“Miracle Workers: Dark Ages” gets to have the best of both worlds. There’s an episode-by-episode running gag involving one of the last names of its central characters, part of which is a word that has historically been unwelcome and unspoken on American TV. Over the course of the TBS anthology’s second season, not only does this character’s name get invoked over and over, but the unexpected part of that name eventually arrives emblazoned on banners for the entire medieval town to see.
And yet, for so many other points in this pre-Renaissance-set comedy, the rest of the stronger language gets bleeped out for basic cable. Much like the show has one foot in the present day and one over a millennium ago, there’s a unique flexibility that “Miracle Workers” enjoys that few other comedies can use to their advantage.
“Oh, bleeps are always funnier than actual curses,...

“Miracle Workers: Dark Ages” sees Steve Buscemi shift from playing God to a local excrement remover, and Daniel Radcliffe ditch his awkward angel for a soft-brained prince.
Given the malleable nature of the TBS anthology series, creator Simon Rich was presented with a blank canvas for Season 2. Rich made the decision to leave behind the polished halls of Heaven Inc. for the grimy streets of a medieval town, and radically change his entire cast of characters in the process. According to Rich, “the beauty” of the format is being able to pivot the series on a dime and explore whatever themes come naturally.
Whereas Season 1 of “Miracle Workers” was based on Rich’s 2012 novel “What in God’s Name” and dealt with love and fickle nature of life on earth, “Dark Ages” is based on an as-yet-unpublished short story and tackles the struggles of Geraldine Viswanathan and Radcliffe’s characters...

This Miracle Workers: Dark Ages review contains no spoilers.
One of the stranger aspects of our current TV landscape is watching the life expectancy of shows clearly conceived as limited series stretched out to fulfil the ever-present need for more content. A high-profile series like Big Little Lies, which continued beyond its source material to diminished returns in an unexpected second season, seems to be the go-to example, but there’s other series like The White Queen, The Young Pope, and True Detective that at least appeared to be one-and-done affairs that were brought back for more. In the case of a Fleabag, that can be a good thing, but other times you get an unnecessary continuation like Miracle Workers: Dark Ages.
It’s worth noting...

Miracle Workers producers Simon Rich and Steve Buscemi discuss going from heaven to the Dark Ages.
One of the first lines uttered in TBS’s Medieval comedy Miracle Workers: Dark Ages comes from young Alexandria Shitshoveler as she prepares to watch a public execution. After the executioner cheerfully cries “It’s time to kill a person!” Alexandria turns to her friend as asks “Do you ever feel like we’re living during a particularly bad period in history?”
That’s a question many modern viewers may bring with them into Miracle Workers: Dark Ages’ first episode. The show is set to premiere on January 28, six days into the Presidential impeachment hearings and who knows how many days after the latest terrifying climate change report. Alexandria’s query, however, is a helpful reminder that even though our era may not have the world “dark” in it (at least...
