Stars: Julian Sands, Charlotte Hope, Aoibhe O’Flanagan, Pippa Winslow, Philipp Christopher | Written and Directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen
What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see the one written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.
It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for the “Silicon Valley” Season 4 finale, Episode 10, “Server Error.”]
In a season filled with tech metaphors, none of them were as apt as an overheated garage server being lightly attended to with hand-operated fans. As Anton slowly broiled under the weight of unwieldy Melcher data, it was a fitting encapsulation of the monumental stress that “Silicon Valley” put on its main characters this year. The road to technological relevance has never been easy for these guys, but this season finale gave them a solution and a ticket out of the rut they’ve been in for the past few weeks.
It’s a solution that didn’t seem likely at the outset of this episode, as Dinesh looped videos of more Hooliphone explosions caught on surveillance cameras. The Pied Piper gang has been forced to face consequences in the past, but watching potential users in physical pain brought about by their actions seem to be a tipping point for...

When it comes to chasing your dreams, there’s a fine line between crazy and courageous, and the fast-moving, boom or bust world of Silicon Valley — satirized in HBO’s award-winning comedy of the same name — blurs the line into obscurity. Over three seasons, Richard Hendricks (Thomas Middleditch) and his friends have seen more extreme ups and downs while trying to monetize their landmark algorithm than most people experience in their lifetime. Entering Season 4, they’ve got a shot at evening things out and making good, stable money.
But is that enough? Is stability what these men, and Richard Hendricks, in particular, are really chasing? Would they be happy if they were millionaires, coasting through life, free from the pressures and thrills of the chase? That each character would likely answer differently gives you an idea of where “Silicon Valley” is headed in Season 4, but simply by posing the question,...

Screen Anarchy was the first to catch wind of Ju-On, Marebito and The Grudge director Shimizu Takashi’s latest, Little Nightmares. It has been a while since Ju-On, Marebito and The Grudge director Shimizu Takashi has managed to make much of an impact with international audiences but for those of us who remember the raw power and impact of his early work there is a continuing hope that he may yet have a little bit left in the tank. Will Little Nightmares be the film to vault Shimizu back on to the international horror A list? Realistically, probably not given how rooted in a specifically Japanese pop culture aesthetic quite a lot of this imagery seems but there's quite a lot here to like for fans. With a story line that reads something like the bastard child of The Ring and The Pied Piper, Little Nightmares...

The “Silicon Valley” writers are back to work and breaking stories for Season 4 – and one thing’s for certain: The Pied Piper crew will continue to experience both highs and lows.
“We feel the guys are outsiders,” executive producer Alec Berg told the audience Thursday at “Silicon Valley’s” San Diego Comic-Con panel. “As soon as they become the winners, the show gets less interesting.”
Added executive producer Mike Judge: “It’s more fun to watch these guys be uncomfortable and fail and be humiliated. They’re funnier that way. If they become successful and live happily ever after it will be less fun to watch.”
That doesn’t mean the crew won’t continue to occasionally experience victories. “[The show] does a good job of having plausible triumphs,” said Zach Woods (who plays Jared).

