Mama said knock you out! Well, LL Cool J did at least. Look, we all know egos and testosterone can be a dangerous combination in the locker room, but when you put that locker room on the set of a major motion picture, things can really blow up. And that’s just what happened during the making of Any Given Sunday, when Jamie Foxx – then trying to make a name as a dramatic actor – and LL Cool J – the hero of Deep Blue Sea – got into it, with the rapper trying to get ahead of an entirely different kind of shark.
In the Any Given Sunday scene in question, Foxx’s Willie Beaman and LL Cool J’s Julian Washington were to get into it over mishandling the ball. With tensions building apparently just from being on the same field as one other, LL Cool J reached over star Al Pacino...

Fresh off the Sundance-winning “Girls Will Be Girls,” Indian actor-producers Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal have unveiled a further slate from their Pushing Buttons Studios.

Just as they did three years ago, the two sides resolved their dispute just before the Big Game broadcast.
There is nothing like football to end a dispute between channel providers and distributors. Just as Disney and cable giant Spectrum did ahead of the first “Monday Night Football” game of the season and the satellite and streaming company did with station-owners Tegna on the same day that the NFL playoffs began, Directv and Cox Media Group (Cmg) announced on Sunday that they have ended an eight-day retransmission dispute that has kept 13 channels in nine media markets off the air for over a week for Directv, Directv Stream, and U-verse customers. Two of those channels were CBS local affiliates, meaning that now that the dispute is over, Directv customers in Dayton, Ohio and the Seattle-Tacoma, Washington markets will have access to the Super Bowl Lviii airing on Sunday evening.

It’s been almost 10 years since Cameron Diaz’s last film appearance — but we have some good news. With Back in Action, Diaz is, well, back in action alongside her Any Given Sunday and Annie co-star Jamie Foxx. The pair play seemingly average parents with a big secret: They used to be incredibly skilled secret agents. Coaching Little League is a bit of a step down.

The WWE Network streaming service will shutter at the end of 2024, as all of its content will move to Netflix outside the United States.
The WWE is officially coming to the world’s largest streaming service. Earlier this week, Netflix and the WWE agreed to an international deal that will see “Monday Night Raw” air live on Netflix every week for the next decade in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and other territories — although, the “Monday Night” part of the name might need to be changed. Outside the U.S., the deal also means that WWE titles like “SmackDown,” “Nxt” and live premium events will also move to Netflix, but where does that leave the on-demand WWE Network?

Netflix took a leap off the top rope to grab rights to the WWE’s Monday Night Raw in its biggest commitment so far to live programming. But despite that surprise swerve into the world of pro wrestling, the streamer is toeing the line about not bidding for more live sports rights anytime soon.
Co-CEO Ted Sarandos reiterated comments he made in the fall that while Netflix is “in the sports business,” it’s not looking to make huge rights commitments to major sports leagues.
In Netflix’s fourth quarter earnings call Tuesday, Sarandos noted that the WWE is “sports entertainment” — i.e., one that has scripted outcomes and emphasizes storytelling (WWE impresario Vince McMahon coined the term, partly to argue that his shows shouldn’t be subject to regulations that sports like boxing must adhere to). That kind of programming “is right in our sweet spot, which is about the drama of sport,...

Senior died Jan. 1 of pneumonia and heart failure in a hospital near his home in Borehamwood, England, Conor Nolan, his friend and onetime Warner Bros. colleague, told The Hollywood Reporter.
A native of South Africa, Senior joined Warner Bros. in 1970 after an eight-year run at MGM, where he was an advertising and publicity consultant in its European Regional Office, and he stuck with the studio through 2000.

The Rock is officially back in business with the WWE.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been appointed to the board of directors of Tko, the public company that owns the WWE and UFC. Tko announced Johnson’s appointment Tuesday morning.
In addition, the company is granting Johnson full ownership of his trademarked in-ring name “The Rock,” with the actor and entrepreneur inking a services and merchandising agreement with the company. Thanksgiving has long been associated with football — NFL games on the holiday date back decades and typically deliver the league’s biggest regular-season TV audiences in any given year.
The past couple years, however, Christmas has also fallen within the NFL’s usual weekend footprint, and the league has capitalized. Coupled with huge New Year’s Day numbers for one of college football’s most recognizable games, the holiday period was an especially football-heavy one on TV.
Elsewhere, CBS (also with an assist from the NFL) scored a bit of an upset on New Year’s Eve; Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building found a new audience on ABC; and NBC’s new comedy Extended Family had a decent start.
Running down the ratings highlights from the end of 2023 and start of 2024:
The NFL had an unusually good Christmas weekend, with four games — one on Dec. 24 and three on Dec.

