Actress Joey King, who gained major fandom with her work in ‘The Kissing Booth’ franchise, has opened up about facing anti-semitism at the age of 12 and also having trauma counselors on the sets of Holocaust series ‘We Were the Lucky Ones’ set’.
Talking about her facing anti-semitism, the 24-year-old actress said it was when she joined Instagram at age 12.
“Within the first couple months I got my first anti-Semitic remark and it would dip in terms of how frequent or how much it would happen, and it would kind of roller coaster in terms of how often I would experience it, but that was shocking when I was that age,” she said.
“Now I just expect it because anti-semitism is not the only thing I experience in terms of bullying online. So it almost feels like one of many symptoms of a grand diagnosis of horrible Internet people. I’m saddened,...

Joey King has nothing against method acting – it’s just not for her.
Especially for projects like her latest, the Holocaust series “We Were the Lucky Ones.”
Based on Georgia Hunter’s best-selling novel of her family’s fight to survive the Holocaust, Logan Lerman stars as Hunter’s grandfather Addy alongside King as his younger sister Halina. Rounding out the cast are Sam Woolf, Robin Weigart, Lior Ashkenazi, Hadas Yaron, Amit Rahav and Eva Feiler.
“I think anyone who is a method actor is truly so brave and amazing, but I’m personally not a method actor,” King tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “And when shooting a show like this, I just don’t know how I could be because having those moments of release in between setups and in between takes with your friends [is needed].”

Thanks to a kick-butt start by "Kung Fu Panda 4" through its first two weekends, the DreamWorks franchise as a whole has passed a pretty major milestone. Across four movies, the animated franchise has now surpassed the $2 billion mark at the box office. Over 16 years and through several enemies, Jack Black's Po has endured multiple decades to help make this one of the biggest animated movie franchises of all time. Skadoosh.
"Kung Fu Panda 4" topped the charts through its first two weekends and has, thus far, taken in $187.1 million worldwide against a very reasonable $85 million production budget -- by far the cheapest entry in the series to date. That has pushed the franchise to just over $2 billion collectively. The highest-grossing entry to date remains 2011's "Kung Fu Panda 2" with $664.8 million worldwide. Interestingly, that's also the only movie of the four that didn't open atop the charts when it debuted.

Ratatouille includes a dark Finding Nemo Easter egg in a pantry scene with a reference to Nemo Brand Caviar. Despite its family-friendly nature, Ratatouille hides dark Easter eggs such as violent scenes and a cynical critic nicknamed "The Grim Eater." Pixar movies often tackle dark topics, and Ratatouille takes it further with hidden sinister references that may have slipped past viewers.
Pixar movies are full of Easter eggs and references to past and future movies, but Ratatouille went a bit too far with a dark Easter egg that connects to one of Pixar’s biggest box-office hits. Pixar is now a powerhouse in the world of animation, and it all began in 1995 with Toy Story, the first entirely computer-animated feature film. Since then, Pixar has brought a variety of stories exploring different cultures, settings, and worlds, and not all of them have been human. Falling into that category is Ratatouille,...

As Marlin the fish once famously put it in "Finding Nemo" when confronted by an unexpected turn for the worse, "Good feelings gone."
Marvel's upcoming animated show "X-Men '97" has come with nothing but good vibes since its announcement, bringing a fresh dose of nostalgia to many a Marvel fan of my generation. I speak for most of us when I say we practically grew up on the original "X-Men" cartoon and developed a Pavlovian response to that absurdly catchy theme song, and the marketing for the revival series has certainly leaned hard into the '90s of it all. Today, however, brings a sobering bit of news on the eve of the project's debut.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, creator, producer, and writer Beau DeMayo has been abruptly fired and will no longer take part in promotion for the series or take a creative role in any future seasons.

