A teacher and former student of the great BRADBURY
erobert51 April 2005
I too remember seeing this movie in my 7th grade Literature class and when I decided to become a teacher and it was part of our curriculum, I was thrilled to experience it again. It is a great story for children to learn Science Ficton from as well as do a compare contrast piece between the book and the movie, not to mention the lessons of treating others with respect and kindness.

As I sit here and look at my South Central, Los Angeles Students gazing eagerly into the television screen as the fill out their Venn Diagrams, I realize some stories are timeless, and ALL SUMMER IN A DAY is one of them.

Also: enjoy Keith Coogan in a bratty role preceding his performances in such hits as Adventures in Babysitting and Toy Soldiers

A difficult, challenging movie, more for adults
Kojacque25 April 1999
I clearly remember watching this on PBS when I was a boy, and being horribly depressed by it. It's a challenging little story (_very_ "Bradburian") more about the cruelty of which children are capable than life on another planet (where it takes place). Thoroughly top-notch.

Effectively poignant story
deadkerouac28 November 1999
"All Summer in a Day" faithfully follows Ray Bradbury's short story. I saw this for the first time in elementary school, and it made me sad. It's a great short film with beautiful visuals. The film is at its best when the kids walk out into the sunlight for the very first time.

Excellent, excellent film

I saw this movie when I was little and I have never, ever forgotten it. I agree with one commentee on the fact that the scene after the rain stops is quite dramatic. I remember crying, and actually feeling the deep sadness, anger, and unfairness as if I were the girl myself. Why can't they show this film on tv anymore? I can't even buy this film online. I just absolutely loved Wonderworks productions, and this was probably the best. It was as good as reading the story, and that hardly ever happens.

honest, effective work of art

i remember watching this in 1982 when i was ten, and it was the first film to make me cry. i felt so sorry for margot and the cruelty she endured. Not to be mushy, but I was deeply touched and inspired by this film to treat people with blinding kindness. Wonderful writing, and brilliantly acted by the kids. In my memory forever.

Life changing and beautiful
ewyn12 September 2004
My dad copied this film off the TV for me when I was too young to even watch it. It waited for me on a tape of other TV movies like "The Boy Who Loved Trolls" for years until I was old enough to understand it. Even then it touched me deeply at the power in peoples actions. The sadness and beauty of it all was so intense, even at that young age, that it became a part of me to this day. I still watch that tape every year and share it with those closest to me. They tell me it explains why I developed the way I did.

Some films go beyond film-making to a point of changing the way we see the world. This film taught me the power of melencholy, loss, and most importantly, how alone we all are in our closets. I would recommend this film to everyone and anyone and remind them to pay careful attention to the message in the story, not necessarily the sci-fi or technical aspects.

Found this movie after years !!!

I remember seeing this movie as a kid, it struck me hard enough that I actually have been trying to find it for ages. The plot as I remember was a group of kids that live on this constantly raining, constantly gloomy planet and the sun only comes out once ever few decades or so, everyone is looking forward to it but because of someones cruelty the main character misses her chance to play in the sun, sad ending. Some people have said this movie is alluding to Vancouver itself, seeing as how its rainy, dark and gloomy here 8 months out of the year, I think I can see that comparison but I don't know if Bradbury meant that or not. I want to to thank Lupin for finding the link on IMDb, thanks IMDb for having the best movie DB out there.

my first childhood memory is of this movie
veelove7826 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
i remember watching a movie on HBO about this planet where it always rained. they would have silly classes on how to apply sun screen like we used to have fire drills in school and never had a fire. there was a girl who lived on this planet that was from a planet that had a sun. everyone shunned her because she was different. no one would believe her when she told them about the sun. one day this mean little boy locked her in a closet. and, during the time she was locked in, the sun came out and the rain stopped. and, all she got to experience of it was tracing with her finger the bit of sunlight that came in through the slim crack between the closet door and the cement floor. i still remember the image of her pointer finger slowly and lovingly tracing that sunny thin line on the floor. and, that was the first time my heart was ever broken.

