Those who turned down Harry Potter, be it the books or the films, must find themselves plagued with regret. After all, not only is it one of the most successful franchises ever, but also a worldwide cultural phenomenon. While Steven Spielberg is one of those who said no to the films, the filmmaker is not filled with regret over missing out on Hollywood’s golden child.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001)
It is interesting to think about what it would have been like if Steven Spielberg’s name was attached to Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The filmmaker once opened up about why he decided to let go of such a huge opportunity which would have brought in a huge paycheck for him and the reason is as absolutely adorable.

Conversations about the future of artificial intelligence can be found all over SXSW this year — and not all of the festival’s attendees are thrilled with the idea. Specifically, the film and TV fans catching screenings of world premieres including “The Fall Guy” and “Immaculate” made their AI displeasure loud and clear on Tuesday at the Paramount Theatre in Austin. (Scroll down to see for yourself.)
The quick-turnaround video editors at SXSW cut a daily sizzle reel highlighting previous panels, premieres and other events, which then runs before festival screenings. On Tuesday, the fourth edition of that daily video focused on the wide variety of keynotes and panelists in town to discuss AI. Those folks sure seem bullish on artificial intelligence, and the audiences at the Paramount — many of whom are likely writers and actors who just spent much of 2023 on the picket line trying to reign in the potentially...

And now, AI is all set to take over the NBA with its new system which is quite cleverly called, ‘Nb-ai.” However, producer Chris Miller does not seem too happy with this feature that lets the viewer personalize his viewing experience.

Idles stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday for a performance of their new song, “Gift Horse.”
The appearance comes one day after Idles’ electrifying show at The Bowery Ballroom in New York, where vocalist Joe Talbot dedicated “Gift Horse” to his daughter. Idles are gearing up to release their fifth studio album, Tangk, on February 16th. “Gift Horse” is the album’s third single, and followed the slow jam “Grace” and the LCD Soundsystem-featuring “Dancer.” The band has mapped out a lengthy 2024 tour throughout the US and Europe; get tickets to all US shows via StubHub and all international shows on viagogo.

In the mid-90s, GameShark established itself as the name in video game cheats by releasing a series of devices that would allow you to access a collection of pre-programmed cheat codes for various popular titles. While those peripherals didn’t always work as intended, they were a revelation for cheat code enthusiasts everywhere. No more hunting down cheat code books, subscribing to magazines, or relying on the scoops of so-called friends. They were literal game-changers.
Over time, though, the GameShark brand became a shell of its former self. Diminishing product quality and changes in the industry turned the formerly essential accessories into relics of a misspent youth. Now, though, a company is trying to revive the GameShark brand for the modern era. Before you get too excited, though, you should know that they’re going about it in the strangest way possible.

Magellan AI, the podcast analytics platform, has partnered with Adelaide, the leader in attention-based media quality measurement, to surface attention metrics within its podcast measurement suite. Through this collaboration, Magellan AI is one of the first podcast intelligence platforms to offer show-level attention ratings by campaign, providing advertisers with critical insights into advertising effectiveness.
Recent coverage in Digiday highlights Adelaide’s advanced approach to measuring media quality in podcast environments using its omnichannel Au metric, which predicts any placement’s probability of attention and impact. Au is generated by a machine-learning model that considers exposure, eye-tracking, and full-funnel outcome data. For podcasts, exposure data falls into categories like genre, ad position, ad load, and ad type.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
Many of the most memorable moments of my life have revolved around cinema. (Let’s not debate whether that is a good thing.) And 2023 was no exception. There was a twentieth-anniversary screening of the mesmerizing Mulholland Drive at Buffalo’s North Park Theatre featuring a performance from the remarkable Rebekah Del Rio. That was a biggie, but many of my most indelible 2023 cinema memories include my children. In July, my wife and our two kiddos had a rare group cinema outing to Barbie on its opening day, and I have rarely seen my then-eight-year-old daughter more genuinely excited to dance the night away. The adoption of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in the U.K. is driven by teenagers and children, according to a new study from media regulator Ofcom.
“Gen Z driving early adoption,” it says in the summary of the latest version of its annual Ofcom Online Nation 2023 report, published just after midnight London time on Tuesday. Generation Z is defined as people “born between the late 1990s and the early 2010s.”
Especially the younger members of that group have been embracing AI. “Four in five (79 percent) online teenagers aged 13-17 now use Generative AI tools and services, with a significant minority of younger children aged 7-12 also adopting the technology (40 percent),” according to Ofcom. “Adult internet users aged 16 and above are, on average, comparatively more reluctant users of Generative AI (31 percent).”

