Shortly after Halle Bailey and Rachel Zegler were crowned real-life Disney princesses, they met for the first time at a ball — the 2021 Met Gala, to be exact. It was the beginning not only of a beautiful friendship, but of a new era for Disney. Bailey became the first Black Ariel in Rob Marshall’s live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid,” based on Disney’s beloved 1989 animated film. Zegler — who used to dress up as Snow White as a little girl — will embody a Latina fairy-tale heroine who befriends seven CGI-created dwarves in 2025’s “Snow White.”
The singer-actors are also showcasing their golden voices in literary adaptations: Bailey, as young Nettie in “The Color Purple”; Zegler, as Lucy Gray Baird in the “Hunger Games” prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.” Here, Bailey, 23, and Zegler, 22, reflect on their princess experiences and strategies for silencing the social media haters.

[This story contains major spoilers from the first season of Love Island Games.]
As singles looking for love returned to the Love Island villa hoping for a second chance at a romantic connection in Peacock’s new spinoff Love Island Games, they were also met with more drama and intense challenges.
Though Islanders are typically used to public votes determining who gets to stay in the villa, in the new show, set in Fiji, they had to trust in their own abilities as they took on both team and couples’ challenges, games and duels.
Love Island Games also brought together fan-favorite Islanders from various Love Island series across the globe, including the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Sweden and Germany. Among those was Cely Vazquez, who competed on season two of Love Island USA in 2020.
But Vazquez wasn’t the only Islander from her season who returned for the new show. Her best friend Justine Ndiba and her ex Johnny Middlebrooks also came back,...

Fans have been laying the smackdown on a new waxwork model of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, which was recently unveiled at the Grévin Museum in Paris, France. The reaction caught the attention of Johnson after comedian James Andre Jefferson Jr. took to Instagram to roast the controversial wax figure, noting that the model’s skin tone makes the Black Adam star look like “David Beckham or a member of the Royal Family.” “I knew my boy @jamesjeffersonj had this Rock wax statue in his roasting crosshairs,” Johnson wrote on his own Instagram page on Sunday (October 22) night. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dwayne Johnson (@therock) Johnson said he “belly laughed” at Jefferson’s quip, “Is this how y’all felt when you lost the Little Mermaid?”, which referred to the casting of a Black actress, Halle Bailey, to play the title role of Ariel in the 2023 adaptation of the Disney classic.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is making sure the Grévin Museum in Paris does something about Dwayne “The White-Washed Pebble” Johnson. Last week, the museum unveiled a wax replica of the actor with an uncanny resemblance, except its skin tone was quite a few shades lighter than it should have been. Over the weekend, the internet got ahold of photos from the unveiling and meme’d it into oblivion — many of which landed on Johnson’s radar.

This article contains spoilers for "Our Flag Means Death" season 2.
"Our Flag Means Death" is not a show that can be accused of holding back. Like Spanish Jackie (Leslie Jones) meeting a new potential husband for her collection, David Jenkins' pirate comedy just loves to say "yes!" to its heart's desires. So, when the opportunity arose to create an underwater dream sequence in which Ed Teach, aka Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), has a vision of his lost love Stede Bonnet, aka the Gentleman Pirate (Rhys Darby), swimming towards him as a hunky merman, the "Our Flag Means Death" team was all-in.
According to a deep-dive into the making of this sequence published by Entertainment Weekly, Jenkins and the other writers had wanted to turn Stede into a merman for years. It’s the summer holidays, so what better time for the House of Mouse to release the latest live-action remake of one of their most beloved tales to the Disney+ streaming service? Yes, The Little Mermaid will be making a big splash in September!
Starring Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, Melissa McCarthy, and Javier Bardem, the film follows the same basic plot as the animated version, complete with songs. Elsewhere in September, Ahsoka continues rolling out the latest arc of the Star Wars saga, while Marvel’s Groot will be back for a fresh batch of animated shorts. What trouble will the little tree find himself in next? We’re excited to find out, but that’s not all she wrote for Marvel fans this month,...

Once Upon a One More Time will play its final Broadway performance Sept. 3.
The musical, which features the songs of Britney Spears and a storyline about fairytale princesses in search of enlightenment, began preview performances at the Marquis Theatre on May 13 and opened June 22. Spears approved the musical and suggested its initial themes. She also signed an underlying rights agreement with the show, which was notably one of the first deals Spears signed since a judge terminated her conservatorship.
The closing notice comes as the musical failed to catch on with critics and with Broadway audiences, with the show reporting capacities in the 50 percent range for the past seven weeks. In the last publicly reported week of grosses, ended Aug. 13, the musical grossed its lowest eight-performance week yet, bringing in $512,008.

