For years, Ubisoft has been leading the charge toward what I like to call the Sandbox Singularity – the point at which all big-budget games are sandbox action-adventures distinguished only by their settings. Characterized by innumerable pointless collectibles, protagonists focus-tested into oblivion, and either map-revealing towers or liberation sidequests, the Sandbox Singularity has been consuming venerable franchises (Splinter Cell) and promising newcomers (Watch_Dogs) alike. With this in mind, my immediate reaction to the announcement of Knight vs. Viking vs. Samurai brawler For Honor was delight; it’s a new IP from Ubisoft, but it’s unlike anything they (or anyone) have released in the past. After actually getting my hands on the product, that reaction is still there, but it’s tainted by disappointment in the game’s token campaign and the inevitable imperfections of such a large project.
No single aspect makes For Honor the unique experience that it is.

Ted Hope used to talk a lot. In the ’90s, Hope and business partner James Schamus’ Good Machine produced major films from indie stalwarts such as Ang Lee (“The Ice Storm”) and Todd Solondz (“Happiness”). In the digital age, Hope became a proselytizer for Diy filmmaking, even when he moved away from producing himself. He briefly ran the San Francisco Film Society in 2012 before taking on a job as CEO of streaming site Fandor.
Then last year, he was hired as the Head of Motion Picture Production for Amazon Studios. And that was when the talking stopped. Tapped by Amazon Studios head Roy Price shortly after Hope published his how-to tome, “Hope for Film,” the garrulous producer was muzzled by corporate PR.

Experts forecasted the future of the consumer virtual-reality market at the annual event held as part of Lff.
The virtual reality content market is set to explode in scope and volume in the coming year, a panel of Vr pioneers told Power to the Pixel’s conference yesterday (Oct 14).
Alex Bowker, developer relations lead at Samsung Electronics, said the Vr content market was projected to be worth $8.4bn by 2018 while headset sales were expected to bring in an annual $2.4bn.
“The content grows to be worth two to three times the hardware sales,” said Bowker.
“At the moment it’s all about immersive experiences that you just can’t have but we’re also seeing lots of games, training and educational tools and cinematic works, like Felix and Paul’s Cirque du Soleil, as well as concerts and sporting events – it opens up a lot of experiences.”

The Rainbow Six beta is only a few days into its release and already it’s drawing a lot of contention from within the fanbase. Whilst almost certainly a return to form for the franchise, long loved gameplay aspects from previous entries have been omitted from the pseudo-reboot, and not entirely to the benefit of the package being offered.
For those unfamiliar with Rainbow Six, Siege provides a welcome entry to the series. The learning curve is as steep as ever for those who’ve rarely ventured outside of Call of Duty and its ilk, but the more cautionary gameplay style is bound to resonate with gamers left unfazed by the typical annual Fps offerings of the past five years – just make sure you have a competent bunch of squad mates to take along with you.

Derick Dillard definitely has his hands full with baby Israel David, his 3-week-old son with wife Jill.
In a blog post titled "#NewDad," the 19 Kids and Counting star writes about his "initiation into fatherhood," which includes baby spit-up, dirty diapers, crying and lots of late nights.
"My son Israel nursed 20 min, threw up 4 times, and went through 3 diapers … all within the span of about an hour and a half last night," he writes.
Dillard even goes so far as to liken his foray into fatherhood to his frat days, saying, "In college I was in fraternities, and I compare my...

Three grandmas try weed for the first time out of a vaporizer they think is a giant dildo. The Internet brings us wonderful things, friends. Paula, Dorothea, and Deirdre (of course those are their names) have never tried the reefer, so the fine folks over at Cut Video hook them up. The results are wonderful. Here are our 9 favorite moments from these marijuana-loving mamas... 1. Their reasons for never trying it before: "We had our cigarettes and our cocktails, and we were happy." 2. The learning curve: Like a grandkid setting up their first Yahoo account, seeing inexperienced grandmas try to handle a bong is just all kinds of adorable. 3. They're fast learners:...

The road to EA Sports Ufc has been a long and winding one, to say the least. In fact, there was a time where Ufc president Dana White declared that he was “at war” with Electronic Arts over their refusal to make a game and instead took the brand to Thq and Yukes.
While they were toiling away with the Undisputed franchise, EA partnered with rival promotion Strikeforce to make EA Sports Mma. Then, after both Thq and Strikeforce went under, Dana and EA both realized that there was money to be made from the two working together and thus, we ended up here in 2014 with EA Sports Ufc.
In the world of mixed martial arts, the Ufc is a big fish in a medium-sized pond. While the sport may still be growing worldwide, the promotion features its best talent and EA Sports has done a solid job of bringing that to the game.

