David Barrington Holt, who established and ran the first Creature Shop on the West Coast for The Jim Henson Company during his two-plus decades with the firm, has died. He was 78.
Holt died March 13 of complications from cancer at his home in Los Angeles, his son, Chris Holt, announced.
Holt started out with the Henson Co. in 1986 as deputy supervisor of its Creature Shop in the U.K. and was promoted to creative supervisor. He moved to Los Angeles in 1993 to set up a Creature Shop and produce the 1991-94 Disney-abc series Dinosaurs.
In L.A., Holt had creative oversight of shop operations including puppetry, animatronics, effects, performers, administrative matters and R&d, with developments in the field of real-time 3D CG animation.
He was instrumental in the creation of the Henson Performance Control System, which allowed a single performer to operate complex, computer-driven puppets in the same manner as though they were physical.

Crystal Minkoff has given us some memorable moments since she joined The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in Season 11.
However, because she’s a full-time cast member we also get a glimpse into her personal life with her husband, Rob Minkoff, and their two kids.
Rob often stays in the background and allows his wife to shine when we see them together on the show.
However, Crystal’s husband is a big-time Hollywood producer and animator despite his laid-back persona.
Crystal and Rob appear to have a solid marriage that hasn’t fallen victim to the reality TV curse.
We’ve learned quite a lot about Crystal over the past few years, but let’s get to know more about her husband, Rob Minkoff, his job, net worth, and everything else.

As the aftereffects of the writers’ and actors’ strikes hit streaming in a big way, there’s not a lot of new content to offer subscribers early in 2024. Hulu still has some interesting things to offer in January, though.
The biggest new Hulu Original series in the new year is Death and Other Details, a locked room murder mystery starring Mandy Patinkin as Rufus Cotesworth, who is said to be the world’s greatest detective – at least in this universe. In the new series, Cotesworth comes to the rescue when an unfortunate soul is killed on lavish Mediterranean ocean liner, and he has to team up with the prime suspect (Violett Beane) to solve the crime.
The big Original movie premiere in January is Self Reliance, which follows a middle-aged dude (Jake Johnson) who gets randomly invited into a limo by Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg, and is soon offered...

The late '90s/early 2000s were a rough patch for Harrison Ford. Aside from 2000's "What Lies Beneath," the veteran star just couldn't seem to pick the right projects, with everything from 1999's "Random Hearts" to 2002's "Hollywood Homicide" (in which Ford agreed to star without seeing a finished script) struggling to make a critical or financial impression. But perhaps the lowest point came in 2002 when Ford starred in Kathryn Bigelow's sort of historical retelling of a narrowly averted Soviet submarine disaster, "K-19: The Widowmaker."
Loosely based on the story of the Soviet Union's first nuclear-powered submarine, which malfunctioned in 1961 and caused the death of 28 sailors from radiation poisoning, "K-19" was doomed from the outset. The film, as the Chicago Tribune put it, used a "fraction of the truth," noting that this was the National Geographic Society's first foray into blockbuster filmmaking. The company's then head...

A24’s acclaimed stop-motion/live-action hybrid “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” could be the wild card in the animated feature Oscar race — going up against such early favorites as Pixar’s “Turning Red,” Disney’s “Strange World,” and Netflix’s two stop-motion behemoths: “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” and Henry Selick’s “Wendell & Wild” (the latter being the lone animated feature premiering at TIFF).
And why not? The feature debut from director Dean Fleischer Camp (adapting a series of shorts he created with “Marcel” star Jenny Slate), has been embraced by critics for its charm, wit, inventive stop-motion, and its adorable breakout star. The one-inch anthropomorphic shell (voiced by Slate) lives with his grandmother Connie (Isabella Rossellini) and develops a friendship with doc filmmaker Dean (Fleischer Camp), who moves in and films Marcel’s daily activities, which go viral. There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

Though the summer movie season is winding down (if it ever really started this year), Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for September 2021 is chock full of worthwhile movie options.
For starters, Amazon’s library movie titles are quite good this month. September 1 sees the arrivals of heavyweights such as Apollo 13, Arachnophobia, Romeo + Juliet, The Descent, and The Social Network. And if that weren’t enough, the streamer is trying out some intriguing original movies as well. Cinderella, a modern update on the classic fairy tale, premieres on September 3. That will be followed by “exotic thriller” The Voyeurs (Sept. 10), musical adaptation Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (Sept. 17), and French thriller The Mad Woman’s Ball (Sept. 17).

