Argentinian voice actress Cecilia Gispert was the Latinamerican voice actress of Candy. She also sang both the opening and ending themes, performed by Mitsuko Horie in the original Japanese version.
The show was based on the manga comic series by author Kyôko Mizuki and illustrator Yumiko Igarashi, but their collaboration came to an abrupt end when Igarashi claimed exclusive copyright on her illustrations, and started producing merchandise based on the show without permission from Mizuki or animation studio Toei. Following their dispute and a series of lawsuits, it was decided that both parties held equal copyrights, but that Igarashi had to obtain Mizuki's permission for any business purposes. As a result of ongoing animosity, the series can no longer be legally broadcast or sold on DVD, and is only available as bootlegs.
The series was broadcast in the Netherlands between 1984 and 1987, and was very popular. However, due to a dispute between the makers concerning copyright issues, only 52 of the 115 episodes were ever broadcast. Fans who didn't get the closure they needed started petitions to get the rest of the series back on screen, but to no avail. Illegal copies and unlicensed DVDs are widely available on the internet, though.
