This is the only "real" bond game I ever played
baron4klyft11 May 2001
Last year Tomorrow never dies was a total hit & miss because there was no stealh on the game and the missions sucked pretty much since 90% it is just plain shooting.

Now EA Games has made my day, although it would be better on PC or 128 bit console this game put you in the shoes of Bond. There are a lot a varieties, sneaking in a mansion, taking advantage on Bond's style to bypass metal detectors.

Now just because it has 1st person perspective this DOES NOT make the game a true FPS. Why? Bond is a secret agent, in most movies he never just kick a door and blast everything, he always use stealth as much as he can. However when the alarm is ringing now he has no choice but blast everything he can and escape, if he can of course.

For shooter fans, they are free to shoot everything if they want since it is also a great challenge as long as they respect their mission parameters thou. I prefer stealth though.

For multiplayer fans, they will be disapointed since it is not supported. Personnally, I do not miss the multiplayer(unless there would be cooperative mode) of Goldeneye since deathmatch is just used to attract non-bond fans who enjoys to play deathmatch games like Quake III. I feel stupid playing as Bond and trying to kill each other in a small location. The N64 version has multiplayer support so there should be no complaint for N64 owners.

And on console deathmatches are very limited compared to PC since you have many limitations. If the game would be on PC then it would be more appropriate since you could have a map editor etc...

I can't wait for the next Bond game on Playstation 2(since TWINE has been cancelled on PS2)!

pretty good for Nintendo and playstation.
kyle-mcdonald14 July 2007
Nintendo version:The Nintendo version of this James bond game is pretty good because: The missions are fun to do they can be hard that makes it more fun to play the weapons you use are pretty good they have lots of action. The way bond looks is pretty good you can see pierce brosnan in him same with the rest of the characters in this game. The voice over actors are pretty good but it would have been better if piece brosnan was in it. Also the game follows the movie pretty much and a few added things here and there so that makes the missions more fun. Also the graphics in this game are pretty good for Nintendo 64.

Overall score ******* out of **********

Bond 19, how to make a great game out of the worst bond film
strike11nitro16 December 2001
It's great to know that someone made a game concerned with gameplay and story (although there are a few plot holes) other than making a buggered up game filled with glitches (ie: Goldeneye). This game goes into detail with what was left out of the movie and puts you in a place to think like a spy instead of a psychotic killer. The missions are often difficult and, finally, includes stealth into the immortal 3D SHOOTER platform. The game requires you to think as opposed to Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. The true downside are the cartoon-like graphics and it's "loading screen". Other than that, this game sets the new standard for it's genre. 8/10

Misses at a wider arc than a hit (PS1 Version)
BinaryCode100118 May 2004
Without even bothering to see the movie yet, I picked this game up when I saw it in video rental stores. Now, wasn't HUGELY into James Bond at this time, but I played GoldenEye with my friends (along with the sag known as "Tomorrow Never Dies"), and thought this game would be good. So, I rented it, took it home, and prepared to have THE WILDEST JAMES BOND ADVENTURE OF MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!

Okay, maybe that wasn't the case, but I will break it down (as always) and tell you how this all went down:

GRAPHICS: Decent, but the character models are blocky and the backgrounds are blandly made. Although graphic clipping occurs rarely, there is a lot of graphical "swerving" going on. I call it "swerving" because if you go up to a wall or something and turn, you will see the wall "move" a little. It's not a big problem, but sometimes swerving occurs even when you're simply turning. The backgrounds are mildly detailed (light fixtures are literally "glued" to the background), and about the only thing "realistic" is Bond's hand or the gun he's holding up. Everything else is blandly detailed. And don't expect enormous Terminator explosions...explosion effects are barely even noticeable. Sometimes blowing up gas canisters only makes the screen flash, and the canister disintegrates with a response of black smoke.

SOUND: Though TND didn't have as much gameplay appeal as TWINE, TND did have decent and pulse-pounding music. The music in TND was fast, exciting, and some songs lasted as long as 2 or 3 minutes. However, in TWINE, no one gave a flying piece of sludge about the music. The songs last at least 20 seconds long, and the music does not get you in the mood for a gunfight. The music practically gets you in the mood to go to sleep. The silenced handgun Bond has makes another appearance, but continues to sound like a silenced weapon. Other weapon effects have nice sound effects to them (like the sniper rifle and the Kazakovich assault rifle), but don't expect much from actual explosions. Accompanying the screen flashes are mainly no other sounds other than the bullet hitting the canister. There may be some explosion sounds, but even THOSE are barely noticeable.

