I don't think the symbolism of a young woman's breasts and milk was intended. This was, instead, more of a "biter bit" sort of revenge using the tools at hand, and undoubtedly pleased many a young lady who has been offered insults, verbal and physical, by men who think they are entitled.
It's also pretty typical of comedies before the turn of the century. With only half a minute in which to do something, a situation must be set up and replied to post haste.
