What more could you want? Your very own x-file. It's great to look around and actually interact with the cast of the show. You aren't that limited to what you can do in this game which makes it fun and frustrated. You can get lost easily, but there is an option to make the game easy. A must play for anyone who likes detecting.

Interesting and difficult game to play

This was one of the few major games I could play on my old PowerMac, so I was very thankful for the opportunity to even play it. Tough, intriguing and sometimes frustrating, I enjoyed the time I got to play on it, despite the ire I drew from my parents. The only thing I didn't like was Agent Willmore, who was poorly casted in the role. Beyond that, a good show!

The X Files game is more about watching something than being part of anything. It's got some crude level of being interactive, but it's easily summed up as an exercise in playing along. The production qualities (matching the show's tone) are outstanding for a game as are the cast well suited to the material. While the story links up nicely with the ongoing saga of the X Files. The flip side could be said that if you don't watch the show - what motivation is there for playing this however. As a fan, it's fun to watch your computer screen and see recognizable faces pop up here and there. Although admittedly they are few and far in between.
The story starts when Agents Mulder and Scully disappear. You've given a hint of what happened by the game's opening cutscene, but only a glimpse of what's to come. You are Agent Craig Willmore stationed in the FBI's Seattle field office. Who needless to say is given the task of investigating the agents disappearance.
Overall, this is a C+ game bathed in A+ bells & whistles. The video quality featured is fantastic and the best I've seen used in a game to this point, but I would not recommend this to anyone who isn't a fan of the X Files. Fans are willing to overlook things both big and small in the off chance of getting to be part of the X Files and that is what this game capitalizes on. So if you're a fan of the show by all means give this game a chance. If you're not a fan of the X Files, you'll probably want to stay away.

I'm not really into the whole video game scene. But since I have a playstation, had some toys r us card money to spend, and love The X Files I figured what the heck? And i'm so glad I bought it. Even thought you don't get to see as much GA and DD as I would like to, the game is fun and entertaining. I still haven't beat it...I got to the last level though! I love the fact that I can act how I would normally act and see if I would cut it as an FBI agent. The whole live-action thing is really cool too. Two thumbs up...fine family fun!

Ok, so I've heard this game is only popular among extreme X-Philes. Well, I call myself an X-phile, but I definitely don't take it to the extreme. And I liked it.
The plotline is good - admittedly, some details don't really need to be there. But they do add to the characters. Best part is that while the storyline of the game fits in with the series, it can is just a complimentary material, the same as the movie. Graphics are fine, since most of this is live-acting anyway. However, there are times when you wish certain screens had been made a little lighter, to actually make it possible to find the evidence you need, without triple-checking the scene. But that's ok. I got used to it.
My game did a few glitches - but I can't be sure that they are in the game itself, or due to the fact my copy was a previously played game and could therefore been slightly damaged.
In my personal opinion, this isn't the greatest game there is, but it is one worth playing.

This game is very good. X-Files fans will love it. I think that this is a game you can play over and over again. If you need help on the game I am the man to ask. I have beaten the game at least four times so I know A LOT about the game and how to beat it.

This game manages to get you into the world of the X-Files in a way you've never experienced. It combines high tech graphics with real video clips shot exclusively for this game. You'll have a lot of places to visit, while you search for missing agents Mulder and Scully (Skinner will help you on your search). You can collect evidence, take it to the lab (or maybe to the morgue), touch a lot of things like you were really there, talk to everyone you meet thru agent Craig Willmore... can you make thru all of 7 CD roms?

I bought this game just because it was "X-Files" - boy was I pleasantly suprised. The video in this game is great, and the game is addictive! I played it for 5 straight hours one night. For those who love videogames, but aren't very skilled, there is an easy skill level on the PSX version - highly recommended.

This game is the best one around! It has been very well written and filmed, and with super special effects. It takes you on an X-Files adventure, with access to very cool virtual FBI equipment. It's a very detailed and an amazing game!

