Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, frontman of the pioneering reggae outfit Toots and the Maytals and one of the greatest voices in popular music, died Friday evening at the age of 77.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts to announce that Frederick Nathaniel ‘Toots’ Hibbert passed away peacefully tonight, surrounded by his family at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica,” his family said in a statement. “The family and his management team would like to thank the medical teams and professionals for their care and diligence, and ask...

For those of us in our third (or fourth) decade, we cannot help but think about Alex Winter as the actor who played Bill S. Preston, Esq., the curly haired co-protagonist, who along with Keanu Reeve's Ted "Theodore" Logan, traveled through time to learn about historically important figures in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. That was then, this is now. After a brief foray into directing fiction with the delightfully weird prosthetic-effects sideshow Freaked in 1993 and the quietly (but positively) received 1999 thriller Fever, he has been making documentaries that delve into the legal, moral and ethical morass that technology has a way of remaking our world. And in spite of reuniting with his excellent pal, Keanu Reeves provides voice-over for his latest film, the goofball feel-good...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Fox’s Animation Domination lineup debuted last night with four season premieres. The Simpsons, The Cleveland Show, Family Guy, and American Dad all unleashed cartoon chaos. But were they any good? Let’s go show by show…
The Simpsons’ “The Falcon and the D’ohman”
After 22 seasons of The Simpsons, you’d think that even the most dedicated fans would be tired of Bart and Co. Not I, my friends. Tonight’s episode gave me plenty of reasons to watch the show’s 23rd season. In the season premiere, Wayne, a former U.S. secret agent turned detached security guard...

While we all know what happened to Keanu Reeves after the "Bill & Ted's" movies, what happened to Bill S. Preston, Esq (Alex Winter)? Well, he soldiered on behind the camera, helming a couple of features--the thriller "Fever" and the comedy "Freaked"--and since staked out a career mostly as a director of television shows and commercials. But as with nearly everyone in Hollywood, Winter has a had a long gestating project that's he been trying to get off the ground and it looks like it finally will, albeit in a different shape than he intended. Remember Napster? If you're too…...

“The Gate” was always one of my favorite horror films when I was younger. Yes, it can be said that it's geared towards children, but honestly, it's an intense, scary little flick. A lot of people groan at the very thought of a PG-13 rated horror flick, but really-there are different sub-genres of horror...
Not every film has to be a flat-out gorefest. It is possible to present a terrifying experience without needed to overload the dialog with F-Bombs, and gratuitous violence and nudity. A recent example of this would be the 2010 film “The Last Exorcism”. Although some will disagree with that no doubt. That is what makes us all fans. Different tastes for different people.
As a child, I'll admit to being terrified to the point of shaking by this film. In particular, the scene when a man who was buried alive in one of the walls of the house during it's construction,...

When Russell Tovey’s buddy Matthew Cain went to see Kele in concert, he found it to be an amazing show. But he also noticed how decidedly middle class the audience was. What follows is an interesting discussion on the impact of politics and socioeconomics on popular culture.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows crushed the competition at the box office this weekend, raking in $125.1 million, making it the sixth biggest opening in history. But what was truly stunning is that it raked in $330 million worldwide.
A new poll shows that the majority of Australians back marriage equality. Well, the majority of Australians who aren’t members of government back marriage quality.
ABC says that the rumors that Teri Hatcher and Felicity Huffman are quitting Desperate Housewives are not true. Which is a shame, because then Bob, Lee, Andrew and the rest of the gays might get some screentime.

The Matrix star says he would like to revive the San Dimas slacker duo. But, at his age, is this really a most excellent idea?
Some characters should never be allowed to grow old. In the last five years we've seen pensioner Indiana Jones and 60-something Rocky and Rambos hit the big screen, as their creators attempted to squeeze one last smidgen of excitement out of once-loved figures. Now, according to a new interview with MTV News, Keanu Reeves is mulling the idea of bringing one of his own best-known creations back to cinemas.
Fortunately for us all, that doesn't mean a fourth Matrix movie, nor – more disappointingly – a sequel to Point Break, Kathryn Bigelow's much-loved 1991 surfer-crim action romp. Nope, Reeves has his eyes set on a rather more bodacious prize: a third movie about Bill and Ted, those most excellent dudes from San Dimas, California, who appeared in...

