Never Go After The Guy With Portable Holes
boblipton4 June 2019
The big, dumb dog likes to chase the cat.... without success, of course. A small dog with a "Tell you what I'm gonna do!" delivery offers advice on how to get the cat to come to you in this very funny Colunmia cartoon.

It's produced by Binder & Katz during that period when Columbia was handing over cartoon production to UPA, but still had a backlog of product from what had been Charles Mintz' cartoon factory. Since before Mintz' death in 1940, cartoon production had been in a state of chaos, with no production team lasting more than a couple of years, and the regulars like Sid Marcus and Howard Swift left on their own.

Fortunately, at this moment, Bob Clampett was under contract to Columbia. While he isn't credited as director here, but writer, you can clearly see a bunch of gags from Termite Terrace, like Freleng's run-through-the-door-slam-it-and-come-out-of-another, Tex Avery's bug-eyed reactions to sexy fakes, and of course, Clampett's sense of speed to get on the next gag.

Up N' Atom was a rare hilarious Columbia cartoon

Warning: Spoilers
Just watched this Columbia/Screen Gems cartoon on YouTube as linked from the Saturday Morning Blog. The beginning has a mouse running with a cat behind doing the same. The narrator asks if this is another cat chasing mouse cartoon. The mouse-with a British accent-says no, "it's a dog chasing cat cartoon" as we pull back revealing a big dog chasing the cat. The mouse then goes by himself and says he was just doing his morning exercise. The rest of the cartoon then has the cat outsmarting the dumb dog. There's more than what I just described in the synopsis but I'll just say this is one of the most creatively funny animated shorts in the Columbia output from the late '40s which should probably come as no surprise to Bob Clampett fans since Clampett thought of the story here! While he didn't direct also, Sid Marcus manages to be almost as good as Clampett would have been. In fact, gags like the cat taking his eyes off like glasses or having them divide into three outside his face when he sees a sexy girl also brings to mind Tex Avery. Nothing else to say except this was a rare hilarious cartoon from the Torch Lady studio so on that note, I highly recommend Up N' Atom.
