You can’t always go by your first impressions. When the story of uber-lobbyist Jack Abramoff first hit the news, the media seemed to rejoice in having a hiss-able bad guy. The cable news channels loved running the video of his “perp walk” complete with wardrobe by Boris Badenov ( matching black fedora and trench coat ). Early last year we got to know more of the full story with Alex Gibney’s documentary Casino Jack And The United States Of Money. And now the feature drama based on the true story of D.C. corruption has arrived at movie theatres: George Hickenlooper’s Casino Jack with Kevin Spacey in the title role. With this telling we learn much more about the real man behind the scandals ( and late night TV monologue jokes).

When you're offered the opportunity to talk with Jeffrey Tambor -- a.k.a Hank Kingsley, a.k.a. George Bluth Sr, a.k.a. Sid Garner for those who really keep track of these things -- do you say no? You do not -- of course, you do not. Jeffrey was in town to participate in the closing night of the 5th Annual Fordham Law School Film Festival, during which his big-screen debut, ...And Justice for All -- in which he plays a lawyer driven to the borders of sanity by the moral contradictions of his profession -- would be presented, after which would sit down with critic Neil Gabler and festival organizer Thane Rosenbaum to discuss the film. I spent time with Jeffrey and Thane before the event, and got some surprising insights on the creation of this alternately shocking and hilarious film, as...

Image Entertainment & Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Sign Multi-Year DVD/Blu-ray Distribution Deal
In the wake of the recent announcement of the upcoming Criterion Collection release of the “New Hollywood” box set, called America Lost And Found: The Bbs Story, it looks like the Collection may have a chance to delve back into the Sony Pictures/Columbia Pictures catalogue, thanks to a new deal.
According to a press release, Criterion Collection distributor Image Entertainment has just struck a multi-year deal with the film studio. The deal will allow Sphe to manufacture and release any and all upcoming Image Entertainment Blu-ray and DVD releases, and in return, Sphe has licensed “an undisclosed” number of films from their back log to Image for distribution.
This deal, taken along with the America Lost And Found: The Bbs Story box set featuring solely Sony Pictures releases, leads me to believe that we may very well see a few more Sony Pictures releases getting the Criterion treatment. The...

The streak is over! On Tuesday night (July 13), the National League broke an incredible streak of futility and topped the American League by a score of 3-1 in the 2010 Major League Baseball All Star Game. In winning the Midsummer Classic, the National League will now have home field advantage at this year's World Series. Though Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann walked away as the Mvp of the game (his three-run double represented all of the offense for his squad), there were also great performances from New York Mets third baseman David Wright, Chicago Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd and pitchers Ubaldo Jimenez, David Price, Matt Capps and Jonathan Broxton. It was an excellent game, especially if you like pitching, as there were a tremendous number of strikeouts spread across nine innings.

John Forsythe, who starred as the urbane Blake Carrington on the 1980s primetime soap "Dynasty" and provided the unseen voice of Charlie on "Charlie's Angels," has died. He was 92.
Forsythe died Thursday in Santa Ynez, Calif., of complications from pneumonia after a yearlong struggle with cancer. He owned a ranch in the area north of Santa Barbara.
With his smooth manner and silver mane, Forsythe exuded paternal power and iron-fisted control on ABC's "Dynasty" as a ruthless Denver oil magnate who dealt not only with the high-stakes vagaries of the oil business but with the even more volatile eruptions of his competitive womenfolk, embodied by Linda Evans' good-girl purity and Joan Collins' bad-girl sexuality.
For his portrayal of Carrington, Forsythe earned two Golden Globes and three Emmy nominations. So popular was the show that in 1985, Forsythe became the spokesperson for a line of men's cologne called "Carrington." He...

Oh, goodie, it's another Philip Roth adaptation about an aging man awakened in life through an affair with a much younger woman! This one is based on Roth's latest, The Humbling, and while I'm sure the writing in the novel is great as usual, I can't help but think the movie version will be more of the same old man with hot actress erotic fantasy stuff of The Human Stain and Elegy.
According to the New York Times, Al Pacino, who bought the rights to the book, will star as the suicidal, past-his-prime stage actor who winds up on a farm in upstate New York making it with his friends' daughter, a 40-year-old (unless Hollywood expectantly lowers here age) with lesbian tendencies and an interest in kinky stuff like strap-ons.
Directing the picture is Barry Levinson, who has collaborated with Pacino before in different capacity. He co-wrote the 1979 legal drama...

Before I start gushing about just how great this cartoon and, by connection, this set are, let’s establish two things. First, for every good thing I have to say about the entire set I include a single footnote: this should be available in a Blu-ray release as well, the animation would be sharper and bolder, the audio would be stunning and the entire package would have had that much more relevance considering the current trends of digital media. Second, this is so much more than just a ‘cartoon’. As is said a few times in the extra features of the series, Justice League may be the greatest superhero animated series to have ever existed. So what does that imply about this complete series set? One of the best ever?

Welcome to Random Roles, wherein we talk to actors about the characters who defined their careers. The catch: They don't know beforehand what roles we'll ask them to talk about. The actor: A master at playing warped characters, beginning with his breakthrough role as Al Pacino's unraveling law partner in .And Justice For All, Jeffrey Tambor has been the go-to guy for anyone needing an officious boob or exasperated authority figure for nearly 40 years. After two decades of memorable turns in everything from Three's Company to Hill Street Blues, Tambor landed his first Emmy nomination for playing loveably dense (yet obnoxiously self-important) talk-show sidekick Hank Kingsley on The Larry Sanders Show; his second nomination followed in 2003 for his work on the similarly cult-beloved Arrested Development, where he played the Bluth family's slyly manipulative patriarch and his spaced-out twin brother. With more than a hundred roles...
