They almost certainly won’t win. They aren’t even on too many Emmys short lists to be nominated. But there are two shows eligible for Outstanding Comedy Series this year that — at least in this humble TV watcher’s opinion — really do deserve some sort of prize.
A James Beard Award for one of them, perhaps? And maybe the Order of Lenin for the other?
The first is “Julia,” HBO Max’s delicious comedy-drama following the life and career of cooking icon Julia Child, the grand dame of PBS who for 10 years, from 1963 to 1973, taught America how to sauté. Child has been played by some heavyweights in the past — Meryl Streep in 2009’s “Julia and Julia” and, of course, Dan Aykroyd in his famous 1978 “SNL” skit — but never before with the heart and soul, not to mention vocal alacrity, that veteran English actress Sarah Lancashire brings to the role.

Country artists love to talk about getting out of their comfort zone. But for many who have had a taste of mainstream success, especially on don’t-rock-the-boat country radio, it usually means nothing more revolutionary than changing their shirt.
Beginning back in 2012 with “Don’t Ya,” Brett Eldredge amassed a string of radio hits. Some were solid (“Wanna Be That Song”), others less than (“Lose My Mind,” “Drunk on Your Love”), but they kept him near the top of the charts, on the road with stars like Keith Urban, and profitable.

Longtime comedy screenwriting partners Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, known for such hits as Splash, Parenthood, City Slickers and A League of Their Own, will receive this year’s WGA West’s Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement. The prize is presented to guild members who have “advanced the literature of motion pictures and made outstanding contributions to the profession of the screenwriter.”
“Starting in the 1980s with a string of critical and commercial hits, the imprint Ganz and Mandel have left on movies is profound,” said WGA West president David A. Goodman. “Their scripts are always a balancing act; funny and moving, edgy but never offensive. They understand that in order for the jokes to work, the characters have to be compelling and relatable, but never lose sight of the fact that in a comedy, you need comedy. I Can Feel the Beale: Jenkins Does Justice to Classic Baldwin Novel
Following his history making Best Picture winner Moonlight, stakes are set high for Barry Jenkins’ third feature, which is also a major milestone as the first English language adaptation of a James Baldwin novel with If Beale Street Could Talk, originally published in 1974 (but previously adapted in 1998 by Robert Guediguian as Where the Heart Is). It’s safe to say Jenkins rises to the occasion, introducing the film with an explanation from Baldwin himself explaining the importance behind the meaning of Beale street, where the blues and jazz were born, giving voice to the lamentation of the Black experience in America, and the continual blatant and systemic racism which continues to be a defining reality.…...

The time has come to say goodbye to what can arguably be TV’s most progressive family in history — or as some of the kids may say these days: TV’s most “woke” family. Created by Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige, The Fosters ended its five-season run tonight after providing television landscape with a series that gave a new meaning of a modern family. The Fosters tackled normal family drama such as sibling dynamics, teen angst, parent-child conflict, and domestic strife, but the Freeform series bent the traditional narrative to the times with a same-sex couple of Stef (Teri Polo) and Lena (Sherri Saum) raising a blended family that included Brandon (David Lambert), Stef’s biological son, twins Jesus (Noah Centineo) & Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) and Callie (Maia Mitchell) and Jude (Hayden Byerly).
Tonight’s episode titled “Where the Heart Is” was the bookend of a three-part finale that began on Monday.

What Does It Mean???? Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi recently posted a couple of images on his Twitter featuring Natalie Portman. One from the film Leon: The Professional and the other from the film Where the Heart Is both starring Portman. The caption reads "Heed the Signs #Ragnarok". Check it out:

This has many people speculating. Two Natalie Portman images side by side. Both with trees. Some have said it's just a joke about Groot dating Jane while others say that maybe the actress may have a cameo after all. My personal thoughts, while unlikely, are this:
Natalie Portman holding a tree is a reference to Groot. But moreover that we will finally getting our Thor/Groot crossover in the Marvel universe. During Secret Wars, there was a whole police unit made up of Thors, one of which was Groot Thor.

Marvel Studios certainly seems to have a difficult time hanging on to some of their early leading women. Both Gwyneth Paltrow and Natalie Portman have always played characters that seemed destined to get left behind in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. Portman’s Jane Foster seemed especially vulnerable. In Thor: The Dark World, they had somehow managed to make the plot revolve around her completely, all while giving her absolutely nothing to do.
It surprised no one when it seemed that Thor: Ragnarok would take Thor away from Earth, and away from Jane Foster. While that’s not necessarily a confirmation that she’d have absolutely nothing to do, between the direction of the plot, and Natalie Portman seeming to have little interest in returning to the McU, it didn’t bode well for her. However, a recent tweet from Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has given us a bit to think about.

