Controversial TV1 series Killing Time is finally coming to Australian television. Originally earmarked to screen in September last year, the series was famously delayed because of proceedings in the Supreme Court of Victoria. The hard-hitting 10-part drama tells the story of fallen, former criminal lawyer Andrew Fraser who, at one stage, seemed untouchable as he represented the famous and .notorious. . including feared criminal Dennis Allen and fallen businessman Alan Bond. Fraser made a fortune out of the Melbourne underworld and eventually joined them when cocaine started to take over his life. He was jailed for five years in 2001 on drug offences. However only the first six episodes of TV1's biggest local production will initially screen from early November...

We have been able to emotionally connect with a considerable amount of band performances, but nothing resonates more profoundly within us than acoustic shows. Well, maybe except if it was an acoustic video performance by our longtime lover, Bayside. No, we are not dating, but a girl can wish. The alternative rock band stopped by Last.fm studios to discuss their first single, “Sick, Sick, Sick,” off their album, Killing Time. Check out lead singer, Anthony Raneri, explain the meaning of the track and watch him and lead guitarist, Jack O’Shea, perform an acoustic version of the tune. You can catch Bayside live on their ‘Take Action Tour’ with Silverstein, which [...]...

Blockbuster – the one-time giant in the home video rental business which went bankrupt last September – was bought at auction this past week by Dish Network for $320 million. According to Dish, it intends to combine its wireless technology with Blockbuster’s brand name recognition, studio relationships and digital rights to re-establish Blockbuster as a player in the direct-to-home market against Netflix and newer contenders like Amazon and a Warner Bros. online rental service to be offered on Facebook.
However this plays out long-term, the auction buy is the last page in a final chapter begun back in September when Blockbuster busted. To trot out the old cliché, it’s the – everybody now — end of an era.
The business Blockbuster used to be in seemed revolutionary in its day, though it seems almost quaint now; come Friday, some delegate from the family would trot to the neighborhood video store hoping to get...

Our anxiety has been relieved wholeheartedly with the release of Bayside’s latest album, Killing Time. Although we were offered a teaser of the album’s tracks on Myspace, nothing is the same as owning your own Bayside album. Killing Time dropped on February 22nd via Wind-up Records. This release marks the first through the label. Prior Bayside albums had been released via Victory Records. The recent album is compiled of 11 tracks, which include the bonus track, “Don’t Come Easy.” Killing Time puts their previous album, Shudder, to shame. We forgive you, Bayside, for that barely classified alternative rock album. Killing Time makes up for it. And the Bayside domination persists. Alternative Press [...]...

We’re half-way through the first quarter of 2011 and we finally have a release that’s guaranteed to surpass the 100,000 mark and could be the first blockbuster of the year, Adele's "21," out Feb. 22. The album has already released in much of the rest of the world and debuted at No. 1 in more than a dozen countries. Expect the same here. Adele, “21” (Xl/Columbia): British thrush and previous Grammy winner for best new artist returns with her second album, produced by Rick Rubin and prefaced by the galloping “Rollin’ In the Deep.” Bayside, “Killing Time” (Wind-Up): Gil Norton (The Pixies,...

Feel like your just “killing time” until Bayside’s fifth album, Killing Time, drops on February 22nd? Well, us too. So, we have a little teaser for you: an interview with the lead singer of the alternative rock band, Anthony Raneri. The Queens natives have been making music for a little over a decade, but with Killing Time, the quartet has made their biggest leap of faith in the music industry. The band will release the upcoming album via Wind-Up Records, rather than their former label Victory Records. This label change has allowed Bayside to work on this masterpiece of 12 tracks for about a year. Time has certainly played a significant [...]...

This is hardly their first tour to India. But each time the decade-old, psy trance duo Infected Mushroom come to India, they spread some more of their infectious energy. On this visit, Erez Eisen and Amit Duvedevani are touring Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and New Delhi. As always, it’s close to an album launch. Their last visit was in December 2009, when they released their eighth studio album, Legend of the Black Shawarma. Their sound is just as quirky as the title of their last album. Their newest single, Killing Time, has risen to No. 24 on the Billboard dance charts. <Img alt="Infected ...

The professional tennis circuit isn’t just about the Grand Slams. In this periodic series, Vf.com goes behind the scenes at the tournaments that lead up to the U.S. Open, in August. Thirty-two of the A.T.P.’s finest played at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, Rhode Island, last week. It’s the only professional grass-court tournament on American soil. There was perhaps no player, however, who arrived with more buzz than Alejandro Falla, the 64th-ranked player in the world who had nearly pulled off the greatest upset in Grand Slam history. Drawing living legend and six-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer in the first round of the British tournament this year, Falla shockingly won the first two sets and served for the match before losing to the Swiss champ in five sets. Despite a first-round exit in Newport, Falla, who resides in Bogota,...