As a fan of the game Lemmings in its original form I remember the obsession of getting as many of the weird little creatures through the level as possible, though it was always fun to see how they could be killed. The aim though was to make it through the levels by utilising the skills that the suicidal little fools possessed. Now moving into the iPhone age we have Deadlings, a game featuring zombies that although in a more simplistic form are pretty much undead Lemmings.
Deadlings leads you into the game by helping you to understand just what your zombies can do. Whether it be running, having the ability to stick to walls and a few other tricks each zombie can help you to make it through the levels you’ll find in the game. The problem with these levels of course is they are designed to kill the moving corpses,...

It’s good to be Anna Chlumsky right now.
Shortly after giving birth to her first child in July, the actress got word that she received her first Emmy nomination for her role as Chief of Staff Amy Brookheimer on Veep, who spends her time trying to keep control of chaos magnet Selina Meyer, the Vice President of the United States, played by Emmy winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Alec Baldwin is in advanced discussions to host a weekly primetime show on MSNBC, according to a source familiar with the negotiations. As reported by Mediaite, Baldwin would get the 10 p.m. slot on Fridays. Baldwin, who’s had a long, fruitful relationship with NBC that extends to his seven seasons on 30 Rock and multiple appearances on Saturday Night Live, would seem like an ideal addition to MSNBC’s progressive politics. Articulate and pugnacious, Baldwin has frequently expressed his desire for an actual political career, and hosting a political talk show seems like an opportunity to play to both his strengths.

Hey, gamer! Yes, I’m talking to you! Do you like RPGs? How about strategy? How about dragons? How about jetpacks? How about Mass Effect? How about fantasy? How about World of Warcraft? How about dragons with jetpacks? How about wizards? How about lizards? How about guys with robotic limbs? How about imps? How about Risk? How about videogames? How about technology? How about entertainment? How about being alive on planet Earth? Are you a fan of breathing? Then you’ll love Divinity: Dragon Commander.
I won’t claim that the above was Larian Studios’ actual pitch for their newest role-playing strategy mashup, but it was hard not to feel that way at times while playing it. The concept of a Risk meets Mass Effect hybrid with the ability to actually take control of dragons in aerial combat and command your forces on the ground sounds like any self respecting gamer’s wet dream.

Street Fighter X Tekken for Ps Vita is everything you could want in a portable version of a console game. Unlike most of the titles that have arrived on the system before, almost nothing was sacrificed to bring the game unto the handheld. Street Fighter X Tekken even has some system specific features that utilize the Vita’s abilities. This version arrives about a half of a year after the console version, but does include a hefty Dlc bundle for absolutely free.
The core gameplay of Street Fighter X Tekken remains unchanged from its console counterpart, but for the benefit of those who are hearing of the game for the first time, here are some things you should know. The game pits the characters from Street Fighter and Tekken (and some guests), in a 2 vs. 2 style fighting game. After picking two characters, matches are won by the first person to...

Since 2003, Josh Schwartz has helped turn, among others, Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Mischa Barton, Rachel Bilson, Adam Brody, Penn Badgley, Zachary Levi and Chace Crawford into television stars. Now 36, the writer-producer behind "The O.C.," "Gossip Girl" and "Chuck" -- as well as, perhaps, the mid-decade success of Death Cab For Cutie -- has taken his talents to the multiplex for the teen comedy "Fun Size."
Out on Oct. 26, "Fun Size" is a one-crazy-night movie about what happens when a high school senior named Wren (Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice) loses her kid brother on Halloween night. Aided by a snappy best friend (Jane Levy, doing her best Summer Roberts impression) and a love-lorn nerd (Thomas Mann), Wren must find her brother before her mother (Chelsea Handler) gets home for the night. I remember watching that episode and wondering if I could do that. Ostrowski admits that that kind of savings is hard to copy for the average person. "Searching for all the deals is time-consuming," she said.
It took Ostrowski nearly two days of planning and six hours in the store, according to the episode. She walked out with nine shopping carts, including 218 boxes of pasta. I don't have that kind of time. And I will never eat that much ziti.
But I wanted to see if I could at least cut my grocery bills. So I called up Ostrowski and a few other coupon experts to pick their brains. I planned to test out their tips at my local Target store.

