Saturday Night Live skits have given us some of the funniest and most enjoyable movies of their eras. Ok, there aren’t many – we’re really mostly talking about The Blues Brothers, the Wayne’s World double feature and MacGruber – but what’s there is choice comedy. On the other side, we have crap like It’s Pat, The Ladies Man and Stuart Saves His Family, all proving that just because something works for five minutes doesn’t mean it can sustain 90. Take another recurring skit, Debbie Downer, for another example, who Rachel Dratch turned into a signature character in more than a half-dozen appearances. Thankfully such a movie never happened – something that Dratch is perfectly fine with.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Rachel Dratch recognized that while the character stands as one of her greatest contributions to SNL, she just wouldn’t have the legs to make it on the big screen.

Jerry Lewis was the comedic legend who starred in dozens of films, remaining active until his death at 91 in 2017. But how many of those titles, many of which he also wrote and directed, remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest movies, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1926, Lewis initially gained attention as one half of the team Martin and Lewis, opposite future Rat Packer Dean Martin. The combination of Martin as the lady-killing straight man and Lewis as the spastic goofball started as a night club act and a radio program. They appeared in 17 films together before their breakup in 1956.
He went on to star in, direct, and write a series of slapstick comedies laced with hints of sentimentality. In titles such as “The Bellboy” (1960), “The Ladies Man” (1961), “The Nutty Professor” (1963), and “The Patsy” (1964), Lewis played a lovable, rubber-faced dork who won our hearts while grating on our nerves.

Plot: Will Ferrell learns that one of his closest friends and collaborators is now trans. Unsure of the ground rules in the next stage of their relationship, the two drive from New York to Los Angeles together and reconnect.
Review: Will & Harper is a gentle, often hilarious documentary about two friends reconnecting after one comes out as trans. The fact that one of the friends is Will Ferrell made it a must-see for me at Sundance. But, it has a lot of resonance beyond its showbiz aspects, with it a nuanced portrait of a life in transition. It starts with essentially being about how the world views Ferrell’s friend, Harper, but eventually, it becomes more about how she views herself.
It’s a complex question because Harper Steele made her transition later in life, with her being sixty-one as the movie starts. She’s interesting, having been the...

As comedian Will Ferrell walked across the magnificent stage of The Kennedy Center to accept the greatest honor an America funny person can receive, The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, something happened that made us all remember why he is getting this prestigious honor. The award instantly slipped from Will’s hilarious fingers, shattering this legendary humorist’s bust all over the floor. An obvious gag, that was so damn fitting to what Will represents in the history of the art of doing silly stuff. Without breaking character for a second, Will hilariously tries to pick up the pieces as the world just sat back and laughed… but not laughing at him, we were laughing with him. The appeal of Will Ferrell comes from his innocent “I don’t give a f*ck” attitude that elevates simple stupid jokes to performance art. As Mr. Ferrell once said, “What I...

Stefon Zelesky — movie star?
Seth Meyers said this week that a movie based on Bill Hader’s popular Saturday Night Live character was discussed but scrubbed, leaving the club kid who appeared on the late-night staple often from 2008-13, and a couple of times after, to linger only in fans’ memory. And YouTube (see below).
In an interview for Las Culturistas, the podcast hosted by comic actor Matt Rogers and SNL‘s Bowen Yang, the Late Night host said he would have had a small part in the pic but that his “Weekend Update” anchor would have died early on — after a long night of partying with Stefon. So someone else would have had to co-star.
“There was a moment in time where the idea of a Stefon script was being discussed,” he said. “This was not a scene that was written, but I did have a pitch for myself...

Nineteen years later, Korobkina has launched a podcast called Rise Up & Fix It, which she hosts with her producing partner Ingrid J. Monday.