For many fans, Pixar's Elemental hasn't garnered the praise it deserves. The film's messages on the effects of discrimination and the desire to honor family while being an individual are a stark reality for many people around the world. And the immigrant experience through the lives of Ember and her family are experiences many can relate to. Elemental handles these topics with grace, taking audiences on a journey of love and self-discovery.
Despite its limited success in theaters, Elemental has been making waves in home viewings, becoming something of a sleeper hit. The deeply personal story by director Peter Sohn highlights the struggles of immigrants and their families. The characters are cleverly created with breathtaking animation and a keen eye for how the Elements interact with their environment. Although it isn't quite as popular as it should be, Elemental has a lot to offer viewers and has many surprising...

Nine years after Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) showed the world how Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), and other emotions controlled most of what happened inside her head, she's ready to come back as a teenager. Pixar has just released the new trailer for Inside Out 2, the sequel to their successful feature about the emotions of a young girl reacting to the events of her life in real-time. Woody's loyalty to Andy can be explained by the theory that he originally belonged to Andy's dad, Andy Sr. The theory suggests that Woody's undying loyalty to Andy stems from his previous bond with Andy Sr., who died of polio. Despite being debunked, the theory explains Woody's determination to stay by Andy's side and his lack of fixation on being played with.
In Toy Story, Andy grows from childhood to his college years, but since only his mother is shown, many fans wonder, "Where is Andy's dad in Toy Story?" Andy's best friend in the movies is his cowboy doll Woody, and one theory posits that Woody first belonged to Andy's absent father. In a near-unprecedented circumstance, all four Toy Story movies are generally considered to be excellent, with the franchise completely escaping the law of diminishing returns, and it was mostly Andy's story.

Marlin lost his whole family in a barracuda attack, shaping his journey to find Nemo in Finding Nemo. The movie's dark themes may suggest that Nemo never existed, and was in fact a coping mechanism for Marlin's grief and loss. Finding Nemo may symbolize the five stages of grief, with Marlin navigating denial, anger, bargaining, despair, and acceptance.
Some viewers believe there is a dark Finding Nemo meaning behind the plot of the 2003 Pixar movie. Directed by Andrew Stanton, the story features Marlin the clownfish embarking on a journey to locate his missing son, Nemo. Though Finding Nemo was a hit with viewers of all ages, the truth in Marlin's search for Nemo may have been bleaker than initially thought. There was one popular belief suggesting Dory had short-term memory loss due to watching her family die. That didn't turn out to be the case based on the events of...

Erik Per Sullivan earned acclaim for his role as Dewey in Malcolm In The Middle, but left acting after the show ended. A Malcolm In The Middle reboot has been in demand, but Dewey is considered an integral part for its potential success. Co-star Frankie Muniz supports Sullivan's decision to retire from acting, acknowledging his desire for a normal life.
Erik Per Sullivan played Dewey on Malcolm In The Middle, but the actor hasn't been seen on screen in a long time. 17 years after Malcolm In The Middle ended, it’s still hailed as one of the best sitcoms of all time. The series owes a big part of its success to the talented actors who play its delightfully dysfunctional family. Malcolm In The Middle made stars out of several of its cast members. However, Sullivan left the acting business shortly after leaving the role of Dewy on Malcom In The Middle behind.

Beta Film has picked up international distribution rights to Latvia’s “Soviet Jeans.” Presented at Berlinale Series Market Selects, the show will premiere at Series Mania in March.
Set in Riga in the late 1970s and based on multiple true stories, it zooms in onto young rock fan Renars (Karlis Arnolds Avots), sent to a mental asylum for political reasons. Undeterred, he starts illegal production of counterfeit U.S. jeans with his inmates, flooding the black market.
“We wanted to make it international,” said Teodora Markova who showruns alongside Stanislavs Tokalovs. They wrote the script with Waldemar Kalinowski.
“We also decided to go for a completely different tone when depicting this period, which so often is shown in this harsh, gloomy way. National Geographic just launched A Real Bug’s Life, a premium wildlife documentary based on the Pixar movie.
Courteney Monroe, president of National Geographic Global Television Networks, said that this is only the start in terms of it adapting Disney IP.
Monroe was asked whether she could see a real-life version of Ratatouille and said it was a “good idea”.
“There is such a rich IP to mine and there’s so much shared DNA between the Nat Geo and Disney brands that we are exploring lots of opportunities,” she said at the TCA press tour. “You can imagine maybe a real Finding Nemo and other franchises there, where there’s so many families with young children on the Disney+ platform that would gravitate to the real world storytelling around this franchise.”
Earlier this morning, Nat Geo renewed A Real Bug’s Life, narrated by Awkwafina, for a second season, due to launch in the fall.