The 2000s was a strange time for genre filmmaking and especially science fiction. While sci-fi cinema was in theory thriving, that was mainly thanks to the presence of franchises that were, in fact, their own mini-genres (like Star Wars and Star Trek). Then there were superhero films, always sort of a cousin to sci-fi, with the X-Men and Spider-Man series both exploding and the Marvel Cinematic Universe making its debut with Iron Man (2008) just as the decade came to a close.
But there were some top-shelf literary adaptations as well. Steven Spielberg’s A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001) was a flawed yet powerful expansion of a Brian Aldiss story while his War of the Worlds (2005) and Minority Report (2002) were outstanding takes on classic tales from H.G. Wells and Philip K. Dick (there might have been no sci-fi filmmaker more consistent at the time than The Beard). Other remakes or adaptations,...

At every turn, Garth Davis’s Foe not only fails to adequately redress or rework played-out tropes within its high-concept world, but its examination of marriage and identity is also hackneyed. Written by Davis and Iain Reid, this sci-fi chamber piece feels Frankensteined together, each limb a reminder of more heartbreaking, wondrous, or sophisticated works that reconciling with the end of the world and the fragility of human relationships.
In the dystopia of Foe, new “self-determinative” lifeforms are conceived to take on dirty work in a ravaged land. They’re first introduced to us as an idea via the opening title card, which informs us that Earth’s natural and fertile resources, like water and soil, will become rare and valuable commodities later this century. As big of a threat as artificial intelligence is to TV and film, there’s one place where nearly everyone can agree it may be beneficial: sorting through a streamer’s seemingly endless library. That’s exactly the strategy Tubi has launched with Rabbit AI, the ad-supported streamer’s collaboration with ChatGPT.
It also marks the first time a streamer has officially partnered with AI to enhance its search.
Currently, Tubi uses traditional search and discovery tools to catalog its content. Users basically enter in a keyword and, as long as a title is indexed correctly, a corresponding title appears from that search. The streamer also uses machine learning to create containers of genres and subgenres that may be of interest to users.

Tubi, Fox Corp.’s ad-supported video-streaming service, has turned to OpenAI’s ChatGPT artificial-intelligence agent to suggest new TV shows and movies to watch — although the feature is really just a form of natural-language search.
Tubi’s Rabbit AI is powered by ChatGPT-4. The AI feature, which shows up on the bottom of Tubi’s mobile app, lets users “ask questions the same way you’d ask a friend.” For example, if you type, “Any movies that are funny about sharks?” into Rabbit AI, it will return a list of titles including “Shark Bait,” “Sharknado,” “Sharkula” and “Bigfoot vs Megalodon.” (See demo video below.) Users can then save the results onto their My List watchlist. In addition, search history is saved for future reference.

He's one of the greatest, most successful filmmakers in the history of the moving image, but there were times throughout his career when even Steven Spielberg needed a hit. Badly.
One such crucial juncture arrived in 1980. After the unprecedented blockbuster combo of "Jaws" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," Spielberg face-planted with the critically reviled World War II comedy "1941." Turns out a lot of folks thought making hay out of the Pacific Coast's gun-toting freakout in the immediate wake of Pearl Harbor was in poor taste. In any event, though the film was a moderate box office hit, it was perceived as a full-scale fiasco for the Hollywood wunderkind. Had success spoiled Steven Spielberg?

We already know Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is one of the sticking points in both the SAG and WGA strikes. And we’ve already seen instances where fans have used fairly rudimentary technology to create some truly fascinating (and scary) content with this A.I. tech that is commonly found online. This has quickly raised a number of questions in the film/TV industry, with filmmakers and actors wondering just how far people can take this tech.

Drew Barrymore starred in "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" when she was only six years old. Nearly 40 years later, her director, Steven Spielberg, appeared on "The Drew Barrymore Show" for a birthday celebration and they reminisced about filming the seminal alien classic. Spielberg recalled that Barrymore "came up with a lot of lines in the movie" as a little girl, including the memorable scene when Gertie first sees the titular E.T. In the movie, she takes one quizzical look at the alien and says, "I don't like his feet."
"She said that during rehearsal, and I said, 'Drew, can you remember to say that when the cameras are rolling?'" he remembered.
The feet observation was Barrymore's genuine response to the E.T. animatronic designed by the renowned special effects artist Carlo Rambaldi. It's not hard to see why she reacted this way. E.T. is the definition of ugly cute with his wrinkled,...

San Francisco, July 30 (Ians) Software major Adobe has introduced a new AI feature called ‘Generative Expand’, allowing users to expand images beyond their original aspect ratios.
Powered by the Firefly-based technology as Generative Fill, Generative Expand enables users to seamlessly expand and resize any image by using the Crop tool, according to the company.
On clicking “Generate” the empty space gets filled with AI-generated content that naturally blends with the existing image.
This streamlined workflow enables users to create and ideate in Photoshop with Generative AI more quickly and intuitively than before.
“Suppose your subject is cut off, your image is not in the aspect ratio you want, or an object in focus is misaligned with other parts of the image — you can use Generative Expand to expand your canvas and get your image to look like anything you can imagine,” Adobe said in a blogpost.