A review of tonight's Silicon Valley coming up just as soon as I tell you I'm a pescepescetarian... There was a brief moment in "Bachman's Earning's Over-Ride" where I made like Chandler on Friends and said, "This is the episode of Silicon Valley where there's some kind of misunderstanding." This was right as Richard was starting to yell at Monica because he assumed she was the one who sold her stock, but that mix-up got cleared up instantly, leading to the far more interesting meat of the episode: would Richard ruin Erlich's career prospects in order to protect Pied Piper's reputation? For once, this wasn't the guys dealing with some outside agitator — especially since the episode also detailed the end of Hooli's feud with the company, and the end (for now, but not forever, I'm guessing) of Gavin's role as Silicon Valley supervillain. Instead, the conflict was entirely internal, which made it both tenser and funnier (especially since Erlich and Richard's big fight took place while Erlich was still wearing the unicorn costume) than those times when Richard is spiraling due to forces beyond his control. It also continued this season's ever-so-slight, but satisfying, shift into more pathos and a tiny bit more maturity from Erlich. Having the most humiliated guy in the Valley functioning as your corporate spokesman probably seems like a bad idea, but on the whole it's a task more suited to Erlich's skillset, as few people on the show are better at spinning and pushing a line of Bs than him. And because the initial misunderstanding got dealt with almost immediately, that set us up for the cruel but funny one in the episode's payoff, as Erlich discovers that Cj had no idea about his travails, and the ugliness she was referring to was the Pied Piper baseball jacket that Jared commissioned. The reintroduction of Russ Hanneman, and the reminder that Richard made a terrible deal with him that Laurie now owns the rights to, also suggests interesting new sources of conflict now that Pied Piper seems on the verge of genuine, sustainable success. Obviously, there's still the threat of Gavin and Jack Barker forming a supervillain team-up once their private planes meet each other in Jackson Hole (because each of them is too spoiled and egotistical to just fly on the other guy's plane), but we are hopefully past the stage where Pied Piper was on the verge of ruin by the second act of every episode. There can, and will, be problems ahead, but these recent episodes suggest Silicon Valley is finding other ways to tell stories that still leave it feeling like itself. Some other thoughts: * Speaking of breaking from pattern, there's a part of that keeps hoping for Dinesh to significantly get the better of Gilfoyle in one of their arguments, but that part is inevitably shouted down by how goddamn funny Martin Starr and Kumail Nanjiani are at playing, respectively, Gilfoyle's smugness in victory and Dinesh's exasperation in defeat. * Also, the run of insults about the jacket rivaled the ones about Dinesh's gold chain (which he fairly pointed out was much less egregious than the jacket). I particularly liked Gilfoyle suggesting, "If my mother was naked and dead in the street, I would not cover her body with that." * At karaoke, Dinesh sings "The Pied Piper" by Crispian St. Peters. * Gavin + animals = funny. Always. * Richard's metaphor for how he believes Monica screwed them over suggests a particularly dark incident in his past, or just his usual crippling neuroses. * Because they are now corporate siblings with HitFix, I chuckled especially much at the "Even Uproxx?"/"Yes, even them" Erlich/Richard exchange. * Note how all the players at Richard's table immediately started demanding their own version of Erlich's fish dish once they saw someone eating something new. Trend followers! What did everybody else think?...

There’s a certain joy to be felt when discovering a new voice in film. Taking the risk to sit down in and watch a director’s first feature, witnessing how they grapple and contend with cinema. Each year, there are great debuts, to be sure, but in 2015, it seemed to me to be unusually strong for first-time filmmakers (not a few films listed here are on my overall best of the year list as well).
A few notes regarding the eligibility: the majority of these films had a USA theatrical release date in 2015, but in the spirit of including more foreign films – some of which have yet to find a distributor in North America – I have also included several films which only had festival release dates in 2015, or only had theatrical releases in their country of origin. The question of which films are eligible seems to be an arbitrary line,...

Mike Judge’s critically acclaimed tech comedy Silicon Valley is back for a second season. Season one ended with the success in Silicon Valley‘s “live-in start up business incubator,” as Pied Piper triumphed at TechCrunch Disrupt once Richard Hendricks (Thomas Middleditch) wrote some inspired last minute code to help their compression algorithm outperform the rival Nucleus software owned by the company Hendricks and Donald “Jared” Dunn used to work for.
HBO has now released a trailer for the new season. This season begins with the CEO of Hooli and the Nucleus project, Gavin Belson (Matt Ross), preparing his company for a showdown with Hendricks, an ex-employee. The Pied Piper crew are also shown tooling up for their business battle. Actor Chris Diamantopoulos (Arrested Development‘s Marky Bark) plays an over-tanned, designer clothes wearing, sports car driving, investor who hopes to “Get Pied Piper out there” through “Brand awareness” and “Synergy,...

