But Who Knows Where or When?
When is easy enough: it's from 1898, but where is a bit more difficult as a procession passes beneath some arch.... the print is blurred, alas. Judging by the list of works from James White and its position, it's on the West Coast, so I'll take a guess that it's San Francisco, but I could be wrong.
The positioning of the camera is pretty good for a James White picture. Mr. White had a habit of positioning his camera to show not the subject of his works, but the crowds surrounding them, or the railroad tracks over which the camera was passing rather than the scenery and action that was going on around the camera. In this one, a large float of some description trundles through the bottom half of the frame, while the top is dominated by a large arch. Like so many of the Edison actualities of this period, the only reason we have any sense of where the action is taking place is from the title.