Snapchat owner Snap Inc. beat Wall Street estimates in its second quarter earnings report, with revenues of $1.07 billion topping the $1.05 billion expectation, and it narrowed its quarterly losses to $377.3 million.
Still, a difficult year-over-year comparison (revenues were down 4 percent from a year ago) and a warning for Q3 sent the share price tumbling after market hours.
The company said that its user base has grown to 397 million daily active users, with more than 4 million Snapchat+ subscribers.
Snap touted its revenue growth of 8 percent compared to Q1, citing changes to its ad platform. But the advertising business is also the source of much uncertainty.
“From a revenue perspective, our business remains in a period of rapid transition as we work to improve our advertising platform, while forward visibility of advertising demand remains limited,” the company said in its Q3 guidance, adding that its expects revenue growth to be down 5 percent to flat,...

New Delhi, July 20 (Ians) Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to generate a multitude of positive outcomes, but like any other emerging and disruptive technology, it possesses a few risks, which need to be effectively managed through the implementation of appropriate risk management strategies and frameworks, experts said here on Thursday.
As AI takes centre-stage, fostering collaboration among industry, academia and the government can act as a catalyst to unlock the full potential of AI and drive digital transformation across various other sectors, besides telecom, to help India become a $5 trillion economy, experts said at the first-ever AI summit here.
AI can play a crucial role in advancing healthcare, smart cities, infrastructure, financial inclusivity, transportation, climate, gender equality and other key priority areas, said Aruna Sundararajan, Chairperson, Broadband India Forum (Bif), and former telecom secretary.

Obviously, it takes years for feature films to get developed, written, filmed, and then released. And though artificial intelligence has been a topic of sci-fi films for years, it feels like there is no better time than now to release a film about rogue A.I. taking over the world and enslaving humanity. So, you have to imagine filmmaker Gareth Edwards is pretty damn excited to be releasing “The Creator” this year.

Sci-fi thrillers that suggest tech is not to be trusted… Turn on the news at the moment – or ask Alexa to turn it on – and it is nothing but scare stories about the dangers of Artificial Intelligence, and how humankind will be taken over and wiped out by ultra-intelligent robots. It’s not like the sci-fi genre hasn’t been telling us this for decades!
The new sci-fi Sight Extended, released in the UK from 12 June, is a dark and imaginative exploration of the dangers of letting technology take over your life, and the terrifying possibilities of Augmented Reality running amok. To celebrate its release, here’s a look at some of the best films that suggest technological progress comes at a cost.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1969)
Stanley Kubrick was fascinated by the concept of Artificial Intelligence – he developed the film A.I: Artificial Intelligence, which was directed by Steven Speilberg.

Cynthia Weil, a Grammy-winning lyricist of notable range and endurance who enjoyed a decades-long partnership with husband Barry Mann and helped write “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling”, “On Broadway”, “Walking in the Rain” and dozens of other hits, has died at age 82.
Weil’s daughter, Dr. Jenn Mann, said that the songwriter died Thursday at her home in Beverly Hills, California, “surrounded by her family.” Mann, the couple’s only child, declined to cite a specific cause of death.

The anxiety around A.I. is strong at the moment and that’s completely understandable given the way it can be seen to take existing art to generate something entirely new. It raises questions about what the future of being an artist means when there is software out there that can potentially, for argument’s sake, create original work. Director Patrick Hanser Aka the musical artist Bacará has created a music video for his latest single Cores (Colours) using A.I. software but rather than striving for an artificially created realism he uses it as a way to blend an amalgamation of classic styles, drawing from the work of everyone from Kandinsky to Picasso to create a kaleidoscopic smorgasbord of artistic sensibilities. Dn caught up with Hanser to discuss the creation of his video, the lengthy experimentation period he needed to work through, and his thoughts surrounding the future of art and A.

Steven Spielberg has directed and produced a wide diversity of films in his career. But out of all of his films, Spielberg expected that his sci-fi hit Minority Report might’ve been his darkest yet.
Steven Spielberg once felt that ‘Minority Report’ would be his most cynical film Steven Spielberg | Andreas Rentz/Getty Images
Minority Report is one of a few films where Spielberg teamed up with megastar Tom Cruise. Although the film was released in 2002, Spielberg had the feature in his mind for years before then. In a 1999 interview with the New York Times, he predicted that Minority Report was going to be his most cynical feature yet. This was due to the film’s premise.
Minority Report was about members of a special organization tasked to stop future crimes. It was adapted by a story from author Philip K. Dick, with Cruise introducing both the book and the script to Spielberg.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” continued the academy’s mini-genre revolution by becoming a sci-fi/fantasy movie to win not just Best Picture, but seven Oscars in total. It is another move by the academy that shows they are embracing genre films more and more after decades of shunning sci-fi and fantasy pictures that deserved far more recognition than they deserve. With that in mind, here are 10 sci-fi flicks of old that deserved the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” treatment.