Over time, animation has become more accepted as a legitimate medium for film. The skill and time it takes to create such masterpieces are astounding, and audiences can tell how much passion goes into each film. Since the '90s, companies like Disney and Pixar have dominated the animation film industry, with Illumination coming into play more recently. All the top ten highest-grossing animated films have come from these three companies.
The highest-grossing animated films typically have a moral or overarching theme that is relatable to both kids and adults. They champion friendship and family. Finding Dory is a delightful Pixar sequel that explores self-discovery and the importance of family. Ellen DeGeneres' charming voice acting brings Dory's forgetfulness and unique ability to "speak whale" to life. Despite the physical strain, DeGeneres' dedication to her character pays off, making Dory's "whale speech" a beloved element of Finding Dory.
Finding Dory is yet another winning animated movie from Pixar, but actor Ellen DeGeneres went to some extreme lengths of her own with her whale talk. The eagerly awaited sequel to Pixar's beloved Finding Nemo dives back into the ocean's depths, bringing with it a familiar, amnesiac blue tang fish named Dory. Finding Dory is the best Pixar sequel, as it explores the theme of self-discovery and the importance of family. While Nemo and other beloved characters from the original movie return in the 2016 follow-up, Dory is central to the film's charm, aided by Ellen DeGeneres' entertaining voice-acting.

Willem Dafoe has a face made for film. When the sixty-something actor appears on screen, his prominent cheekbones, wide eyes, and toothy grin are difficult to take your gaze off. Combined with his slender frame and his raspy, gravely, deep voice, the actor’s portrayal of Jesus Christ allegedly prompted Sergio Leone to opine “This is not the face of our Lord, this is the face of Satan!”
Dafoe hasn’t played Satan at all over the course of his career, but he’s certainly played his share of villains, bringing his signature menace to dozens of cinematic crooks and psychopaths. After his first lead role, in Kathryn Bigelow’s 1982 biker drama “The Loveless,” his early parts were largely antagonists to the lead heroes, such as the alluring but frightening criminals in “Streets of Fire” and “To Live and Die in L.A.” The part that arguably brought him the most widespread,...

On October 16, 2023, Disney celebrated 100 years of magic – from movies, television shows, and theme parks. All things considered, however, Disney's most significant impact is the cinematic canon that defined the company. Throughout its history, Disney has had eight distinct eras that shaped the company and changed animation.
Each generation has had highs and lows – some more than others – but each has had its clear place in the Disney timeline. Despite facing various hardships, Disney has continued to delight fans of all ages by giving fairytales a unique spin and creating original stories that are just as timeless. Every Disney fan has their favorite era, but some rank better than others in performance and quality.
Updated by Ajay Aravind on January 9, 2024: Disney has gone through successive eras over the last century, culminating in eight notable generations. Although each time period has its advantages and faults, it's clear that some of them are considerably better than others.

X-Men has yet to produce a $1 billion movie, with Deadpool 2 coming closest at $785 million worldwide. The Mission: Impossible franchise has also not hit the $1 billion mark, with Mission: Impossible - Fallout earning $791 million. Shrek 2 fell only $72 million short of $1 billion, making it the closest film in the franchise to reach that milestone.
Franchises and sequels frequently have $1 billion expectations at the box office, but there are still a handful of popular franchises that have yet to have a movie cross that milestone. The 2010s were responsible for a significant rise in how frequently a movie's box office haul could cross nine figures. Hollywood's increased ability to produce $1 billion box office hits made that achievement the goal for just about every major blockbuster. The various franchises within the Marvel Cinematic Universe have made 10 movies that surpassed this total, while Star Wars has five such box office hits and the Jurassic franchise has four.