The answer to the above heading I would say is "quite possibly". I will put forward an argument to encourage readers of this comment to ponder over it.
Firstly, I disagree with one of my fellow fans of the game who has commented on this page because I believe you do not need to be a fan of the TV series to enjoy it. In fact not knowing anything about the TV series adds to the excitement because you would see all events depicted in the game from the point of view of the character you play in the game - Craig Willmore. And Craig Willmore is an outsider. He was never in the TV series nor was any reference made to him. At the beginning of the game, he knows nothing at all about Mulder and Scully except for the fact that they are FBI agents just like he is.
This brings me on to the plot of the game - to find Fox Mulder and Dana Scully who have disappeared without trace. Despite the very simple set-up, the plot expands to include false suspects, questionable motives, supernatural events and a series of more questions than answers. This is in keeping with the tag-line of the TV series: "The truth is out there".
The game is entirely rendered in FMV (Full Motion Video). The digital photography is absolutely superb and fans of the TV series will definitely get the feeling that they are watching an actual episode of it. This style of gaming develops upon that of such classics as GABRIEL KNIGHT: THE BEAST WITHIN, PHANTASMAGORIA (and its even better sequel), RIPPER, BLACK DAHLIA and many others. THE X-FILES GAME is perhaps the only one of these games not to use still images or computer rendered images for its backgrounds. Due to this, every scene feels like a scene in a movie, fulfilling the original purpose of FMV gaming.
In this game, we get to find out much about Craig Willmore - his background, his beliefs, his style of investigation, his mannerisms and so on. Much of this is determined by the choices made by the player but in any case common themes occur that give clear information about the character. I won't give too much away but I'll say that those who focus on the game long enough could learn more about Craig Willmore in this one game than we learn about Fox Mulder during the entire franchise! For this reason, Craig Willmore seems like a real person with real strengths and weaknesses. It is easier to connect with him as we guide him through this roller-coaster of an adventure.
Aiding Agent Willmore in the investigation is Detective Mary Astadourian. Unlike Mulder and Scully, the relationship between Willmore and Astadourian is a very tense one (with the degree of tension guided by the choices the player makes), caused partly by the fact that one is an FBI agent and the other is a Seattle state cop. The tension between them ranges from distrust in each other to conflicting opinions about aspects of the case they are investigating. This draws the gamer into the game to an extent that only a top-notch suspenseful movie could match. For these reasons, it could be said with credibility that the characters of Willmore and Astadourian are far more interesting than those of Mulder and Scully.
The chemistry between the actors playing Agent Willmore and Detective Astadourian, Jordan Lee Williams and Paige Witte, is equally electrifying. Indeed it could be said that the chemistry between these two actors far surpasses that of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson (who played Mulder and Scully).
Fans of the TV series will be pleased to see David Duchnovny and Gillian Anderson reprising the roles they are famous for, although they do not feature much in the game. Other familiar faces from the TV series include AD Walter Skinner played by Mitch Pileggi, the cigarette smoking man played by William B Davis, along with Mulder and Scully's assistants (Frohike, Byers and Langly). All of these actors deliver superb performances.
But the best returning character from the TV series is X, played by Steven Williams. Those who have not seen the TV series are likely to be seriously freaked out when they see this guy for the first time. It is perhaps the best introduction of a character in any video game. And the actor's performance is amongst the best in the whole game.
However, the real kudos should go to Jordan Lee Williams and Paige Witte, whose portrayal of what are perhaps the most interesting characters created by The X-Files franchise is superb in every single respect. It's a real shame that a sequel wasn't produced and an even greater shame that the two actors in question did not move on to higher profile productions.
The game has the right mixture of tension, suspense, horror, science fiction, comedy and intrigue to make it a true masterpiece. In terms of length, it is the equivalent of a three or four-part episode. I seriously doubt many fans of the TV series could gain as much entertainment from a 3-part episode of the TV series than they could from this game.
But more importantly is the fact that the two strong leads in the game and the superb supporting cast (both returning characters from the TV series and the new characters) ensures the game stands as a true landmark in its own right.
The game is now long out of print, but can be easily purchased through online auctions and trading websites. It comes on 7 CDs, although I hope one day some company will take advantage of the DVD medium to re-release this game on a single disc!

This game is great as long as you don't rush through it. Even though you can beat it in about four hours, you have to take time to do some of the little unnecessary things to really like it. (i.e. Keeping Skinner, Shanks, and Cook informed on your investigations via e-mail)

I recently completed the X-Files game and I thought it was amazing. The story line was gripping once it got going and it really was just like an episode of the X-Files. The concept was well developed and there was plenty to do. The puzzles were challenging and good fun trying to work out. The guest appearances were cool. However I personally completed the game without ever finding The Smoking Man, I know he is meant to be in it as he is on the cast list and screen shots. If anyone knows where he is in the game please email me or if you need any help I'll be happy to help. Some people might find the controls annoying, but the hot keys help to find things. Certainly A+++ game for all.

