Hansel and Gretel
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit stars as Hansel in this interesting cartoon from Walter Lantz.
The story is produced as if it is a grade school production of the fairy tale, with the characters speeding their lines in a simple recitative manner. The entire score is handled as some one playing a piano in a clunky manner. Although this aspect of the cartoon soon palls, some very elaborate visuals compensate. The witch is a fang-toothed crone and the mother is voiced by a man, as if some adult teacher was unwillingly cast in the role. Although the gags that are liberally scattered through the short are not that good, the overall production is a very interesting handling of the overused story.
