I find it ironic how despite existing on a planet where pretty much every living thing originated in the ocean, one of humanity’s most widespread fears is thalassophobia – the fear of the deep ocean. Whether it’s some form of genetic memory that continues to haunt our species or a natural reaction to witnessing one of the deadliest ecosystems in the world, it’s no surprise storytellers have been taking advantage of this fear for millennia.
And while Jaws obviously dominates the conversation when it comes to underwater horror in film, there are still some intrepid filmmakers that dare to explore other kinds of sea-borne thrills. For example, Deep Blue Sea director Renny Harlin’s upcoming Deep Water looks like it’s going to take us on another roller-coaster ride directly into shark-infested waters. However, since there’s still no official release date, we’ve decided to come up...

Denis Villeneuve's Dune has enthralled audiences around the world, thanks to the filmmaker's dedication to detail, world-building, and visually stunning visuals. Based on Frank Herbert's novel of the same name, the two-part movie takes place in a future where humanity has colonized space and exists within a grand empire. To allow for space travel, a rare spice found only on the planet Arrakis must be harvested, with those who control the planet gaining extreme wealth. When House Atreides are given dominion over the world, they are betrayed, setting up an epic battle for freedom.
Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of the story has shown the peak of what sci-fi fantasy can be on the big screen, as the heroes rebel against the vile Harkonnens. The sci-fi fantasy sub-genre isn't as well explored as it should be, but there are plenty of memorable entries that are worth a look. For people...

Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo talks to us about his latest film, Damsel, designing an intimidating dragon, and Millie Bobby Brown facing her fears…
The subject of fear comes up in varying forms during our lively chat with Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. There’s the fear induced by the glowering dragon that lies at the heart of his latest film, Damsel, which will stream on Netflix from the 8th March.
There’s the fear experienced by rising star Millie Bobby Brown, who was forced to confront her own claustrophobia when making Damsel; the film’s centre-piece is a lengthy fight for survival in a network of caves inhabited by that fearsome dragon, designed by the legendary Patrick Tatopoulos (those cool bat-type aliens in Pitch Black? Those were his).
Then there’s the fear Fresnadillo felt while making horror sequel 28 Weeks Later in 2007 – the process of editing it, he tells us,...

If there’s one positive thing even the many people he’s had feuds with might say about Vin Diesel, it’s that when he latches onto a character or concept, he doesn’t let them go. He may have skipped the first sequel to The Fast and the Furious, but once he did return to the role of Dominic Toretto, he made sure the sequels kept reaching theatres at a fast and furious pace. Few movie-goers seem to care about the Richard B. Riddick character beyond Pitch Black, but that hasn’t stopped Diesel from continuing to push sequels forward – and apparently Riddick 4 isn’t far off from production. Then there’s his 2015 fantasy/action film The Last Witch Hunter, which didn’t gain a lot of fans (although JoBlo’s own Alex Maidy dug it). Diesel liked it, so we might just get a The Last Witch Hunter...

The Fast and Furious franchise has featured some pretty big stars since the early days of the street racing crew stealing TV/Vcr combos. Check out the later entries and you’ll see Kurt Russell, Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren, and plenty of others. But one action favorite who won’t be getting behind the wheel is Jean-Claude Van Damme, who claims that he hit a big, bad, bald roadblock when approached about joining the Fast and Furious franchise.
In a profile by The Telegraph, Jean-Claude Van Damme claimed that he could have once been a part of the insanity of this series if for Vin Diesel, who plays Dominic Toretto in the Fast and Furious franchise. “They want me in Fast and Furious… But Vin Diesel said, ‘No, I don’t want him.’” Shot down by the dude from Pitch Black and The Pacifier! After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, three separate moments from John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, the “Jason vs. Tina” battle in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, and the “all hell breaks loose” sequence from the start of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake,

Lana Parrilla and Branko Tomovic have joined the cast of Action Xtreme’s Pov action thriller “Bad Day at the Office” from writer-director Chee Keong Cheung.
The two join the previously announced cast of John Hannah, Radha Mitchell, Tamer Hassan, Roxanne Mckee (“Game of Thrones”) and Tim Fellingham (“Final Destination 5”).
Filmed entirely in the first-person perspective using GoPros, “Bad Day at the Office” follows Karl (Hannah) after he wakes up in a wrecked hotel room with no memory of what’s happened, where he is, or even who he is. When he discovers a dead body in the bathtub, it sets into motion a terrifying and explosive series of events that force Karl and hotel maid Molly (Mitchell) on a blind descent into a deceptive world of confusion and conspiracy.

