“Last Chance U,” like any other show worth a sophomore season, carefully approaches both past and present. The East Mississippi Community College Lions, the football team profiled in the first season of the Netflix documentary series, are back again, but this new round of stories lives in the shadow of those that came before. This sequel keeps the established skeleton of a fall slate of games, brings back some beloved characters and checks in on departed favorites. The subject may be sports, but this is as TV as TV gets.
The show’s second season, tracking Emcc’s 2016 season, has the added layer of self-awareness. As a town shy of 1,000 people, director Greg Whiteley’s Netflix series has now created an identity for Scooba, Mississippi, one that not all its citizens are particularly happy with. Football players are never just football players, especially at any level above Pop Warner. But...

After the high-flying Atlanta Falcons plummeted from a 13—3 record in 2012 to 4—12 last season, it would have been easy to lie low ahead of the 2014 campaign. Instead, the HBO reality series Hard Knocks is following the Falcons into training camp for much more than a bird's-eye view (premiering Tuesday, at 10/9c). "The story this year," says producer Ken Rodgers of NFL Films, "is the story we tell all of our children: It doesn't matter how you get knocked down; what matters is how you get back up."

WWE has been long renowned for their outstanding live television production, working on the fly, and often in one take. A little over ten years ago, however, WWE Home Video took a drastic change, and the company began producing documentary features on everything from the company, superstars, events, titles, stables, as well as promotions in which WWE had competed with in previous years.
What would follow would be nearly universal acclaim for production on these documentaries, as the WWE had seemingly unmatched resources and insight to provide education and entertainment for their viewers in a manner in which wasn’t being done by major sports leagues such as the Ufc, Mlb, and the NBA. Seemingly the one exception was the NFL, whose NFL films line had been a television success for years.

Steve Sabol, who helped change the perception of the National Football League, and revolutionized the sports highlight package along the way, died today of brain cancer at the age of 69. Sabol’s father Ed founded NFL films in 1962, and hired his son—a film school student at the time—to be his cinematographer, shooting games around the league. Steve Sabol eventually became NFL Film’s president and chief creative force, crafting short documentaries that had a look and a tone more like popular art than mere sports reporting. In the ‘60s and ‘70s heyday of NFL Films, when ...

Steve Sabol, who died Tuesday of brain cancer at age 69, wasn't the founder of NFL Films, but he was its heart and soul. Here's a look at some of the ways Sabol helped his father, Ed Sabol, turn a $240,000 deal into a force that changed TV sports, the movies—and especially Sundays: 1. The Mythology: The 1965 deal struck between the league and the Sabols, who committed to documenting every NFL game of every NFL team, helped transform a game into a religion, and highlight reels into drama, complete with tantalizing slow motion and, in the early years, "the voice of God," narrator John Facenda. The touch of the younger Sabol, who was a film buff as much as a football fan, was evident....

Steve Sabol, half of the father-son team credited with revolutionizing sports broadcasting and president of NFL Films, passed away Tuesday (Sept. 18) after a battle with brain cancer at the age of 69 in Moorestown, N.J., reports the AP.
Sabol was diagnosed with a brain tumor after suffering from a seizure in March 2011. His father Ed Sabol founded NFL Films in 1964 and Steve worked with him as a cinematographer from the very beginning. The two are pictured together above in 2004.
Before his father was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Steve told the AP, "We see the game as art as much as sport. That helped us nurture not only the game's traditions but to develop its mythology: America's Team, The Catch, The Frozen Tundra."
Over the course of his career, Steve Sabol earned 35 Emmys for writing, cinematography, editing, directing and producing.

Steve Sabol, who ran NFL Films for more than 25 years after the Emmy-winning production company was created by his father, died Tuesday after a long battle with brain cancer. He was 69. Sobol was originally a cameraman for the company, which pioneered the use of wiring players and coaches for sound, helping give fans inside perspective on the sport and its stars. NFL Films also pioneered now-standard sports-film effects like ground-level slow motion and montages; its popularity made it a key player in helping elevate football past baseball to become America’s favorite TV sport. Much of that push was attributable to Sabol, who took over as president in 1985, winning more than 40 Emmys and overseeing 107 Emmys for the company. Sabol enshrined his father Ed into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last year, just learning he had an inoperable brain tumor, according to NFL.com.

In the early ’60s, Sabol joined his father Ed Sabol in creating a new style of looking at the sport of football — it was intimate, passionate, and brought fans used to watching from the stands, or their living-room La-z-Boys, closer to the field than they had ever been. When the Miami Heat defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder to win the 2012 NBA championship, the Florida metropolis went bananas for basketball. But the hoops have been put away for another season, and a Miami sports fan's thoughts can now turn to a ball of a different shape -- and HBO is there to take them behind the scenes.
On Tuesday, Aug. 7, HBO and NFL Films' documentary series "Hard Knocks" heads to "Training Camp With the Miami Dolphins" to see how the venerable football franchise -- established in 1966 -- readies itself to win back the pro sports bragging rights in its home city.
Asked what's great about having the Dolphins on this season, Rick Bernstein, executive producer for HBO, tells Zap2it, "It's a number of things. One, it's the history of the team. The team has some good characters that will make for a good series. We've got a head coach in Joe Philbin,...

HBO will return for a seventh season of its NFL training camp series Hard Knocks on August 7 featuring the Miami Dolphins, a year after the network scrapped the Emmy-winning documentary series because of the NFL lockout. Espn reported that the Atlanta Falcons and New York Jets were also mentioned as possible teams to be profiled; in 2010, the Jets’ season on the show earned HBO three Sports Emmys. Five hourlong episodes are planned for the show, co-produced with NFL Films. It’s a logical move for the Dolphins, whose ownership group is trying to drum up fan interest in a mediocre team. Owner Stephen Ross has brought in celebrities like Gloria Estefan and Venus and Serena Williams as minority owners, and the team has a red-carpet entrance to the team’s Sun Life Stadium for celebrities attending games.