GAMEPLAY: Your basic role is to just go out on SUPER short missions and either kill things are sneak around. There is, however, ONE unique mission in this game, and that is the casino mission that forces you to win a game of BlackJack in order to pass. That's the ONLY unique mission. And...what happened to the driving missions?! In this game, you only use the car to stock up on video camera rockets on this one mission where you have to fight helicopters on the docks. Other than that, your BMW Z8 is useless. There was no real problem with that in GoldenEye (at least I think there's no driving mission there), but here, it suffers terribly. The game is short enough, so it wouldn't hurt to put two decent missions in. Cheat codes also work differently this time...instead of inputting controller codes, you have to get near-perfect scores on missions. The PS1 version also suffers from a lack of multiplayer (as with TND, but according to my GS Pro snapshot archive, there is a multiplayer screen in it somewhere). Replayability is non-existent...the game's just not a good enough hit to play over and over again.

STORY: Exactly the same as the movie's...you're sent out to stop a madman from bombing the world, only this guy is no real madman...he just spits up insults to you and runs. In all the other James Bond games to date, you have to fight the final boss with a special strategy or with just all-out gunplay. However, TWINE has no last boss...in this game, the last boss is just you shooting out reactor panels while blasting away hilariously slow bad guys. Do all that, and you'll already have beaten the game. So, you don't necessarily fight Renard...you're just fighting his plan until he dies.

BOTTOM LINE: Only RENT this game. Do not buy it. If you're a James Bond head who plans to fill your game collection with James Bond games, be my guest. If you're just looking for a good game to pass the weekend, this game is right for you. If you want to go out and buy good James Bond games, try getting the latest James Bond: Everything or Nothing. THAT'S the James Bond game you should waste your allowance on.

FINAL SCORE: 6/10

A strong movie-to-game translation (N64 version)
simonc113815 July 2001
Following the hugely successful GoldenEye video game from 1997, developer Eurocom has taken up the mantle from Rareware and given the N64 one more great game before the machine passes on in favor of the next-generation consoles. The World is Not Enough does not hide the fact that it borrows directly from the formula the made the original so successful, but this is not a bad thing. Indeed, while some things have improved and other things are missing, the game feels like a reunion with old friends. Anyone who ever remotely enjoyed GoldenEye should consider checking this one out.

The World is Not Enough (TWINE) faithfully reproduces the movie's environments. You'll be taken from the bank in Spain to the offices of MI6, from the nuclear facility to the factory on the docks and the nuclear submarine. Character models are done just as nicely, including Bond, Renard, Christmas Jones, Electra, and even a few old classic foes and friends stashed away. Bad guys have new animations as well as hit detectio n; shoot a terrorist in the head and not only will he die, he might stumble and fall down a stairwell. A variety of weapons are at your disposal from sniper rifles to pistols to automatics. Along with these are gadgets from the movie, given to you by R, voiced by John Cleese.

So what's not to like? While the missions adequately convey the sense of being in a Bond mission with regards to both action and stealth, they're a little too linear. There's often only one route from point A to B, whereas the levels are designed to look like there could have been many more. The famous James Bond theme has been omitted, as Eurocom couldn't aquire the rights. Finally, the multiplayer scenarios aren't up to the standards set by GoldenEye, though it's not bad for an occasional round of mayhem.

What it all comes down to is this: There are far better shooters avaliable for the computer. GoldenEye, being three years older, will still feel like the overall better game of the two. But as a game in itself, TWINE is worthy of a purchase by any Bond fan. It's a solid Bond experience, a worthy successor to GoldenEye, a good N64 title, and it's far above the inferior Playstation version.

A BIG Dissapiontment
malcolmallancrossfield23 April 2002
When I first heared that there was going to be The World is not Enough video game for the Nintendo 64, I was so excited. When it finally came out, I was one of the first ones to rent it. I rented it for 7 days, and I got through the whole game!!! The game was to easy and gave out too much hints. A majour dissapointing sequel to GoldenEye. Take my advice and DO NOT RENT THIS GAME.

Sure the guns and gadgets are cool, but one gets tired of a watch lazer that looks like it was taken right from GoldenEye with the exception of being a red color instead of a blue color, a poor excuse for a dart gun, horrible stunner and a stupid grapple hook that can only attach itself to things that are yellow and black.

I think that RARE should of made this game instead of EA who should stick to games there good at making, like sport games and should stear clear of first person shooters and let the masters do the work.

The Ultimate 007 Video Game
bhatia9 December 2000
This game contains gadgets, high-tech weapons, exotic levels, face-to-face villains, and excellent allies. This game contains all characters from the movie and sets standards for more games to come. Just like its shadow GOLDENEYE for 64. I recommend that this game would be bought for N64, not playstation. Reason is, N64 owns Bond, and Playstation (noting Tomorrow Never Dies) does not represent Bond in an exciting way.