For Sony, a big win this week: The studio has announced that “Insidious: The Red Door” ($19.99) is now the biggest-grossing horror film worldwide for 2023. That’s a little surprising, but a $182 million take tops both “M3GAN” and “Scream 6” for the honors.
However, it’s faring a little differently on VOD. Released to PVOD after its fourth weekend, the latest entry in the horror franchise had an uneven debut over three different platforms. It is #1 at Vudu (which ranks by revenue) but is currently only #5 at iTunes and #7 at Googleplay (which calculate by transactions). It got as high as #3 at iTunes after its Tuesday release.
Two other films placed atop the others: “The Little Mermaid” (Disney), also $19.99, repeated at #1 on iTunes, while “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” (Paramount), just reduced to $5.99, leads at GooglePlay.

Unlike their just opened “Haunted Mansion”, Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” might ultimately break even. If it does, its performance on PVOD could be make or break.
Of note, suggesting Disney’s much-revised strategy, this release came after nine weekends in theaters (60 days) and ahead of future Disney+ streaming.
With a reported production cost of $250 million and the usual added expense, its ultimate worldwide gross of $600 million, though otherwise impressive, means post-theatrical revenues need to be substantial. Opening #1 on all charts its initial week is a good first step.
What it will need is multiple weeks of strong play beyond a default first week #1. Last week “The Flash” (Warner Bros.), a far smaller performer in theaters, did debut at the top. But this week it’s only #2 on one chart (Vudu), while third and fourth elsewhere. The bounty for PVOD comes from long term, and high end charts (with the...

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (Disney), with a reported production budget close to $300 million, opened to $130 million worldwide. That includes the studio’s generous estimate of $60 million for the U.S./Canada.
This weekend marks the midway point of the summer movie season, which began with expectations that it might achieve a 20 percent uptick against 2022. As of now, the season’s total gross sits slightly below last year.
Add in marketing, including its Cannes Film Festival premiere, and the total investment for “Indiana” might total $450 million with no path to profit. It might lose as much as “The Flash” (Warner Bros. Discovery), which cost closer to $200 million and will see a worldwide gross around $250 million.
Unless there’s a massive turnaround for “Indiana”, it will get to between $300 million and $350 million worldwide. With somewhat more than half returned to Disney in film rental, that’s under $200 million versus its huge cost.

It is quite conceivable that another near-$200M weekend is in store at the box office over the July 21-23 frame.
Warner Bros.’ comedic feature take on girl toy Barbie starring Margot Robbie in the title role and Ryan Gosling as Ken cruised onto tracking today, and hot would be a modest way of describing the box office outlook here. While Warners conservatively is saying $60M, tracking shows that Barbie is bigger than last month’s The Little Mermaid in pulling in general audiences and young women under 25. A weekend start of $80M minimum is what we’re hearing, and that too is a tampered-down expectation because Barbie on paper has all the glitz for a potential $100M start. Little Mermaid‘s 3-day over the Memorial Day holiday weekend was $95.5M.
Barbie’s sweet spot is under-35 females and secondarily 35- to 49-year-olds.

In theory, the Father’s Day weekend and Juneteenth holiday could boost Sunday’s grosses enough to prevent this weekend from falling below last year’s performance. However, even if that’s the case — and in all likelihood, it’s not — that’s a hell of a note when you’re looking at the debut of two new films from prime franchises, each costing over $200 million, and some vital holdovers.

With movie ticket sales still lagging behind pre-pandemic highs, multiplex operators across Asia have begun deploying unconventional strategies to generate excitement and attract people back to the cinema.
Total theatrical revenue in the Asia-Pacific region was about $10.1 billion in 2022, down from $17.8 billion during the pre-pandemic year of 2019, according to data from regional consultancy Artisan Gateway. Over the first five months of 2023, several blockbusters — such as Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and Japanese anime Suzume — have helped buoy sales in the region, but exhibitors in almost every country of Asia still have a long way to go to reach pre-covid 19 highs.
Perhaps it’s no surprise then that multiplex operators have begun to get a little experimental. Here are three colorful examples from across the region.

