Le maréchal-ferrant (1895)

Here's a nice actuality film from director Louis Lumiere. When the film opens we see a couple horses as well as four men who are about to put shoes on them. On the far left side of the frame we see a blacksmith preparing the shoes. There's obviously nothing ground- breaking here but at the same time it's always interesting to watch these films and just see a moment in time. This here at least gives you a very good idea of a horse shop back in the day and we just get to see four people doing their jobs. Again, this film certainly didn't change the way cinema was done but it's interesting to watch today.

The Farrier

Le maréchal-ferrant (1895), or the Farrier (1895), is another Lumière film, produced in 1895, that probably wasn't released to paying audiences, until early 1896. It probably kept the 1895 tag, because it was shown to a test audience that year. The great thing about these old 19th century film productions are all the great questions, that come to the surface, when you see what is transpiring on the screen. Le maréchal-ferrant (1895), makes you wonder what the backgrounds are of the men in the film. What is their story? Is there just two guys doing the work, while the other two guys, try to keep the horse calm or are all the men trained in horseshoeing? Are they saying nice things to the horse to calm him down, that you can't hear, because it is a silent film? The scene is also framed perfectly, with great composition and atmosphere. A moment in history captured on film.

9.2 (A- MyGrade) = 9 IMDB.
