Threequels can often be a daunting undertaking for even the most accomplished of directors, and even for franchises with decent first two installments. Candyman 3: Day of the Dead takes a fairly offensive stab at the Mexican holiday, while Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III doesn’t live up to the pre-release marketing hype about it being ‘banned’ and ‘the most controversial movie ever made’. It was neither. Even Scream 3, despite not necessarily being bad per se, is a low point considering how strong the first two movies are. On the flip side though, George Romero’s Day of the Dead is a solid follow-up to both Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, while Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead threequel Army of Darkness is a total blast. So, after Hostel: Part II grossed significantly less than the hit opening chapter, did that put any notions...

In 2022, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media revived the Scream franchise with a new entry (the fifth) that was a box office hit, earning almost $139 million at the global box office. Fourteen months later, Scream VI came along – and became an even bigger hit, pulling in almost $169 million at the global box office, a number that was up there with the series’ heyday, when the first Scream and Scream 2 made just over $170 million. (Scream 3 also made over $160 million – only Scream 4 failed to crack $100 million.) So, of course, the companies are moving full steam ahead with Scream 7. While the movie seemed, initially, to be on the fast-track to success, the track it’s on has turned out to be a shockingly bumpy ride.

A lot of Scream franchise fans were hoping Melissa Barrera would reprise the role of Samantha Carpenter from Scream (2022) and Scream VI in a third Scream movie, and it has been said that the directors of those films, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, wanted to return for a Scream 7 that would wrap up the Sam Carpenter story as a trilogy. But that’s not how it worked out. The directors went off to make Abigail, and Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media weren’t willing to wait for them to circle back to Scream 7. So Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett were, as they put it, “exited” from the project and it started moving forward without them… only to hit a series of speed bumps. Including the day when Barrera was fired after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. So there...

Update: Variety has confirmed that Courteney Cox is in talks to join Neve Campbell in Scream 7. They didn’t mention Patrick Dempsey in their report.
The original article (published March 25th) follows:
Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures once intended to make a Scream 7 that would have starred Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, with Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon at the helm. But then Ortega allegedly asked for a substantial pay raise – and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. Then Barrera was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. Landon dropped out the of the project soon after. Wes Craven, director of the first four films in the Scream franchise, passed away in 2015. So when Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media teamed up to revive the franchise with the new sequel that was released in 2022, the directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett took the helm. They then returned to direct Scream VI the following year, with both of their contributions to the franchise centering on sisters Samantha and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. During a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett confirmed that they had been planning to return to direct Scream 7 and complete a Carpenter sisters trilogy… but they mistakenly thought they could fit the production of their Universal Monsters movie Abigail (formerly known as Dracula’s Daughter) in between the making of Scream VI and Scream 7. Turns out, Spyglass wanted to get moving on Scream 7 sooner than their schedules allowed,...

Not long ago, we reported that the future is looking a lot brighter for the upcoming Scream 7 movie, with Neve Campbell confirming her return as Sydney Prescott despite pay-related issues with the production, as well as Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original movies, coming to direct the movie. Sure, the previous movie’s stars, including Jenna Ortega, left the project, but it seems that the production is heating up for a bombastic, nostalgia-filled sequel based on the rumors we have.
Namely, industry insider Daniel Richtman (@DanielRPK) recently reported rumors that two major stars might be returning for the upcoming sequel, which is more than great if you ask us. The first name is that of Courtney Cox, who is supposedly returning as Gale Weathers for Scream 7. And while this is certainly great news, the return of Cox’s character was more or less expected, so this doesn’t...

The "Scream" franchise is still alive and stabbing. The horror series began back in 1996 with Wes Craven's surprise hit, and it's continued on over the decades. Recently, "Scream 7" fell apart after star Melissa Barrera was fired from the franchise, and the film's director, Christopher Landon, subsequently walked away from the project. Now, however, it looks like the seventh film in the series is back on track, with franchise creator Kevin Williamson on board to direct and original star Neve Campbell returning.
With "Scream" back in the news, you might be suddenly inspired to revisit the franchise from the beginning. However, you might also be wondering where to start, since the numbering system of the series is a little out of whack.
Don't worry, we're here to help.

In the “still relevant” show, she played the impossibly glamorous mother of Blake Lively’s Serena.
“It was before this whole super politically correct time. We were on the verge of it and there is just a different energy about it. After the first season, we knew [it was huge].”
“Gossip Girl” ended in 2012.
“The women I grew up with were very chic, but I hadn’t really seen a mother like that on TV. I didn’t realize how much people loved Lily – until now. At first, it was all about these kids. We were just parents.