Walmart prides itself on being the place where you can "Save Money, Live Better," and one Texas teen took that motto to the extreme recently, camping out hidden in one of his local superstores for four days. In a plot that recalls both the 2000 Natalie Portman vehicle Where the Heart Is, as well as a 2003 episode of King of the Hill, the unnamed 14-year-boy spent days living in two makeshift "compounds" he had constructed in a Corsicana, Texas, Walmart. According to local affiliate CBS Dfw, the boy cleared two spaces behind the store's baby and home goods aisles, stocking them with food,...

Neither shaken, nor stirred. Just perennially cool. While he'll no doubt be best remembered for the seven James Bond films he made from 1973 to 1985, Sir Roger Moore - he was knighted in 2003, for his humanitarian work on behalf of Unicef - also wears many other labels proudly. He was a young MGM star (opposite the then-equally young Elizabeth Taylor), a TV star and producer (The Saint), an author twice over (a 2008 autobiography, My Word Is My Bond, and the brand-new Bond on Bond: Reflections on 50 Years of James Bond Movies), and a word-class raconteur. It was in those last two...

When I went, aged 7 or 8, to audition for Music College, I was asked to sing “the first song that came into my head”. That song was the A Team theme music, by Mike Post. My older brother, in his audition, apparently sung the same thing. My mother chastised us afterwards, but clearly our renditions of this truly inspiring piece of music were acceptable, as we were both accepted.

I both read the original Billie Letts book and watched the film version of Where The Heart Is very closely together in 2001 -- so closely together I can't recall whether I saw the movie or read the book first. Either way, I remember that I didn't care too much for the movie but I really liked the book. If only I had realized, during this truly homesick year of my life spent in Minnesota, that the 2000 film was shot in Central Texas, I'm certain it would have made more of a sentimental impact on me.
There really are not many locational hints in Where the Heart Is to tell you that the movie was filmed in Texas, unless you recognized the Baylor campus at the end. When I watched it more recently, I spied Sixth Street standing in for Nashville and I spotted a building in Lockhart's town square appearing...

C.B.S. Slipping From Long Daytime TV Lead
By George Gent
New York Times
January 21, 1972
Daytime television is a woman's world of exquisitely prolonged suffering, greed, hate, abortions, betrayals and young and middle-aged love. It is a world with a seemingly endless fascination for some 50 million viewers who together make up a market of more than $300-million annually for which the three major networks battle tirelessly. For 17 years, the Columbia Broadcasting System has reigned supreme over that world without serious challenge. Until now.
The challenge, from the National Broadcasting Company and American Broadcasting Company, has sparked a frantic scramble at all three networks to further improve their ratings posture and has set off another round of the TV industry's favorite indoor parlor games - executive musical chairs.
The threat to C.B.S was best explained by Oscar Katz, the networks vice president of programs on the East Coast and a veteran daytime programmer.

Fringe 3x22 - In Which There Are No Happy Endings and Peter Doesn't Exist
A week later and my brain has finally been rewired after last week’s Mind-blowing Fringe finale. From the first five minutes to the last five seconds, I was enraptured. The last time I was this engaged by a season finale, an island disappeared. This time, it was a man…
Things That Made Me Happy:
The Beginning of the End - We began where we left off, with Peter catapulted 15 years into the future and rather severely injured. But with fancy future technology, he’s patched up real good and sent on his merry way into a world full of worm-holes, quarantined-zones, amber and terrorists. Welcome to 2026 folks!
The new, grey-opening titles added to the darker, apocalyptic feel, with words such as neural partitioning and thought-extraction replacing the familiar ones. Hope was also a new word.

Yesterday I posted a picture of Jean Reno and Natalie Portman from The Professional, simply because I stumbled across the photo about a week or two ago and felt it fit a slight lull in content. Then a few people began ranking and discussing Portman's other films, which got me to thinking about what my favorite Portman films were and how I would rank them.
For the sake of this argument, Portman's film career started very early so this also means there were a few notable films she was in that I don't necessarily consider "Natalie Portman films". If I had considered them both, Heat and Mars Attacks! would have made this list, but her contribution to both isn't enough to warrant placement, though I tried hard to make a case for Heat.
Also, before we get to the six I chose as my favorite Portman films, I should say...

No Strings Attached
Directed by: Ivan Reitman
Cast: Ashton Kutcher, Natalie Portman, Kevin Kline, Ludacris, Greta Gerwig
Running Time: 1 hr 50 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: January 21, 2011
Plot: A young man (Kutcher) and woman (Portman) struggle to keep their relationship strictly sexual with no romantic complications. Supposedly, hilarity ensues.
Who’S It For? I wanna say romantic comedy fans, but this isn’t even for all rom-com lovers. This wreaks of the male-oriented romantic comedy, which features a few shots of T & A to satiate the appetites of the over-sexed and the women that they wish existed.
Expectations: Ashton Kutcher’s involved? Yeah, my expectations were not high. Natalie Portman is almost insufferably cute so I thought I’d be able to tough it out for her. Nick Allen suggested the Academy may strip Portman of her Oscar for Black Swan after this one, and I’m not sure he’s too far off.