Wesley6216 April 2003
im commenting on the n64 version:

there are some aspects that TWINE has that Goldeneye does not:

1 Bots in Multi so u dont have to play single player all the time

2 Multiplayer is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than Goldeneye's

it has better modes like Capture the flag and king of the hill i would reccomend this to any bond fan dont rent this game ever BUY IT!

as for single player it is very nice though short but the graphics are very good and deaths are better

i give this game a 10/10

Great fun, with a real authentic edge.
Matthew Tantony18 March 2001
This video game has a hard act to follow, leading the way after Rare's brilliant GoldenEye. Since the Rare title is one of the all-time great shoot'emups, TWINE has to be good. And it is. The plot of the game closely follows the film, which helps as you can often work your way out of tricky situations by asking yourself "What did he do in the film?" However, in some cases this means that the action is a little predictable. It's nice to see that there is a fine edge of "realism" here - you regularly run out of ammo, it takes a lot of hits to kill people, and you can't shoot civilians or you fail. There's also a wide range of levels, including one where you have to creep around a villa, crawling with guards and security cameras, but you CAN'T let anyone see you, and you CAN'T SHOOT ANYONE AT ALL! The cutscenes are nicely done, as much of the dialogue is lifted straight out of the film so it feels as if you're really in the film. It's nice to hear John Cleese providing the voice of R. The negative points? There are longish loading times between levels and cutscenes, the multiplayer robots are way too hard to play against, and you can't re-enact the boat chase on the Thames. Otherwise, it's great! 10/10

The World Is Not Enough is one of the most exciting video games! The Characters, the action, the shooting, and the sure thrill of excitement makes this game a fun non-stop playing time! Below is a brief look how I think the game is!

Game Play: The game play is very good. There is really basic controls here and is easy to perform. Novice gamers should have a good time here!

The average James bond freak will like this
The_Light_Triton24 April 2006
I'm a fan of 007 video games and i must say this game was impressive. If you mixed this and goldeneye together, you get perfect dark. This game has the elements of a real James bond, but the graphics are the dumps. the characters are over sized and shapeless, and their mouths don't move when they speak - there's speech in this game, unlike goldeneye.

007 is trying to figure out who killed an MI6 agent. he goes to the only person who might know, and that guy gets shot. thus leading 007 on a trail of events.

007 has a nice gun, but that's not enough for him to save the world. He gets a bunch of nifty gadgets and gizmos to finish his job. he gets gadgets such as data scramblers, safe crackers, pen grenades, flash bangs, and everything a MI6 agent needs. But he needs the person with the controller to do his bidding perfectly.

This game is a 9/10 game. Rated T for Teen

Be Bond On The Playstation!
Red_Spud2 January 2001
After the EXTREMELEY poor "Tomorrow Never Dies" it was beginning to look as if EA should never had taken the 007 licence of rare. But now TWINE has proven us all wrong. The game may not be up to the same sort of class in gameplay as GoldenEye on the N64 but it's way better then TND. A must buy for playstation owners who have a dream to be 007 without forking out for an all new console (the outdated N64). Top game (but it's a mystery why they left out a multi-player section).

GAMEPLAY 6/10 MUSIC 8/10 SOUND 9/10 OVERALL 7/10

Bond is back!
bmy2001k22 April 2001
Sometimes, in a tricky situation, I ask myself "What would Bond do?" Apart from the fact it has resulted in me getting slapped by lots of women, and a lot of broken bones, it been quite succesful. Anyway, on with the review.

After the downright AWFUL "Tomorrow Never Dies" game for the PSX, I wasn't particularly looking forward to the next installment. But I can safely say it beats TND in almost every way! This game returns to the first-person format of Goldeneye, after TND failed miserabely with a third-person view, and it works perfectly. It actually makes you feel like you're in the shoes of the great man himself. There's also plenty of guns, gadgets and beautiful women to play with, as well as lots of cutscenes from the movie, which blend in really well. The graphics are some of the best I have seen on any Playstation game as well. But now I must be the villian and point out the games bad aspects. The main problem is that it tries too hard to be a game that it's not. A classic example of this is the fifth level "Night Watch" where you must slip around Electra King's mansion in the small hours bugging telephones and tracing evidence. There's no real problem with that, except that the game tells you to be sneaky and use stealth on your enemies (which you can't kill) but this is a first person-shooter, not Metal Gear Solid!!!!!!! You can't BE sneaky, the game doesn't allow for it. It a shoot-em-up, plain and simple. Don't listen when the game tells you to be sneaky, just run out with your guns blazing and you'll still get through. A few other little gripes I have is that it's very awkward changing weapons, which should be quick and easy in this type of game. You can't re-enact that classic boat chase on the Thames (a real disappointment) and there's still no multiplayer, which could have worked well. Plus it could still be slightly longer. But despite these faults, the good points outweigh them. It's no Goldeneye, but an enjoyable enough shooter which is definetly worth buying even if your not a big follower of the guy who never has a problem with the women (so why aren't I as good as him.........)

+ Well Presented + Excellent graphics + A good range of weapons and gadgets to play with + It's Bond!

  • Still not long enough - Tries too hard to be something it's not - No multiplayer!

Overall: 7 out of 10 (This was a review of the Playstation version)

not as good as tomorrow never dies, but this game is ok. it reflects the game goldeneye for N64, and it seems like a copy off of the nintendo 64 graphics. however, this game is a great game with some of the best graphics on playstation. i give this game an 8/10