Wayne’s World director Penelope Spheeris is setting the record straight about rumored clashes with star Mike Myers on the set of 1992’s Wayne’s World — the first scripted feature for both of them.
“It was not an uncomfortable set,” Spheeris, 77, tells THR‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast. “Mike is hypoglycemic, so if he got low blood sugar he could get grumpy. So, big deal. I worked with Richard Pryor and Albert Brooks. They’ll cause you a heart attack.”
Spheeris says the discord began after filming had wrapped and the finished film was screened for test audiences. Myers’ father died at that time, so he returned to Canada for the funeral and missed those early screenings.
“I got great audience reaction in the testing setting. That’s when the crap hit the fan,” Spheeris recalls. “He wasn’t there to witness the incredible audience reaction and look at the test...

Since 1980, the weekly sketch show "Saturday Night Live" has produced eleven feature films based on its characters. "The Blues Brothers" was released in 1980 and remains one of our favorite "SNL" movies (though it's debatable how much of an "SNL" movie it is with no Lorne Michaels attached). It was another 12 years before another "SNL" movie came out, and it was worth the wait. The 1990s were the heyday for a proliferation "SNL" movies, beginning in 1992 with the beloved "Wayne's World."
The rest of the decade was hit or miss for "SNL" movies in terms of quality. We saw the return of Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtain in the heartwarming "Coneheads." Will Ferrell got his first leading role with "A Night at the Roxbury." There was an awful "Blues Brothers" sequel for some reason. And does anyone even remember they made an entire movie with Julia Sweeney's androgynous character, "It's...

Last week, we posted a list of five forgotten actors we’d like to see make a comeback, and the reaction was so strong, we decided to post a bunch more! There’s a ton of forgotten actors from the 80s and 90s we’d love to have back on our screen, so let’s take a look at another group of them today.
Kelly Jo Minter
Let’s start with a horror favorite and a regular presence on the convention circuit, Kelly Jo Minter. Most folks will remember her from A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, The People Under the Stairs, and a slew of television series appearances. She was everywhere for a while in the 1980s and 1990s, then projects started becoming further and further apart, with nothing between 2008 and 2019, then nothing since. This actress is beloved by many people, and she should get a new part,...

In what can be called movie geek comfort food, Battle: Los Angeles and Krull have become cult favorites over the years. Why? You can watch either movie while doing other things keeping an extra eye on the screen, have devout fans who can recite the dialogue verbatim and will defend both movies to the end. Guilty pleasures, yes, cult status, definitely.
Even HBO Max has it listed as such.

April is about to be a good month for returning HBO and HBO Max properties.
HBO Max’s list of releases for April 2022 features three hotly anticipated seasons of television. The Flight Attendant, which helped launch HBO Max as a viable spot for good dramedy in 2020, premieres its second season on April 21. That will be followed by another go-around for the sci-fi comedy Made for Love on April 28. Of course, the big ticket item this month is something that HBO Max inherited from its cable cousin. Barry season 3 will continue the story of hitman-turned-actor Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) on April 24.
The TV offerings run much deeper than just returning shows this month. April 7 sees the arrival of Tokyo Vice, a sprawling crime drama with some episodes directed by Michael Mann. The series stars Ansel Elgort as an American journalist embedding himself in Tokyo’s criminal underground in the late ’90s.

Two actresses who appeared on screen with movie icon and comedian Jerry Lewis have accused him of sexual harassment and assault, including claims that he fondled one of the women and began masturbating in front of the other.
Karen Sharpe (now Karen Kramer), who starred with Lewis in “The Disorderly Order” (1964), and Hope Holiday, who starred with Lewis in “The Ladies Man” (1961) and is known for parts in “The Apartment,” each accused Lewis of misconduct as part of a documentary short film published in Vanity Fair. Lewis died in 2017 at the age of 91.

