It’s been interesting to watch what fans are enjoying on Disney Plus since its launch late last year, and it’s a hardly ever a surprise to see extremely well-known and beloved films top the charts. Various entries in Marvel’s shared cinematic universe have consistently hung out on the list of the 25 most-watched pieces of content on the service, and it’s common to see huge hits like Toy Story 4 and Moana remain there for a long time.
However, one of the platform’s newest additions has been dominating ever since its release and it’s seemingly not ready to give up its spot quite yet. Hamilton quickly grabbed the top spot after its debut on July 3rd and has been holding onto it firmly for over a week now. There's a fourth Purge movie in the works called The Purge: The Island and during a recent interview with Vulture, writer and director James DeMonaco opened up about the direction he plans on taking the story.
This next movie will be a prequel and it will tell the story of the very first, experimental Purge night. DeMonaco says:
“I said it’s the first experimental Purge, which I don’t know if I was supposed to say, but now I’ve said it, so you have it. Next July 4, it’ll be coming.”
According to the report, the film will be set on Staten Island and will "demonstrate how the New Founding Fathers’s batshit crazy plan to rescue a dying economy turned into a national holiday in which all crime — including rape and murder — is legal for one whole night each year."

Election Year has come and gone and Anarchy has reigned, but there’s still a future for The Purge franchise.
As series mastermind James DeMonaco revealed to Vulture, a fourth film has entered development under the title of The Purge: The Island, while that fabled TV show is finally beginning to coalesce.
First up, though the mainline series. After reaffirming plans to angle The Island as a prequel movie, DeMonaco revealed that next year’s societal thriller will journey back to ground zero – Staten Island, to be specific, where the New Founding Fathers of America hatch their sadistic plan to jump-start a dying economy. Imagine a beta test, only this one allows all crime to be legal for a 24-hour period.

500: The Impact Of The Reformation Today screens Tuesday, July 18 at 5:00pm at the Tivoli Theater (6350 Delmar Blvd, St. Louis) as part of this year’s St. Louis Filmmaker’s Showcase. Ticket information can be found Here

Since 2002, Cinema St Louis has held the St Louis Filmmakers Showcase, a way for movies made by locals or with very strong local ties to be shown to the wider public. A huge number of fascinating features have been given exposure in this way and joining the wide variety (narrative features, experimental shorts and local documentaries) comes 500: The Impact Of The Reformation Today, made by the local Concordia Seminary, one of the world’s premier locations for Lutheran studies and teaching.
It’s the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses, which I can say without fear of hyperbole is one of the most important single events in world history.

Some of President Trump‘s supporters cried media bias Tuesday when NPR tweeted out the full text of a document generally considered to be synonymous with the July 4 holiday: the Declaration of Independence.
National Public Radio took its 29-year on-air tradition of reading the document created by our Founding Fathers to social media as well this year, tweeting out the nation’s founding document line by line.
But the treasured text was lost on some Twitter users, who accused NPR of spamming them, and others who interpreted the tweets as a call for a “revolution” or an attempt to spread “propaganda” against the president.

Fourth of July movies: A few recommended titles that should help you temporarily escape current global madness Two thousand and seventeen has been a weirder-than-usual year on the already pretty weird Planet Earth. Unsurprisingly, this Fourth of July, the day the United States celebrates its Declaration of Independence from the British Empire, has been an unusual one as well. Instead of fireworks, (at least some) people's attention has been turned to missiles – more specifically, a carefully timed North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile test indicating that Kim Jong-un could theoretically gain (or could already have?) the capacity to strike North America with nuclear weapons. Then there were right-wing trolls & history-deficient Twitter users berating National Public Radio for tweeting the Declaration of Independence, 140 characters at a time. Besides, a few days ago the current U.S. president retweeted a video of himself body-slamming and choking a representation of CNN – courtesy of a gif originally created by a far-right Internet...

As Americans celebrate Independence Day, The Words That Built America examines the documents written by the Founding Fathers that helped forge a nation. In many of the great democracies across the world there have been defining many documents that have helped seal in core ideas and ideals. Many of these like Scotland’s 1320 Declaration of Arbroath inspired the Founding Fathers. The declaration was made when the small country declared itself independent and sent the Latin document to the pope in Rome. The most famous part of it reads in English: “…for, as long as but a hundred of us remain...read more...