The Core Four is no more. Although Scream (2022) and Scream VI set up the characters of Samantha Carpenter, Tara Carpenter, Mindy Meeks-Martin, and Chad Meeks-Martin as the new leads of the Scream franchise, that group is not going to end up being in Scream 7, whenever that film goes into production. It’s an interesting month on HBO and Max this March, as two acclaimed films hit the streamer along with some intriguing original programming.
First up in the movies arena is the streaming debut of Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet. From beloved Paddington director Paul King, the film follows the adventures of a young Willy Wonka as he looks to become the world’s best (and weirdest) chocolatier. Later in March on Max, there’s also Dream Scenario, a highly-regarded comedy boasting Nicolas Cage as Paul Matthews, who suddenly starts appearing in people’s dreams for unknown reasons, and who naturally becomes very famous as a result of this strange phenomena.
Series-wise, the biggest show on Max this month is The Regime. It packs a solid cast, including Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant, and tells the story of “life within the walls of a modern...

6. Scream 3 (2000) Starting off our slumber party with a snooze-fest, we have Scream 3. Skeet Ulrich played one of the killers, Billy Loomis, in the 1996 classic Scream – and things didn’t go well for Billy at the end of that film. When the fifth film in the franchise, which was also simply titled Scream, came around in 2022, fans were surprised to learn that not only would one of the lead characters (Melissa Barrera as Samantha Carpenter) be the never-before-mentioned daughter of Billy Loomis, but she would also be seeing visions of her father throughout, allowing Ulrich, with the help of some digital de-aging, to reprise his role twenty-six years later. Samantha was again a major character in Scream VI, and Ulrich again got to make appearances as Billy. Melissa Barrera was on board to come back for Scream 7… until she was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass Media.

Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle seems to have spilt audiences and critics all over the world. From being branded as over-the-top fun, to the worst film of the year. While it’s neither of them, at times it can be argued that it’s fallen into each argument.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith definitely didn’t surpass expectations, it mostly left us with question marks for expressions because of how lackluster the show really was. I suppose you could say there are some good parts; you’ve got beautiful sets and some fun fashion choices, but most importantly, a bunch of cameos that are meant to enhance the show considering how dull it is otherwise. Not to say that Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are incapable of holding our attention, but it’s probably a mix of the writing and the pacing of this show that had me completely bored by the end of it. And, no, even these incredible special appearances did not pique my interest in any way. However, they do add a little bit of fun, even if briefly, to the mostly tedious show. Fun trivia: one of the working titles for Wes Craven's 1996 slasher satire "Scream" was "Scary Movie." Filmmaker Keenan Ivory Wayans got wind of this trivia, and decided in 2000 to make a film called "Scary Movie" intended to satirize the popularity of "Scream." The late 1990s were a curious time in popular culture, as there weren't too many dominant horror trends. Popular music was beginning to comment on its own self-awareness (see: "Flagpole Sitta") and irony became ironic. Self-reflection went from a healthy Socratic exercise into a loop of eternal recurrence. By 2000, we became so busy commenting on our own commentaries, that it was hard to see where we started. This is where "Scary Movie" dropped in.
Make no mistake, "Scary Movie" is unfunny, as are its many sequels. They're cheap, homophobic, and vulgar. Wayans took his model from spoof filmmakers like Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker, but aimed to make something...

Landing your dream job doesn’t always turn out to be good, as director Christopher Landon suggested on X today, announcing that he’s quit Scream 7. Indeed, the director didn’t mince words, writing that “it was a dream job that turned into a nightmare.” The director is likely referring to the myriad behind-the-scenes issues that seem to be prematurely killing what initially came off as a promising relaunch for the venerable franchise. Back in November, it was announced that breakout star Melissa Barrera, who was leading the franchise, had been fired due to social media posts in the wake of the Israeli-Hamas war that were deemed anti-semitic by some.
Landon, in a staggering honest post to X, initially made his displeasure known right then and there, writing, “This is my statement: Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.“ Only days later, it was announced...

As we prepare to tiptoe through the dark corridors of this iconic series, let’s rank each installment from least to most scary, based on their ability to send shivers down our spines and make us peer over our shoulders long after the credits roll. 1. Scream 3 (2000) Scream 3 marks the point where the series veered into a different lane, one less traveled by terror and more by satire. The result was a mandate that Scream 3...

