Another good Pete Smith comedy short about a Good Samaritan...
Doylenf29 March 2009
DAVE O'BRIEN plays the Good Sam kind of neighbor, willing to do anything for anybody. His first mistake is taking care of a neighbor's dog, much to his wife's aggravation. Needless to say, the dog wrecks the house and the wife goes home to stay with mother.

Next, he gets involved in helping a damsel in distress with getting her car started. Again, everything that can go wrong does. Finally, after one bad situation after another, he ends up taking her home in the wee hours of the morning while her irate hubby waits patiently for her at the front door. You can guess what happens when he sees our Good Samaritan still clad in bathrobe and pajamas.

Very funny. One of the best in the series.

If firearm advocates had set out to film . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . a brief flick defending "Stand your ground," it's unlikely that they could have produced anything more convincing than DO SOMEONE A FAVOR! This live-action short begins with the premise that "Mrs. Dibson" is allowing her unarmed milquetoast husband to guard the "family castle" during her brief absence. Not long after his missus departs, a devious dame sneaks onto the Dibson property. Since he's not packing heat, Mr. D. cannot fire so much as a warning shot. Helpless to ward off this blonde home invader, the alleged "man of the house" must "cringe and bear it" as the duplicitous dish damages his domicile, setting a slow-burning fire and harming his hand. The marauding maven then manipulates her maimed man into mashing his road-master amid multiple mishaps. She then lures the duped dummy first into traffic court, and later leaves him at the mercy of a jealous lout. Under the proposed "Stand Your Ground Amendment," Mr. Dibson could have blasted this Femme Fatale to Kingdom Come as soon as she neared his front door, or at least had her at "Hello." Just one more reason to support your local chapter of BANGS (Broke Americans Need Gun Stamps).

Do Someone a Favor (1954)

*** (out of 4)

Pete Smith short has Dave O'Brien playing a nice guy who is constantly doing people favors but then getting a bad deal. He babysits the neighbors large dog, which causes the house to get wrecked, which sends his wife away to her mothers. Things only get worst when a sexy blonde shows up at his door with car trouble. This is one of the better Smith shorts out there as this one features constant laughs from start to finish. The highlight is certainly the ending where O'Brien ends up sleeping in the garage with the dog who climbs on top of here where, of course, more trouble happens. Smith's narration is very good throughout, which is another plus.