The Riddick movies may not have been critically acclaimed, but they gained a loyal fanbase and became cult classics in their own right. Each Riddick movie has its own strengths and builds a compelling world within the story's universe. While the Riddick movies can be enjoyed as standalone adventures, they are best experienced in the order in which they were released.
The Riddick movie franchise was a major stepping stone in Vin Diesel's career, but without consistency in the titling of the three installments, their viewing order is not immediately clear. Starting in the year 2000 with the sci-fi/horror film Pitch Black, the series quickly found its star in the form of its antihero, Richard Riddick (Diesel), and the franchise continued with additional movies. Though the Riddick movies have received mixed critical reactions, the series gained a loyal fanbase and its films became cult classics in their own right.

Vin Diesel's Riddick movies are an unusual franchise, driven by Diesel's love for the character and a desire to explore his world with series director David Twohy. Each entry is wildly different from the others, spanning different genres and even mediums, with a short detour into animation for "Riddick: Dark Fury." Riddick himself is a fun sci-fi creation, the last surviving member of an alien warrior race called Furyans, with reflective eyes that see in the dark. But where should newcomers to the franchise start, and what order should they watch the "Riddick" flicks in?
Thankfully the answer is fairly simple, dear reader, though which entries work best might vary from viewer to viewer. "Pitch Black" seems to be fairly universally beloved, but the other "Riddick" entries received more mixed receptions yet have their own cult followings. The movies are possible to enjoy on their own but might be a little confusing,...

The shift to blockbuster filmmaking in the 2000s paved the way for a multitude of big-budget films, especially in the science-fiction genre. Between 2000 and 2009, studios were still figuring out exactly what audiences wanted from sci-fi movies. Disaster stories, dystopian futures, aliens, time travel and alternate dimensions exploded onto the big screen, with the expansion resulting in a number of projects that never quite got their due.

Vin Diesel was not the first choice for the role of Dominic Toretto in The Fast and the Furious. The studio initially wanted Timothy Olyphant, and there are significant differences between the original project and the final result. Vin Diesel did not return for 2 Fast 2 Furious, the only movie in the main saga without him or Paul Walker. However, a The Fast and the Furious sequel with Diesel could have happened. Vin Diesel was originally supposed to star in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, but the studio wanted a high school setting instead. He made a cameo at the end of the film.

Despite the success of science-fiction franchises' first movies, many sequels fail to make the same impact, losing focus and originality. The sequels of The Matrix, Back To The Future, and Jurassic Park struggled to replicate the magic of their predecessors, lacking the iconic elements and cohesive narratives. Men in Black, Planet of the Apes, and Pitch Black all had sequels that couldn't capture the brilliance and depth of the original films.
Despite producing incredible first movies, several science-fiction franchises never manage to replicate their original success. Science-fiction movies lend themselves well to sequels, depicting worlds with endless possibilities and potential narratives. However, many of them fail to retain their cultural impact after the first installment.

The 2000s was a strange time for genre filmmaking and especially science fiction. While sci-fi cinema was in theory thriving, that was mainly thanks to the presence of franchises that were, in fact, their own mini-genres (like Star Wars and Star Trek). Then there were superhero films, always sort of a cousin to sci-fi, with the X-Men and Spider-Man series both exploding and the Marvel Cinematic Universe making its debut with Iron Man (2008) just as the decade came to a close.
But there were some top-shelf literary adaptations as well. Steven Spielberg’s A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001) was a flawed yet powerful expansion of a Brian Aldiss story while his War of the Worlds (2005) and Minority Report (2002) were outstanding takes on classic tales from H.G. Wells and Philip K. Dick (there might have been no sci-fi filmmaker more consistent at the time than The Beard). Other remakes or adaptations,...

