In a 2022 interview for Variety, actor, writer, and director Christopher Guest said, “When I met (Jennifer Coolidge), I knew there was something going on that was special. And I was right, fortunately.” He praised her ability to command attention without commanding the dialogue. “This person stands out. Everyone else to me is invisible. You want to see her.”
We have seen her on our television and theater screens since the early 90s. And 2023 may have been her best year yet.
So, what happened to Jennifer Coolidge, the self-deprecating eccentric humorist and sometimes sex symbol, who owns over 100 credits in television and film? To know that, we must do what we always do: start at the beginning where the beginning began.

The 1999 coming-of-age comedy "American Pie" was a massive hit when it was released in 1999. Starring a who's-who of upcoming teen talent, "American Pie" delved deeply into the more embarrassing sexual details of being an adolescent boy in the modern day. There were scenes involving bodily fluids, oral sex, and multiple references to creative masturbation. While the bulk of the film -- written by Mike Herz and directed by Paul Weisz -- prided itself on aggressive raunchiness, it wisely ended on a sweet note, allowing the characters to realize that despite having had sex, they still have a lot to look forward to on their journey of growing up.
For a while in the early 2000s, Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Mena Suvari, Shannon Elizabeth, Seann William Scott, Thomas Ian Nicholas, and Natasha Lyonne were household names largely because of the "American Pie" movies. To date, the series has made $990 million.

The coming-of-age film American Pie was one of the surprise hit movies of the 1999 film season. Fans quickly became invested in a group of high school friends and their families in the Jason Biggs, Eugene Levy, and Jennifer Coolidge-led big-screen success. Two years later, American Pie 2 revisited the friend group, now college students. However, when the third sequel, American Wedding, was filmed in 2003, many cast favorites were missing. Why was that so?
Why were so many of ‘American Pie’s’ original cast members not a part of ‘American Wedding?’
In 2003, producers of the American Pie film franchise orchestrated the wedding of Jim Levenstein (Jason Biggs) and Michelle Flaherty (Alyson Hannigan) as the centerpiece of American Wedding. The movie intended to bring together the cast of the first two installments as a love letter for the characters and film fans who supported the franchise since 1999.

Sony had been planning to give director Chris Weitz’s horror film They Listen a theatrical release on August 25th of this year, which is why we have it listed on our Summer Horror Movie Preview… but we’re going to have to remove it from that list, because Sony has (according to Yahoo) decided to delay the release an entire year. They Listen is now set to reach theatres on August 30, 2024.
They Listen is coming to us from Sony, Blumhouse, and Depth of Field. Weitz is producing the film with Jason Blum and Andrew Miano. Bea Sequeira, Dan Balgoyen, Britta Rowings, and Paul Davis serve as executive producers. Filming was already underway in Los Angeles back in December, so this movie is going to be complete and sitting on a shelf a while before its new release date rolls around next year.
All details about They Listen are being kept under wraps.

Havana Rose Liu recently had her breakthrough role playing the lead in the Hulu thriller No Exit (read our review Here) – which was an okay movie, but underwhelming in comparison to the awesome Taylor Adams novel it was based on. Now Deadline reports that Liu is returning to the thriller realm with a role in in director Chris Weitz’s horror film They Listen. Liu joins a cast that includes the previously announced Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant), John Cho (Searching), Lukita Maxwell (Shrinking), and Riki Lindhome (Wednesday). Details on her characters, and in fact on every character in the movie, are being kept under wraps.

1999’s American Pie was a sensation upon release, launching the careers–however quickly some fizzled out–of its core cast. The American Pie ensemble had several breakouts, but one who made her own impact on both the horny teen characters and wide-eyed male moviegoers was Shannon Elizabeth, who played foreign exchange student Nadia. But Elizabeth didn’t want anyone to see it at all.
Reflecting on her experience shooting American Pie, Shannon Elizabeth said Czech bombshell Nadia wasn’t nearly as fun to play as she was to watch. Yet it has nothing to do with baring it all on the world wide web (in the famous scene featured in the thorough documentary Skin: A History of Nudity in the Movies), but rather post-production problems. “When I did American Pie, they called me in to do Adr [additional dialogue recording]. Shannon Elizabeth became a teen movie icon with her breakthrough role in 1999’s “American Pie.” She played Nadia, the foreign exchange student from Czech Republic who Jason Biggs’ Jim wants to lose his virginity to before high school graduation. Elizabeth recently revealed on the “Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum” podcast (via The Independent) that she was left “devastated” by the film after the post-production team screwed with her accent. Elizabeth said the accent in the film was not what she originally wanted.
“When I did American Pie, they called me in to do Adr,” Elizabeth said. “They were like, ‘We’re gonna play with the accent.’ So I’d say something and then they’d go, ‘Ok, do less of an accent.’ I was like, ‘Why are they messing with this accent so much?’ I had worked really hard with a dialect coach on this.”