At one point, the biggest story surrounding Back in Action was the return of Cameron Diaz, who hadn’t released a movie since 2014. But when Jamie Foxx was taken to the hospital for a “medical complication”, the attention shifted to that star. But the media redirecting their focus to Foxx and his mysterious illness wasn’t the issue for Diaz. It was the rumors and speculation about delays and her co-star’s onset behavior – all of which she is debunking.
While cameras rolled on Back in Action, word circulated that Jamie Foxx was the cause for a “miserable” on-set environment, nonsense which Cameron Diaz has no tolerance for, telling Molly Sims on her podcast (via The Hollywood Reporter), “I really hate all of the things that were being said about our set…You just want to scream at the top of your lungs, like, ‘What are you talking about?’” She added,...

Jamie Foxx was born Eric Marlon Bishop on December 13, 1967. He changed his name when he began his career in stand-up comedy and chose “Foxx” to honor one of his comedic idols, Redd Foxx. He picked the first name “Jamie” because he noticed that female comics were usually given earlier times on open mic nights and he thought the androgynous name of Jamie might get him onstage earlier in the evening.
Foxx’s love of comedy began early. By third grade he was already doing stand up for his elementary school classes. His popularity was such that if the class behaved properly the teacher would reward them by letting young Jamie tell them jokes. He moved to Los Angeles when he grew up and began appearing on the comedy circuit until he was cast on the television sketch show “In Living Color” alongside other newcomers such as David Alan Grier and Jim Carrey.

Jamie Foxx has been making sporadic appearances since suffering a “medical complication” back in April. But a special honor has put him back on the stage, giving a speech in which he expressed his gratitude and shared his experience with attendees.
Jamie Foxx – who was being honored with the Vanguard Award at the Critics Choice Association’s Celebration of Cinema & Television Honoring Black, Latino & Aapi Achievements – delivered a ~12-minute speech at the event (as per Deadline), saying, “I want to thank everybody. I’ve been through something, I’ve been through some things.” Those things still remain shrouded in mystery, but it is great to see Foxx back in the spotlight, especially since he wasn’t even able to walk six months ago. The award was given by Jurnee Smollett, co-star of The Burial, in which Foxx played lawyer Willie E. Gary.

Seeing as how the football season is in full swing, filling up the TV over the next few weekends, how can the multiplex prey those sports fanatics away from the small screens? Easy. put a real-life underdog football story on the big screens. Ah, but there are a couple of twists. Unlike Rudy or Any Given Sunday, this new film actually focuses on what the USA sports fans call soccer, but called football globally. Oh, and it does take place way way across that globe, though it’s still technically part of this country. Plus it’s not the typical inspirational inspired-by-real-events drama, but a rollicking comedy helmed by one of the current kingpins of slapstick farce. This ragtag team of misfits just wants to score one point, perhaps in the hope that the Next Goal Wins.
And just where is the setting for this story? Why, it takes place...

The final trailer for The Marvels sees a band of heroes unite for “one last fight.”
Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel joins forces with Iman Vellani’s Kamala Kahn/Ms. Marvel, Teyonah Parris’ Captain Monica Rambeau, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and potentially more Marvel characters to defeat Zawe Ashton’s Dar-Benn in the upcoming superhero film.
The two-minute look at the sequel debuted during Monday Night Football and kicks off with a look back at the Avengers’ war against Thanos, which set up the stakes for The Marvels team as they prepare to go up against a powerful enemy.
“This is just the beginning,” Ashton’s villain says early in the trailer, as she opens a hole in space, leading to a different reality leading into Earth. “She can’t be matched. Can’t be controlled,” Jackson’s Fury tells Carol, before adding, “I...