While Netflix continues to add a lot of great content, including some new original series for the summer, the platform is also going to be losing parts of its library. In particular, July will see The Matrix trilogy depart the service for the newly launched HBO Max, with some other Warner Bros. movies also making their way over to the fledgling subscription rival. What titles, then, are no longer going to be available on Netflix come July?
Well, among the films that are leaving next month, notable pics include Cloverfield, The Curse of Benjamin Button and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, as well as the majority of the Tremors franchise. Another big Warner Bros. title, Christopher Nolan’s Inception, will also be removed, part of what’s becoming a mass transfer of content over to HBO Max as the rival looks to compete with Netflix on its back-catalogue of movies. New year, and a host of new Netflix additions to match.
While subscribers are currently mourning the loss of Friends – after going dark today, January 1st, the beloved sitcom won’t be available until HBO Max arrives in May – Netflix has today rolled out a bevy of fresh TV shows and movies to keep us entertained, including some truly unmissable horror properties.
From Event Horizon to Cloverfield, The Amityville Horror to the Tremors franchise, Netflix’s horror category has officially been restocked. There’s plenty to choose from, too, including the 2002 rendition of The Ring, which only makes us long for a competent retelling of the Japanese horror legend to right the wrongs of Rings (2017). At least we have the upcoming Grudge reboot to look forward to on Friday (or January 24th if you happen to be located in the United Kingdom).

Is Disney’s retelling of The Lion King live action or is it animated?
It’s a question that was raised once again on Wednesday after the studio announced the voice cast for Jon Favreau’s adaptation. But frankly it’s a question that isn't new in the animation and visual effects community.
Once upon a time it was easy to distinguish between live action and animation. But as digital visual effects become more sophisticated, an increasing amount of live action motion pictures are now created in a computer.

Jonathan Lipnicki made the world say, “Awwww,” in unison with his supporting performance in 1996’s Jerry Maguire. Seriously, the kid was so fricking cute he could have stopped wars and stuff. But Jerry Maguire was released 19-years-ago, and Lipnicki is a tad furious that he’s still primarily associated with that film. In fact, he’s so angry he’s created a hilarious video that involves him shouting at Tom Cruise. It’s well worth a watch. Thanks to Screen Junkies for the creation of the above video, and for Lipnicki for providing such a superlative take on himself. It was probably his most convincing performance since Stuart Little 2. There are a few things that we’ve learned thanks to the above video. Firstly, Jonathan Lipnicki deserves mad props for honing such a bodacious body. While it also looks as ...

It's been 15 years since six-year-old Jonathan Lipnicki stole the show opposite Tom Cruise in "Jerry Maguire." And now, Lipnicki can legally get into bars.

He went on to star in 1999's "Stuart Little" and 2002's "Stuart Little 2," as well as "Like Mike" and a few TV guest spots. Now, he spends a lot of time focusing on weight training and jujitsu, according to People, but is also getting back into the acting game.
He can be seen in this year's crime film "For the Love of Money" and the 2012 movie "Tag," according to the Internet Movie Database.
But staying out of the spotlight doesn't mean the drama stays away.

Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers, the directors of The Lion King, discuss the classic Disney film.
The Movie Pool recently sat in on a Q&A session with Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers, the directors of Disney's The Lion King, as they reflect on the film, the 3D re-release, and the upcoming Blu-ray release. Following is a transcript of the entire Q&A.
Q - What is your opinion about Broadway Musical The Lion King directed by Julie Taymor?
A - Rob Minkoff: When I first heard that a musical was being contemplated for The Lion King I was concerned it would attempt to be too literal. Beauty & The Beast had already made the leap to the stage and it was very much a replica of the animated movie. I didn't think that kind of approach would work for The Lion King. When Julie Taymor was brought on board...