The Pied Piper uncovered some new secrets—just not the ones we were hoping for. Though it seemed like the introduction of Hartley Rathaway (Andy Mientus) during Tuesday’s episode of The Flash would lead to Harrison Wells’ (Tom Cavanagh) big yellow secret coming out, the Pied Piper only outed Wells’ decision to launch the particle accelerator despite knowing there was a chance it could explode. The Flash is about to meet one of Harrison Wells’ prodigal sons: the super-intelligent Hartley Rathaway, aka the Pied Piper!
On tonight’s all-new episode, titled “The Sound and the Fury,” Hartley (played by Smash’s Andy Mientus) returns to Central City to seek revenge on his former mentor (Tom Cavanagh) after being affected by the particle accelerator explosion. A manipulator of sound waves, he just may be Dr. Wells and Barry Allen’s (Grant Gustin) toughest match yet.
Translating the Pied Piper from comic form to the small screen could have been a Herculean task, but emphasis on realism helped hone in on the character’s true essence.

We have good news for CW fans. The popular shows are on their way back to new episodes starting on the week of January 26th. Yes, that means we can finally start seeing how the rest of the seasons will play out. This includes new episodes of The Originals, which CW has not promoted as heavily as they have done in the past. Normally they remind their fans with a heavy hand and it appears this year they chose to go easy. Here is the currently schedule for the week.

Smash actor Andy Mientus will play the openly gay 'Hartley Rathaway'/'Pied Piper' on the 11th and 12th episode of CW's The Flash television series. In the comics the character was introuduced as a villain, but later became an ally. Perhaps, it will play out the same way in the show. Perhaps, not. TV Line described 'Pied Piper' as "a bona fide genius who used to work at S.T.A.R. Labs until a falling out with his mentor, Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh). The particle accelerator robbed Hartley of his hearing, but inspired him to create a series of sonic weapons that he uses in an effort to punish Wells by destroying his new protege: The Flash." The first image below of 'Pied Piper' is from Yvr Shoots. Click here to see the rest of their photographs from today's shoot. #TheFlash meets "The Villian" aka - Hartley Rathaway aka...

Ichabod has a breakthrough in this week’s Sleepy Hollow, and it just may mean the end of all of us.
No, I’m not talking about his dabbling in yoga nor his discovery of online gaming — though we will discuss those in detail in a moment. I mean his realization that he loves Henry, despite all of the malarkey the Cranes’ bent-on-evil son has caused.
When my dad decided not to go nuclear the time I somehow hooked the wheel well of my Honda onto the bumper of his Monte Carlo? That was love. When Ichabod weakens, however imperceptibly,...

After Reyes effectively put an end to all occult shenanigans last week, Jenny and Crane are out of the police sidekick game, and Captain Irving is wrestling with the truth bomb that his lawyer is the Horseman of War. On the plus side, Abbie made a new friend in Hawley, aka Southern Gentleman Aquaman. What adventures await our plucky heroes this week? Will Katrina finally remember witches are good at things like Witchcraft and ground her wayward son? Probably not, but one can hope. ******** In the dead of night, in a spooky house, a little girl is lulled outside by equally spooky music. Props to whoever keeps trying to make this Single colonial house look different enough to be at least three different homes. The little girl disappears into the night, escorted by a dude playing the flute, so I’m sure she is 100% okay and not headed towards imminent death.

The CW's "The Flash" is adding some more villains to its ranks.
Andy Mientus ("Smash," "Chasing Life") has joined the cast as Hartley Rathaway, a former Star Labs tech who later becomes the sonic weapon-slinging villain The Pied Piper. In both the comics and the show the character is openly gay. Mientus will appear in the show's eleventh and twelfth episodes.
Next, "Alias" regular Victor Garber is slated to play the DC Comics character and arrogant nuclear physicist Dr. Martin Stein in the series. The character discovers the particle accelerator accident fused him with the impulsive Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell) and he races to find a way to separate the two. Together they become 'Firestorm'.
Meanwhile its progenitor "Arrow" returned to The CW on Wednesday night to solid ratings with 2.8 million viewers and a 1.0 in Live+Same Day results. The third season premiere jumped 2% in total viewers and 11% in the...

While we still don’t know who will play him, TV Line has released a scoop confirming that Hartley Rathaway, the DC Comics villain known as the Pied Piper, is headed to The Flash. The character will make his debut midway through the series’ upcoming freshman season and will have ties to Dr. Wells, who will be played by Tom Cavanagh.
Just like in the comics, Hartley will lose his hearing and join the Rogues, a team of Flash villains that includes already-cast members Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell), Captain Boomerang (Nick Tarabay), Weather Wizard (Chad Rook) and Plastique (Kelly Frye). The New 52 relaunch has re-imagined the character as a bit of an anti-hero and “reformed vigilante,” so there’s a chance that his loyalties will shift with time.