Las Vegas — Martin Scorsese has become so enamored with 3-D filmmaking that he expects to use the technology in all his future projects.
The Academy Award-winning director of "The Departed" told a crowd of theater owners at the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas on Wednesday that he wishes his landmark films "Raging Bull" and "Taxi Driver" had been three-dimensional. Scorsese is so convinced of the power of 3-D, he said he only saw "Hugo," his first 3-D movie released to critical acclaim last year, once in 2-D.
"There is something that 3-D gives to the picture that takes you into another land and you stay there and it's a good place to be," he said.
Scorsese spoke at a filmmaking panel alongside director Ang Lee, who won an Oscar in 2006 for the gay cowboy love story "Brokeback Mountain." Scorsese and Lee are among a growing crop of prominent directors who...

A couple make small talk at dinner, interspersed with flashes of what is about to befall them. Their home is invaded and the husband is killed presumably during the attack. It was apparent their marriage is over. Flack (Eddie Cahill) says the wife called for help which must have been a feat itself considering she was bound, gagged and in the bedroom. There were two intruders and both wore ski masks, what we'd call balaclavas. The daughter Megan, (Heather Sossaman) was at the movie theatre. Mac (Gary Sinise) questions all the houses in the neighbourhood to find out "why the attackers chose this one?" Lindsay (Anna Belknap) processes the Cs as we get more flashes of the events from the night. She finds a ski mask under the husband, Ron's (Vincent Ventresca) Db and the empty box that was delivered. Jo (Sela Ward) finds a hair from a slashed painting.

On December 30, 2011 at Ufc 141, Brock Lesnar entered the octagon for the eighth time against Alistair Overeem (36-11). Two minutes, twenty six seconds, and a liver kick later, the fight and Lesnar’s career were over.
In the post-match interview with Rogan, Lesnar humbly declared his retirement after two tough years of illness, surgery, and successive losses. He was an Ncaa champion, a professional wrestler, a failed football player, and now a retired cage fighter.
Its now our job to figure out what Brock and his short, but enigmatic career actually meant.

Brock is a free style wrestler. Or perhaps I should say, “was” because the last time he wrestled competitively prior to joining the Ufc was way back in 2000 when he was an All-American and National Champion for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. It looks like Dan will be walking you through the finer points of combat in the Namco Bandai/Capcom fighting mashup.
Over the weekend, Namco Bandai and Capcom released a dozen new images from the Street Fighter X Tekken training mode. While this wouldn't normally be much of a thing ("Yay, training screens," you might say to yourself) I am intrigued by the level of instruction here. Essentially, it looks like the mode will be a bit more instructional and objective-based than those found in recent Capcom brawlers. In particular, from the looks of it, Street Fighter X Tekken will not only take the time to break down the basics of punching and kicking but actually delve into some of the broader elements of timing, throw escapes, etc..
Selfishly, this is the kind of thing I love seeing in a fighting game. The learning curve can be a bit steep...

Chicago – When talking about sports stateside, it is pretty common to discuss the major four: football, baseball, basketball, and hockey. Even golf and tennis come up frequently. One sport that really hasn’t taken off is soccer. Maybe you have to call it football to be obsessed with the sport, but soccer tends to be pretty low on the average American sportswatcher’s list of favorites. However, as international sales are just as important to developers, there is still a major market for the soccer video game. In fact, it is the top-selling sports genre in games.

Jurassic Park the Ultimate Trilogy Finally Arrives On Blu-ray HD
I have the Star Wars franchise on Blu-ray, the Back to the Future Blu-ray trilogy and now I can add the Jurassic Park trilogy to my collection. The biggest gem of the series is the first movie, I say this because the follow-up films just never made it as good movies. It is also the filmmaking evolution that made the first Jurassic Park so special, the combination of CGI (unheard of at the time), puppeteering (the amazing Stan Winston studios) and Go-Motion (Phil Tippett’s wonderful contribution). Watching the Blu-ray there is some amazing special features that help those of us in between 20-30 that caught this first film of the CGI blockbuster universe remember what the old school approach was. I still can’t get over how real the dinosaurs looked and felt in the film, like I could...

Watching the Blu-ray there is some amazing special features that help those of us in between 20-30 that caught this first film of the CGI blockbuster universe remember what the old school approach was. I still can’t get over how real the dinosaurs looked and felt in the film, like I could...

Carmine Dominik Giovinazzo was born on August 24, 1973 and grew up on Staten island. He is 5' 9". His mother is Nancy and father is Dominik, for who he is middle-named. His father was also a policeman, as are his sister, Alise Varela and brother-in-law, Will. Thus it was only fitting he should follow suit and become a detective too, albeit only in a TV show, CSI: NY (TV). Carmine commented he didn't want to pursue that career and it was left to his sister to follow in his father's footsteps. His family is originally from Naples, Italy. Carmine is of Norwegian and English ancestry too. He describes himself as half Italian from Calabria. His mother's side of the family are from Norway. "I think there's a bit of Bristol, England in me too. It's a great mix." His looks are more Norwegian than Italian with his blue eyes (the bluest of...

