An evening out on the town- 1900's style
Over a century ago, the Haymarket was an area of New York City known for its drinking, dancing, and loud and boisterous ragtime music. "The Haymarket", a Biograph production from 1903, shows what would happen nearly every night. I won't spoil it, but it will come as no surprise. The film was not shot in the actual Haymarket, but rather on a painted set in the cramped Biograph studios on841 Broadway, on 13th Street. While the sets are rather crude, the film has a sort of magic in the air that is almost indescribable; it's like peering into the night of some long ago forgotten time. I suppose thats what a lot of these early, pre Griffith Biograph films are; a time capsule. I'll give this one an 8/10.