Animated movies have a long history of dominating the box office, with only a few holding the record for highest-grossing animated movie. Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks have contributed the most to the history of animated movies at the box office. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Aladdin, The Lion King, Finding Nemo, Shrek 2, Toy Story 3, Frozen, and Frozen 2 have each been the highest-grossing animated movie of all time for various amounts of time.

During a 1963 appearance on The Tonight Show, comedian Carl Reiner said that a 16-year-old named Albert Einstein was the funniest person he knew. That Albert Einstein was too young to be the famed physicist, of course. No, the Albert Einstein getting such high praise was a friend of Reiner’s son Rob. Now, of course, the world knows Rob Reiner as the All in the Family actor who went on to direct the films Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, and A Few Good Men, among other cinematic favorites. And that Albert Einstein — who still doesn’t know why his parents gave him that name — rebranded himself as Albert Brooks and starred in films like Lost in America, Broadcast News, and Defending Your Life. For a new CBS News Sunday Morning segment, Brooks and the younger Reiner ...

Illumination is a rare animation studio, in that they have landed upon a formula for the majority of their films and they seem perfectly content in hewing to that formula no matter what stories are being told. The studio thrives on mid-budget films that bring together a recognizable ensemble, some pop songs, and stories that feel vaguely cribbed from Pixar Animation Studios without being out-and-out plagiarism. Illumination, like DreamWorks, also leans heavily on turning its films into lengthy franchises, which has given us the obnoxious and leaden "Despicable Me" series (including its multiple "Minions" spin-offs), the obnoxious and leaden "Sing" films, and the obnoxious and leaden "The Secret Life of Pets" films. For this holiday season, Illumination is trying to do another original film, but much like the first "Secret Life of Pets", the new film "Migration" is original in name only, while feeling like a flavorless mishmash of "Finding Nemo" and "Ratatouille.

The earliest days of Pixar Animation saw the now-beloved movie studio producing many of the most beloved animated films of all time, while simultaneously changing the film industry with their groundbreaking use of three-dimensional CGI animation. After the success of the first Toy Story in 1995, Pixar quickly followed that film up with 1998’s A Bug's Life and 1999’s Toy Story 2.
These first three films in the late ‘90s established Pixar as the new powerhouse in animation. However, it was in the 2000s that the studio would cement itself as one of the best animation studios of all time. There were many films produced by the studio throughout that decade, such as Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille, but 2001’s Monsters, Inc. arguably tops them all.

In 2021, Sean Ono Lennon was looking for a way to make a music video for one of his parents’ signature songs and feeling creatively stuck—until he had a meeting with former Pixar animator Dave Mullins. The song, 1971’s Happy Xmas (War Is Over), is probably the most popular piece of music John Lennon and Yoko Ono wrote as a couple. But beyond appearing reliably on playlists around the world every Christmas, Happy Xmas (War Is Over) is also a peace anthem, and Sean wanted to reintroduce the song’s message. The song “just felt like it deserved some kind of piece to help get it out there for another generation,” Lennon says. The only problem was that every music video idea seemed to trivialize it. “It almost felt goofy,” Lennon says. “Like a Hallmark kind of thing. What are we going to show, a family sitting around a fire?...

The Polar Express features a talented cast of voice actors and motion capture performers, like Tom Hanks and Daryl Sabara. Hero Boy, played by Daryl Sabara, is the main character who embarks on a quest to the North Pole. Eddie Deezen plays Know-It-All, the nerdy child who is a memorable character throughout the film.
The Polar Express is an animated holiday classic, and here is a complete cast breakdown, including who voices each character. While The Polar Express is animated, it features some pretty big names, with the characters not only sounding like their voice actors but looking like them as well. This is thanks to Robert Zemeckis' signature motion capture technology which was popularized in The Polar Express, although it was used on several other films. The Polar Express has been cemented as an icon of the holiday season, and here's who all appears in the beloved Christmas movie.