Australia’s screen professionals must be free to practice their skills anywhere in the world, but how do we stop this healthy career development from becoming a dangerous brain drain? Miguel Gonzalez reports.
If we were to make a list of all the Australian screen practitioners who have made it overseas, it would be a very long list indeed. It would probably start with the A-list creatives everybody knows, followed by the more anonymous and numerous executives, directors, producers, editors, cinematographers, VFX artists and technicians working all over the world.
While it is to be expected that many – if not all – industry practitioners would seek to expand their horizons and work internationally at some point in their careers to reach other markets, work in other systems and cultures and develop new skills, leaving Australia should not be an act of professional desperation.

Back in January, we brought you the news that Andy Serkis (Rise of the Apes) had officially joined the cast of The Hobbit to reprise his role as Gollum / Smeagol in the highly anticipated prequel to director Peter Jackson’s epic Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
Now, THR reports that not only will Serkis be acting and performing motion capture, Serkis has also been appointed second unit director. Check out what Serkis had to say about his new job below.
“I think I understand Peter’s sensibility and we have a common history of understanding Middle Earth. A lot of the crew from The Lord of the Rings was returning to work on The Hobbit. There is really a sense of Peter wanting people around him who totally understand the material and the work ethic.”
Serkis went onto talk about his directorial duties, and added that Gollum will be recognizable to fans of the franchise.

Peter Jackson has his wingman on the set of The Hobbit movies, as Gollum himself, Mr Andy Serkis, takes on second unit directing duties…
Andy Serkis is a man of many talents. While known primarily to most for his astonishing work in bringing Gollum to the screen in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, he's also set up a motion capture studio and undertaken directing work.
Currently, he's reprising the role of Gollum in Peter Jackson's pair of movies of The Hobbit. But it's now also been revealed that he's going to be the second unit director on the films, too.
That's no small task. And while Serkis will be tackling some of the motion capture work associated with the film, he's revealed that that's far from all he'll be doing.
Talking to Heat Vision, he said, "It is wide ranging and encompasses a lot of directing aspects of filmmaking and story.

Playing Gollum wont be the only job that Andy Serkis will have in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit. The actor will also serve as the second unit director of the two films that will be in production over the next 14 months. These films have got to be so much fun to be a part of. Serkis had this to say to say in a statement regarding his new job:
I think I understand Peter’s sensibility and we have a common history of understanding Middle Earth. A lot of the crew from The Lord of the Rings was returning to work on The Hobbit. There is really a sense of Peter wanting people around him who totally understand the material and the work ethic.

In the summer of 2009, EA and Dice took a bit of a risk and released "Battlefield 1943." Although it was released on Xbla and Psn, it wasn't what you'd normally expect from a downloadable game, offering the sort of Fps multiplayer depth that we had seen from previous entries in the series, just in a slightly smaller package. The risk paid off. "1943" was not only a hit, but it introduced new fans to the franchise, just in time for the release of "Battlefield: Bad Company 2." Now EA has released a Vietnam-themed expansion for "BC2," but has the franchise well gone dry or does this trip into the jungle fill it to the brim once more?
The Basics
"Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam" simply takes all of the core gameplay components of the standard "BC2" multiplayer experience and throws in period-appropriate weapons, vehicles and maps. For $15, you're getting four new maps (soon to...

For years, fans of racing sims have had a particularly strange conundrum. Their entire world has essentially been boiled down into two titles, the "Gran Turismo" series and the "Forza Mortorsport" line, but one of those (the former) has been so exceptional that nobody really minds. The best racing sim series out there returns with "Gran Turismo 5," the title's first entry in six years after a parade of near-disasters as well as its first PS3 exclusive and the first to feature a number of new licenses (including Nascar, a clear nod to American racing enthusiasts for what is otherwise a very Euro-centric game). But is "Gran Turismo 5" merely a "Madden"-esque roster upgrade (more cars and more tracks) or does it reinvent the wheel?
The Basics
"Gran Turismo 5" is all about numbers. After six years, they've delivered over 1,000 cars, 26 locations and 71 tracks (not including the endless possibilities for customization for...

