely embracing the potential of the website and the audience that I was reaching. Netflix is getting creative with its advertising for the galactically-anticipated re-debut of Arrested Development. Right now, if you search for something “blue” on the Netflix website — either just typing “blue,” or perhaps specifically looking for something with the word in the title, like Blue Velvet or Return to the Blue Lagoon or Mickey Blue Eyes — you’ll note errant bits of blue paint along the side, along with a telltale blue handprint. Clip on the image below for a look:
If you click on the handprint, the infamous “I just blue myself” scene from Arrested Development will play. No word...

In the books, he attempts to...

Recently, I have self-diagnosed myself with vocal polyps following a few singing related incidents. It all started about 2 weeks ago, while on vacation in my hometown of Miami, when me and a few friends found ourselves stuck in standstill traffic with nothing more than a live Elton John concert on 101.5 Lite FM. Down the windows of my father’s sensible sedan went, as we serenaded passerby from a nearby Heat game to a whiff of our “Philadelphia Freedom.” That night was vocal mistake #1. Mistake #2 came a few days later when I sang Billy Joel’s “Honesty” alone to myself in my car, and I swear to God, nailed it. Sorry American Idol‘s Hollie Cavanagh, but you have nothing on the brilliance that sailed out of my mouth in my Mercury Milan. In short: I am now like a much less famous Adele when it comes to polyps and polyps...

I’ve often struggled with the question of how to find meaning in my Flickchart rankings. I obsessively compile them and look over them repeatedly, but I also want to know how to use them to learn more about my own movie-watching tendencies.
Toward that end, on my own blog, I’ve begun a project to examine my top ten films using certain filters. Not necessarily the filters Flickchart makes available, such as my favorite comedies of all time or my favorite horror films of all time, though I will probably do those eventually as well. What I really want to do is choose a category that interests me, then drill on down through my rankings to see the first ten that satisfy the criteria of that category. Some of these may be excessively quirky categories — I won’t give any examples here, in order to keep the element of...

An Aardman Production For Sony Pictures Animation Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Brian Blessed, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen Also On Board
Culver City, Calif. – Hugh Grant will voice the lead role alongside an all-star cast in The Pirates! The film, which will be distributed by Columbia Pictures, will be released March 30, 2012 in North America.
Hugh Grant, starring in his first animated role, is the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain – a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to...

For whatever reason, these "actors who turned down roles" lists are notoriously popular. Unfortunately, that list has been done to death. By now, everyone knows that Will Smith turned down Neo, that Johnny Depp turned down Ferris Bueller, that Molly Ringwald turned down Pretty Woman, Sean Connery turned down Gandalf, and Christopher Walken (and Burt Reynolds) allegedly even turned down Hans Solo.
So I thought, if it's already been done to death: Fuck it. I'll make one up.

Chainsawing through a parade of zombies is always going to be fun, but Dead Rising 2 is far more interested in fashion than gore. You can dress your man in almost anything: a tuxedo, a football uniform, a mini-skirt. There are dozens of weapons, but since killing zombies is easy, even the most brutal killing machine feels more like a fashion accessory. (What will go best with your tuxedo: a battle-axe, a shotgun, or a wooden baseball bat with nails poking out of one end?) Dead Rising 2 is probably the least scary zombie videogame ever made, but if you squint a little bit,...

Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley's movie company is rumored to be closing down - because it hasn't made a film in five years. The former lovers set up Simian Films in 1994 and went on to make Extreme Measures and Mickey Blue Eyes - both starring Grant and produced by Hurley - in 1996 and 1999 respectively. A number of films were in the pipeline when the couple split in 2000, but none of the projects materialized. The pair have kept the company running, but its turnover halved between 2002 and 2003, falling from $867,255 to $479,263 - prompting speculation Grant and Hurley may wind up the firm. A spokesperson for Simian, however, insists, "Hugh and Elizabeth closed down the company's US office in 2002, but the office in London remains unchanged. We haven't got any projects in the pipeline, but we continue to employ four staff."...

The infamous Versace dress Elizabeth Hurley wore to the premiere of the Hugh Grant film Mickey Blue Eyes (1999) has inspired the design for a new fleet of Scottish buses. Lothian Regional Transport hopes that the pink and gold diamonds that now cover its double deckers will give public transport a more glamorous image. The company's chief executive Neil Renilson was so struck by Elizabeth's figure-hugging, full length gold and mesh gown he had a picture of her wearing it framed. He says, "I admit to being a big fan of hers. It's not often buses are associated with style and glamour, and that is what we are striving for." A spokesman for Versace, which holds the copyright for the design, told The Independent newspaper, "We will be looking into this."...
