Filming the horrifying scenes of Dachau so traumatized Stevens that upon his return to Hollywood after the war he fell into a depressed state, not working and keeping himself apart from the industry. He did eventually return to directing, but completely left behind his prior style as a great comedic director and helmed only serious movies for the rest of his career.