We take a look at 11 directors who made the jump from animated to live action features, and how their attempts fared…
You hear quite a few live action directors, Guillermo del Toro, for starters, talking about a desire to make animated films. To control every aspect of the frame, and what goes in it.
Yet, the journey the other way around is increasingly common. It's hard not to see the appeal, too. For directing an animated film is a two year job at the very least, and three years more likely. Live action is generally a quicker way to get a film on the screen.
Also, given how CG dependent many movies are becoming, there's a general assumption that an animation director will have a better handle on computer effects.
However, great films from animation directors aren't that common. Here are eleven directors who took the chance, and how they got on.

Today Universal released Get Him to the Greek, a sort-of sequel to 2008's Forgetting Sarah Marshall as it uses Aldous Snow who had a small role in the original. Beyond that, there is only a brief reference to Sarah Marshall, which has me thinking it's not really a sequel as much as it is a spin-off. The same could be said for a movie like Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)... Same characters, but not really a sequel to Clerks, which ended up having its own sequel in 2006.
In a debate with a group of fellow Seattle critics trying to decide if Get Him to the Greek was a sequel to Forgetting Sarah Marshall or not, the topic turned to comedy sequels in general and I was asked to name a great comedy sequel. Should be easy... right?

For many genre fans, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter was the ultimate sequel of the entire series. The Final Chapter was chock-full of great deaths and brought together a stellar ensemble cast including the now notable Crispin Glover and Corey Feldman and re-energized the franchise with a trip inside the mind of our favorite machete-wielding madman.
However, at the center of all that magic you have actress Kimberly Beck who portrayed the older sister, Trish Jarvis, to Feldman’s character Tommy. Trish was literally “the girl next door” as she came to realize one fateful night that at a neighboring rental home, Jason Voorhees was laying waste to a group of promiscuous teenagers who should have known better than to pick Camp Crystal Lake as a vacation spot.

The Japanese zombie drama Resurrection is coming back to theatres as a Hollywood movie entitled Rainbow Bridge. Oscar-winner Bruce Joel Rubin has been hired to write the screenplay, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Resurrection, which was called Yomigaeri in Japanese, centers around a town in which residents who have been dead for years come back to life and return home to their families. The townspeople, however, simply go about their lives as if nothing is amiss.
The 2003 movie has been described as a supernatural-themed film without many chills, which ought to suit Rubin just fine. He previously won the Oscar for writing the 1990 movie Ghost, but that had very little horror in it; rather, it was more like a love story mixed with some action.
More recently, Rubin adapted The Time Traveler’s Wife, a love story with science fiction/fantasy elements. Starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams, it debuted...

Bruce Joel Rubin is a enigma as a screenwriter; on one hand he wrote "stuff" like Ghost, Stuart Little 2 and the current release The Time Traveler's Wife, but then again he's responsible for the brilliant mind-f*ck Jacob's Ladder, one of the 90s most underrated gems. Hopefully, that's the one he'll be channeling for his next gig. Nothing against Stuart; Hugh Laurie was quirky as his dad. Rubin got the nod from Dreamworks to adapt the 2002 Japanese hit Yomigaeri into a U.S. remake...

Warner Bros. is moving up the release date for literary adaptation "The Time Traveler's Wife" from next year to Aug. 14.
To facilitate its move, Warners will delay releasing fantasy sequel "Final Destination: Death Trip 3D" until Aug. 28. "Death Trip" had been set to unspool on Aug. 14; "Traveler's" was an unslotted 2010 title.

Also set to unspool wide on Aug. 14 are Sony's sci-fi thriller "District 9," Summit's youth comedy "Band Slam" and Paramount Vantage's adult laugher "The Goods: The Don Ready Story."

After eight consecutive first place openings for Will Smith, his film Seven Pounds placed second behind Jim Carrey’s Yes Man at the weekend box office. The wacky comedy finished on top with an estimated $18.2 million and Big Willie Style’s only made $16 million.
The mediocre offerings and severe winter storms contributed to an incredibly slow weekend, down 40% from last year. Ironically, that is about the same percentage of people who actually wanted to see more silliness from 46-year-old Jim Carrey.
The high-concept Carrey comedy was expected to earn in the mid $20 millions, but was good enough to give Warner Bros another win. With the help of a certain dark knight, the studio is on pace to set the record for total domestic annual gross somewhere around $1.75 billion. When contacted for comment, an anonymous WB exec said, “Mmmm, money.”