Approaches to film scoring have become increasingly eclectic—from jazz and classical to hip-hop and avant-garde—making it more difficult than ever for Academy voters to narrow the field to 15 for Oscar’s shortlist. Variety examines 16 of the possible choices, in alphabetical order:
‘American Fiction‘ – Laura Karpman
Cord Jefferson’s movie—about a Black writer who, as a joke, writes a bad novel that becomes a best seller—has a lead character whose name is Thelonious and whose nickname is Monk. So, to composer Laura Karpman, fashioning a score in the style of the jazz great was an obvious choice.
Much of her score is small-combo, piano-featured jazz, and while she also wrote a massive orchestral and choral score for “The Marvels,” this much smaller but acclaimed film would seem to be her best shot for awards. She has five Emmys, co-founded the Alliance for Women Film Composers, and was...

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Rick and Morty."
Season 7 of "Rick and Morty" was overdue for a Summer-centric episode, and last night's "Wet Kuat Amortican Summer" finally gave it to us. The episode starts off as a standard storyline about Summer trying out a new sci-fi gadget to become popular with her classmates, but it almost immediately ditches the high school stuff for something much darker and cooler. When Morty and Summer get into a fight at a party, the two end up infused together, with Summer mostly the same but Morty stuck as a small deformed mutant attached to Summer's stomach. In other words, he's a kuato, a creature named after the deformed mutant character in the 1990 sci-fi flick "Total Recall."
But despite how this all sounds, the episode is not primarily a parody of "Total Recall." As it turns out, kuatos are surprisingly common...

Frasier’s stint as a guest lecturer is going well enough, but he wants to be promoted to full professor, even though Olivia tells him he needs years of lecturing to attain that. The Cranes might be the smartest family in TV history. At least in sitcom history. In terms of sheer brain power, the "Big Bang Theory" crew certainly have them beat, but Kelsey Grammer's Frasier, his brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce), and ex-wife Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) -- all psychologists -- command a ferocious amount of cultural and academic intellect between them. Heck, add the intuitive prowess of Niles' wife Daphne (Jane Leeves) and the street smarts of the boys' father Martin (John Mahoney) into the mix and you've got a meeting at the minds that could test the very mettle of Mensa.
Across the original series' eleven seasons, Frasier's and Niles' intellects were frequently used as the immovable objects that story plots wound around, crashed into, undercut, and attempted to outpace to generate laughs. The Crane boys were so smart, so many episodes contended, that they would find themselves blithely...

Albert Brooks and Rob Reiner, now both 76, have been best friends since high school, having met in the drama club at Beverly Hills High. (Richard Dreyfuss was also in their class.) Both were what might now be referred to as “nepo babies” in that both of their fathers had successful careers in comedy — Rob as son of the legendary Carl Reiner, creator of The Dick Van Dyke Show, and Albert the son of Harry Einstein (yes — his real name is Albert Einstein), a radio comedian who found fame as a character called Parkyakarkus. Harry might have gone on to greater heights had he not suffered a fatal heart attack moments after his routine at a roast of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in 1958. Eleven-year-old Albert was listening live on the radio that night.

VFX artists on Corridor Crew's "Animators React" series react to Jay Jay the Jet Plane, finding the show to be creepy. The animators take issue with the technology used, which they believe removes any sense of artistic expression from the show. While story and content of animated properties will always be the most important factor, animation quality is also important to a degree, as it can determine how effectively a story is absorbed by audiences.

Despite its flaws, Disney's Hercules is a classic that stands out for its unique animation style, contemporary storytelling, and exceptional casting choices. A planned sequel titled Hercules II: The Trojan War was canceled due to strategic changes in Disney's straight-to-video projects. A modern Hercules follow-up could be successful if it stays true to classic mythology while leveraging the strengths of the original movie and bringing back the compelling cast.
One twenty-six-year-old Disney movie has been long overdue for a sequel, but several factors have held it back from getting a follow-up.