Two former co-stars of Jerry Lewis, actresses Karen Sharpe and Hope Holiday, have accused the late comic legend and actor of sexual assault and harassment in a new feature published by Vanity Fair. The interviews were conducted by documentarians Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick, the filmmakers who tackled sexual abuse allegations against Woody Allen in the HBO documentary series “Allen v. A new short documentary and exposé published by Vanity Fair accuses Jerry Lewis of sexual harassment and assault. The interviews with actresses such as Karen Sharpe and Hope Holiday were conducted by Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering, the duo who tackled Mia Farrow’s allegations against Woody Allen in the HBO documentary series “Allen v Farrow” and the directors of the Oscar-nominated “The Hunting Ground.” Lewis was one of the most popular performers in the world in the 1950s and ’60s, first as part of a comic team with Dean Martin and later as the star of hits such as “The Nutty Professor” and “Cinderfella.” He died in 2017 at the age of 91.
Sharpe met the actor during his commercial zenith. She was cast as Lewis’ love interest in the 1964 comedy “The Disorderly Orderly.” The actress said she was being fitted for costumes in Lewis’ office when he ordered everyone but her out of the room.

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. Meadows most recently starred as Principal John Glascott on both seasons of ABC’s The Goldbergs’ spinoff Schooled, the same recurring character he has played on The Goldbergs since the series’ launch in 2013.
On the big screen he was most recently seen in a supporting role in Netflix’s Hubie Halloween. He also co-stars in No Activity, which premieres its fourth season on Paramount+ next month.

Every now and then, we’ll see a new movie based on characters from the sketches of Saturday Night Live. We got MacGruber in 2010, and before that it was The Ladies Man in 2000. So here we are in a new decade, and it’s about time we had another SNL movie. Though there’s nothing official […]

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history.Speaking after her tragic death at the age of 33, President Franklin D. Roosevelt testified to the legacy of Carole Lombard. “She is and always will be a star,” he stated in 1942, “one that we shall never forget, nor cease to be grateful to.” Although the president’s words were at least in part influenced by Lombard’s recent patriotic zeal (she died in a plane crash after traveling to sell war bonds), his comments resonated throughout the country, especially Hollywood, where the actress’s impact had been progressively pronounced for years. Her films were like a breath of fresh air to Depression-era audiences, adding silver screen levity to individuals seeking a brief reprieve from day-to-day hardship. By contrast, Lombard’s cinematic sphere was often one of glamour, romance, and, above all,...

A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.
Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. Hulu original film The Ultimate Playlist of Noise premieres on Jan. 15 and TV series Everyone is Doing Great arrives on Jan. 13.

Hulu is kicking off the new year in style next month, with January set to deliver a ton of fresh titles to the Disney-owned streaming service. There’s a bunch of original content landing throughout the first few weeks of 2021, but probably the highlight is the incredible number of classic movies that are going up on the site on New Year’s Day. Whether you’re in the mood for iconic comedies, dramas, animated efforts or sci-fi flicks, there’s something for you on the way.
There are well over 100 films being added to Hulu’s library on January 1st, so let’s just pick out a few notable titles. The full Austin Powers trilogy is among them, and if you can’t get enough of Mike Myers, the first Shrek likewise becomes available. For dramas, there’s Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin, Johnny Depp vehicle Donnie Brasco and Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show.

The child killer on The Outsider has infected our dreams for centuries. We take an in-depth look at the real life inspiration for El Coco.
If the mystery at the center core of HBO’s The Outsider is keeping you up at night, there's a good reason. It may be a part of our collective subconscious.
The series is based on the book The Outsider by Stephen King. The scripts are written by Richard Price, who wrote HBO's The Night Of and The Deuce, as well as novels like The Wanderers, Clockers, and Ladies Man. King is the long-reigning master of the macabre, while Price keeps things real and captures the mundane details which make the distant mystery personal. The two literary legends combined create what could be a perfect, leisurely paced, episode of The X-Files. That cult classic series featured such monsters-of-the-week as Bigfoot, the Jersey Devil,...

Jerry Lewis would’ve celebrated his 93rd birthday on March 16, 2019. The comedic legend starred in dozens of films, remaining active until his death at 91 in 2017. But how many of those titles, many of which he also wrote and directed, remain classics? In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest movies, ranked worst to best.