Steven Poster has been elected to lead the International Cinematographers Guild as the latest in a succession of recent presidents at the IATSE Local 600. Elected by the local's national executive board to serve through May, Poster (Donnie Darko, Stuart Little 2) succeeds interim president Tom Weston, who continues as national vp after replacing ousted former president Gary Dunham. Dunham was removed from office last month after the guild's national executive board decided that he had exceeded the powers of office in executing his duties. Weston was the only candidate to run against Poster in the balloting to fill Dunham's unexpired term. Haskell Wexler, the guild's second national vp, declined a nomination. Poster was in Japan for a speaking engagement when his election was announced Saturday. In a statement, he pledged to work on core current issues. "My immediate goal is to focus on jobs for our members and to address the emerging technology in our industry," he said. "I will work hard to bring all regionals of the union together."...

NEW YORK -- The film industry's attempts to standardize processes in the digital production and postproduction environment is like a railroad company trying to lay tracks in front of a speeding train. That was the consensus of a group of motion picture science experts speaking Friday at the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers Technical Conference and Exhibition at the New York Hilton. Conference attendees said the biggest problem for film artisans in the digital realm is quickly becoming color management tools that determine the look of a project and stay with it from the previsualization stage, to film or digital dailies and all the way through the digital intermediate mastering, film printing and digital exhibition phases. The uniform standards for the wide range of proprietary software and hardware used in the digital postproduction process is becoming a big problem, attendees said. The nuances of colors can vary greatly when depending on the specs adhered to by various hardware and software providers. "Color management needs the most work in the industry," said cinematographer Steven Poster (Stuart Little 2). "We need a device-independent color management system from end-to-end."...

Columbia TriStar Film Distributors International on Saturday crossed the $1 billion mark in overseas theatrical grosses for 2002, marking the third time in the company's history the distributor has surmounted that level at the boxoffice. Jeff Blake, president of worldwide marketing and distribution for Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group, made the announcement Saturday. "While we have all been staggered by the record-breaking performance of our films in this country, audiences overseas have embraced these titles with incredible enthusiasm," Blake said. "This has been a colossal year for Sony Pictures Entertainment throughout the world and we couldn't be more proud of all our CTFDI partners." Said Mark Zucker, senior executive vp at CTFDI: "What is remarkable is that we still have a stunning slate to launch this fall and there are significant territories that have not yet played films like XXX, Men in Black II, Stuart Little 2 and Mr. Deeds." The milestone follows on the heels of the spectacular performance of the studio's domestic distribution arm, Sony Pictures Releasing, which crossed the $1.3 billion mark Labor Day weekend. To date, Sony's worldwide boxoffice is an estimated $2.4 billion. The studio hopes to challenge the record $2.68 billion set by 20th Century Fox in 1998, when Titanic was steaming through theaters.
Melanie Griffith is sparking speculation that there's trouble in her marriage to Antonio Banderas - stepping out again with her current co-star. Working Girl star Melanie, 44, has been seen repeatedly with Shade co- star Gabriel Byrne while Spanish hunk Banderas is away filming in Argentina. The couple have been spotted having an intimate lunch at Le Dome restaurant in Los Angeles and on a trip to the beach in Malibu. They also made an appearance together at the actor Rod Steiger's memorial service and the film premiere of Stuart Little 2. According to Britain's Daily Express newspaper, the signs are not good for Melanie and Antonio, who first met while filming together. A friend says, "There is definitely trouble brewing," while another is quoted as saying, "Her marriage has had problems for some time - and it looks as if she's turned to Gabriel for intimacy."...

The script of Men In Black 2 is being changed in response to the recent terrorist attacks on New York. Filming for the sequel in New York was postponed after the tragic events at the World Trade Center. The film originally ended with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones's characters fighting an alien worm at the top of the World Trade Center. Reports claim that the action in the final scenes will remain the same, but will be set in a different part of the city to avoid offense to victims of the attacks. The New York City Mayor's Office Of Theater, Film, And Broadcasting has issued permits to allow filming to resume in New York, meaning the Men In Black 2 cast and crew can go back to work. Other films delayed by the atrocities were Spider-Man and Stuart Little 2.