TV Line reveals that another member of The Flash's rogues gallery will be seen in season one of The CW series. There's no word on which episode he'll appear in or who will play him, but it sounds like the character will have an entire instalment of the Arrow spin-off devoted to his introduction. "In addition to the likes of Captains Cold and Boomerang, at midseason we will also meet Hartley, a onetime mentee of Dr. Wells’ who lost his hearing in an accident and now is out to wreak havoc with an invention of his own. (Of course, you may know Hartley — who happens to be gay — as the Pied Piper.)" The Pied Piper stands out as being one of DC Comics' first openly gay characters - as you can see from the panel below - and his powers allow him to cause vibrational damage and hypnotize people.

His comedy is certainly not meant for kids, but Russell Brand is breaking from the norm to write a children's book.
Though it's not clear yet if he's playing a practical joke, the British funny man's video message on Tuesday (April 1) shared details of his project.
If it is a prank, it's well constructed as the ex-husband of Katy Perry explained that Chris Riddell is doing the drawings for the book, even showing some of the characters already drawn.
According to Russell, "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" is the first in the series called "Russell Brand's Trickster Tales," where "I'd do interpretations of fairy stories and folk tales believing them to be the code to unlocking aspects of our consciousness and to affect and impact the way that we see the world." Check out the video below, in which Russell reads from the first in the series.

No, it's not a young Dakota Fanning. The girl who recreated the iconic Les Miserables poster for the Oscar-nominated movie is Isabelle Allen, who plays Cosette, the forlorn daughter of Fantine (Anne Hathaway). As Cosette grows older, Amanda Seyfried takes over in the role.
Les Miserables is Allen's first movie, but it probably won't be her last. "She’s incredible. Totally pure and unspoilt. She is the movie," costar Hugh Jackman told the Daily Mail.
The British actress, 10, was discovered while playing the male lead in a school play last year. Jeremy Taylor of the National Youth Music Theatre spotted Allen in her role as a lame boy in 'The Pied Piper Of Hamelin' and got her an audition with Les Miserables casting agents.
She's also a team player, tweeting congrats to her costars for their Golden Globes wins Sunday night:
Yay, well done to @realhughjackman, #AnneHathaway & @lesmisofficial...

London, May 25: The Pied Piper of Hamelin could be wanted again as the German town has become infested with rats, with a growing legion of the rodents managing to knock out one of the town's fountains.
Thomas Wahmes, spokesman for the town council said that rats had "chewed through electricity cables" operating the fountain, which stands outside the German town's railway station.
The rats' fondness for gnawing.

Max Landis has been brought aboard the currently-in-development Pied Piper , based on the German legend, Variety reports. Originating in 16th century Europe, "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" tells the tale of a musician who is hired by the village of Hamelin to remove the city's rats, leading them out by playing his magic flute. Upon completion of his task, the city refuses to pay and, as revenge, the piper returns to Hamelin once more, using his musical power to take away all the children. Little is known about the re-imagining of the tale, save that it is being developed as a fantasy for 20th Century Fox, likely akin to recent fairytale updates like Red Riding Hood or, upcoming, Snow White and the Huntsman . The story has been brought to the screen in the past...

One thing that I'm constantly shocked and astounded by are some of the morbid and morally questionable fairy tales, fables, nursery rhymes and legends that children hear at such a young age. Stories like Hansel and Gretel, Three Blind Mice or even the Dr. Seuss story of The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins are surprisingly dark and grim. But now as an adult, I love when someone has the creativity to take these twisted stories and make them even more vicious. Such is the case with THR's report on an adaptation of the comic book The Piper, a twisted, contemporary take on the classic legend of The Pied Piper of Hamelin. The comic centers on a bullied high school band student who unintentionally channels the spirit of the mysterious Pied Piper and triggers terrifying consequences of his actions beyond his control. Sounds like Carrie meets Bully, and I'm just fine with...
