Image Entertainment originally intended to release Vermillion Eyes on DVD in 2004, alongside Nathan Schiff's other films - Weasels Rip My Flesh (1979), The Long Island Cannibal Massacre (1980) and They Don't Cut the Grass Anymore (1985). The movie was digitally mastered for the first time, partially re-scored and painstakingly restored from the original 8mm film footage. Interviews with cast and crew, and even a commentary track with the director were recorded for the DVD. However, the company made the decision to pull the release at the last minute, citing legal concerns over the film's "violent nature and content" (despite the fact that the film contains significantly less on-screen gore than They Don't Cut the Grass Anymore, which Image did release). This is seemingly due to the inter-cutting of gruesome murder scenes with shots of nudity and simulated sexual activity during the film's climax, although Schiff himself has suggested that the film's complete lack of humor and experimental style may also have been contributing factors.
Filmed in 1988.