in college somehow this story came up, and the person i was telling it to had read the book that the movie was based on. she told me how it ended. apparently, that one hour of sunshine was enough to grow bunches of sunflowers and wildflowers. the children moved by their time in the sun changed their minds about this girl. they now knew she was not a liar. and, they felt bad that they had hurt and isolated her. the boy who locked her in the closet comes up with an idea to make it up to her. the next morning. she is sitting at her desk. and, one by one all of the children go by her desk and place a flower they picked for her on her desk. at the end, her desk was buried in beautiful flowers. and, she was so happy to finally be accepted. and, that was the end of the story.

years after college, i went out to dinner with my father. and something reminded me of the story, so i told my dad about it all and how it affected me. and, my dad already knew the story. he tells me how i was alone in the living room sitting in my baby walker watching television and he was in the kitchen. and, all of a sudden i burst into loud, hysterical sobs. my dad comes running to find out what is wrong. and, all i keep wailing is, "they wouldn't let her see the sun! they wouldn't let her see the sun!" finally i calmed down enough to tell my dad what i had seen in the movie. he was amazed that i was so affected by it and that i still remembered watching it. it is funny, cause i remember the sadness i felt at watching the movie because i experience the sadness again as i remember. but i had no memory of having a fit over it or alarming my dad or discussing it with my dad.

so, i asked him how he was able to calm me down and help me deal with it. and he told me that he simply told me that it wasn't real. it was just a story. and, that it was nothing to cry about.

i opened my mouth to respond. and, i closed again without saying a word. and, i smiled. it touched me that my serious not very patient with children father had taken the time to understand me and my tears and had taken the time to comfort me. so, i smiled.

and, as i drove home after dropping of my father, i sighed. and, i whispered, "daddy, children really do get locked in closets. what about them?" and, i quietly wept during the whole drive home. and, it rained.

OK Bradbury Adaptation
Pinback-423 October 2000
I didn't know this movie was based on a short story by Ray Bradbury until a couple of years later when I read the story. But that's not why I remember this film. I saw it in my 6th grade reading class. It's about a group of kids who live on Venus where it rains all the time. The sun comes out only once for an hour every seven years. I won't say any more about what happens, but if you've seen it, you know how it ends. When the end credits started rolling, everyone in the classroom started laughing. I wondered why until I looked over and saw one girl crying. I then laughed too. It was hilarious. The entire class was laughing at her. The girl responded by giving everyone the finger. We had a substitute teacher that day, and the poor guy didn't know what to do, so he went next door and told the teacher there what was going on, and she came in and gave us a very stern lecture about hurting other people's feelings and that we should be ashamed of ourselves. She also warned us that we would be in big trouble if we made fun of her out in the hallway. I thought, jeez, it's only a movie.

Touching story, highly recommended!
chani-223 April 1999
I saw this back in 1982 on PBS, and I haven't forgotten it since. It's a very touching and heartbreaking story about faith and childhood. I really recommend it because even though it makes you cry, it also makes you remember what it was like to be a child. The acting by the children was wonderful, and it makes the viewer feel with the children in the story what it is like to experience something new for the very first time.

Better idea than execution
Horst_In_Translation29 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"All Summer in a Day" is an American short film that runs for slightly under half an hour and was directed by Ed Kaplan for television. The script in here comes from notable writer Ray Bradbury. It is about a group of kids, especially a boy and girl, who really want to see the sun. Apparently, that is nothing taken for granted anymore whenever and wherever they live. This is also how the emotion gets in the film. And while I thought, the child actors did a pretty good job, I was still underwhelmed by this almost 35-year-old film. The script may have been enough for a 15-minute movie and not really one that runs twice as long. Also the direction could have been better. All in all, the film does not fulfill the potential of its really interesting premise. I do not recommend checking it out.

The Real Theme of "All Summer in a Day"
sbs72130 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Many of the comments on this wonderful film -- which I cannot watch without crying, or even describe the plot to other people without choking up -- talk about how sad, & in one case even "depressing", the film is.