Regulars on the Farscape subreddit will already know that Owen Davies has completed his epic AI Remaster Project, releasing all 88 episodes – plus the two-part Peacekeeper Wars miniseries – to YouTube in 4K.
Upscaling the existing Farscape 15th Anniversary Blu-ray footage was undertaken using the commercially available Topaz Video AI software. However, Davies – who works as a Freelance digital designer/multimedia developer – balks at referring to it as a mere “upscale.” A lot of highly technical preparation is done on the Blu-ray footage, such as sharpening the image, correcting the contrast, and retouching the color grading to take it with a breath of a full remaster.
All in all, the process has taken him four to five hours per episode and I challenge you to find fault with the results in this side-by-side comparison video:

It's fairly common for directors to spend years in-between projects, and one would think that finishing Stanley Kubrick's vision for 2001's "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" would call for a much-needed vacation. But in 2002, Steven Spielberg was on a roll. In the same year, he released two distinct films featuring two different, massive A-list stars. In June, Tom Cruise played the leading man in Spielberg's sci-fi blockbuster, "Minority Report." And in December, Leonardo DiCaprio took on the role of Frank Abagnale, Jr. in "Catch Me If You Can," an ambitious semi-biographical drama where DiCaprio played opposite Tom Hanks. Both films were critical and financial successes, becoming the 10th and 11th highest-grossing films of 2002 respectively.
Perhaps most impressively, in 2001, Spielberg was able to accomplish production on these films while writing term papers to earn his Bachelor's Degree from Cal State Long Beach, something he committed himself to doing to honor his...

For someone who is the most financially successful filmmaker of all time and reshaped Hollywood, Steven Spielberg is weirdly ignored by the Academy Awards. The man has a cavalcade of masterpieces under his belt, yet he has not won a Best Director trophy since 1999 with "Saving Private Ryan" or Best Picture since 1994 with "Schindler's List," which also happens to be the only film of his to have won that award. More time has elapsed between the release of his first theatrical feature film, "The Sugarland Express," and "Schindler's List" than between "Saving Private Ryan" and today, and in those 24 years, Spielberg has yet to display another Oscar on his mantle.
This year could have been the year to rectify that with "The Fabelmans." When his heavily autobiographical film won the Audience Award at this past year's Toronto International Film Festival, we all thought it was finally going to be his time again.

Even Steven Spielberg has to admit that one of his films is “pretty perfect”.
The director has made 34 films since 1971, many of which are considered classics. These include Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
However, Spielberg says that he finds it tought to re-watch his movies – but there’s one he has revisisted that he knows is undeniably excellent.
“I don’t look a lot at my movies after I’ve made them,” he told The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, adding: “I don’t look back too often but every once in a while I’ll see a movie with my kids.”
He explained that he wanted to “comfort my kids when they watched Et for the first time,” adding: “I don’t want them to see Et without dad sitting there – especially with the scary parts at the beginning.”

The end of Robert Zemeckis' 1994 mega-hit "Forrest Gump" saw the titular character, played by Tom Hanks, presented with a young son he didn't know he had. Forrest — "not a smart man" as he says — had spent the bulk of the film attempting to declare his love for his childhood sweetheart Jenny (Robin Wright), who was often kept out of his life by their differing circumstances. He went off to war, she went off to protest. Forrest was finally able to state his love out loud when they found themselves in each other's company again as adults. A few years thereafter, after yet another separation, Jenny returned again, this time with six-year-old Forrest Jr. The film ends with Forrest and his son living together. Jenny, sadly, dies from complications with AIDS.

Steven Spielberg, the 76-year-old director-producer-humanitarian, was honored at this year’s Berlin Film Festival with a lifetime achievement award. His most recent project, “The Fabelmans,” is currently in the running for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture (listing himself and frequent collaborators Tony Kushner and Kristie Macosko Krieger as producers), Best Director, Best Actress (Michelle Williams), Best Supporting Actor (Judd Hirsch), Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score (John Williams), and Best Production Design (Rick Carter and Karen O’Hara).
The theme of antisemitism, which runs through much of “The Fabelmans,” was clearly on Spielberg’s mind as he took the podium. “This honor has particular meaning for me because I’m a Jewish director,” the “Schindler’s List” and “Munich” director said. “I’d like to believe that this is a small moment in a much larger, ongoing effort of healing the broken places of history–what Jews call Tikkun Olam, the...