Chris Weitz went uncredited on his feature directorial debut American Pie, which he directed alongside his brother Paul Weitz, but since then he has earned directing credits on Down to Earth, About a Boy, The Golden Compass, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, A Better Life, and Operation Finale. He dealt with some horror elements in the Twilight movie, but now Deadline reports that he is going all-in on horror with his new film They Listen. They also report that Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant) and John Cho (Searching) have signed on to star in the film.

Just when you thought you'd sung the words, "Bye, bye, Miss American Pie," for the last time, Universal Pictures is ready to reheat the pie and kindly offer you some more. And you better like it because this is a multimillion-dollar film franchise and it's too expensive to pie you in the face with it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new "American Pie" movie is in the oven, based on an original pitch that is said to offer a "fresh take" on the 23-year-old sex comedy film series.
Sujata Day, known for her roles in Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore's HBO series, "Insecure," as well as Rae's web series "The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl," is the up-and-coming filmmaker behind this new "American Pie" pitch. Before Jennifer Coolidge was Tanya McQuoid on The White Lotus or Paulette Bonafonté in Legally Blonde, she was "Stifler's Mom" in American Pie. And, according to Coolidge herself, viewers were drawn to the actress both on and offscreen. "You know, I got a lot of play at being a Milf and I got a lot of sexual action from American Pie," she said in a video for Variety's latest cover story. "There were so many benefits to doing that movie. I mean, there would be like 200 people that I would've never had slept with." Coolidge, 60, played the mother of Stifler (Seann William Scott) in the 1999 movie and its sequels, which included American Pie 2 (2001),...

In a sign that perhaps the departing “Saturday Night Live” stars are returning to their greatest hits as they head out the door, this week’s cold open featured a wild sendoff for at least two of them. For Kate McKinnon, that meant her fan favorite alien abductee Ms. Rafferty, who once again shared a wildly inappropriate experience with Nsa officers played by Aidy Bryant and Mikey Day.
After showcasing her experience, McKinnon as Ms. Rafferty headed off into space, after one last goodbye. This clearly doubled as a McKinnon goodbye as well. “I kind of felt like an alien on this planet anyway,” the character said. “Well Earth, I love you, thanks for letting me stay awhile. Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”
The clip opened with Bryant and Day, and sustained applause — clearly directed at Bryant, who is also departing after this episode.

A representative for Lively confirmed his death to Variety.
In the two “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” movies, which came out in 2005 and 2008, Lively portrayed the father of Bridget, played by his real-life daughter, Blake Lively. Well here we are. April is going to be a fairly sedentary and isolating month for a lot of people. At least we now thankfully have some guidance as to our entertainment options as HBO has released its new streaming releases for April 2020.
HBO’s original series premieres are pretty busy this month. The fourth season of Issa Rae’s excellent comedy Insecure arrives on April 12. That’s preceded by the fascinating docuseries Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children and followed by book adaptation I Know This Much is True.
On the film side of things there are a few exciting options. Good Boys arrives on April 4, It: Chapter Two on April 11, and Stuber on April 18. Some older movies arriving on April 1 are Team America: World Police, Die Hard, and Slumdog Millionaire.
Here is everything else coming to HBO Now and HBO Go in April 2020 via HBO PR.

4th Update, Sunday Am writethru following Saturday Am post, w/updated chart: There isn’t a studio executive out there who would disagree: the weekend opening for Universal’s Good Boys –now at $21M this morning per Uni– is fantastic for the theatrical business. February is here, which means Valentine’s Day is around the corner. Hulu is offering traditional fare (think Kleenex and chocolates) like the Sandra Bullock-led rom-com “While You Were Sleeping,” as well as “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Moonstruck,” and “Barefoot.”
Why stop at romantic relationships though? Celebrate Galentine’s Day, the Feb. 13 “holiday” popularized by “Parks and Recreation,” which honors women and female friendship. Check out the thrilling “Thelma & Louise” or “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” and for campy reality TV fun, watch women fight and make up on “The Real Housewives of New York City.”
Hulu has also brought out a spate of James Bond films, so get yourself a martini and marathon “Dr. No,” “From Russia With Love,” and “Thunderball,” all the way up to “Tomorrow Never Dies.”