WWE’s Nxt won out in the so-called Tuesday Night War against Aew’s “Dynamite.”
According to the Nielsen overnight ratings, Nxt pulled in 921,000 viewers on Tuesday night with 396,000 in the key adults 18-49 demographic. “Dynamite” averaged 609,000 viewers with 346,000 in the demo. While that is a far cry from the numbers seen during the Monday Night Wars between WWE (then WWF) and WCW, it is still a resounding victory for WWE, with Nxt up approximately 7.5% compared to last week’s show.
The two shows do not typically air against each other. Nxt currently runs on Tuesdays on USA Network, while “Dynamite” airs on Wednesdays on TBS. But the Major League Baseball playoffs on TBS this week meant that “Dynamite” needed to shift nights, putting them once again in direct competition with WWE’s developmental show.
Both companies tried to pull out all the stops to draw viewers. Aew announced what they called “Title Tuesday,...

Any Given Sunday is considered by many to be the last genuinely great Oliver Stone movie to date. While the director has made his share of movies since this film came out in 1999, after the failure of his controversial epic Alexander, arguably, they have yet to have the staying power of the movies he made at his peak. Any Given Sunday was a departure for Stone, whose work to that point had been inherently political, but, on closer inspection, the movie carries many of his themes, such as American hero worship, corporate greed, and more. Al Pacino stars as a legendary coach whose team, the Miami Sharks, is floundering. Yet, a new hero on the Gridiron, Willie Beeman, played by a young Jamie Foxx, begins the rise and turns the team’s fortunes around. Dennis Quaid, Cameron Diaz, James Woods, Aaron Eckhart, L.L Cool J and real-life NFL vets Lawrence Taylor...

The Tko Holdings era of WWE is off to a raucous start with the news that “WWE Friday Night SmackDown” is headed to the USA Network in October 2024. “Monday Night Raw” and “Nxt” will remain on the NBCUniversal cable channel through September 2024, but rumor has it that both properties will leave USA at that time for another yet-unknown destination.
The “SmackDown” deal is for five years and includes the weekly episodic wrestling program along with four primetime specials per year that will air on NBC, a first for the network. While no financial information was provided at this time, pundits believe the deal will run NBCU about $1.4 billion, an increase when compared to the deal WWE got from Fox.

The first person you see on screen in Taika Waititi’s “Next Goal Wins” is Taika Waititi. The director himself shows up wearing a long mustache and priestly garb as the quasi narrator of his own movie. He’s doing a funny voice, and explaining the themes of what we are about to watch. This intro highlights perhaps the main issue with this occasionally funny but frequently messy sports movie: The dominant voice is Waititi’s, to the extent that we can’t hear any of the other characters. “Next Goal Wins” is a movie that gets too wrapped up in its own quirk to develop any compelling arcs.
Waititi adapts the film from the 2014 documentary of the same name by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison...

With its carriage fight with Charter about to enter its second week, Disney issued a statement blasting the Spectrum TV owner’s “indifference” to customers and a Wall Street investment bank predicted a compromise by the ESPN parent.
“As the U.S. Open reaches the men’s and women’s finals, and fans gear up for a weekend of college football and the opening of the NFL season, it’s unfortunate that Charter decided to abandon their consumers by denying them access to our great programming,” Disney said. “While they have stated their ‘indifference’ to the needs of millions of paying customers, we will not lose sight of what is most important – investing in the highest-quality stories, news and sports for our audience. Actor James Caan almost got into a smackdown with director Sam Peckinpah during the making of The Killer Elite.
Peckinpah allowed for an explosion to be detonated near Caan’s face, which amped up the actor’s anger. “I said to Sam, ‘I’ll beat you like a redheaded stepchild,'” Caan told Bright Lights Film Journal in 2022.
“He was great, though, just insane,” he recalled. “As a matter of fact, when someone wrote a book about him, I was asked to give a quote for the cover. They had four quotes on the back. He called and said mine was the best. I had written, ‘Two more signatures and I’ll have him committed.'”
During the interview, Caan recalled how Peckinpah seemingly met his match on set. “He was like a great intimidator, but he found out really quick – I told him I would kick his f***ing ass.

Martin Amis, the British author of 15 novels including “Money: A Suicide Note” and “The Zone of Interest,” has died on May 19 of esophageal cancer at the age of 73, according to his publishing house Alfred A. Knopf.
His death comes just days after Jonathan Glazer’s film adaptation of his 2014 novel “The Zone of Interest” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Rick Dalton, the protagonist of Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” played by Leonardo DiCaprio, has died at 90.
Or, uh, that was the news from Tarantino’s podcast “The Video Archives” as announced on Friday.
