Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we go down south to talk about Billy Bob Thornton! To do this, we bring in devoted Billy Bob fan, friend, writer, director, and producer Nicholas Gray of Uncompromised Creative.
We have a super-sized B-Side collection today: (deep breath) Homegrown, Daddy and Them, Waking Up in Reno, The Badge, Levity, Chrystal, and Jayne Mansfield’s Car.
Conor makes the observation that Thornton may be a leading man trapped in a character actor’s body, Nicholas marvels at the nuance of Jayne Mansfield’s Car, and I mention liking movies that start with an original sin of sorts. We talk about how Burt Reynolds helped Billy Bob break into the business, the long cultural legs of his film Sling Blade,...

Billy Bob Thornton has played some devilish characters, but never one as frightening and fascinating as Fargo’s Lorne Malvo. Malvo is a mysterious grim reaper of sorts who lives by a strict code of malevolence — one that has a way of rubbing off on the innocent souls around him. In the premiere of FX’s new series, which airs Tuesday at 10 p.m. Et, a chance encounter with pathetic pushover Lester Nygaard (Sherlock’s Martin Freeman) leads to some very bad things in the small town of Bemidji, Minn.

Brains of a Blonde: Thornton’s Unnecessary Return to the Director’s Chair
After his astonishingly strong 1996 directorial debut, Sling Blade, you’d be hard pressed to find another new director more highly anticipated than Billy Bob Thornton during that time period. After two viciously unsuccessful followups (a failed Cormac McCarthy adaptation, All the Pretty Horses, 2000, and a jarringly delayed family drama, Daddy and Them, made in 1999 and released on DVD in 2001), Thornton finally debuts a fourth feature, Jayne Mansfield’s Car, which continues his fascination with sprawling Southern family sagas where familial relations are strange and in-laws interminably spout second-tier Tennessee Williams tropes, and where an attempt at depicting culture clash really only plays out like misguided narrative clash. Sadly, this southern fried period piece is as headless as the corpse in the car it references, the tacky Mansfield car a garish metaphor for Thornton’s cinematic offering, touring...

Billy Bob Thornton’s first narrative directorial effort since 2001’s “Daddy and Them” certainly doesn’t lack for ambition, what with a dozen or so characters from three generations of two different families bumping heads (and other body parts) at a family funeral in the Deep South of the late 1960s. Despite the presence of a powerhouse cast, however, “Jayne Mansfield’s Car” suffers from a screenplay (by Thornton and Tom Epperson) that’s both too sprawling and too tidy; it’s one thing to explore the messiness of familial relationships and regret against the backdrop of the Vietnam War,...

Here’s the first clip from Billy Bob Thornton‘s upcoming Jayne Mansfield’s Car. Yep, an upcoming, ’cause the movie (finally) opens next month. As you probably remember, we’re talking about Thornton’s first directing job since 2001′s Daddy and Them, which definitely looks promising, and (let’s be honest) has an awesome cast on board. Head inside to take another look at Robert Duvall and John Hurt & let us know what you think! As usual, we will first remind you that Billy Bob Thornton directed the whole thing from a script he co-wrote with Tom Epperson, which is set in 1969 Alabama, and tells the story of...

Billy Bob Thornton is primarily known as an actor nowadays, but it would be foolish to forget about his contributions to the film world as a writer/director - after all, the guy is an Oscar winner. In 1996 Thornton earned nearly unanimous critical praise for his directorial debut, the Southern drama Sling Blade, for which he picked up both an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and a nomination for Best Actor. His filmmaker efforts since, however, have been rather few and far between, and he hasn't directed a feature since 2001's Daddy and Them. Now he's finally back in the director's chair, and from the look of the trailer for his new movie, Jayne Mansfield's Car (which was posted by Yahoo!, there are equal parts drama and comedy to be had. Based on an original screenplay by Thornton and Tom Epperson (with whom he also wrote Sam Raimi's...

Billy Bob Thornton is going back in time! The actor, director and cowriter for Jayne Mansfield's Car is traveling to Alabama in the late 1960s for his highly anticipated new film. The flick traces two sides of a family—one from Alabama and the other from England—whose paths come together after the death of their matriarch. With strong cultural backgrounds during an ever-changing time in American history, there's bound to be plenty of drama and clashes between the two groups. Just watch the trailer for proof! It will be 10 years since Thornton last wrote and directed a feature-length, fiction film, his last outing being 2001's Daddy and Them. Back in 1996, the...

Back in 1996 when Billy Bob Thornton directed his first feature, Sling Blade, I thought that he had made his mark and was going to become one of the big directors working in Hollywood. That never happened, though. After that he only directed the Cormac McCarthy adaptation All the Pretty Horses in 2000 and then Daddy and Them, a movie I don’t even remember existing, in 2001. I guess the guy just decided that he’d rather be an actor than a director. And that’s fine, but now that he’s getting a bit older it seems like the directing bug might have bit once again. Last year he directed both a Willie Nelson documentary called The King of Luck, which is currently looking for distribution deals, and a dramatic film called Jayne Mansfield’s Car, which just played Berlinale. And apparently he’s not stopping there, because Variety has news that Thornton and his writing partner Tom Epperson...

