July 1st is Canada Day, and a few of our friends from north of the border have taken to YouTube to show pride for their native land. Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield has released a folk song about Canadian culture, while the Canucks over at Epic Meal Time have contributed a huge, poutine-filled monstrosity dedicated to their home country. Hadfield, who is best known for his space-borne cover of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" (which has since been removed from YouTube as part of a legal agreement), has kept himself plugged into the Internet even after returning to Earth. Hadfield is now retired, which gives him plenty of time to team up with his brother Dave and record a song about Hockey Night In Canada, camping, strongly-pronounced R's, and everything else that makes Canada Canada. For Epic Meal Time, a Canada Day celebration has become a yearly tradition, and 2014 is no different.

Thanks to True Detective, Dallas Buyers Club and a handful of other brilliant projects, Matthew McConaughey has spent the past few years transforming himself into one of Hollywood.s most celebrated leading men. Gone are leading roles in forgettable projects like Fool.s Gold. In are brilliant turns in things like The Wolf Of Wall Street. It.s been a hell of a run, but even so, there are still many who prefer to remember the Texan by his beloved early Dazed And Confused catch phrase "Alright, Alright, Alright." Luckily, that.s okay with McConaughey himself. He belted it out during his Oscar speech, and he.ll probably still be saying it decades from now, which is pretty impressive considering it was originally an ad-libbed screw-up. Back in 2011, McConaughey told the origin story of the phrase to Canadian television personality and new Hockey Night In Canada host George Stroumboulopoulos. And...

Toronto -- Time for revolutionary change in the way Canadians watch TV hockey, right? No thanks, I'm happy the way things are, Don Cherry, Canada's top NHL pundit told Rogers Communications on Saturday night after the media giant earlier this week paid $4.9 billion for the national broadcast and multimedia rights to NHL hockey over 12 years from the 2014-15 season. "I know I'm good. I didn’t fall off the turnip truck. I know everybody watches," Cherry said during his popular Coach's Corner segment on the CBC's Hockey Night in Canada broadcast. The National Hockey League playoffs are back!
Now, this could be very bad news for people who don't enjoy hearing the same old Gary Glitter riff belched through the loudspeakers of every NHL event ever, or people who loathe watching Nickelback besmirch Hockey Night In Canada broadcasts with that unfortunate cover of Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)," but the return of the playoffs — this year featuring four Canadian teams: the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators and Vancouver Canucks — needn't be a complete tragedy for music lovers.
The passionate emotions and the questionable "beards" that seem to come hand in hand with the playoffs have become genuine sources of inspiration to all sorts of artists from the most cutting edge of indie stars to the biggest of stadium acts.
Here are 12 of our favourite hockey songs — by everyone from Stompin' Tom and Tragically Hip to Kathleen Edwards...

Toronto – The CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada has booted on-air analyst Mike Milbury from its Saturday night broadcast after he was charged with allegedly assaulting a 12 year-old boy who played against his son in a pee wee hockey game in Massachusetts. "CBC Sports spoke with Mike late this afternoon. After a good discussion, we both decided that he won't be part of Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts while he focuses on his personal situation,” a CBC spokesman said Friday in a statement on the CBC.ca website. It's not all Americana here at TVOvermind. Yours truly hails from Canada – Toronto to be exact – so when we got an invitation to attend CBC's 2010 Upfront presentation, one of our contributing writers was off and running to the red carpet. Sarah tells me that she had a great time speaking with some of the stars and snapping photos. We've pulled together some red carpet pics and snippets from her interviews below. I also suspect she made an enemy out of figure skater Kurt Browning, but I'm hoping he forgets all about that.

The Vancouver Canucks have a rift with the CBC and might not make players available to speak after Saturdays' game during Hockey Day.
The Canucks will face the Toronto Maple Leafs, but an off-the-ice battle is brewing with Ron MacLean and the CBC.
The team didn't make players available last Saturday for post game interviews to the CBC, upset over MacLean's one-sided summation of the Alex Burrows-Stephane Auger affair.
MacLean ranted about the affair January 16 on Hockey Night in Canada and infuriated the Canucks and coach Alain Vigneault.

TORONTO -- The Canadian Broadcasting Corp., Canada's public broadcaster, on Thursday rejoined the battle for domestic TV audience share by doubling the number of homegrown dramas and comedies it will schedule against popular U.S. network series on rival Canadian networks. Kicking off the Canadian Upfronts for domestic media buyers, the CBC unveiled a fall 2005 lineup of new "high impact" Canadian dramas that include biopics about country sensation Shania Twain and Walter Gretzky, the father of hockey great Wayne Gretzky, and Canada-Russia '72, a dramatization of the historic 1972 hockey series between Canada and Russia. The CBC is also assuming that the National Hockey League will end its current labor dispute by penciling in Hockey Night in Canada telecasts for Saturday nights. "We operate in the most fiercely competitive media environment in the world. To survive, we have to build revenues and relevance, and that means building audiences," Richard Stursberg, the newly installed executive vp of CBC Television, told reporters in Toronto.
TORONTO -- Fifty jobs at the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. were put on ice when NHL team owners officially pulled the plug Wednesday on league play this season. The CBC said in a statement that for just the third time in its 50-year history, Hockey Night in Canada, a national institution on Saturday nights, would not go to air from Oct. 16. Nancy Lee, executive director of CBC TV Network Sports, said the NHL lockout will mean 50 employees will lose their jobs, including 36 people who work at CBC Sports. Freelancers that contribute to CBC hockey broadcasts also will be affected.

TORONTO -- The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. has unveiled a fall 2003-04 TV season that relies mostly on returning Canadian series and is virtually devoid of American programming. The public broadcaster will continue to air The Simpsons at 5 p.m. on weekdays to retain young viewers, and The Wonderful World of Disney will also continue to air on Sunday nights, even though ABC will air the long-running series on Saturday nights beginning in September. The CBC was precluded from moving the Disney show to Saturday night as it airs its popular Hockey Night in Canada on that night. The CBC virtually airs no other U.S. series, after it "Canadianized" its schedule a few years ago to fulfill its mandate as a public broadcaster.

TORONTO -- Telling the popular Hockey Night in Canada commentator to stick to hockey, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. has rebuked Don Cherry for making comments in favor of the war against Iraq on Jim Rome's syndicated radio program Monday. "Don was speaking for himself, not for the CBC," Harold Redekopp, executive vp of CBC Television, said in a statement Tuesday. "We disagree with and dissociate ourselves from his comments, which we consider to be inappropriate and uninformed." The admonishment from the public broadcaster came after Cherry, appearing on Rome's California-based radio show, lashed out at French-Canadians who booed the U.S. national anthem before a hockey game in Montreal last week.