Elton John, Beyoncé, Madonna seem like strong possibilities.

The talent lineup for Sunday's Grammy Awards keeps growing, but one big question mark remains. Last week, show producer Ken Ehrlich briefly mentioned that both Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift will not be performing alone on the show.
He didn't spill the beans on just whom the performers will share the stage with, but since Swift has duetted with everyone from T-Pain to Miley Cyrus at awards shows in the past, Gaga is the wild card, and speculation has been rampant in the days leading up to the show. So who might it be?

One remake we're looking forward to that has a really good chance of being good is Alex Winter's redux of The Gate in 3D. If Winter can capture just a fraction of the original film's charm then we're pretty damned golden. Some concept art snuck online today along with a boat load of details about the film.
Winter will be working from a script penned by himself and Kerric Macdonald. Charlotte Huggins (Journey to the Center of the Earth) and Andras Hamori are producing. The legendary H.R. Giger will be designing the creatures
Synopsis
When best friends Miles and Terry discover a mysterious crystalline rock in Miles's back yard, they quickly dig up the lawn in search of more. Instead, they unearth the Gate—the opening to an underground chamber containing terrifying evil.
The teenagers soon realize the horror they have unleashed, as one dire event follows another. With supernatural fiends invading suburbia,...

Update: At a midnight screening of Freaked at the New Beverly in Los Angeles, Winter confirmed he is currently attached to The Gate 3D redo and is now in pre-production! There's a new director on board the remake of The Gate and it's a perfect fit. According to Production Weekly, Alex Winter ( Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure , and, Bogus Journey ) is tackling the redo of the hellish 1987 creature feature. Furthermore, he's doing it in 3-D. Winter's been juggling an acting, writing and directing career for years since his "Bill" days. In '93 he helmed the FX-heavy comedy Freaked (a fave of mine) and Fever in '99. Recently he's been directing episodes of Ben 10 for the Cartoon Network. Winter's sensibilities seem ideal for The Gate 's tale of...

What the hell is this? Pun definitely intended. According to the Twitter for the very unreliable Production Weekly (via SlashFilm), the 1987 creature feature The Gate is being remade. Great, another remake we can forget about, right? Well, according to Pw, Alex Winter is directing this in 3D - the very same Alex Winter that starred as Bill S. Preston, Esq. in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Now you might start to understand why I'm wondering what this is? Believe it or not, Winters has actually directed a few things before this, including a thriller called Fever from 1999 and a few of the Ben 10 movies on the Cartoon Network. The Gate, directed by Hungarian filmmaker Tibor Takács and starring Stephen Dorff, is about three kids who accidentally release a horde of nasty, pint-sized demons from a hole in their backyard. I guess you could say it's kind of a ...

Now this is some pretty damn cool news. Production Weekly reported today that Alex Winter (Freaked, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure) is now attached to direct the remake of Tibor Takács’ classic 1987 kids-in-peril movie, The Gate.
Freaked was Winter’s directing debut, followed up a few years later by the far more subtle Fever with Henry Thomas. Outside of Bill & Ted, he’s best known for his badass 90’s MTV show “The Idiot Box”, which really needs to find a DVD release someday.
Pw says that there’s a good chance the remake will be in 3D, which is cool news, especially since we first mentioned the possibility back in 2007. Keep it here for Gate updates as more details are revealed!

Napster founder Shawn Fanning, whose file-sharing software pitted him as a populist David doing battle with the Goliaths of the music industry, has found a champion in MTV. The cable network has hired filmmaker Alex Winter (Fever) to write and direct a small-screen biopic for MTV Original Movies that will dramatize Fanning's life. As a teenager, he created a software program in his college dorm room that led to an online music revolution and his own booming Internet company, only to become the target of the music industry's legal wrath. The deal with MTV gives the network exclusive rights to Fanning's life story. The Napster founder and former chief technology officer is collaborating with Winter on the screenplay, and he also plans to executive produce the telepic along with its soundtrack, which will be released through his forthcoming, yet-unnamed record label, sources said.