Diesel has made at least $124 million just from his leading roles in the Fast & Furious movies, with Furious 7 being his highest-earning installment at $47 million. (Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
It's safe to say that Vin Diesel is an actor who has made the most out of every single opportunity given to him. From voicing Groot in Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise -- a role that requires him to say just three words over and over again most of the time (and in multiple languages) -- to leading the "Fast & Furious" series as Dom Toretto, Diesel has generated more than $14 billion at the box office through the movies he's starred in. Yet, it is a modest, mid-budget hit from a decade ago that remains arguably the most fascinating thing he's ever done. With 2013's "Riddick," Diesel used every tool at his disposal to bring a passion project to fruition.

Space: the final frontier. But instead of seeking out new life and new civilizations, the protagonists in these films are often trying to escape them. The vast, cold void of space is the perfect setting for horror. The isolation, the unknown, the realization that in space, no one can hear you scream. From derelict spaceships to alien planets, the cosmos offers a backdrop where our deepest fears can manifest far from the safety of Earth.
So, buckle up, space cadets, as we journey through the darkest corners of the universe with these ten spine-chilling space horror movies.
Screen Gems 10. Ghost of Mars (2001)
John Carpenter takes us to a Martian colony where miners unwittingly release ancient, malevolent spirits. Oops! As these spirits possess the miners, turning them into murderous zombies, a police officer (played by Natasha Henstridge) and a criminal (Ice Cube), and a whole motley crew must team up to survive.

Vin Diesel is a man of many franchises, some of which he himself has spearheaded. Alongside the hugely popular Fast & Furious, those franchises include the Pitch Black and XxX film series, the latter of which began his action star career. The initial 2002 film saw Xander Cage (Diesel) as an extreme sports enthusiast and rebellious stuntman working as a superspy for the National Security Agency, which tasked him to infiltrate a terrorist organization. The third film in the trilogy came in 2017’s xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, which saw Diesel return to the enter stage following the unsuccessful 2005 sequel starring Ice Cube. The Return of Xander Cage made over $346 million worldwide off a $85 million budget. Although a fourth film was announced by Diesel and director D.J. Caruso with The H Collective and Diesel’s own One Race Films production company, there’s currently a lawsuit preventing the movie from going forward.

Back in the early 2000s, audiences could treat themselves to a near-endless array of middlebrow, high-concept films every week. Pitch Black (2000), Reign of Fire (2002), Ghost Ship (2002), and every Final Destination film are just a handful of the offerings released during this era – some of which hold a special place in fans’ hearts. Whether it was a man with an ocular transplant fighting nocturnal aliens on a faraway world, or a bearded Matthew McConaughey jumping into the maw of a marauding dragon, it was easy to take for granted the embarrassment of riches at our collective moviegoing fingertips. Above all, these films presented an opportunity to set your mind to a low-thought mode and just enjoy the images unfurling in front of you in an endless stream of violent bliss.

In the previous season of the Masters of the Universe sequel series, dubbed Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Hordak was briefly shown, though the character's voice wasn't yet revealed. The Chronicles of Riddick franchise all started with Pitch Black, a modest science-fiction action thriller that was never intended to inspire an entire cinematic universe. A saga that will soon span over two decades with the release of Riddick 4: Furya, The Chronicles of Riddick has become a multimedia universe spanning four full-length movies, a straight-to-dvd animated movie, several video games, comics, and novelizations. All of this bonus material helps bridge the gap in the story between The Chronicles of Riddick and Pitch Black. Perhaps a modest example of creating a cinematic universe in the age of the mega-franchise, The Chronicles of Riddick proves smart filmmaking can still have a spot at the table.
A sleeper hit, Pitch Black quickly laid the groundwork to establish Vin Diesel as the franchise's titular character. Strangely enough, the movie exists as a completely isolated episode in the Riddick saga, contributing very little to...

