When "The Shield" premiered on FX in March 2002, it was entering a prestige-tv landscape that was still relatively young. "The Sopranos" had just begun its HBO run three years earlier, and AMC shows like "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" — with protagonists cut from the same antihero cloth as Tony Soprano — had not yet arrived on cable TV. And they might never have done so if "The Shield" hadn't paved the way first. Michael Chiklis won an Emmy Award for his portrayal of corrupt cop Vic Mackey in season 1 of "The Shield," but for series creator Shawn Ryan and company, it took some convincing to even get "The Shield" on the air, and there was a lot riding on its success.
In 2022, for the 20th anniversary of "The Shield," Entertainment Weekly dug into the background of the show with an oral history featuring Chiklis, Ryan, and other cast and crew members.

FX is known for its edge and unpredictability. But one of the secrets to the brand’s success over the past 25 years has been management stability.
Under the leadership of FX Networks and FX Prods. chairman John Landgraf, the company has coalesced into a tight-knit group of seasoned pros in programming, marketing, production, research, business affairs, distribution and the myriad other disciplines that drive a linear cable network. Key Landgraf lieutenants — including entertainment president Eric Schrier, original programming president Nick Grad, marketing chief Stephanie Gibbons, program strategy president Chuck Saftler and communications chief John Solberg — have tenures of 15 years or more. All but Gibbons have been with FX since before Landgraf arrived in 2004. When Landgraf was promoted the following year to president, it marked his first experience at the top of a sizable organization.
“I thought I needed to be smart and know everything,” Landgraf recalls. In short order he learned a crucial lesson.

Harry Anderson, who earned multiple Emmy nominations for playing Judge Harry T. Stone on the NBC comedy Night Court, was found dead today at a home in Asheville, Nc. He was 65. No cause of death was reported, but Asheville Police Pio Christina Hallingse confirmed his death to Deadline and said they do not suspect foul play.
Anderson appeared in three Season 1 episodes of NBC’s Cheers as local flim-flam man/magician Harry “The Hat” Gitties, including a memorable sting episode in which he starred. That role — which he would reprise a few times later on the then-rising sitcom — led to his landing the lead in Night Court. The sitcom also starring John Larroquette, Markie Post and Richard Moll followed the wacky goings-on in a Manhattan night court and its staffers led by Stone, a boyish, grinning, jeans-and-sneakers jurist who was unconventional to say the least.

Harry Anderson, the amiable actor who presided over the NBC comedy “Night Court” for nine seasons, has died at his home in Asheville, N.C., according to a local media report. He was 65.
Anderson was found at his home by police officers early Monday , according to a report by Wspa-tv, the CBS affiliate in Spartanburg, S.C. No foul play was suspected, police told the station.
Anderson was a magician-turned-actor who was known as a rabid fan of jazz singer Mel Torme. The affection for Torme was woven into his TV alter ego, Judge Harry Stone, a quirky character who ruled the bench at a Manhattan night court. The sitcom was a mainstay of NBC from 1984 to 1992. Anderson earned three consecutive Emmy nominations for his work on the show from 1985-1987.
Anderson gained national attention after he guest starred as grifter Harry “the Hat” Gittes on NBC’s “Cheers” in the early 1980s.

Ever since The Shield kicked its way into living rooms in 2002, FX has been known as the home of uncompromisingly dark, unsettling dramas, from the 9/11-scarred Rescue Me to the short-lived Iraq-war series Over There to the batshit crazy antics of Ryan Murphy's Nip/Tuck and American Horror Story. But while the drama strands of FX's DNA remain strong, the cabler has now become just as known for its ambitious half-hour comedies: The expansion really began in 2005, with It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (apologies to 2000's Son of the Beach), and now the network also has Louie, Wilfred, Archer, and The League. Now, as Louie and Wilfred return for new seasons tonight, FX is throwing a new, seemingly bizarre ingredient into its successful comedy recipe: Charlie Sheen, who stars in the very un-fx multi-camera comedy Anger Management. So we took the opportunity to call FX president John Landgraf to...

David Boreanaz's actress wife has spoken publicly for the first time since her husband confessed his infidelity, insisting she's "still angry" he cheated on her.
Former Son of the Beach star and ex-Playboy Playmate Jaime Bergman has vowed to try to repair her relationship with Boreanaz after he admitted to cheating on her with an unnamed woman, who had threatened to sell her story to the media.
Bergman admits she and Boreanaz, who wed in 2001, have been working on their marital issues for the last year and are currently undergoing therapy - but she's still struggling to accept that he was unfaithful.
She tells People.com, "When we got married we had an unbelievable foundation that we've never forgotten. But it's been damaged.
"I'm not saying everything's okay. I'm still angry. I'm still mad. I am still hurt. It took a crisis, it took infidelity to get us off our a**es and work for what we want. We do the best we can. That's all we can do.
"What's working for us (is) taking our time, moment to moment, day to day."
The couple has a son Jaden, eight, and an eight-month-old daughter Bardot.

A 3D movie involving sharks and a big-breasted blonde's boobs? Shouldn't The Buz be writing this story? Is there even a story here? There will be if Heidi Montag has it her way. God help us.
With MTV canceling "The Hills" after six culture decaying seasons, Heidi Montag now has to come up with some other means by which to remain in the public spotlight and pay off what must be her astronomical plastic surgery bills. I believe Montag is composed of enough synthetics by this point to legally change her name to Cherry 2000.
Having already failed to launch a singing career, Montag (seen in the accompanying photo looking like an unplugged Stepford Wife) has set her sights on Hollywood, and not just acting. She's written a screenplay for a movie she plans to star in about her Ddd breast implants defeating a man-eating shark. You think I'm making this up?...

Ahhh, the clash of 1980’s slasher throwbacks! Both Hatchet and The Tripper are silly, campy potential classics that most either love, or completely hate. I myself fit into the former category. Neither picture can lay claim to technical mastery, but I find both features to be extremely entertaining, humorous and accurate in their homage. If you dig those wonderfully terrible slasher flicks that (thankfully) flooded the market throughout the 1980’s, you may very well get a kick out of both of these films.

Once known for running endless repeats of In Living Color and M*A*S*H, the network has made an effort during the past 18 months to reinvent itself as a basic-cable HBO -- a haven for edgy and provocative programming that would never make it on a broadcast network. The Shield star Michael Chiklis' stunning upset win for best drama actor at last month's Primetime Emmy Awards seemed to be the vindication for that strategy. The show put FX on the map in terms of media attention and critical acclaim. Plus it brought in big ratings -- an average of 2.1 million viewers in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic in its first season, a solid showing for basic cable. But as Shield begins production on its second season, the Chiklis Emmy win won't change too many marketers' feelings about the cop show's graphic violence. "If the content is too controversial, I can't see advertisers suddenly switching their content policies because of an Emmy," said Brad Adgate, senior vp corporate research director at media-buying firm Horizon Media. So can FX afford to emulate HBO, which is not advertiser-supported and thus is less sensitive to the ratings performance of its shows? The effort to fashion a more high-toned image for the 8-year-old channel led to the cancellation of the Howard Stern-produced lowbrow comedy Son of the Beach, which had been one of FX's highest-rated shows.