X-Files Video Game is a welcome complement to Carter's Mythology for those who are fans of the series, but non-fans will probably not be converted. There are a few action scenes, but it's mostly puzzle-oriented, as is to be expected. The video game does hold true to the more paranoid and disturbing elements of the TV show, and you're treated to guest appearances by many of the supporting roles in the series. Unfortunately, Mulder and Scully's roles take a backseat, and you play a second-string facsimilie. It actually feels more like "X-Files the Next Generation." The plot is predictable. Though intuitive, the interface is reminiscent of old arcade live-action video games consisting of a gun or a joystick to moderately affect the action. One doesn't feel they are affecting the action of the story so much as just learning what's the right thing to do when. As the second attempt for the Carter franchise to vault into computer entertainment, it's a valiant effort. As computer entertainment in general, it is not revolutionary and barely satisfactory.

I've never seen a game before, which I could act in. The creators told, that it would be like inside the movie. So, it's true. The basic idea is excellent, the further improvement of this game style will be only artificial intelligence. The only obstacle, that doesn't allow the game to take 10 points is, that the plot of the game isn't as outperforming as in some episodes of "The X-Files". I mean, that it does not leave any questions about the mythology at the end -- just another fact of the alien existence. I hoped, that Carter could create something "outbeat".

I am not a fan of the x files but i do have a history of how the two main characters are, Dana Scully and Fox Mulder. It's an FMV Game that is hidden inside a point and click game but in my opinion, it's actually really good. The plot is engaging from beginning to end and you aren't actually agent Scully or agent Mulder, you play as Craig Willmore, an agent who is investigating into the disappearance of fox Mulder and Dana Sculley. The whole thing is a interesting science fiction movie that is packed in with some hilarious dialogue from the entire cast. My only problem is that you'll die a whole lot but dying in a game but it's worth sometimes just for the ending And well David and Gillan are not in very much.

This game is so much fun. It really captures the imagination of the show and let's an individual virtually enter the world of The X-Files from the 90s. The only drawback is that most systems will no longer run the program, so if you want to enjoy it, you'll have to dig out an old computer stashed in the back of your closet (if it'll still boot up, that is). 🖖🏻

FMV (Full Motion Video) games, in which include FMV during most of the game, aren't very popular among the Playstation, they were very popular in the Sega CD and 3DO days. When "The X-Files" was released for the Playstation, it gave gamers a view of the magic of FMV-based games, which hasn't been seen since the, now rare, Psychic Detective Playstation game, which was a remake of the 3DO version.
Fans of the X-Files will find this game to be a great opportunity to be a part of "The X-Files", and almost anyone will find the storyline, gameplay, controls, sound, and picture to be quite satisfactory.
David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are also in the game, so it will give fans of the X-Files a chance to see the two in an episode that cannot be viewed on cable TV.

I've never really been a fan of computer games but being a long time X Phile I thought I would give it a go and I was amazed. This game is excellently made and unbelievably addictive. Featuring appearance by David and Gillian and a wonderful performance by Jordan Lee Williams as Agent Craig Willmore, the agent investigating the disappearance of Agents Mulder and Scully. Once you start playing you wont stop until you solve it.

The X-Files game is great.The game has little to no animated graphics but with real people acting during the gameplay.The acting that the characters put in to this is great it is like watching a movie!The bad things about this game is that it is slow and there is not much action.But overall it is a fun game.

Question about disk 3 of 1998 x-files game

I noticed you had some posting on this game. I hope you can help me. I have the PC game. I have loaded all 7 disks onto my windows xp, media center edition computer. It loaded fine.
The cheat sheet I found on game spot web site is helpful. On disk 2, Skinner takes off to Washington DC and wants Chris to conduct a stakeout at the warehouse. The cheat sheet refers to a little boat at the warehouse on disk 3. This is after Skinner takes off for Washington DC and says that I am to go to the warehouse for a stakeout. However, I am supposed to find a boat and more evidence, and have been unable to find it. Do you have any help?
I have also enjoyed the game. My son got it for me, since I am an x files fan, back in 1999, and I am only now getting around to seriously playing it.

I can't believe I wasted $50 bucks on this stupid game. What was I thinking? X-Files: The Game is the worst game I have ever played. All you do is click for clues and YOU WIN!!! WHOOP-DEE-DOO! This game have 4 CDs of just that. The only real challege is to shoot at bad guys with your gun.