Step into the shadows in The Boogeyman (2023), a spine-tingling horror film based on the short story by the legendary Stephen King. Directed by Rob Savage and written by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman, this film takes audiences on a chilling journey that explores the depths of fear and the resilience of the human spirit.
The Boogeyman follows troubled high school student Sadie Harper, and her precocious younger sister, Sawyer, still grappling with the recent loss of their mother. Their father, Will, a therapist dealing with his own intense pain, provides little comfort and closes himself off to the girls emotionally. Little do they know that their lives are about to take a sinister turn when a desperate patient seeking help unwittingly unleashes a terrifying supernatural entity that just so happens to prey on families and feed on their suffering. Talk about unlucky.

The Fast & Furious franchise has come a long way from its humble beginnings of street races and electronics theft. Now, the family has covered every base from globetrotting to undercover espionage, with Fast X being their latest adventure and kickstarting a final trilogy. However, no matter the installment, the one constant has been the stoic Dominic Toretto, played by Vin Diesel.
From the first installment, Dom was always a man of few words and fiercely protective over his family. Even before Brian O'Conner joined his ranks, Dom would've broken him in half had he not made amends for infiltrating his life as an undercover cop. That said, Dom's most intimidating qualities came from how Diesel embodied the character and made it his own. But there was a time when he wasn't a part of the project as it was reserved for another skilled actor -- Timothy Olyphant.

The ending of sci-fi thriller Pitch Black is full of pulse-pounding excitement, not only due to the presence of terrifying bioraptors, but also because two survivors, Riddick (Vin Diesel) and Carolyn (Radha Mitchell), cannot entirely trust each other, inspiring a unique theory that Riddick may have secretly stabbed Carolyn just before she's taken by one of the creatures. Along with Jack (Rhiana Griffith) and Imam (Keith David), ex-con Riddick and pilot Carolyn are the only people to make it to the end of the movie after a solar eclipse turns the planet into hunting grounds for light-sensitive predators.
The final moments before Riddick boards the ship with the vital power cells are a confusing jumble of fast edits, ambient lighting, and sometimes almost complete darkness. It's difficult to tell if, during this final confrontation between the survivors and the Pitch Black monster, Riddick's true nature as a selfish opportunist is going to emerge,...

In what role is action movie legend Vin Diesel the most badass? His ongoing work in the Fast and Furious franchise, with its flipping, flaming cars? Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, with their unstoppable, night-visioned antihero? No, of course not! Because Vin Deisel's role — the one that best demonstrates his immutable virility — is none other than Disney's family-friendly offering The Pacifier. As a Navy Seal turned long-term babysitter, Vin Diesel maintains his monotone effect throughout the put-upon chaos he's supposed to be mugging for. It increases the sense of dissonance that haunts the entire film: Even if you can suspend your disbelief in the movie's plot, you don't see a character on screen. You see Vin Diesel. Thankfully, among so many other action-hero-becomes a-family-man-movies, that becomes this movie's strength. (Pun intended).

Fast X may not be the penultimate entry in the Fast and Furious franchise after all. During a red carpet interview at the film’s world premiere in Rome, Vin Diesel appeared to confirm that Universal Pictures is considering a 12th movie.
When the face of the franchise was asked about its future, Diesel initially said he wanted to avoid “tipping the hat too much” before teasing the three-act finale. “Going into making this movie, the studio asked if this could be a two-parter,” Diesel said. “And after the studio saw this Part One, they said, ‘Could you make Fast X, the finale, a trilogy?’”
“It’s three acts in any story,” co-star Michelle Rodriguez added. Host Naz Perez followed up by asking if they were “confirming right now that we’re getting a third movie,” but the actors scurried away after Diesel quipped, “You’re gonna get me in trouble here.