The New Founding Fathers of America are headed to television – albeit with a twist.
Deadline is reporting today that Blumhouse Television and Universal are beginning to make serious headway on The Purge TV series, which will carve out an “entirely new chapter in America’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness.”
Perhaps most surprising of all is the fact that The Purge spinoff won’t take place during those infamous 12 hours in which all crime is legalized; instead, Blumhouse Television and Universal plan to “reveal what happens the other 364 days of the year and how that law affects people.” Franchise creator James DeMonaco is in the driving seat for this one, and is expected to write, direct and executive produce the spinoff series moving forward. Little is currently known about the number of episodes Blumhouse has planned – ditto for an exact premiere date – but today’s report also notes that a fourth...

Fox’s time-travel comedy Making History hops across centuries to show us the highlights of American history, but a word of warning: If you actually learn anything, that’s purely by accident.
Sunday’s series premiere introduces us to Dan (Adam Pally), a lazy goofball who works in maintenance at a Boston-area college. He has a secret life, though: Using a duffel bag he found among his dead father’s belongings, he’s able to time-travel to any era he chooses. Time travel is all the rage on television. Between Legends of Tomorrow, Timeless, Frequency, Time after Time, 12 Monkeys and last year’s 11.22.63, which I’m currently watching, forget about the butterfly effect; this is deja vu. Yet, Fox decided to add another time traveler to the schedule: the ultra-goofy buddy comedy Making History. I gotta say though, it’s not exactly living up to its title…
Created by Julius Sharpe (Family Guy), Making History is decidedly more Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure than Primer. It centers on Dan (Adam Pally), a lowly, average guy who spends his work days in a janitorial position in a local college and his weekends (and occasional Tuesdays) traveling back to 1775, via a duffel bag time-traveler, to meet his Colonel girlfriend, Deborah (Leighton Meester). Inherited from his late father, Dan is unambitious but certainly not malicious with his gift.

Arrow is a pretty great show when it comes to getting one’s quota of masked superhero violence and well-choreographed fight scenes for the week. However, what happens when the show takes a long and hard look at its own violence and tries to make it mesh with a real world problem? Those curious certainly got their answer in Spectre Of The Gun.
I’m not necessarily against TV shows taking time away from their usual format for a “very special episode.” Series like All In The Family, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and more did it flawlessly, but I admit I wasn’t expecting it from Arrow. Furthermore, I especially wasn...

Hooking up with The Rock to produce a mock mini-musical about millennials isn’t the only thing Lin-Manuel Miranda’s been up to on YouTube. The creator of the mega-hit Broadway musical Hamilton will be live streaming a live performance of The Hamilton Mixtape on the world’s largest video sharing site, too.

Derek Waters and Jeremy Konner’s series “Drunk History” has a simple, but effective setup: An inebriated comedian recounts an event from American history and then a group of actors enact the anecdote lip synching all the dialogue. The series has covered everything from the Haymarket Affair to the Lewis and Clark expedition to the first space walk. But an upcoming episode of the series will tackle the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers. Who better to narrate such a story than Lin-Manuel Miranda, the man behind the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton”? Watch a short clip from the episode below, starring Alia Shawkat (“Arrested Development”) as Hamilton, Aubrey Plaza (“Parks and Recreation”) as Aaron Burr, Bokeem Woodbine (“Fargo”) as George Washington and Tony Hale (“Veep”) as James Monroe.

Billy Bob Thornton is reprising his role as Willie Soke in the upcoming comedy “Bad Santa 2.” Before fans see him as the grouchy, foul-mouthed con who dresses up as Saint Nick, he stopped by Comedy Central’s “Drunk History” to tell us all about one of the country’s Founding Fathers, Benjamin Franklin.
“Hi I’m Billy Bob Thornton and today we’re going to be talking about Benjamin Franklin, one of my heroes,” he says, before being interrupted by Derek Waters who pisses him off by asking him to redo his intro.
“Do me a favor, once we start, let me get three f**cking sentences out before you ask me another god d*mn question,” Thornton annoyingly tells him. Unfortunately for Thornton, Derek continues to tick him off by asking more questions regarding “Bad Santa 2,” including why they chose that title for the sequel, his co-star’s height and more.