Part of the Jerry Lewis tribute A Mubi Jerrython. Writer, director, star of stage, screen and television, humanitarian, producer, and total filmmaker—Jerry Lewis was all of the above. For the first six years of his career he was also a professional lip syncher. At age twelve, desperate to follow his parents on stage, Jerry began developing a “record act.” A staple on the lower rungs of the Borscht Belt, burlesque, vaudeville, and nightclubs, record acts (a.k.a. dummy acts) were cheap and easy: they consisted of a performer or performers miming away to recordings. Always considered pretty corny, they were the poor stepchildren on the theatrical bills, but there were plenty of budding comics who broke into show business that way. Jerry Van Dyke was another newbie who started his career doing record acts, and much later Andy Kaufman would put his own spin on it mouthing only...

While Chadwick Boseman will be most seen as a superhero on the big screen, he’s no stranger to playing real-life icons. After Jackie Robinson and James Brown, he’s portrayed Thurgood Marshall for a new historical drama this fall, aptly titled Marshall, and now the first trailer has arrived.
Directed by Reginald Hudlin (The Ladies Man, House Party) in his first film in 15 years, the story tells the early days of the man who would go on to sit on the Supreme Court, as he got experience with criminal law. Set for a mid-October release, this one seems primed to debut at Tiff, so check back for our take in a few months.
Also starring Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, Dan Stevens, Sterling K. Brown, and James Cromwell, check out the trailer below.
Long before he sat on the United States Supreme Court or claimed victory in Brown v. Board of Education, Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) was a young rabble-rousing attorney for the NAACP. The new motion picture, Marshall, is the true story of his greatest challenge in those early days – a fight he fought alongside attorney Sam Friedman (Josh Gad), a young lawyer with no experience in criminal law: the case of black chauffeur Joseph Spell (Sterling K. Brown), accused by his white employer, Eleanor Strubing (Kate Hudson), of sexual assault and attempted murder.
Marshall opens on October 13, 2017.

Wayne’s World, the blockbuster comedy starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey based on the now-classic Saturday Night Live recurring sketch, turns 25 on Tuesday, Feb. 14 -- Happy Valentine’s Day! -- and we’re still in love.

Ok, so Screaming Mimi, based on eccentric cult crime/sci-fi scribe Fredric Brown's novel, is at best a hot mess of a film, more often only a lukewarm one. But you somehow can't tear your eyes away from it: it's a slow-motion car wreck with musical numbers.Anita Ekberg, just ahead of her elevation to iconic status by Federico Fellini, is cantilevered into the role of Virginia, traumatized by a knife-wielding psycho while taking a shower (yes, the scene anticipates Psycho, and yes, it shows that the same elements can be used in a lame, ineffective way). The staff of the asylum from which the maniac escaped then feel it only their duty to take Anita into their care, where she meets the controlling, Svengali-like Dr. Greenwood, who becomes her lover and business manager when she returns to her life as an exotic dancer in the big city.Most...

It is hard to believe that creator Lorne Michaels’s legendary late night variety show Saturday Night Live has been kicking around the American airways for four decades and still remarkably standing on its hind legs even until this very day. No doubt that SNL has shaped the pop cultural minds of its avid viewers for forty-plus years on the small screen. Pre-credit sequence. When we left things, Coyopa had just weakened a weak tribe by booting the otherwise unappealing John Rocker. "We weren't winning anyways, so..." Alec says. "Kudos to the team," says Baylor, who thinks they'll be better with John Rocker's attitude removed. Dale admits that he let his social game slide and suspects he's toast if they lose again. Dale had a social game at some point? In like flint. Monkey! Fiddling around near the fire pit, Natalie finds her tribe's missing flint, though lost since the first challenge win, which makes Jon feel a bit better about himself. Drew, however, laments the fishing gear they gave up for the second flint. But Drew, who learned nothing from previous negotiations with Jeff Probst, thinks he may be able to convince Probst to give them another shot at that fishing gear for one of their flints. Oh, Drew.