Vin Diesel has two movies coming out this month. He has provided the voice of Groot for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (read our review Here), and he’s back in the role of Dominic Toretto for Fast X. Fast & Furious star Vin Diesel recently released Riddick: Furya concept art featuring his anti-hero wielding Furyan powers. Introduced in Pitch Black, former mercenary-turned-criminal Richard B. Riddick provides his skills as a warrior to aid a group of survivors escaping a desolate planet teeming with a violent alien species. Being a modest hit at the box-office, a strong following created by repeated television showings and home video sales led to an expanded The Chronicles of Riddick franchise centered on the character including two direct sequel films, a Pitch Black animated short film sequel, and multiple video games.

If you are artistically inclined, here’s a challenge for you. Design the dining area of a spaceship for a working class, blue-collar crew but, and here’s the catch, it can look nothing like the dining area of the commercial towing vehicle Uscss Nostromo. Let us know how many drafts you get through.
It is a look that is so ubiquitous in spaceship design that we barely even register it anymore, and yet it is also completely distinctive. Whereas before Ridley Scott‘s Alien we had seen spaceships as naval ships, wagon trains, and disheveled Vw camper vans, with the Nostromo we were introduced to the spaceship as a long-distance truck, as an ocean tanker, and as an oil rig. And like the titular alien star-beast, once it got through the airlock there was no getting rid of it. Here are some of the best stories to be inspired by,...

When "Alien 3" was released in 1992, it was roundly bashed by critics, met with uproar by fans, and later disowned by its director, David Fincher. Despite this, the troubled production and intrigue around Fincher's original vision have made it a constant source of fascination for "Alien" aficionados. One of the many subplots was the input of David Twohy, one of several writers involved in the film and whose biggest contribution was the setting of a prison planet populated by shaven-headed criminals.
Things didn't work out for Twohy on "Alien 3," but he got a chance to revisit that idea when he was offered the chance to rework and direct a screenplay that bore similarities to the "Alien" movies. Its most interesting character would become a vicious criminal named Richard B. Richard B. Riddick is a cool dude. He wears sunglasses all the time — welding goggles, to be specific. Never takes them off, even indoors or when prompted by the subtle gestures of polite society. He’s got a habit of stabbing people who try to talk to him. As a result, most people only speak of him, in awed tones. And as played by Vin Diesel, his own lines like “I bow to no man” and “The wolf moves among sheep” (both in reference to himself) are more growled than spoken. The character is a portrait of the beautiful vanity that only springs from a movie star with an entire sci-fi universe of his own, as he and director David Twohy have shepherded the Riddick franchise following its origination by screenwriters Ken and Jim Wheat. Where the latter duo’s script for 2000’s Pitch Black was a lean sci-fi thriller...

Why does Riddick wear goggles throughout the Chronicles Of Riddick franchise? Before being propelled to stardom with The Fast And The Furious, Vin Diesel's first breakout role was the convict Riddick in Pitch Black. Despite actors like Steven Seagal being suggested for Riddick, director David Twohy believed Diesel was the perfect choice. The character of Dom Toretto has become Diesel's most popular - both critically and in terms of box office - but Riddick is arguably his best character and performance. Unlike Dom, he's a lethal killer and loner who is almost repelled by contact with other humans.
That said, Riddick still has a code and sense of honor. The franchise has teased some of his backstory, with the character being born on the harsh planet of Furya, and the Furyans are gifted with almost superhuman strength and speed. The Chronicles Of Riddick's main villain the Necromongers later...

Vin Diesel's breakout role in Hollywood was playing antihero Richard B. Riddick in Pitch Black, and now a wild Riddick theory ties every movie he's made into the same universe. The success of the sci-fi sleeper hit, in which Riddick battled aliens on a remote planet, spawned two sequels, The Chronicles of Riddick and Riddick, but more importantly, it made Diesel an action-star, which he parlayed into the xXx movies, the mega-franchise Fast and Furious, and the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Currently, he's gearing up for Fast 10, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and at some point, another entry into the Chronicles of Riddick franchise.
Between hopping from one blockbuster franchise to another, Diesel has also appeared in dramas like Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, broad comedies like The Pacifier, and fantasy movies based on his passions, like the Dungeons & Dragons- esque The Last Witch Hunter.

