Robert De Niro took the stage at the Kennedy Center on Sunday and, looking out at the balcony box where honoree Billy Crystal was sitting, told him of his career, “I had no idea you had done so much. And you’ve done it all in such a relatively short amount of time. You’re only 75. That means you’re just about six years away from being the perfect age to be elected president.”
The joke got some of the biggest audience cheers of the night — and a laugh from President Joe Biden, 81, embarking on a re-election campaign where his chronological advantage is, based on polls, top of mind to voters and the source of some doubts.
It was also one of a few references to age throughout Sunday evening’s Kennedy Center Honors which, in addition to Crystal, honored opera singer Renée Fleming, hip hop star and actress Queen Latifah,...

Judy Nugent, best known as a child actress on the ABC sitcom The Ruggles and an episode of Adventures of Superman, has died. She was 83. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Nugent passed away on Thursday, October 26, “surrounded by family at her Montana ranch after a short battle with cancer.” Born on August 22, 1940, in Los Angeles, California, Nugent first appeared on screen at age six in the romantic-comedy movie It Had to Be You (1947), where she and her sister Carol portrayed the same character at different ages. In 1949, she landed a regular role in TV’s first family sitcom, The Ruggles, which aired until 1952. One of her most memorable roles came in the 1954 episode of Adventures of Superman, “Around the World With Superman,” in which she played a blind girl who enters and wins a Daily Planet contest and has her eyesight restored by the Man of Steel before being whisked around the world.

Tony Bennett, the treasured American storyteller, singer and showman whose joyful impact on the pop and jazz landscape spanned 70 years and stretched from Queens to San Francisco and all around the world, died Friday. He was 96.
Bennett died in his hometown of New York, his publicist Sylvia Weiner said. In February 2021, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease five years earlier, but he soldiered on, in the recording studio and on tour, rarely performing a song the same way twice.
He and Lady Gaga headlined two shows at New York’s Radio City Music Hall in August 2021, after which he announced he was canceling his fall tour.
On his Facebook page, it was noted Friday that Bennett was “still singing the other day at his piano, and his last song was ‘Because of You.'” That was his first No. 1 hit.

“The Talk” co-host Amanda Kloots got the highest judges’ score on “Dancing with the Stars” on “First Elimination” night for her emotional foxtrot to “It Had to Be You,” which she and her late husband Nick Cordero danced to during their wedding. Certainly her years as a Broadway performer helped her capture the emotion and technique of her dance, but did “DWTS” fans agree with her high score? We asked our readers to let us know who they thought gave the best performance of the night. Scroll down for the full results.

Melanie C danced to a Spice Girls track on the “Dancing with the Stars” Season 30 premiere and now Jimmie Allen is like, “Hold my beer.” The country star is set to hit the parquet to one of his songs on Week 2.
Allen and Emma Slater will perform the rumba to the former’s “Billboard” Country Airplay topper “Make Me Want To” on Monday. The duo scored a 22 for their first dance, the tango, which was the third lowest score of the night, but the rumba could be a hit or a miss for any couple because of the hip action that may be too early in the game for some to nail. The rumba is one of six dances this week, the others being Viennese waltz, foxtrot, samba, tango and cha-cha. Speaking of hip action, Matt James and Lindsay Arnold are the only ones doing samba.

The gym of the Hollywood United Methodist Church is dressed to the nines. Paper and foam fish hang from the ceiling. Blue and silver streamer curtains line the walls. A statue of Poseidon towers over tables strewn with punch bowls. About 100 people add a rainbow’s array of color to the gym with 1950s-era dresses and suits. But they’re not doing the hand jive or the bop – they’re busting out their ’80s moves as the band plays Whodini’s 1984 funk-rap song “Freaks Come Out At Night.” The scene is a nighttime shoot in mid-March 1985 on the set of “Back to the Future.” Harry Waters Jr., who played Marvin Berry, the leader of the band at the dance, recalled the surreal experience of jamming with contemporary songs in between takes for a gym full of extras in 30 years out-of-date clothes. “It was a party! It was entirely too much fun,...

With its title reminiscent of that very old standard “It Had to Be You,” the new musical It Shoulda Been You sounds like a retread even before it starts. The impression does not abate once you get a whiff of the plot, which recalls dozens of moldy domestic comedies. Watching it, I at various times thought of Take Her, She’s Mine; Mary, Mary; Norman, Is That You?; and the Forest Hills bridezilla section of Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite. Those plays, part of a genre that flourished in the 1950s and 1960s, were mostly throwbacks already. With their generation-gap humor and culture-clash antics, their mixed marriages and children gone amok, they harked back at least as far as 1922, to the enormous hit Abie’s Irish Rose, which Robert Benchley described even then as having “the comic spirit of 1876.”A musical in that antique vein would seem to be a nonstarter now.