On the contrary: If you watch it closely, the film, although it IS very sad, is actually incredibly uplifting and cathartic. While the main thrust of the film seems to be how cruel children can be to each other -- which as a retired schoolteacher I have witnessed countless times -- most people are missing the point. The real theme of the movie is not cruelty or unfairness, but about FORGIVENESS. It is when the little girl, Margot, FORGIVES the little boy for doing what he does to her, that the viewer (at least myself) may be moved to tears. And knowing that children are capable of that is what helps you to feel better (catharsis) at the end of the film.

I believe that ALL children -- as did the entire student body at my school one year -- should have the opportunity to view this film, although I have also seen some children laugh at, & make fun of the film. These children do not understand the true meaning of the film, and it needs to be explained to them by a caring adult who understands what Ray Bradbury was trying to say.

Amazing Concept
shlavacek17 September 2002
Well, first off it is a great story, which I think the movie does it justice. Imagine living without the sun, if you are live to 42 years old you will see the Sun for a total of 6 Hours, well imagine being a child and seeing it for the first time. This Movie captures the emotion and wonderment of the children as well as the adult, with a great twist as only Ray Bradbury can turn.

Absolutely beautiful!
radioman970us18 August 2006
I cried too. Luckily I saw this at home without a bunch of narrow, self-centered kids around to ruin it. It's actually been over 20 years since I've had the pleasure and I feel like I've gone back in time. It's every bit as good as I remembered. The grim atmosphere is perfect, the young actors are quite good, the scoring is very nice. Of special note are the boy who plays the sort of bully and the little girl from Earth. Bradbury often took liberties with story elements, but it's never bothered me before and it doesn't with this material. The whole idea of "All Summer in a Day" is just full of Bradbury's unique and imaginative ideas. It's a step up from the similar shorts of Ray Bradbury Theater which never got their due from their conception up to their embarrassing DVD release. I guess it's an empty hope that we'll ever see these PBS shorts in a DVD set.

Great story; Great short film
Lazaro41121 January 2019
I saw this decades ago as a little kid on my local PBS channel; and I never forgot it, recently I looked it up again not knowing the name just knowing it rains and a little girl took me forever but I found it. And I'm so glad it still a very interesting story. Please check it out it's worth it.

Extraordinarily memorable
mkmcq21 May 2003
I saw this movie about 15 years ago, in the 6th grade, and have never forgotten it. Images from the movie are emblazoned on my brain, despite the fact that I didn't even know what the movie was called until I looked it up just now.

I find it somewhat remarkable that so many of the comments listed here are so similar -- saw the movie when young, but still remember it a couple decades later. That alone says a lot about it. It was an extremely powerful movie, using an exotic, scifi setting to highlight some of the greatest failings of human behavior and interaction and emphasize the role and potential power of visionaries and dreamers. It's really a shame that this movie is so hard to find (unless, apparently, you are an elementary school teacher). It is a visually stunning film -- the dreary scenes of unrelenting rain, the UV room, and finally the brief moments of real sun at the end. Haunting, and definitely worth seeking out.

Amazing
xemochickx30 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I only watched this for the first time tonight. I get small actor obsessions, and make a point to see all I can that they've done. My current one is Keith Coogan (he was credited as Keith Mitchell). And I found out my library had this movie, so I checked it out.

I am so amazingly glad I did check it out. It gave me a sort of indescribable feeling. When the kids see the sun...It reminded me of how wonderful that kind of thing was when I was a kid. I'm only 15, but it seems I'd totally forgotten. In that particular scene, it captures a great feeling of innocence, awe and wonder that only a younger kid can get. And everything else in the movie is wonderful too. Though a depressing story, and I found myself on the verge of tears when Margot sticks her hand into the small strip of sunlight, it's beautiful. And I also think the kids did a wonderful job. I was amazed at how well they captured honest emotion and...I'm horrible at describing things, and this movie gave me an indescribable feeling.

And I'm glad I'm not the only one to love this so much...Reading the other reviews, they all make perfect sense. Other than the whole seeing it on PBS when you were young. I figure that most kids my age won't get to see this...and I'm gonna make a point to share it.

This film is conspicuously missing from public access and recognition...
larkatbyu20 March 2007
I am biased about this film. The characters have beautiful interactions that are captured both in dialogue and by production decisions. The images, colors, textures, and music all enhance the effective portrayal of characters and emotional development of the story. I wish it was available on DVD, I would use it in my classroom.

