La Carrera Panamericana is a sports car enthusiast film . . . with a dash of Pink Floyd.

This film was made due to Gilmore's and Mason's love of sports cars and amazing road races, like La Carrera Panamericana and the Targa Florio.

I saw the film once in the mid 90's and loved it. I'm a car guy and a Pink Floyd fan, so even though there is some sweet exhaust noise and narration over the sound track, that's OK, because it is a sound track, not the focus of the film. Reproduction E-Type Jaguars were used and race at high speeds on closed roadways through Mexico. Great camera work with on-board shots and great footage of the local festivities, countryside and repairs along the journey. All of this with the euphoric sounds of Pink Floyd laid over it.

So, if you are not a fan of sport car racing, and you are looking for a Pink Floyd performance . . . don't bother looking for a copy. Yes looking. It is not readily available for purchase. Only sold in VHS in the early 90's, in a limited quantity, even the best known sellers of movies and motorsports don't offer it. I've seen a new VHS copy selling on e-bay for $130 US.

I can only hope that they get together and release it on DVD.

Race footage backed by music of Pink Floyd, interesting for die hard fans only

This 65-minute documentary about a cross-country race does little but show off some nice cars, two of them coincidentally driven by Pink Floyd's Nick Mason and David Gilmour. Apparently this was reason enough to fill up the soundtrack with Pink Floyd tunes (as if a reason is needed for that), and the flick does boast the Floyd's return after a long absence. Several new, never-before-available instrumentals crop up here, including "Pan Am Shuffle" and "Carrera Slow Blues". Unfortunately, the versions contained herein are cluttered with dialogue and interviews. Still, Mason and Gilmour seem to be having fun, and if you're a die hard Floyd fan, you may get a mild kick out of it. The music doesn't seem to be up to the caliber it was when Roger Waters was in the band, but it is still light-years better than most FM rock.