Disney’s “Moana” (opening November 23rd) boasts several animation breakthroughs: It will be the first major movie ever translated into Tahitian; the teenage heroine (voiced by Hawaiian newcomer Auli’i Cravalho) has no love interest; and, it’s the first CG feature directed by Disney hand-drawn vets John Musker and Ron Clements (“The Princess and the Frog,” “Aladdin,” “The Little Mermaid”).
“Moana” also marks the feature producing debut of Osnat Shurer, who was in charge of the shorts program at Pixar (“Lifted,” “One Man Band,” “Boundin'”), and later jumped to Disney to head development before getting the promotion. However, Musker said her pre-Pixar experience was just as valuable; before she joined the animation house in 2002, she’d served as an independent documentary producer with shoots in India, Tibet, China, Japan, Israel, and Turkey.

In a move that is both head-scratchingly random and possibly total genius, Ice Cube is about to help Disney produce a modern-day take on Oliver! The musical adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens novel "Oliver Twist" has been a hit for ages with constant revivals of the stage play. Now, according to a new report, an adaptation of the classic Oliver Twist story is going to come to the big screen with an appealing new twist:
The updated take on Oliver Twist is going to be given the Hamilton treatment.
For those unaware, Lin-Manuel Miranda's reworking of the real-life story of Alexander Hamilton- one of our nation's Founding Fathers- has been a phenomenon. The show, while set very much in the period that Hamilton actually lived in, features music...

Could the New Founding Fathers of America be headed to television screens? In short: yes. When asked about the future of the dystopian film series, writer-director James DeMonaco entertained the notion of bringing The Purge to television screens.
Chatting to Cinema Blend on the eve of Election Year‘s home video release – look for threequel to march onto Blu-ray and DVD this week – DeMonaco spoke about the potential of fleshing out multiple story strands via a 10-hour series, as opposed to being limited to the typical framework of a feature film.
Said he: “Dude, it’s so weird you bring that up. Yes! Not an anthology… I guess kind of an anthology — more of an interwoven anthology. They came to me about a TV show, my idea is that you do six or seven storylines. And I would kind of intercut them, use flashbacks.”

Editor’s Note: Alex Horwitz had no way of knowing “Hamilton” would become a cultural phenomenon that would change Broadway and launch his friend Lin-Manuel Miranda into super-stardom. Early on, however, the genre filmmaker (“Alice Jacobs is Dead”) and documentary film editor (“Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger”) could tell Miranda was onto something special. Specifically drawn to the way Miranda was bringing history to life through hip-hop in his early tracks, Horwitz picked up a camera and started capturing the creation of the musical, while joining Miranda on his research and exploration of the Founding Fathers.
In anticipation of the “Hamilton’s America” premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 1 and its television premiere on PBS’s “Great Performances” on October 21, IndieWire reached out to Horwitz to find out more about his new film, backed by RadicalMedia. What we got was this detailed...

The Law Is A Ass #395
There’s an old joke I’m not going to repeat. It’s long; not very good; and, worst of all for a joke, not particularly funny. I bring it up because it’s punchline, “You can’t get there from here,” has a great bearing on the comic we’ll be discussing today.
What comic? My pun-ishing headline indicates, it’s a comic featuring Daredevil, Matt Murdock, and a change of venue in a trial. And that means it’s Daredevil/Punisher: Seventh Circle.
We learned in the first issue of this mini-series that there’s this gangster named Sergey Antonov, see, and he’s a bad man, see. How bad? Well, he didn’t shoot a man in Reno just to watch him die, but he poisoned a rival gang’s boss’s Christmas turkey just to get him out of the way.

TNT’s The Last Ship has docked again for the hiatus, but not before dealing the Nathan James crew a big win… followed by a couple of blows.

Yes, the team was able to surgically strike at the individual regional leaders, though Roberta Price proved to be a slippery one, sneaking away to collaborate with mastermind Allison Shaw on one last attack on the James. Shaw, though, wound up putting a bullet in her ally’s bean, before escaping the White House to play the final ace up her sleeve — kidnapping Chandler’s kids.

A few hints of stagnation aside, this franchise remains a terrifyingly trenchant dystopia. A brutal vision of an America not far removed from our own. I’m “biast” (pro): love the previous films
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I can’t figure out why the Purge movies haven’t been more successful. Oh, they’ve done fine financially, particularly thanks to their very low budgets. Election Year reportedly cost only $10 million to produce (and that’s many multiples of the budgets of the first two films), which is pocket change in Hollywood, and has grossed more than $100 million worldwide, and it’s only just opening today in the UK, so it will add to that tally. But they don’t seem to have had much cultural impact, which is odd seeing how this franchise continues to be one of...