Last week, we heard the shocking news that Scream (2022) and Scream VI star Melissa Barrera won’t be reprising the role of troubled heroine Samantha Carpenter in the upcoming Scream 7, as she had been fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass Media. The next day, it was revealed that Barrera’s co-star Jenna Ortega, who played Samantha’s sister Tara, will also be absent from Scream 7. Scheduling issues were blamed for Ortega’s exit, as she’ll be spending several months filming Wednesday season 2 in Ireland next year. Many fans rejected that explanation, assuming Ortega had dropped out in solidarity with Barrera. But a new The Hollywood Reporter article claims that Ortega’s Scream 7 absence is actually due to a pay dispute – you know, the same issue that caused Neve Campbell to...

Jenna Ortega will not be returning for 'Scream VII'.The 21-year-old actress has starred as Tara Carpenter in the previous two installments of the slasher franchise but will not feature in the next flick due to a scheduling conflict with the second season of the Netflix series 'Wednesday' – in which she plays the title role of Wednesday Addams.Jenna's exit is unrelated to the firing of Melissa Barrera, who plays Tara's half-sister Sam Carpenter, from the film over comments she made regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict. It is understood that Ortega's departure from 'Scream' was discussed prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike as she needs to go to Ireland to film 'Wednesday' in April, which will continue into the summer of next year. The 'Yes Day' actress also has to complete filming for 'Beetlejuice 2' as she portrays Lydia Deetz's daughter...

It’s been a tumultuous week for the Scream franchise, to say the very least, with franchise co-stars Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega no longer involved in the upcoming Scream 7.
Barrera was fired from the production by Spyglass while it was announced earlier today that Ortega is no longer attached to reprise her own role from the previous two movies, and Variety brings a bit more clarity to the behind the scenes chaos in a brand new report this evening.
Variety details, “It seemed to some fans like the planned sequel was collapsing in real time. However, even before Barrera was fired, plans for the next Scream were being retooled. Ortega’s exit had required the creative team to make some alterations, according to individuals with knowledge, but there were still hopes that the actress might be convinced to come back for some sort of cameo. Melissa Barrera has broken her silence after being fired from the “Scream” franchise. The actress is condemning antisemitism and Islamaphobia after the film’s studio Spyglass said her recent social media posts prompted them to drop her from “Scream 7.”
“First and foremost I condemn antisemitism and Islamophobia. I condemn hate and prejudice of
any kind against any group of people,” Barrera wrote in a statement shared via her Instagram story. “As a Latina, a proud Mexicana, I feel the responsibility of having a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard, and therefore I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and to lend my voice to those in need. Every person on this earth — regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or socio-economic status — deserves equal human rights, dignity and, of course, freedom. Not even Ghostface could see this twist coming.
The “Scream” franchise lost two stars this week, putting the seventh film in the series in a creative conundrum, according to sources familiar with the project.
Variety broke the news that Melissa Barrera was fired by Spyglass, the film’s producer, in recent days over social media messages that it deemed to be antisemitic. That decision was made after the company was notified that Jenna Ortega, whose star has risen considerably since she joined the beloved Wes Craven horror series, would not return due to a scheduling conflict with the second season of her smash Netflix hit “Wednesday.” Barrera and Ortega play sisters in the films.
Backlash to Barrera’s ouster has been intense, with the film’s director Christopher Landon reacting to the events surrounding her exit. He posted and deleted a statement on X on Tuesday that read, “Everything sucks.

Horror maestro Eli Roth returns with the long-awaited Thanksgiving, ushering in a new holiday-themed slasher villain with a one hell of an appetite for body destruction. After an ill-advised early Black Friday sale results in several grizzly deaths, a masked madman known as The Carver turns a small town into his hunting ground as he seeks revenge on the people responsible. It’s dyed-in-the-wool Slasher with some best-of-the-year kill sequences and made with lifelong horror fans in mind.
Adapted from a fake movie trailer included in Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse (2007), Roth’s Thanksgiving is the throwback the Slasher crowd has been dying to see for over a decade now. Expanding on the camp and craze of that previous short, Thanksgiving (2023) reunites Roth and previous Thanksgiving (2007) screenwriter Jeff Rendel with an expanded cast including Patrick Dempsey (Scream 3), Gina Gershon (Bound), Rick Hoffman (Hostel), and Nell Verlaque (Big Shot...