The last time Barbra Streisand was on “The Tonight Show” was in March 1963. That’s 51 years ago! But if there’s anyone capable of breaking that unfathomable (and just plain weird) streak, it’s Jimmy Fallon. Last night, she came on to promote her new album “Partners,” a collection of vocal duets that feature the likes of classic and modern day crooners like Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, John Legend and Josh Groban. Also on the record are Michael Buble, Blake Shelton and Elvis Presley,...

In what marks her first appearance as a late-night guest in over 50 years, Barbra Streisand appeared on The Tonight Show Monday to promote her new album Partners, which features the legendary diva performing duets with a number of high-profile male vocalists. She performed a medley of three of those tracks tonight, with Jimmy Fallon standing in for duet partners Elvis Presley ("Love Me Tender"), Blake Shelton ("I'd Want It to be You") and Michael Bublé ("It Had to Be You"). We all know Jimmy never avoids the opportunity to do bad musical impressions in a goofy Elvis wig and a cowboy hat, but even his hamming couldn't detract from the majesty that is Babs live.

Holiday songs! Pentatonix! Benatar! Glitter Blazers! The Sing-Off finale was everything I needed it to be and, yes, I did need it to be something. I needed it to be something my whole family could watch together while I’m home for the holidays. I needed it to be fun and exciting enough to make me think thoughts worthy of writing down later for fellow a cappella knuckleheads to read (“worthy” might be an overstatement, but where better for hyperbole than The Sing-Off?). And I needed it to be, as I think Nick Lachey once said, some damn fine music.

The cyclical nature of fashions and trends is baffling to some and fascinating to others. Who would have thought that in the year 2013, when many leading technologists believe that we are only a handful of years away from being able to purchase an entirely auto-piloted car, that our inclinations in terms of music and fashion would be more in line with those at the turn of last century.
And they are – there is no debating it. The fashion trend of the day clearly belongs to the Hipsters who blend vintage clothing from an array of different eras with oversized frames and modern footwear. There is, however, a style which is hard to blend due to the fact that its characteristics are so idiosyncratic and representative of that time that mixing them with apparel from other eras seems disrespectful and just plain wrong.

Betty Hutton was given a key supporting role in Victor Schertzinger’s 1942 musical comedy The Fleet’s In, starring Dorothy Lamour, William Holden, and Eddie Bracken. “Her facial grimaces, body twists and man-pummeling gymnastics take wonderfully to the screen,” enthused Pm magazine. (Hutton would have a cameo, as Hetty Button, in the 1952 remake Sailor Beware, starring Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, and Corinne Calvet.) The following year, Betty Hutton landed the second female lead in Happy Go Lucky (1943), singing Jimmy McHugh and Frank Loesser’s "Murder, He Says," and stealing the show from fellow Broadway import Mary Martin and former Warner Bros. crooner Dick Powell. We already knew Sports Illustrated cover model Kate Upton was great at being the object of men’s fantasies — hello, “Cat Daddy.” But lately, she’s been getting pretty good at appealing to women too. There was the unicorn-baby video she shot over the summer that tapped into some kind of Jungian symbolism we sort of got. And now, courtesy of Vogue Germany and director Bruce Weber, she’s fulfilling a bunch of literal fantasies we women have had — and some we didn’t even know we had until now. Enjoy the sounds of Bobby Darin’s “It Had to Be You” as we count all the ways in which we’d like to be in Kate’s shoes/bare feet.

Nora Ephron taught us to laugh about aging.
The screenwriter, director and best-selling author published two hilarious books on the topic: I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts On Being A Woman in 2006 and I Remember Nothing in 2010. Her essays managed to find the humor in the vagaries of aging -- turning the taboo topics of physical decline, emotional regrets and mental challenges into wry comic fodder.
“If anyone young is reading this, go, right this minute, put on a bikini and don’t take it off until you’re 34,” she wrote in I Feel Bad About My Neck. You have nine more years left on the nearly naked clock before it's all over, Ephron added. She advised readers to begin neck coverage by age 43, because makeup, botox and other visual tricks can be easily betrayed by the sight of a bare neck: “Our faces are lies and our necks are the truth.

Next month, "A League of Their Own," celebrates its 20th (!) anniversary. The consummate female baseball flick --which stars Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell and Jon Lovitz -- follows two sisters (Davis and Petty) who join the first female professional baseball league. The 1992 film, directed by Penny Marshall, quickly became a critical and commercial success. However, while "A League of Their Own" certainly dedicates a lot of screen time to the great American pastime, some of the movie's most memorable scenes happened off the field. Marla Hooch (Megan Cavanagh), the team's homely star hitter, came out of her shell when the girls broke out of their lodgings -- poisoning poor Miss Cuthbert -- and drunkenly sang "It Had To Be You" at the local bar, The Suds Bucket. While you, diehard "Loto" fan, may do your own rendition of Marla's performance -- ("I'm singing to Nelson!") --...