★★☆☆☆ The New Founding Fathers of America have decreed that every year on 12 March for the space of twelve hours all criminal law will be suspended. If you want to attack someone you can, assault and murder are not only permitted but encouraged as a way of collectively purging the populace of all their negative energy and reducing crime year-round. Starring Ethan Hawke, the inaugural The Purge was a surprise low-budget hit and with its small, house siege scale, the silliness of the premise was not an obstacle to a bit of fun. The follow-up, The Purge: Anarchy, had a larger budget and with it more ambition in basically taking us outside on Purge night and remaking The Warriors in the process.

Lost's Jeremy Davies has been cast as a villain in the upcoming fourth season of the Sleepy Hollow TV show on Fox. TV Line reports he will play an "eccentric and outspoken tech mogul" billionaire Malcolm Dreyfuss, who is "seeking other worlds to conquer." Sleepy Hollow's 13-episode season four, which is set in Washington D.C., is slated to premiere mid-season on Fridays at 9:00pm Et/Pt, opposite NBC's Grimm. The report calls the Dreyfuss character "...a dark mirror to Tom Mison's Crane, since he represents capitalism and democracy gone awry — a perversion of the American dream that Crane and the Founding Fathers fought so hard to establish." Last week, the supernatural drama series cast Janina Gavankar in the recurring role of Diana, a Homeland...

From the stereotypical ones with glasses to the ones who are just a little nerdy on the inside, some of our favorite TV characters are the ones who are total geeks.
Here are 13 of those geeks we adore so much, we'd love to share a drink with them.
1. Liz Lemon (30 Rock) She can be awkward, that's for sure, but can you imagine anyone more fun to hang out and have a cocktail with than 30 Rock's Liz Lemon? 2. Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory) Listen, Sheldon Cooper is a difficult guy, so it might not be that fun to hang out with him in general. But when he starts drinking? Who wouldn't want to be around for that? 3. Chuck Bartowski (Chuck) If there's such a thing as a cool geek (and come on, there totally is) then Chuck Bartowski, played by Zachary Levi, fits the bill. We'd definitely love to share...

USA Network has pushed the premiere of its new Ryan Phillippe action series “Shooter” again – this time to fall.
This represents the second time “Shooter” has been delayed. The show was originally scheduled to premiere on July 19, but was pushed back to July 27 in the wake of recent shootings, including the attack on police in Dallas.
But now with additional shootings dominating headlines, including the most recent Baton Rouge police killings, the network and studios Paramount TV and Universal Cable Productions have decided the climate isn’t right this summer for the show.

I’m not a typical film critic; in fact, I’m not a film critic at all. I’m a sociologist that studies fear with a fondness for horror films. What I love to talk about is the ways in which horror movies, in this case The Purge: Election Year, hold a mirror up to society, reflecting both our fears and our secret (or not so secret) desires.
There is no guesswork required in Election Year; this is no funhouse mirror, but rather a pretty direct reflection of where we are today. Election Year picks up where Anarchy left off, with growing opposition to the Purge: on the pro-Purge side we have a Christian minister backed by the New Founding Fathers (and a super creepy bishop), and on the other side a career politician (who happens to be female, white, and blonde) that wants the Purge gone for good...

“Mr. Robot” launched a massive Facebook Live event earlier today, which will continue into tomorrow and air in 13 countries across the world. Blasting out many reminders to tune in and warning that the revolution is coming, the event is actually a Facebook page hack by the show’s fsociety, who rants about the beginning of the revolution against Evil Corp. The rants will also reach the U.K., Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Canada, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia and India — specific both in message and language to each country. Immediately following the rant is a clip of the first 1.5 minutes of the show’s Season 2 premiere, which will officially air next week on July 13th on USA Network.

I firmly believe that all media is political, that you cannot separate the political component from a cultural artifact anymore than you could strip out narrative or theme. I usually try to only be at about a six out of 10 in terms of political content when writing these reviews because I worry that I might come off as too singularly focused and, if I’m being completely honest, because I’m concerned that my analysis is not nearly sophisticated enough to be my leading edge. I’m throwing that out of the window for The Purge: Election Year partly because it is such an aggressive political piece and partially because other than the political content it isn’t offering much beyond the established Purge formula. If you’re the kind of person who desires no politics in their media criticism I can tell you that The Purge: Election Year is...