A decade or so ago, Billy Bob Thornton was juggling his acting gigs with a burgeoning career as a director, helming Sling Blade, All The Pretty Horses and Daddy And Them. He then seemed to retreat back to acting, but apparently these projects come in threes, since Thornton-as-director has just made the Willie Nelson documentary The King Of Luck and the drama Jayne Mansfield's Car, and is now talking about his next idea: a road movie based on personal experience, called And Then We Drove.Thornton says the story is "ethereal", and is about "a guy who's on a road trip and picks up this girl along the way, and what happens to them. It's about the question of life: 'What is this? Where do I fit in?'"Deep stuff, but most interest in the film this morning has been of a more prurient sort, since an unnamed Variety...

I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of Billy Bob Thornton, but you have to give him credit for being one of the most eccentric actors working in Hollywood today — aside from internet favorite Nicolas Cage. Variety reports that the actor is currently co-writing and plans on directing a road picture, And Then We Drove, which he describes as “ethereal.”
The title of the film is still under construction, as Thornton himself and his longtime writing buddy Tom Epperson are busy writing the script. Billy Bob Thornton.s directorial career got off to a white-hot start, launching in 1996 with the Oscar-winning Sling Blade and gracefully moving into a lyrical adaptation of Cormac McCarthy.s All the Pretty Horses four years later. And then? Well, not much. He wrote and starred in the 2001 dark comedy Daddy and Them, and recently made the festival rounds with a Willie Nelson documentary titled The King of Luck. But his feature-film aspirations were on hold. News emerging this morning, however, suggests that Thornton.s vacation from the director.s chair may be coming to a close. Sparse details about the project came to the surface last year when Billy Bob Thornton revealed that he would direct his first feature since the 2001 film Daddy and Them. Now we have details on the film titled Jayne Mansfield's Car, and a great line-up of actors to star in the new comedic drama. Deadline says Robert Duvall (Get Low), John Hurt (V for Vendetta), Kevin Bacon (X-Men: First Class), Robert Patrick (Walk the Line) and Ray Stevenson (Thor) in the story focusing on the culture clash of two families, from different continents, in 1969. Sounds like Flipped, but without the childhood romance. Thornton has hasn't much success on the big screen lately (his last film was the generic action thriller Faster with Dwayne Johnson), but apparently he's been busy with his music career. However, having the man behind Sling Blade return to the director's chair is quite an enticing ...

If you’re one of the seventeen people who sit around wondering when Billy Bob Thornton will direct another movie, you’re in luck. The Playlist reports he’s planning to direct Dwight Yoakam and Dennis Quaid in Jayne Mansfield’s Car, based on an original script by Thornton.
Billy Bob hasn’t directed a film in ten years, and it’s not really surprising, given that his last effort behind the camera was a “dark comedy” called Daddy And Them, which starred Thornton, Laura Dern and Diane Ladd and which no one saw. Since it’s not even Playing Instantly on Netflix (which an astounding number of terrible movies are), can one blame Thornton for spending these last ten years divorcing Angelina Jolie, focusing on his music, and taking paycheck roles like Mr. Woodcock?
Since Thornton has proven himself a marvelous actor in the past, I guess we could forgive him.

The South by Southwest Festival announced its closing night film will be the World Premiere of The King of Luck, a documentary about Willie Nelson that will be directed by Billy Bob Thornton. The film screens March 19. The fest will also show a work in progress screening of Paul Feig's Bridesmaids, which was cowritten by Kristen Wiig and produced by Judd Apatow. (Deadline was not a fan of the movie's first trailer.) Seeing Thornton back behind the camera is most intriguing. He hasn't directed a film since 2001's Daddy and Them, and before that helmed the underrated All the Pretty Horses. Bbt has spent as much time singing as he has turning in performances in films like Bad Santa, but I'm sure he's got another Sling Blade in him, so hopefully this signals the start of a trend with Thornton writing and directing features again. Billy Bob Thornton hasn’t directed a film since 2001′s Daddy And Them but, if you’re aware of the struggles he had making All The Pretty Horses the previous year, then you can understand why. But now Thornton is back in the director’s chair for Jayne Mansfield’S Car, from a script he co-wrote with Tom Epperson – a frequent collaborator who he also co-wrote One False Move and The Gift with. Thornton has previously stated that Mansfield’S Car is “a comedy drama, and it’s about human relationships. This one deals a lot with how different generations view war and also it examines the randomness of life and death.”

Quentin Tarantino's friend and longtime film editor, Sally Menke, has been found dead in Los Angeles at the age of 56. Menke went hiking with her dog in Beachwood Canyon on Monday, September 27, when the city was experiencing record heat waves, but failed to return home.

Sally Menke, an Oscar-nominated film editor who worked on every Quentin Tarantino movie, was found dead Tuesday along a Griffith Park trail where she went hiking during a record heat wave. She was 56.
Menke, the wife of Oscar-winning director Dean Parisot, edited every Tarantino pic from "Reservoir Dogs" (1992) to last year's "In¬glourious Basterds," which earned her an Oscar nomination. She also received a nom for "Pulp Fiction" (1994).
Investigators suspect she died of hyperthermia Monday, when downtown Los Angeles was on its way to a record high of 113, Los Angeles County coroner's Lt. Fred Corral said. An autopsy is planned for Wednesday.
A Friars Club Roast of Tarantino, scheduled for Friday in New York with Samuel L. Jackson as roast master, was postponed. The director met with executives, "and it was immediately decided, out of respect for the sad loss, to postpone the roast," a Friars spokesman told The Hollywood Reporter.