We’ve already got the The Black List, which highlights Hollywood’s top unproduced screenplays as voted on by those in the business. In an effort to dig deeper for more independent hidden talent, New York University has recently announced The Purple List, showcasing the top production ready feature screenplays written by students or recent alums of the Grad Film Program.
As voted on by a number of people in the industry, such as Jodie Foster, John Sayles and Karyn Kusama, could the below be the next Sin Nombre, Pariah, Circumstance or Gun Hill Road? Check out the list, which was founded by thesis students Ash Bhalla and Shandor Garrison. There is more on their official site, via indieWIRE, who also provide a quote from Nyu Grad Film Creative Director Spike Lee:

'American Idol' alums Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson took the stage at Sunday's awards show.

Music fans can always count on the Grammys to deliver a diverse lineup of attendees and incredible performances. And although there were somber moments due to the continued shock of Whitney Houston's death, the evening's killer performances brought moments of levity, like those of "American Idol" alums Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
Kelly Clarkson was up first with "Don't You Wanna Stay," her sweet and sentimental duet with Jason Aldean that was nominated for Best Country Duo/Pop Performance. Clarkson wore a floor-length black gown with a plunging neckline with metallic embellishments, her hair down and loose around her shoulders. Aldean, who was also nominated for Best Country Solo Performance, sported a suave-looking suit and his signature cowboy hat.

Singer and philanthropist who was married to Bob Hope for 69 years
The singer Dolores Hope, who has died at the age of 102, was known primarily for her 69-year marriage to the comedian Bob Hope, with whom she performed on television and in concerts for American troops stationed overseas. Growing up in the Bronx, New York, Dolores had always wanted to be a singer. Her husky voice and striking looks quickly brought her regular work under the stage name Dolores Reade (inspired by the Broadway star Florence Reed). In 1933, at the Vogue club in New York, Dolores's rendering of It's Only a Paper Moon captivated Hope, who was a rising Broadway star and performing in the musical comedy Roberta at the time. Hope became a constant visitor to the Vogue thereafter, and the couple married on 19 February 1934. Dolores joined his vaudeville show and they moved to Los Angeles.

After a successful Shania Twain night on American Idol, the show has decided to go back to legend territory with the songs of Frank Sinatra.
Frank Sinatra, and big band tunes in general, have never quite fit right on the Idol stage (John Stevens I'm looking at you) but my inkling is that this year will be a bit different. For starters, the show now focuses more are artistry and musicianship than ever before which means that each contestant at the Top 5 mark has a better understanding of what generally works for them. Sure they slip along the way, but the cheesiness and overall lame-factor of previous seasons has been chipped away by the likes of Crystal Bowersox and Lee DewYze. Plus, Harry Connick Jr. is not only mentoring but arranging the music and writing the orchestrations for each performance. Classy.

After making a concerted effort to remain current, "American Idol" turns to the past this week with a tribute to Frank Sinatra. Modern day crooner Harry Connick, Jr. serves as the mentor and guide through Frank's world. It's not the first time the "American Idol" contestants will try to channel some Rat Pack vibes, as a handful of competitors have tackled tunes and the eighth season featured an entire week devoted to the Rat Pack (where Alison Iraheta famously delivered her excellent "Someone to Watch Over Me").
We won't know what the five remaining season nine finalists will break out on Tuesday night's (May 4) episode of the show, but here's what the all-time competition looks like.
Katherine McPhee, "Someone to Watch Over Me"
It's a song written by the Gershwins and probably made more popular by Ella Fitzgerald, but McPhee nailed the song so perfectly that Frank would have certainly been proud.

One year ago, under the tutelage of Jamie Foxx, the "American Idol" kids welcomed the gentlemen of the Rat Pack into the Nokia Theatre. Season eight's Danny Gokey wowed the judges with a bluesy take on "Come Rain or Come Shine" and Adam Lambert donned a shiny white suit for a rendition of "Feeling Good" that Kara DioGuardi called "confusing and shocking and sleazy and superb!"
This season, the invitations for Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and all but one of the Rat Packers must have gotten lost in the mail, because only Frank Sinatra will be represented on Tuesday night's (May 4) live show. Come rain or come shine, Crystal Bowersox, Lee Dewyze and the rest of the top five will attempt to fly "Idol" voters to the moon.