Turn to any television network over the next few months and the height for political dissension in America will be at its most aggressive level. It’s during these specific times that my frustration with the political machine turns the most negative and disheartened, making a film like The Purge: Election Year seem more true-to-life than a work of fantasy. It’s this aspect, along with a clever marketing campaign utilized during the election year, which makes this third installment in the franchise far more interesting than it otherwise might have been.
Social commentary in genre films is nothing new, George A. Romero, director of Night of the Living Dead, has done it exceptionally well in his zombie trilogy. While The Purge: Election Year squanders many opportunities to provide insight through exploitation, its moments of connective social commentary are effectively startling and stimulating. It makes sense that James DeMonaco was the screenwriter and a co-producer on the remake of John Carpenter’s breakthrough Assault On Precinct 13. It is clear this time that the model he is chasing is the John Carpenter model, and there is a strong Escape From New York vibe to the best moments in The Purge: Election Year, a film that is far more action/thriller than overt horror. It feels like DeMonaco has been remaking his own movie with each new chapter of The Purge, trying to refine it into the film he originally wanted to make. I think the first film is a mess, and it’s a case of a budget totally defining what something is instead of the idea being the primary consideration. They created this world with this major cultural event at the center of it, and they made an entire film set inside one family’s house.

The techno thriller “Mr. Robot” became a surprise cult success last year. It received widespread critical acclaim and gained a rapid popularity online. The series follows Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek), a cyber security engineer by day and master hacker by night who joins fsociety, a secret hacktivist collective that seeks to bring down Evil Corp, one of the biggest conglomerates in the world. At the end of last season, fsociety succeeded in bringing Evil Corp down, but they’re only just learning the true cost of such an action.

The Purge franchise has had an interesting three-year history. I remember when the first trailer came out, almost everyone was excited by the concept. The idea of having any crime, including murder, being legal for 12 hours sounded like the perfect idea for a horror movie, but then everyone actually saw the movie. People complained that they took the interesting concept of the Purge and turned it into a standard home invasion flick. By the time I actually saw the movie, my expectations were so low I actually enjoyed the hell out of The Purge. I still believe it is an underrated horror movie, maybe not the movie everyone was expecting, but I still found it to be relatively scary and entertaining for a low budget horror film. The Purge: Anarchy came out the following year, and that seemed to be what everyone asked for. Seeing the actual Purge on the...

A ludicrous premise revisited – once a year, for a 12-hour spell, all crime is legal and cops and hospitals can’t help you! The first The Purge was a tight if unremarkable home invasion thriller while Purge: Anarchy opened things up, taking the bloody action to the streets. Both scored big box office (and home viewing), so now the third chapter arrives in the form of The Purge: Election Year, another ridiculous, but worthwhile exercise in violence and ham-fisted political commentary.
Like the first sequel, The Purge: Election Year focuses on a handful of innocents who, for various reasons, find themselves out on the streets during the Purge. Frank Grillo returns from part two as Leo Barnes, now promoted to the Secret Service, assigned to protect Charlie Roam (Elizabeth Mitchell), a female senator whose family is murdered during the purge in an 18-years-earlier prologue. “The Purge: Election Year,” is the third installment in the “Purge” franchise, but after its two terrifying predecessors this horror disappoints. “The Purge” takes place in a futuristic United States where crime is non-existent because of a policy put in place by The New Founding Fathers — one night each year, any and all crime is allowed for 12 hours. “The Purge: Election Year,” much like “The Purge: Anarchy” before it, wears its vintage John Carpenter allegiance on its sleeve,” wrote TheWrap’s Dave White. “DeMonaco and editor Todd E. Miller only let up the action in order to draw your attention to some.

The escalation of terror has dialed up a few more notches as writer/director James DeMonaco takes us further down the hole of first world genocide in The Purge: Election Year. What began behind fortified walls and a false sense of modest superiority to show how no one was safe when bloodlust, greed, and jealousy ruled mankind soon entered the outdoors to find the government blatantly enforcing its own thinly veiled mantra of “kill the poor” when the public stopped doing it for them. The only ones truly protected were these New Founding Fathers (Nffa) and all their friends possessing Level 10 clearance and above. Purge Night allowed murder and whatever else, but America’s new leaders would be spared since this grand gift was theirs. Until now.