In honor of Thanksgiving now playing in theaters, I decided to take a look at the filmography of Eli Roth. After spending a few days watching films like Cabin Fever, Hostel and The Green Inferno, I cried in the shower for about twenty minutes and am vegan now!
In no particular order, here are the most gnarly moments of Roth’s fun career in horror…
“I’m Never Gonna Shave Again” – Cabin Fever (2002)
Without a doubt my favorite Eli Roth film and in my opinion one of the most underrated horror comedies of all time, Cabin Fever features tons of laughs and gross-out scares. One in particular that is hard to forget. Specifically, for those who shave their legs.
After Sweet Lou (the always memorable Joey Kern) decides to reasonably say “To hell with all of you since you Won’T Stop Touching The Bleeding And Infected People” and storm...

The more we head into this new generation of "Scream" films, the more we see the parallels to the original trilogy. Like "Scream 2," "Scream 6" was rushed into production immediately after the success of its predecessor, with mixed results. Both Screams 2 and 6 gave us some of the most exciting and suspenseful chase sequences of the whole series, but they also gave us two messy final acts, both of which probably could've been polished over script-wise if the production had been given a little more time.
The parallels don't stop there: Just like the longer gap between Screams 2 and 3, "Scream 7" is also set to take much longer to release in theaters than its predecessor. It'll also experience a few creative changes behind the scenes, as well as some uncertainty over which major cast members are coming back. In the third movie's case, this ended up in one of...

The best thing about the "Scream" franchise is that, as far as most fans are concerned, there are no downright awful entries. Some movies are weaker than others, sure, but no movie was so bad that the series' creators had no choice but to reboot the entire thing. This is a series that builds on itself, embracing continuity and refusing to allow viewers to discard any of its entries. The "Star Wars" sequels pleased nobody when they tried to make "Rise of Skywalker" serve as a reversal of every controversial decision made in the previous film, but the "Scream" series has never made any such cowardly mistake. Every sequel matters in this franchise, no matter what. No movie is going to apologize for anything the last movie did.
Still, not all "Scream" movies are created equal. Some of them have tone problems, or lackluster killer reveals. Some of them are...

When the rom-com Prom Pact arrived on Disney platforms in late March, it debuted to positive reviews and the modest level of fanfare one would expect for a TV film aimed at teenagers. But seven months later, it has gone viral for all the wrong reasons.
On Thursday, a clip from the film’s opening pep rally scene circulated on X, formerly known as Twitter. In a blink and you’ll miss it moment, unrealistic looking digital humans cheer in the bleachers alongside real background actors. The clip has been widely shared (and widely mocked).
It has also struck a chord amid the SAG-AFTRA strike that has shut down Hollywood and in which one of the key issues is the worry that an actor’s likeness could be re-created digitally without adequate procurement of consent and compensation. Every major holiday could stand to have a slasher movie themed around it, especially one with a sunny disposition masquerading the grim truth behind it like Thanksgiving. Such was Eli Roth's thinking when he made his fake "Thanksgiving" movie trailer for Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's "Grindhouse" experiment back in 2007. Roth's original short is a collection of scenes of people getting brutally decapitated over the Thanksgiving holiday frame by a serial killer dressed as a Pilgrim. It's grotesque, juvenile, and tasteless. In other words, it's everything you either love or hate about Eli Roth's horror work in general.
16 years later, Roth has finally gone and turned "Thanksgiving" into a full-fledged film, just like the fake "Grindhouse" trailers turned actual films "Machete" and "Hobo with a Shotgun" before it. Roth's slasher also marks his return to the realm of hard R-rated genre fare after his brief detour into...

Horror movies have a knack for making us jump out of our seats, but what happens when they become self-aware? Enter the world of meta-horror, where the lines between fiction and reality blur, and the characters might just be more in the know than you are. These films don’t just break the fourth wall; they smash it with an axe. Here’s a list of ten meta-horrors that will have you questioning every horror trope you thought you knew.
Magnolia Pictures 10. Rubber (2010)
Ever wondered if a tire could be the central character of a horror film? Look no further than Rubber. This film follows Robert, a sentient tire with telepathic abilities, as he goes on a murderous rampage. But here’s the twist: there’s an audience within the movie watching Robert’s antics through binoculars. It’s a bizarre, hilarious take on the genre that pokes fun at horror clichés.