It’s been four years since Encore published its Top 20 Directors and Producers list, and we felt it was time to compile a new, more comprehensive list that included professionals working across all areas – film, television and Tvc production – as well as the leaders and decision-makers that determine the direction of the industry.
Instead of having a limited list of panellists, we consulted with the main agencies and organisations, and also asked our readers to nominate their candidates. We ended up with a list of more than 200 screen industry professionals, and deciding the final 50 was indeed a difficult task. Of course, some other very influential and successful people didn’t make the final cut, but there were only 50 spots and too many talented men and women!
We hope you’ll enjoy – or not, and if so, debate it passionately – the selection of what will become our annual Power 50 list.

Rivalries between the states are inevitable but ultimately unproductive. While Victoria may not have the highest production investment total of the year, the cultural capital of Australia is strengthening its local slate.
Victoria is considered Australia’s cultural capital, so why isn’t it the country’s screen production capital too, or at least not anymore?
According to the National Survey of Feature Film and TV Drama Production, in 2008/09 the value of the feature and TV drama production slate in Victoria was $157m, 23 percent down from last year’s
$251m. The drop placed Victoria behind Nsw and its $434m, for the third time in the last five years.
All states savour the moment when statistics favour their efforts, but sometimes the numbers are not on their side. However, there are reasons behind this apparent under-performance, and things that those same numbers are not telling.

When you have an $11.4m comedy in your hands, a sequel is a no-brainer, even if it takes 10 years to make it happen. Miguel Gonzalez met with the creators of The Kings of Mykonos and discussed why ‘ethnic’ content is the secret to domestic and international success.

Producer Danny Mackay has announced that Peter Andrikidis will direct Simpson, a story about a stretcher bearer and ‘donkey whisperer’ who died in Gallipolli.
“We won’t look at budgeting until Peter and Sam [Meikle, writer] have completed their new drafts. From that we will budget but we expect it to be substantial,” Mackay told Encore.
Mackay said that he expects a mix of Australian and overseas locations, but the director’s drafts will influence this decision.
“When is difficult to calculate with accuracy because of everything we need to complete before that is decided. This also pertains to who will be funding it, but we have established wide interest at least,” he explained.
The producer attended the recent International Day of the Donkey – organised by Donkey Rescue – to discuss the project with donkey owners and look for the right animal to play Simpson’s donkey.

Boys and girls, cats and dogs, people of all ages, it’s time for another installment of Freelance Writers Do (& Say) The Darnedest Things. With almost three decades’ experience editing magazines, I have countless anecdotes about the strange behavior of freelancers when interacting with especially curmudgeonly editors (like me). Here are three more—though let me warn you, there are No punchlines here, just mysteries.
To start, I should explain one basic fact. Freelancers usually first come to a magazine editor’s attention by either sending in an already done interview all written up in manuscript (so we can read and see what’s offered for sale) or pitching someone they could talk to (along with writing samples so we can judge the risk of moving forward). After a freelancer has repeated this a couple times and trust has been established, the editor may begin giving him assignments (“We have...

9:03 I recently flew home to visit my parents who were moving out of my childhood home. One of my brother's friends was living in their basement. Killing time one night, I watched How I Met Your Mother on the ancient TV system. It only seemed to carry the broadcast networks. It's like the TV had absorbed my parents refusal to join the modern world. Anyway... while watching the show, my brother's friend comes in the room and says "this is a funny show but you know what the funniest show is? Two and a Half Men. I Love that show."
This is why people like Jeff Probst win "Best Host of a Reality TV Program"
9:07 Gilles Marini is thrusting so often on that clip from Dancing With the Stars I feel like he should be punished on an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

My iPhone has gotten me out of a lot of jams. Like the time my subway got stuck underground for 30 minutes. Or when the doctor’s office was full. Or when I was in a meeting about the best times to have meetings. Few things in the history of the world have curtailed the spread of boredom like the iPhone. Personally my go-to “I’m bored” game is a match-three with the ridiculous moniker of “Smiles.” It’s polish, smooth and oddly compelling. But I put it to you guys! What iPhone game do you guys play to kill time?

It's always amusing when certain conservative bloggers reach for their smelling salts to deplore the vulgar language and coarse ribaldry on liberal blogs, which demonstrates (to them) that liberals are incapable of expressing themselves without fouling the King's English and leaving a nasty carpet stain. From the way some of these upholders of propriety and gentility go on, you'd think conservative blogs were the tender caretakers of the tradition of G. K. Chesterton, Ronald Knox, the Roman philosophers, the St. James version of the Bible, and William Buckley's witticisms, deploying patient logic and persuasion while the Kossacks and the T'boggers run wild with their incontinent words and feelings and Wiffle Ball bats. But it doesn't take too long a stroll along the gamy storefronts of conservative blogs to come across boiling snake pits of cursing, personal attack, and raw bigotry that give lie to this pretense of civility and clerical composure.
