This was the first of two Extreme Championship Wrestling games produced before the company went out of business.
Was the first wrestling game to be receive a "Mature" (M) rating.
Several magazines banned Acclaim's advertising campaign for ECW Hardcore Revolution due to use of a shortened form of the "F" word. One ad read, in large text, "Real F'n Hard," while another read "Real F'n Fans" and the last read "Real F'n Wrestling." One of the ads showed an image of an ECW wrestler stappling another wrestler in the head with a staple gun.
This game was dubbed the "WWF Attitude" clone. The publisher ACCLAIM had previously made both WWF Warzone and WWF Attitude for the PSX and N64 consoles before losing their contract with the WWF. They picked up the rights to ECW and created this game. This game is the exact same engine used to create WWF Attitude with only names and images changed to suit the ECW roster and images. It did add new moves and taunts, as well as music and sounds for the wrestlers and commentators, but was not enough to just be dismissed as a useless Attitude clone adding nothing to gameplay interest a part from being for die hard ECW fans and those very few who could not get enough of Attitude. Despite graphic, media and name changes, the only new match up in the game is a barbwire match. The mode itself only meant opponents did not spring back off the ropes when running j to them and instead looked like they hit a brick wall.