I like the messages the film delivers. It is mature and not irritating like some of the films of Bradbury's other short stories (plants that make people vanish in the rain, men in dusty towns wasting time).

Although it is simple, it hints at insights into human behavior and our complex needs. It is well done.

looking for this movie
tonyaomps7 June 2004
My brother and I saw this movie years ago loved it. We had no idea what the name of it was and everyone we asked about it had no idea what we were talking about. I could only remember a few things about this movie because it had been such a long time ago. I do remember it being a very touching story. Just a few minutes ago my husband found the name of it for me. I am very excited to finally know the name of this movie and am now going to start searching for this movie. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Although it seems there are lots of people looking for this movie as well. Again I would greatly appreciate it if any could give me info on how to get a copy of this movie. Thank You

Decades later, this film haunts me
kc9456830 May 2014
I saw this beautiful, heart-breaking movie on HBO decades ago. I have not seen it since, but to this day it still haunts me. I would love to see it again! I wish I could find it on DVD or some streaming service. I think schools should show this film to every child. There are so many lessons to be learned about bullying, cruelty and, ultimately, forgiveness.

I met Ray Bradbury at a book signing in Berkeley, CA a number of years ago. I bought one of his books that contained this short story and had it opened to that page for him to sign. He asked me if I had seen the movie, and I told him I had seen it many years before and how moved I was by it. He seemed to be very happy with the film and then shared that this story was his wife's favorite.

The Search Is Over
davidbeber23 December 2003
I remember seeing this film in Jr High School & I've been dying to see it again. I love non-fantastical science fiction, the kind that's more post-modern than being set in the far future. Usually, in this type of film, the science fiction aspect is used more to draw out the human aspect of the characters rather than the science fiction element itself. This Ray Bradbury adaption is a film that fits well into this category. As soon as I discovered that so many other people had similar memories & have been leading a desperate search to find this film, I began a search of my own.

Well, I've finally been able to locate a copy & now my Sci-fi collection is almost complete.

davidbeber@hotmail.com

2007 update. This email is still good. I've helped dozens of people find and purchase the DVD of this hard to find film. If you're interested, send me a line.

wow.
jfgibson7319 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I happened to watch this for the first time on Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. It was just coincidence, but it was very fitting considering the themes in this story.

I thought this was short film was just about perfect. I am not a fan of science fiction in general, but I like how the best stories of the genre make their point by taking a familiar theme and placing it in another context. In this story, I felt like the main point was tolerance. The main character, Margot, was a girl who had grown up on earth and was now living on Venus. Being the only one in her class that has memories of what it was like on Earth, she is seen as a sort of pariah. We can see things from her point of view and feel what it is like to be shunned because she represents the life each of us know and take for granted. For anyone who has never been discriminated against, watching this movie may be the first time they put themselves in the point of view of the outsider. This is why I think so many educators like this movie: it gives students who have never been in the minority to imagine what it is like to be picked on for something as innocent as knowing how it feels to have the sunlight on your face. But the story takes it even a step further when we see the consequences of Margot's mistreatment, and then to a whole other level when we see how she deals with it. I have never read the original Bradbury story, but it's hard to imagine it is as powerful as this filmed version. The end result--and check the other comments on IMDb, because they back this up--is that once you have seen "All Summer In A Day," you will want to share it with others. This one is something special.

Bradbury alchemy
jdsoinee24 August 2020
I'm having a moment and so is my sister...I remember when she was 8 and I was 11, this was not called all summer in one day. We never forgot this movie, the overwhelming compassion and shared empathy for the main character's devasting loss. But we dont remember it being called this....we remember a title of either...it always rains on venus or it never rains on venus...something like that, kinda spooks me a bit...Im thinking mandela effect. Anywho...most likely, but nonetheless... There's a definite spiritual relevance right now in our current times...should you choose to watch this beautiful piece, if you can find it. I think of that small crack of sunlight slowly fading on a warm hand quite often these days and it reminds me to keep faith and not just to have hope, but to actively work at my own ascendance. They just don't make these like they used to or bring together the people who collaborated with heart on this great work.