Jon Keeyes is the director behind the horror movie American Nightmare starring two legendary horror divas, Debbie Rochon and Brinke Stevens. With American Nightmare, Jon Keeyes created a low budget indie slasher that was accessible and commercial, yet a bit edgy and different. It featured Debbie Rochon in the leading role as a psychopathic killer who stalks a group of friends one Halloween night bringing their worst fears to life. American Nightmare proved that Rochon just isn't another pretty face, but a force to be reckoned with. She turned in a performance that was loud and in your face, but also subtle and naunced. No easy combination to pull off! There has been talks swirling in the air of a sequel and a possible tenth anniversary edition, but untill that day comes, we will have to wait in anticpation of Keeyes latest film, The Gathering, which is getting under way.

Chicago – The learning curve may be steep enough that casual gamers could get thrown off by a title that demands a lot of its players but once you get the hang of “NBA 2K11” it becomes one of the most addictive and accomplished sports games ever made. With an amazing depth of play matched by fluid detail in the pursuit of basketball realism, this is a fantastic release, A nearly perfect sports game.
Video Game Rating: 4.5/5.0
Of course, the big draw of “NBA 2K11” has been the unusual choice of cover star, one that seems to have been made both to appease fans who have long-wondered what it would be like to play some of the classic stars of the game in a modern setting as well as with the recognition that a lot of b-ball fans are a bit frustrated with today’s players. Could they really have put...

On May 15, Emmy Award–winning actor Holland Taylor ("Two and a Half Men") stepped onto the stage of the Galveston Opera House in what may turn out to be a career-defining role. With "Money, Marbles and Chalk," Taylor presented a workshop of a one-woman play about one of the most charismatic figures in American political history: former governor of Texas Ann Richards. Richards was launched to political stardom at the 1988 Democratic Convention when she delivered the keynote address in which she famously skewered then President George H.W. Bush: "Poor George, he can't help himself. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth." Taylor is not only the star of the show; she is also the creative force behind it. It started when she was driving home one evening. She recalls, "I literally pulled off the road. I was on a service road, my eyes frozen on the...

This is getting predictable. Travellers Tales comes along, take a successful movie franchise, turns it into a Lego-themed video game, I giggle my way through it like a six-year old, get obsessive about completing both the game and the vast array of side challenges and bonus content, finally get some sleep, persuade my wife not to divorce me, and then slap it with a five-star review.
The thing is though, the developers at Travellers Tales really know what they're doing. The Lego-based nostalgia – oh the lovely, plasticky rumble when a character gets reduced to bricks! – still packs considerable charm and the games are an interactive joy.
They're also tough as puzzlers go: expect a good few head-scratching moments (or searches for online walkthroughs) when, ahem, trying to get into the girls' toilet at Hogwarts (no, it's not like that,...

Spring training games are underway, and that means that baseball video games are also back in our gaming systems. I absolutely love America's pastime, and yet throughout my video game playing life I have never enjoyed a baseball video game. The balance just never seems to be right: Either it's too realistic (and thus sort of boring) or has too much of an arcade feel (and then doesn't authentic). "Major League Baseball 2K10" has some high points, but it won't convert anybody who hasn't played a bat-and-ball game since "Rbi Baseball."
The Basics
As they said in "Bull Durham," "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball." "2K10" is basically that, plus some augmented pitching controls, a stylish presentation and a home run derby.

For all the talk about narrative arcs, aesthetic razzle-dazzle and tricks and tropes borrowed from film, games are really about gameplay. And because of that, there's often nothing as satisfying as a title that simply delivers rock-solid mechanics that let you enjoy fundamental gaming tasks: running, jumping, toggling, searching, exploring, shooting.
It's an obvious yet often overlooked fact that games are best when they feature a control system that satisfyingly allows you to complete the tasks at hand. From "Pac-Man" to "Super Mario Bros." to "Halo," intuitive, straightforward controls can provide as much pleasure as any convoluted RPG story or intricate sports scheme. It's a truth that's been particularly beneficial to indie games, whose limited budgets often drive them to mine old-school genres for kicks rather than to reinvent the game mechanics wheel. What's broken about antiquated games aren't always their structures but, instead, their graphics and sound. With a...

“Worms 2: Armageddon” follows in the long tradition of “Worms” games that have been coming out for nearly 15 years now. It’s a 2D, turn-based strategy game where you control a team of cartoon worms armed to the teeth with grenades, rocket launchers and exploding sheep. The simple, almost-cute graphics hide a devious interior, though, as “Worms 2″ is incredibly deep and sophisticated from a strategy standpoint.

Team Customization
Apart from naming your team of four worms, “Worms 2: Armageddon” adds many additional layers of customization. You can pick from sound banks to change your worms’ voices, hats/colors to change their looks and graves to change their final resting places. The number of options means you can make a team based just about any pop culture reference you can think of. An “Ender’s Game” themed squadron with space helmets? Yes please!