Last month, it was announced that Vin Diesel and writer/director David Twohy are about ready to get rolling on Riddick: Furya, the fourth film in the Riddick franchise and a project that Diesel has been regularly mentioning pretty much ever since the third movie was released ten years ago, doing his best to keep the Riddick hype alive. His efforts must be working, because shortly after last month’s announcement all three of the previous Riddick movies cracked the Netflix top 10 in the United States. Pop Culture reported that, at one point, the Riddick movies were ranking in the top 10 in reverse order: “Riddick stands at number four, Chronicles of Riddick at number seven and Pitch Black at number nine.” So Diesel took to Instagram to celebrate the Netflix success of the films while mentioning that he’s working to get Riddick 4 into production.

Pitch Black (2000) began the live-action films in the Riddick franchise and was followed by its sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick (2004). When Pitch Black was released on February 18, 2000, few predicted it would become one of Vin Diesel’s most successful franchises. With a modest budget of $23 million, Pitch Black became a sleeper hit, eventually earning $53.2 million at the Box Office. Although it received mixed reviews from critics, most audience reviews were positive. The commercial success of Pitch Black spurned the sequel, set five years after the events of the first movie. Vin Diesel might be the name that towers over The Chronicles of Riddick franchise, but it includes many excellent actors whom people forget had anything to do with it. Diesel's break-out role as intergalactic criminal Richard B. Riddick debuted in Pitch Black, a sleeper hit in 2000 that featured a small cast and scope due to budget constraints, but its popularity allowed for an increase to both for its 2004 sequel The Chronicles of Riddick. With more world-building came more recognizable actors, and by the time the third movie Riddick premiered in 2013, it was full of familiar faces who have even more prominent careers today.

The Chronicles of Riddick franchise was best remembered for making a star out of Vin Diesel, but the full cast of the series was a star-studded lineup. Starting in the year 2000 with the sci-fi/horror film Pitch Black, the Riddick franchise hit the ground running and established itself as a unique cinematic experience that blended action elements with its science fiction and fantasy. Every movie in the series featured a diverse cast of established stars and up-and-comers, and many of the series' leading performers went on to become superstars in their own right.

With Vin Diesel returning to the title role, 2013's Riddick was an action-packed adventure, but its ending left a lot of questions. Following the success of 2000's Pitch Black and 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick, Riddick caught up with the shiny-eyed, super-powered criminal as he braved the barren wastes of a planet and fought bounty hunters. The film further explored the fascinating universe of the franchise, and also built upon the character while delivering the same excitement the franchise has consistently delivered. Though the critical response was mixed, the box office told another story and the movie grossed nearly $100 million (via Box Office Mojo).

Cult classic sci-fi thriller Pitch Black features some unique and frightening aliens, but the original plan for the monsters Riddick fights made them even scarier. Directed and co-written by David Twohy, with a script by Ken Wheat, it follows a ragtag group of survivors, including suspected murderer Richard B. Riddick (Vin Diesel) after their ship crash lands on a barren, inhospitable world. With dwindling light from the planet's multiple suns and limited resources, they come to rely on their dangerous passenger to survive, particularly when they realize that they're being stalked by the planet's only inhabitants - light-sensitive bioraptors.

Vin Diesel first appeared as Richard B. Riddick in 2000, but his The Chronicles of Riddick franchise has since become a streaming sensation, raising questions about Riddick's age in every movie. Though he is now best known for the Fast & Furious franchise, Diesel's debut as Riddick in 2000's Pitch Black forced the world to take notice of the actor, especially as a dynamic protagonist in an original sci-fi thriller. Though Pitch Black was a lean movie made for just $23 million dollars, it spawned a massive sequel in 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick, which broadened the world-building of its predecessor.
