Extremely Violent and Great
gangstahippie20 July 2006
Rated M for Strong Graphic Violence,Blood,Gore and Some Language.

When I first played Soldier Of Fortune it blew my mind. For 2000 this was an excellent game. The graphics were fairly good for 2000(though dated by today's standards) but what blew me away most was the graphic violence. The violence is very detailed in the game. You can blow off people's limbs and body parts with shotguns, you can see the bloody bullet holes in people when you shoot them. You can slice people up with a knife. You can shoot people in the balls with a shotgun showing their insides etc.The game is extremely violent.Even for 2000 and even by today's standards. Its one of the most violent video games ever.If you like very violent first person shooters then Soldier Of Fortune is the video game for you.I liked this game very much! Worth getting.

An excellent, but extremely violent game.

Soldier Of Fortune is pretty much a standard FPS game. It has a fairly linear story with several predictable characters. The player assumes the role of John Mullins, a mercenary who is hired to track down several stolen nuclear warheads from various locations around the planet. However, SOF's claim to fame is its high level of violence. While FPS games are known for being violent, this game takes it to an even bloodier level. The player can blow away or chop off different parts of an enemies body. Basically, keep this game away from the kids.

Although SOF uses the Quake 2 engine, you wouldn't know it by just playing the game. The graphics have been heavily modified with higher resolution textures and extra special effects. The player movement also seems a little bit different. As for the weapons, they are fairly realistic and look good. There are plenty of enemies to kill and the AI is reasonable.

Soldier of Fortune...

This review is for Soldier of Fortune Payback.

I played the Xbox 360 version.

Some of the most horrifying gore I have seen in a computer game.

This game has more of a multiplayer component than a single player campaign. But, you will just have as much fun. I don't know whether people still play this on Xbox Live... well, I mean, you would think so wouldn't you?

One of the rather different first person shooters and it is a pity that it is also one of the most seasoned and untouched.

SOF brings the player closer to the blood-thirsty and graphic reality of combat... the reality of being a Soldier of Fortune!

Who is type of guy that tracks down stolen nukes, assassinates Vietcong officers in Vietnam and carries out generally any other tasks that the US government won't touch - a guy like John Mullins!

The player is put into the character of John Mullins, an Army Special Forces trained soldier, turned Soldier of Fortune. As the movie-style cinematic sequences introduce the player to the Subway systems of New York City, the player is immediately thrust into the action with a little hostage negotiation - mercenary style.

As the plot continues to evolve, Mullins will travel all over the globe from Serbia, Siberia, Iraq to Japan - all in the name saving the free world... well all in the name of business!

Soldier of Fortune is certainly one of the most realistic and violently graphic games around, bringing the reality of combat ever so much closer to gamers. This game is fantastic!

Viewer Discretion is Advised

This review is for Soldier of Fortune: Platinum Edition, a GOG re-released from 2018 + SoFplus mod, a fan mod that adds new features to the base game such as Higher Resolution support etc.

The amount of gore in this game is truly horrifying. Saving Private Ryan comes to mind. A bullet or a bomb hits someone and the player witnesses his guts hanging out or limbs dismembered in real time. You play the role of John Mullins, a soldier for hire who accepts the most dangerous missions the U. S. government offers, including recovering stolen nuclear warheads and infiltrating war-torn Kosovo. The Devs of this game would go on to make several Call Of Duty games. I'm guessing that's where the Devs got their experience in close up cinematic violence. This was a unique FPS game ahead of its time when it was released in 2000. A very interesting game...

go and buy a movie instead

Warning: Spoilers
yo--- this game is all about guns blazing .It does seem that most sof gamers get addicted to sof gameplay .But i will stress on the fact that this game isn't made for kids or inexperienced gamers ,this one is M rated .The graphics are mood catching and holds you with rich orchestrations and dynamics .The AI is stupid tough they won't see you unless you are 2.5 feet away while leaning around corners, fortunately this avoids any use of strategy during gameplay. The music will hold inexperienced gamers like my brother for hours. The inclusion of real world hot spots was a good idea but game could get better with much more fiction. Not to forget ..i am playing this game for more than 2 years. And i recommend playing the Serbian missions during winter only and the kosovo missions during the rains only ,why? try it yourself.

Nice try...
swedzin16 November 2012
I'll be honest with you... This game was only the nice try in attempt to give us a fine blood-carnage action, with high-voltage elements and to show those good old cliché of Americans fighting justice all over the world. The second game "Soldier of Fortune: Double Helix" (2002) was far more better, while the third one… "The Payback" was extremely bad. Well, the game play could be more better, AI was nothing special, it was only fun because you can tear your opponent apart with your weapon. And that's about it… You are John Mullins, a free-based mercenary who tries to stop nuclear war… whoa! And you have missions on very interesting locations in the world. First, you have New York, just as an intro… Than you have Uganda, and then, Serbia, Kosovo, where you fight the Serbian militants (when I first remember the line "the Serbs attacked on Kosovo again… I was like… why would Serbian people attack themselves? You know why? Because American people don't know anything about Serbia, or their people. It was set in Gracanica, a Serbian enclave. I bet the game makers just randomly choose places for the game that they didn't even heard of), the next was Siberia, Russia, where you are fighting Russian soldiers… well, as usual, Russians were always the usual suspects when the hell breaks loose in the world… than you have Iraq… whoa! The ultimate opponent of USA… where you fight Saddam Hussein's soldiers… holy f**k… I bet this game was made only for those who are real fighting, righteous patriots… and for the end you have Sudan, Japan (of course… it's not complete without the gooks, right?) and Germany… to fight Sergei Dekker… a guy with Russian name… what to say… typical cliché… And that's the thing that really upsets me with this game… The only thing I really like about this game is voice actors… Todd Susman, the late Michael Clarke Duncan and Brian Thompson. Try "Double Helix"… it's far more better.