Movies New to Netflix in February: ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ & ‘High Flying Bird’ Premiere, Plus Every ‘Jaws’
Netflix is having a very good start to 2019. In addition to landing its first Best Picture nomination for Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma,” (the film tied with “The Favourite” for most nominations — 10), the streaming service took another step towards industry legitimacy by officially joining the MPAA this week. The site’s original film slate continues to broaden and diversify, and the streamer seems to pull an infinite number of rabbits out of its expertly-branded red hat.
As the Sundance Film Festival kicks off this week, the Jake Gyllenhaal vehicle “Velvet Buzzsaw” will play in the Premieres section. But Netflix viewers won’t be missing out for too long; the art heist genre thriller debuts on Netflix on the first day of February. That might make a nice double feature with the Kristen Stewart-starring “Personal Shopper,” or Matt Tyrnauer’s impeccably made disco doc “Studio 54.”

Congratulations are in order for Love, Simon — Nick Robinson and Keiynan Lonsdale won Best Kiss at the 2018 MTV Movie and TV Awards.
Lonsdale, 26, took the stage wearing a white skirt along with a long gold-patterned jacket — and also rocked some third eye artwork on his forehead — to accept the award for the acclaimed film, which tells the coming-of-age story about a gay teenager.
“I just want to say to every kid, you can live your dreams and wear dresses,” he said. “You can live your dreams and kiss the one that you love, no matter what gender they are. You...

The kids are alright. That’s what I thought in 2017 when “Moonlight” stars Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome won Best Kiss at the MTV Movie and TV Awards. True, the film had just won the Oscar for Best Picture, but in a way the MTV victory was just as significant. Voted on by the young fans who make up MTV’s target audience, it was further evidence of a generational shift towards acceptance of same-sex love and affection. Will “Love, Simon” continue that trend? Nick Robinson and Keiynan Lonsdale are nominated for the queer coming-of-age comedy.
In the earlier years of the MTV Movie Awards it was rare for same-sex kisses to be honored, and in the few instances when they were the kisses were intended to titillate (Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair in “Cruel Intentions”) or were the butt of a joke. The first time the award went...

Hey, Big Brother Fans. First, we just want to apologize. We previously ran a supposed leak list of 6 houseguests from a source on Twitter, and it turns out that none of those houseguests are actually any of the people that will be participating in the upcoming Celebrity Big Brother edition. It was a shock to us. The good news is the real cast actually looks a whole lot better than any of these fake leaked houseguests. As promised, CBS and the Big Brother producers finally revealed who will officially be participating on the first ever Celebrity Big Brother edition when it finally debuts on Wednesday night, February 7, 2018 at approximately 7 pm central standard time. They revealed it during the huge 2018 Grammy Awards tonight. There's a total of 11 houseguests to go over here. So, get comfortable. With no further ado, let's get right into this pretty ok sounding houseguest list. The first...

The first photos are out from "Kindergarten Cop 2," the forthcoming sequel to the now 25-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger family action-comedy.
Universal's 1440 Entertainment, which specializes in direct-to-video sequels and reboots like "The Scorpion King 4," "Jarhead 3," "Hard Target 2" and the disturbingly named "Beethoven's Treasure Tail," are behind this follow-up which sees Dolph Lundgren taking on the part of a tough-guy law enforcement officer.
Lundgren's Agent Reed goes undercover as a kindergarten teacher to retrieve a flash drive with sensitive information stolen from the Witness Protection Program. Unlike Arnie, Lundgren's character must also face off with the school's "politically correct environment".
Don Michael Paul ("Jarhead 2: Field of Fire") helms from a script by David H. Steinberg ("American Pie 2").

