I Demand A Recount
Theo Robertson4 February 2003
TV Viewers in Britain were invited to phone the channel 4 studios and vote on what they thought was the worst moment in the history of television . The countdown was as much as you`d expect , former Northern Ireland minister Dr Mo Mowlam fettering about with a sex aid on SO GRAHAM NORTON , those pesky middle class kids from WHY DON`T YOU , those very badly dubbed shows that used to appear on Saturday morning BBC childrens television in the 1970s and of course the recasting of different actors on soap operas . But according to voters the worst moment in the history of television was Richard Madeley doing an impression of Ali G on THIS MORNING !!!!!!! Aww come on guys I know you could fill this type of show with Richard Madeley clips - And he also came in fourth position with an interview with Shakin` Stevens - but to say that this is the worst thing you`ve ever seen is going too far

It might seem ironic considering the subject matter but I was very irritated by the presence of Kate Thornton in many of the interviews . Ms Thornton couldn`t have been much older than 25 when this show was broadcast and was perplexed about her opinions of 321 considering it was first broadcast in the mid 70s when Ms Thornton was born and finished about 10 years later when she wouldn`t have even been a teenager

Hell's Bells!
ShadeGrenade12 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Great idea - a 'celebration' of the all-time worst British television. Thing is, it has been done before, and better - by B.B.C.-2's 'T.V. Hell' ( 1992 ) which at least showed whole programmes rather than piddling clips. Here we've got Z-list celebrities being insufferably pompous about archive telly. One could easily excuse say John Cleese being rude about 'Bottle Boys'. Coming from Kate Thornton its a bit hard to take.

No attempt was made to take into account the context of the era in which the shows were made. I wonder how many of the viewers who chose 'Curry & Chips' have actually seen it? It was never repeated or issued on video/D.V.D. so its inclusion was strange. Meera Syal was only eight years old in 1969 but that did not stop her from laying into it. She said that it was basically: 'let's have a laugh at the w-g''. Actually, no it wasn't. It was 'let's have a laugh at the racists'.

The person who found the vandalism of the 'Blue Peter' garden funny should be ashamed of himself for openly encouraging the sort of attitude that leads to vandalism. I wonder if he would laugh if his own garden were wrecked in similar fashion?

Nevertheless the clips were well chosen for the most part, particularly Annabelle Lwin storming out of an interview with B.A. Robertson and the sheer inanity of 'The Word'. David Frost's encounter with Jerry Rubin's 'Yippies' was no worse than you will find on many contemporary talk-shows such as Jeremy Kyle.

One hopes that any future shows of this kind will focus on 'reality television' and the barrel-scraping awfulness they have unfortunately come to symbolise.

STAR RATING:*****Unmissable****Very Good***Okay**You Could Go Out For A Meal Instead*Avoid At All Costs

If you can manage to sit through both parts, this compilation of TV blunders hosted by Zoe Ball, makes for enjoyable viewing.Of course, being TV from Hell, can only mean one thing. And the most embarassing moments can only be when something is broadcast live.Look at the rioutous,side-splitting examples when Boy George and the short woman presented an award in 1989,only for the sound to fail,or when the Bee Gees stormed off Clive Anderson's talk show after taking an in-joke too personally. These and many others make for funny, and, above all, pleasant viewing.***
