Docudrama on the life of Canadian politician William Lyon Mackenzie. Throughout the 1830s, he is expelled from parliament again and again, only to win overwhelmingly by-election again and again in his York, Upper Canada riding in being supported by the people in his attempt to overcome what he sees as the graft by the governing wealthy elite politicians. When the government proclaims him to be an enemy of the state, he is forced to flee to the United States. In exile, he faces a difficult life as he tries to eke out a living to support his family, which includes needing to provide for his seriously ailing daughter. However, the memory of Mackenzie by his supporters in Canada may be a powerful tool for reform.