It's not that long ago that a sequel that did 65% of the original's business was deemed a success. Tell that to Spider-Man today...
When Tim Burton's Batman Returns was released in the summer of 1992, Warner Bros had high hopes. It was the follow-up to his 1989 Batman movie, which had shattered the record for a film's opening weekend at the Us box office (marking the first $40m+ opening on record in the States).
Batman went on to gross $251m at the American box office alone, and is credited as being a major stepping stone in the invention of the modern blockbuster (after the likes of Jaws and Star Wars). Hopes were not small for the sequel.
Even as late as the early 1990s, the main indicator of a film's commercial success lay in its American box office takings. By that kind of measure, this summer's Terminator: Genisys would have been...

Showing that audiences can love counter programming when it's offered, the hip hop biopic "Straight Outta Compton" about the origins of iconic rap group N.W.A. easily topped the U.S. box-office this weekend with a whopping $56.1 million.
That surpasses "American Pie 2" as the the biggest-ever August debut for an R-rated movie, and an opening on par with major tentpole blockbusters. It's also almost twice the film's reported $29 million budget which means it could certainly be one of the more profitable films of the season. The big question lies in its ability to travel internationally which is something it may not do.
Not faring so well was "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," Guy Ritchie's stylish spy caper take on the classic 1960s TV show. Costing a sizeable $75 million to make, the film opened in third place to just $13.5 million - not a good start.

It was the ultimate match-up between West Coast (Straight Outta Compton’s N.W.A.) and very much east (since The Man From U.N.C.L.E. takes place in Germany and Italy, which Team America would tell you are several thousand miles east of California), won handily by the rappers.Putting a giant cherry on top of Universal’s summer sundae, Straight Outta Compton far surpassed expectations, delivering $56.1 million at the Us box office during its first weekend, according to studio estimates. It snapped the record for biggest August debut for an R-rated film in the States, taking the crown from Universal’s own American Pie 2. And given that the company took what was seen as a big risk in funding the movie at $29 million (see where that money went here), the result nearly doubles that original budget in one three-day period. But while they couldn’t overcome the drawing power of Ice Cube and Dr. Dre,...

It’s been a full 25 years since Arnold Schwarzenegger ordered us back to the carpet – toy in hand, of course – though it looks as though the former Governor has passed on the torch as Detective John Kimble, with news arriving that Dolph Lundgren will be taking the reins for Kindergarten Cop 2.
That’s right, from one Expendable to another, Lundgren will play a different undercover cop than his musclebound amigo, with the sequel having him infiltrate a nursery as he narrows his hunt for a group of Albanian baddies. Playing against type much like Schwarzenegger in Ivan Reitman’s heartwarming 1990 original, Lundgren is set to try his hand at playing a teacher. Expect cheesy one-liners and heartwarming humor by the bucket load.
From what we understand, filming is already underway on Kindergarten Cop 2 in Vancouver, with plans to release the long-rumored sequel as a straight-to-dvd affair. American Pie 2 co-writer David H.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is missing from the now-shooting Kindergarten Cop sequel. So Dolph Lundgren has stepped in...
A few months back, we reported on a possible sequel to the Arnold Schwarzenegger comedy, Kindergarten Cop. The original movie saw Arnie reunite with Twins director Ivan Reitman, and we looked back at it in alarming detail right here.
Now, a sequel has become production, although in a surprise to virtually nobody, it won't be seeing the inside of a cinema. Instead, this is a straight to DVD/Blu-ray/VOD affair, that's being directed by Don Michael Paul. He's the man who also helmed previously sequels Sniper: Legacy, Jarhead 2 and Tremors 5.
Arnold Schwarzenegger won't be back for this one, and instead, Dolph Lundgren is stepping into his shoes. Ivan Drago as a teacher? That could work.
David H Streinberg, who co-wrote American Pie 2, has put together the script for this one. And it'll...

The Kindergarten Cop reboot is gearing up for the first day of school by hiring a substitute for Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Universal Pictures' straight-to-dvd follow-up to the 1990 comedy classic is turning to another 1980s action superstar in Dolph Lundgren to lead its cast.
TheWrap is reporting that Lundgren has started shooting Kindergarten Cop in Vancouver over the last few days.
The plot of this reboot has Lundgren as an undercover cop aided by his Indian assistant Sanjit to recover a missing flash drive from the Federal Witness Protective programme.
Lundgren will not be playing Detective John Kimble, the character Schwarzenegger recently described as his all-time favourite.
Schwarzenegger and Lundgren have history together as leading 1980s action heroes, as well as cast members of the Expendables franchise.
The reboot is written by David H Steinberg (American Pie 2) and directed by Tremors 5: Bloodlines's Don Michael Paul.
