Since 2001, actress Debra Winger has appeared sporadically in films and TV shows. She starred in and produced “Big Bad Love” opposite her husband Arliss Howard, co-starred in Jonathan Demme’s 2008 film “Rachel Getting Married” and the third season of HBO’s “In Treatment” and currently stars in the Netflix series “The Ranch.” But this year, she will star in her first film in over a decade opposite acclaimed playwright and actor Tracy Letts in “The Lovers.”

If you were watching films in the 80s, chances are, you're a fan of Debra Winger. A relative unknown (save for her appearance as Wonder Girl in the "Wonder Woman" TV series), Winger kicked off the decade with a trifecta of hits -- "Urban Cowboy" (1980), "An Officer and a Gentleman" (1982) and "Terms of Endearment" (1983) -- that made her a major Hollywood force in the short span of three years. Unfortunately for cinemagoers, that is no longer the case. Fortunately for Winger, that's of her own doing and not because Hollywood stopped fielding her offers. At 40, after a slew of commercial and art house successes, Winger stopped considering parts altogether, favoring a quieter life with her husband (Arliss Howard, who directed her in "Big Bad Love") and three children. She still acts from time to time on projects she's especially passionate about, such as Jonathan Demme's "Rachel Getting Married" and HBO's show "In.

A gripping mix of friendship, violence and redemption erupts in the contemporary South in this adaptation of Larry Brown's novel, celebrated at once for its grit and its deeply moving core. Directed by David Gordon Green (Prince Avalanche, Pineapple Express, Undertow, All The Real Girls), the film brings Academy Award® winner Nicolas Cage back to his indie roots in the title role as the hard-living, hot-tempered, ex-con Joe Ransom, who is just trying to dodge his instincts for trouble – until he meets a hard-luck kid played by Tye Sheridan (Mud, Tree Of Life) who awakens in him a fierce and tender-hearted protector. From a screenplay by Gary Hawkins (The Rough South Of Larry Brown), Joe is based on the novel by the late Larry Brown (Big Bad Love, Facing the Moon), the former Mississippi firefighter renowned for his powerful, gothic storytelling and universal themes of honor, desperation and moral rectitude.

Lionsgate have released the first trailer and poster for Joe, a movie which looks like it will contain a Nicolas Cage performance actually worthy of praise. It also stars Mud’s Tye Sheridan. While a release date of April 11th has already been set for the Us, it’s unknown when exactly it will reach the UK.
Director David Gordon Green is best known for helming the likes of Pineapple Express, The Sitter and Your Highness, but Joe promises to be more of a character driven piece, with the focus on two troubled individuals. Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Debra Winger's life has enough stories to fill a dozen movies. Want to hear about overcoming adversity? When Winger was 17, a car accident put her in a coma for weeks and left her partially paralyzed and blind for 10 months, during which time she vowed that if she recovered, she would become an actor. How about a great discovery story? As a struggling unknown actor, she crashed an audition and won the coveted role of the brash, sensual Sissy, opposite John Travolta, in Urban Cowboy, which made her an instant star. A hint of scandal? It's no secret Winger has had tense relationships on set, such as with her An Officer and a Gentleman director, Taylor Hackford, and her Terms of Endearment co-star Shirley MacLaine. And how about a tale with a surprise twist? After turning 40, with three Oscar nominations to her name, firmly ensconced as a sought-after actor, Winger...

American actress Debra Winger is stunned at the way everybody's seeing her latest movie as a comeback - because she didn't realise she was gone for so long. Winger, 46, dropped out of the spotlight after starring in the forgettable flick Forget Paris opposite Billy Crystal six years ago. The three-time Oscar nominee has now re-emerged on American cinema screens with her new movie Big Bad Love - and she's shocked to realize how long it's actually been since her last film outing. She says, "I didn't, like, announce my retirement, but I didn't look back and I was busy all the time. Time accelerates as you get older, and now when I hear it's been six years, it doesn't feel like it. I mean, I had a baby, my mom passed, I taught, I did two plays. I lived my life."...

Eighties film star Debra Winger has vented her dislike of the Hollywood film industry - branding it a world full of "dishonesty and disregard". Winger, star of such classics as Terms Of Endearment and An Officer And A Gentleman, claims the people she was "dealing with" are the ones who turned her off pursuing further success in the movie world, causing her to vanish into near-obscurity. In the February issue of Premiere magazine she says, "It was a real struggle for me. And the older you get, the more you feel hypocritical for living off it." And the brunette beauty, 46, also speaks of her reputation for being difficult to work with, explaining, "It keeps away the fainthearted. But I don't think I'm unkind. I think I might have been unkind when I was young. Listen, I did wild things, I lived a wild life. I consumed much. I just exploded with my independence. But I don't think I hurt anyone. I was too busy hurting myself." Winger will return to screens in Big Bad Love - her first film since 1995's Forget Paris - but refuses to term it a comeback. She says, "I'm not coming back anywhere. I am, however, many years older, and my interests are totally different, and there's nothing to come back to."...

Debra Winger has spoken out about her decision to return to the world of movies six years after leaving Hollywood. The 46-year-old American starred in a string of blockbusters, including An Officer And A Gentleman, but was branded "difficult" by producers because she frequently tried to re-write her roles and objected to sex scenes. After her third Oscar nomination for her portrayal of terminally ill poet Joy Gresham in the drama Shadowlands, she told friends she was considering an alternative career because it was Tinseltown that was really sick. In 1995 she worked on a movie with Marlon Brando in County Cork, Ireland, which went bankrupt six weeks into filming - and decided she'd had enough. But times have changed, and Winger is now producing and starring in the low-budget movie drama Big Bad Love, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Her actor husband Arliss Howard is making his directorial debut on the film, playing her ex-husband. Speaking about her decision to give movie-making another try, the feisty actress says, "He talked me into this and I thought 'So long as I have control, it will be OK'. I didn't know how tough it was going to be. Acting is one thing. Being the boss is hell."...
