All is not well with this Oswald cartoon
TheLittleSongbird14 May 2017
Despite Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and his cartoons being popular and well received at the time, they have been vastly overshadowed over time by succeeding animation characters. It is a shame as, while not cartoon masterpieces, they are fascinating for anybody wanting to see what very old animation looked like.

'Oil's Well', interesting only really for being Walter Lantz's second Oswald cartoon, is not a good representation of a more than decent character and series with some good cartoons, one of his weakest if anything. Lantz made some good and more cartoons, with particular success with the Woody Woodpecker cartoons, but 'Oil's Well' is not a good representation of him either.

Not unwatchable by all means. Some of the animation, although not exactly refined and with some jumpy transitions here and there, is not bad at all, are crisp and fluid enough with some nice detail especially with animation techniques still in early days. A couple of the gags are amusing, and there is some nice energy in some of the music.

However, 'Oil's Well' suffers from the exact same problems of Lantz's first Oswald cartoon 'Race Riot', which isn't a good cartoon either. Synchronisation between music and sound effects and how they fit with the images has been much better before and since and far less sloppy too. The sound can lack resonance and the picture quality lacks clarity in places.

Apart from a few amusing moments, 'Oil's Well' is not particularly funny or inventive with much-less-than-crisp timing, the story is flimsier than most Oswald cartoons and Oswald himself is not endearing or funny here (a shame because he usually is).

Overall, disappointing. 3/10 Bethany Cox

Oil's Well is an interesting curio as the second Oswald the Lucky Rabbit short for Walter Lantz but that's it

Warning: Spoilers
Just watched this Walter Lantz Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon on YouTube. Not only is this the second Oswald cartoon for Lantz, it's also Lantz' second as producer. In this one, Oswald is wooing his girlfriend (who looks like a cat) on a canoe. Like Felix the Cat, Oswald sometimes uses his tail for something other than wagging, in this case, he uses it as an outboard motor to bring the boat to shore. It's there that he proposes marriage to her but her father (who looks like a dog leading me to believe she was adopted) takes her away as he doesn't approve of Oswald. Undeterred, Oswald uses his car (which was previously the canoe) to jack up to her apartment to woo her with his trombone which she rides on back to the car. The father follows right behind on a stolen delivery stork which he uses to shoot stork's eggs at the rabbit. When they all fall to the ground, the father makes Oswald dig his own grave but all is forgiven when the Lucky Rabbit strikes oil...Some of the gags I mentioned were pretty amusing but this was a pretty blah cartoon for me especially when the music and sound effects were once again off sync though since this was an early sound film, I guess that's understandable. And the print I saw wasn't very good. But if you're interested in early sound animation, Oil's Well is at least worth a look.