Natalie Portman has been cleaning up at the Awards Shows this year for her role in Black Swan. With her new film No Strings Attached opening this week, we figured it’s about time to pay tribute to one of Hollywood’s’ most notable actresses.
Top Ten: Best Of Natalie Portman Honorable Mention: Mars Attacks
“I guess it wasn’t the dove”. Mars Attacks! was based on a crazy pack of bubble gum trading cards from the 1950′s that featured exploitative gore not tolerated in films of the time — people burned alive, trembling women ‘threatened’ by nihilistic, gleefully violent skull-headed Martians — you know, the subtle approach. The movie reruns the alien invasion playbook as it might be envisioned by Mad magazine, zeroing in on the formula with inspired anarchy. Natalie Portman is part of a truly ridiculous ensemble cast that includes Jack Nicholson, Pam Grier, Tom Jones, and Sarah Jessica Parker...

Colin Firth and Natalie Portman will be respectively presented the Desert Palm Achievement Award for Actor and Actress at the 22nd annual Palm Springs International Film Festival. The Awards Gala will kick off the 2011 awards season on Saturday, January 8 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.
This award is very fitting for both actors. Firth is receiving major Oscar buzz for his performance as King George VI in "The King's Speech," and Portman for Darren Aronofsky's "The Black Swan."
I'm excited for these two actors, and I'm excited for the Film fest. I'm a Palm Springs resident so this is good news! Here's the complete press release:

Craig here, asking you all (on her 40th birthday): where is Uma at?
Ah, Uma. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. And despite actually being Tarantino's Bride twice last decade. What is it about Uma? She's widely known and adored by many, yet never seems to (quite) make it to the top of the A-list. The likes of Helen Hunt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon, Renée Zellweger, Jennifer Connelly, Angelina Jolie and Hilary Swank - all peers and contemporaries - have bagged themselves Oscars in the last thirteen-or-so years. The simple question is: where's Uma's gold?
She's one of the most uniquely beautiful actresses working, but nowadays, more so than in the early '90s, she doesn't often tend to get the recognition come awards season, or even appear on any of those Sexiest Hollywood Stars lists that crop up year-on-year anymore (although, is this really a fair...

The end of April is typically the calm before the summer storm, but Hollywood has become more and more aggressive with the timeframe as the years have progressed. This year, for instance, with Iron Man 2 set for May 7, high-profile A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) launches at 3,332 theaters on the April 30-May 1 weekend. Five Years Ago - 2005 This weekend was one of the industry's most significant bids to start the summer season early with the release of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and XXX: State of the Union, but it failed. Hitchhiker's Guide blasted off with a chart-topping $21.1 million at 3,133 sites, which was solid by sci-fi comedy standards but perceived as somewhat of a letdown for such a long-awaited book adaptation. The Vin Diesel-free XXX sequel opened in third with a disastrous $12.7 million at 3,480 sites after giving a generic Tom Clancy treatment to the extreme James Bond of the first movie.

Being typecast as a certain kind of actor is a bitch, particularly for younger actors (especially those on long-running television shows) who are identified with certain characters or types of roles. Unfortunately, there's usually an expiration date on those types of characters/roles, so an actor is faced with one of two options: Ride it out as long as you can (see The Olson Twins and Michael J. Fox, to an extent) or do something dramatic to redefine yourself. Sometimes, however, you can overshoot when you're attempting to redefine yourself -- look at Elizabeth Berkeley (Showgirls) and Lindsay Lohan (I Know Who Killed Me), who essentially flushed their movie careers down the toilet by showing us too much. Of course, people like Adam Sandler (Punch-Drunk Love), Jim Carrey (The Truman Show), and Will Ferrell (Stranger than Fiction) have also made these dramatic career movies, but in doing so, they didn't...

With pictures of Kristen Stewart as a stripper in the upcoming Sundance player "Welcome to the Rileys" hitting the Internet last week, we decided to take a look back at five Hollywood actresses who starred as a stripper in the past, and how the decision impacted their careers. Some were launched into success stories, while others took a sharp downward turn. Hopefully, Stewart will take some pointers from those who came before her and avoid squashing the success "The Twilight Saga" has given her. If that's even possible.
One unusual fact that's worth noting: three of the five names on this list -- Demi Moore, Lindsay Lohan and Heather Graham -- all followed up their stripper appearances with roles in the Emilio Estevez-directed film, "Bobby." It's hard to say what that means, though three counts as a trend. Apparently, fake stripping drives female actors to Emilio Estevez. Go figure.