A better-than-expected showing for “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” (Paramount) is only one reason why this is a good box-office weekend. The expensive Hasbro toy franchise ($200 million before marketing) grossed $110 million overseas, above its $60.5 million domestic take. Greater international strength was expected, and needed: It will need well over $500 million worldwide to cover its costs and there’s intense competition ahead, starting with Warner Bros. Discovery’s “The Flash” June 16.
If summer 2023 has a shot at the hoped-for $4 billion, films like “Transformers” need robust openings. Stage two is sustaining strong runs.
That’s what #2 “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (Sony) and #3 “The Little Mermaid” (Disney) did to buttress the weekend. The Marvel animated film, faced with the loss of most of its premium screens and “Transformers” competition, grossed more than $55 million this weekend. Ten days in, it’s already has bested the original “Spider-Verse” and stands at $225 million domestic, $377 million worldwide.

The Little Mermaid is getting doused in select foreign markets amid a racist backlash over the casting of Black actress Halle Bailey in the role of Ariel.
The movie has grossed a mere $3.6 million in its first 10 days of release in China, by far the worst showing among Disney’s live-action adaptations. It is also struggling badly in South Korea, where it has earned $4.4 million through June 4. Sources close to the movie, as well as box office analysts, say Disney knew Little Mermaid could face challenges, but is surprised by the extent of the backlash and its impact.
The social media outcry over Bailey’s casting has been particularly vociferous in both markets. Sources believe this has resulted in unverified audience reviews bashing the movie. In South Korea, such reviews have even made headlines.

Once again, a new film adorns the top of the box-office weekend as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse finished almost $80 million ahead of The Little Mermaid.
In its first weekend, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse brought in $120.5 million, easily taking the top spot of the top ten. Last weekend’s top film, The Little Mermaid, was pushed to second place with $40.6 million over the weekend, giving it an overall total of $186.2 million. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (Sony) is this summer’s first movie to exceed expectations and not a moment too soon, as the season’s total lags behind 2022. With $120.5 million, Sony’s animated Marvel sequel has grossed 60 percent of the 2018 original. That’s double what advance tracking indicated just over a week ago.
One reason was a terrific critical response, with an 87 Metacritic score that stands as the best for a wide studio release since “Little Women” in December 2019. It opened the same day as “Past Lives” (A24), which has the year’s best Metacritic score of 92 and now stands as the second-best specialized per-theater average of over $58,000, grossing $232,266 in four New York/Los Angeles theaters..
“Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3” and “The Little Mermaid” saw respectable debuts that didn’t reach the heights of their precedents, but “Spider-Verse” had additional advantages.

This piece contains minor plot details for "The Little Mermaid," which will be familiar to anyone who has seen the original movie. But here's a warning about it nonetheless!
1989's "The Little Mermaid" is truly one of the defining animated films in Disney's long, storied history. It's a classic that resonates to this day, which is why it's getting a live-action remake from director Rob Marshall later this month. A big part of what helps make the original such an enduring classic is the music. The remake does have some new songs in it, and our new, modern Prince Eric even gets to sing one. As for how the filmmakers chose where and when to add those new songs? It all came down to character.

Well, that’s awkward: We predicted a healthy $650 million box office for April and missed the mark — by a lot. The month’s total was $900 million, thanks to the overwhelming overperformance of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal), which initial projections placed at $250 million for its 24 days in April. (And even that felt optimistic.) “Smb” actually took in $491 million in the U.S./Canada for the period.
The rest of the month — holdovers “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) and “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” (Paramount) added just under $150 million, and new releases “Air” (MGM) and “Evil Dead Rise” (Warner Bros. Discovery) combined for over $110 million — came in as expected.
April also introduced an unexpected question. As the summer season begins with the traditional Disney Marvel release, will “Smb” suggest a surge in expectations — or does it mean, with perhaps a $650 million domestic total, we’ve already seen the release of 2023’s top title?...

Florence + The Machine have released a dark and dancey new single entitled “Mermaids.” Stream the song below.
With lyrical references to mermaids with “sharp teeth” who come to drink, dance, and “sacrifice a human heart,” the song’s sinister underbelly is contrasted by the angelic beauty of singer Florence Welch’s legendary vocal cords. Cool and confident, she delivers the poetic lines with a similar meter and punch as one of her biggest inspirations, Iggy Pop. When the refrain of “cheerful oblivion” arrives, you can’t help but get caught up in the reflective madness.
The release of “Mermaids” comes after several weeks of teasing the song on social media. On April 6th, the band posted a reel featuring edited-together clips from mermaid-themed horror films with the caption “A new song is coming to the Dance Fever universe,” referencing their celebrated 2022 LP. Then, on April 10th, the band posted a...

