Just okay

Warning: Spoilers
Luz is walking about as her mother calls her to come home. However, instead of going home, she wanders about the empty town until she ultimately walks into a theater where she sees her life being played out on the screen. Inexplicably, she sits down on a bench and takes a nap. The ending, which occurs a bit later, is nice.

This is a decent but not particularly inspiring CG film. While the backgrounds were beautifully rendered, I was surprised how blocky the title character, Luz (called "Lucy" in the English language version), looked. In addition, the story was a bit vague and unsatisfying, though I suppose that there are some interesting interpretations to be had if you think about it. Frankly, I just didn't feel engaged enough to try.

Superficially engaging but the lack of clarity in the material was a big problem for me

Apparently straddling two worlds with one character, this film does have an air of Wizard of Oz to it in regards visual things such as the red shoes and the use of colour and black & white sections but that dos not mean I totally understood it. The young Lucy walks through a seemingly empty world, counting her steps as she goes. Her mother calls to her but she does not respond, heading instead away from the house. What specifically was happening wasn't clear and it was a shame because the actual delivery of this muddy tale was very strong.

The animation of Lucy betrays the budget of this film (understandable as a student piece) but it is still good and fits in well with a strong world around her. It is impressive and rather imaginatively created. The use of music and the rather downbeat tone to the film is very well matched and it was these factors that I felt drew me into it emotionally even if the material didn't. Of course it was to no avail as the material didn't come in under me to provide a base, so as the music and world faded, so did my attachment, meaning it produced no lasting effect on me beyond the credits. Which is a shame because it is still an engaging and worthwhile short film.