Disney’s two-minute The Little Mermaid featurette kicks off with the new Ariel, Halle Bailey, describing the original Little Mermaid as changing her world. “Like so many of us little girls, we all just wanted to be mermaids,” says Bailey, adding, “This Little Mermaid reflects what it means to want something greater for yourself.”
The video features new clips from the live-action adaptation along with interviews with director Rob Marshall, Melissa McCarthy (“Ursula”), Awkwafina (the voice of “Scuttle”), Alan Menken, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The film also features Jonah Hauer-King (A Dog’s Way Home) as Prince Eric, Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs (Hamilton) as the voice of Sebastian, and Jacob Tremblay (Luca) voices Flounder. Noma Dumezweni (Mary Poppins Returns) is Queen Selina, Art Malik (Homeland) is Sir Grimsby, and Oscar winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) plays King Triton.
Oscar nominee Rob Marshall (Chicago) directed from a screenplay by two-time Oscar nominee David Magee.

I can’t say I ever would have expected to hear that Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson would direct a live-action/hybrid reimagining of The Aristocats for Disney, but here we are. Deadline reports that Questlove will be getting behind the camera for The Aristocats, which was first revealed more than a year ago.
The original 1970 movie revolved around a family of Parisian felines who discover that they’re set to inherit a fortune from their owner. But when a jealous butler kidnaps them and leaves them in the country, they must find their way back home with the help of a smooth-talking tomcat. Will Gluck (Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway) and Keith Bunin (Onward) are set to pen the script for the live-action adaptation of The Aristocats, with Gluck also producing through his Olive Bridge Entertainment banner. In addition to directing The Aristocats, Questlove will also executive produce the project as well as oversee the music.

The 2023 Oscars returned to the Dolby Theatre on Sunday for Hollywood’s biggest night of the year. The Oscars telecast may have featured Everything Everywhere All at Once taking home the top prize, as well as six other awards, but the cameras didn’t catch everything. From Ke Huy Quan’s emotional reunions to Lady Gaga’s heart of gold, here are some of the things the cameras missed during the 95th annual awards show.

Halle Berry has responded to an angry Twitter user who confused her for Halle Bailey, the star leading the forthcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
Since Bailey was announced as the lead role in 2019, there have been a host of negative reactions to the concept of a Black actor portraying the fictional character.
In a recent Twitter exchange, a user named Suicide Sportif – whose account has since become private – shared two screenshots.
One included the metrics of the new Disney movie’s teaser trailer, showing over 2m views and more than triple the number of dislikes to likes, while the other was an excerpt from the Disney fandom website describing Ariel as “the youngest of King Triton’s seven daughters”.
Alongside the photos, they wrote: “Halle Berry is nearly 60 playing the role of a 16-year-old girl. This is what happens when you upset a fandom.”

"She has been staring at me for hours... Do you see her?" Can a painting be haunted? I guess we found out the answer to that question with Ghostbusters II. Mermaid is a new horror short film by filmmaker Wilfredo "Wil" Manzano - we already featured his other horror short The Fitting last year. His latest is an under-five-minutes short about a woman who thinks a painting on her wall is haunted. But is it really? Starring Shelby Hightower & Kerry Murphy. This is a simple but stirring little short, relying on all the typical filmmaking tricks to build up an uneasiness as the story plays out. It's worth a quick watch. Thanks to Wil for the tip. Could Harry Styles be the perfect Prince Eric? One day after the announcement that the One Direction star is “in early negotiations to play the iconic ‘Little Mermaid’ role,” the internet exploded with speculation as to how he would portray the object of Ariel’s affections.
“I can see lots of reasons why Harry is perfect,” says actress Maureen Van Zandt. “Eric is royalty and loves to sail and handle working class duties on the boat. Harry is pop royalty, but he’s really a boy from a working class background, and I’m sure, like The Beatles, he’d never let go of that. And, let’s face it, he’s gorgeous – as a fairy tale prince should be.”
Here are a few more reasons why Styles would rock the role:

It was November 17, 1989 when “The Little Mermaid” splashed into theaters. Its arrival loosed a Disney animation tsunami through the 1990s, resulting in a series of beloved films that are now experiencing a lucrative second life with live-action remakes like “Beauty and the Beast” and this month’s “Aladdin.”
“Mermaid” started it all, a lush underwater fantasia that harkened back to Walt Disney’s animated glory days, but — crucially — armed with a catchy, romantic Broadway score by two musicians with the Midas touch: lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken. They gave us instant classics like “Under the Sea” and “Part of Your World,” and the music won two Oscars.
The film, and Ashman and Menken’s score, will have a special 30th birthday party this weekend at the Hollywood Bowl, in a lavish projection-production with a live orchestra and songs performed by a cast that includes Lea Michele as Ariel,...

A nephew of Walt, he restored Disney to classic cartoon status
