No doubt eager to capitalize on the upcoming live-action adaptation, Anchor Bay Entertainment and its subsidiary Manga Entertainment are gearing up for a deluxe rerelease of the original animated Ghost in the Shell. First released in Japan and the Us in 1995, the landmark science fiction film by legendary director Mamoru Oshii is one of the most visionary and influential films in the “cyberpunk” subgenre that exploded onto the silver screen with Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and enjoys a longstanding literary tradition thanks to authors like William Gibson and Neal Stephenson. Taking an unmistakably Japanese (and indubitably Oshii) approach to the genre, Ghost famously features both mesmerizing action sequences that inspired the Wachowskis in the direction of The Matrix, and lengthy meditations on transhumanism, existentialism, and spirituality in a hypercapitalist dystopia where human bodies and memories are subject to the same means of production and reproduction as any material resource.

I don't know if you've seen this already or not as it's been online for awhile. Either way, it's still really cool. This is a cyberpunk samurai anime commercial for Murphy's Irish Stout. It was created around 1998 by Hiroyuki Kitakubo (Blood: The Last Vampire), Kazuchika Kise (Ghost in the Shell), and Hiromasa Ogura (Ghost in the Shell). It only aired in the UK in the 90s, so chances are many of you haven't seen it yet. I think you'll really like this. Thanks to io9 for the heads up on this awesomeness. ...

The first 8-minutes of the new Ghost in the Shell: Arise anime series has been released online! I like what I've seen of this series so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the story plays out. This is a four part series that reveals the origin of Motoko Kusanagi, a.k.a. The Major, and how the Section 9 team came together.
The story is "set in 2027, one year after the end of the fourth non-nuclear war. Newport City is still reeling from the war's aftermath when it suffers a bombing caused by a self-propelled mine. Then, a military officer implicated in arms-dealing bribes is gunned down.
"During the investigation, Public Security Section 9's Daisuke Aramaki encounters Motoko Kusanagi, the cyborg wizard-level hacker assigned to the military's Secret Unit 501. Batou, a man with the "eye that does not sleep," suspects that Kusanagi is the one behind the bombing.

Vampires. Before Twilight, they were actually cool. Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Van Helsing, Blade, Blood: The Last Vampire, Underworld and countless other titles I could mention meant that vampires were something to be feared and respected. Now nobody can talk about them without first making it very clear that sparkly metrosexuals are not your thing, otherwise the conversation gets really awkward, really really fast.
But in the world of gaming, things have been substantially more preserved – you can find all kinds of vampire lore with some differences here and there in all kinds of games. The Castlevania series immediately comes to mind… or perhaps you preferred the convoluted setting in the Legacy of Kain series, or the dark, leather-clad style of Blood Rayne.
Whichever vampire-oriented video game series you choose from, you can’t go wrong. Vampires in gaming are still respectable. Caine help us all if a Twilight video...

Even if you're not a big Anime/Manga fan, chances are you have heard of Ghost In The Shell. Personally I think there's only a handful of really great ones, and this (at least the original one anyway) is one of them. Now fans can look forward to a brand new series called Ghost In The Shell: Arise sometime in 2013. Details are minimal, but according to Twitch, Kise Kazuchika (Blood: The Last Vampire, Dennou Coil, Neon Genesis Evangelion and of course the previous Ghost In The Shell) will direct with Ubukata Tow on board as writer. It is not know how - or if - this will tie in with the original Manga by Shirow Masamune.

Blood-c: The Last Dark is the film that serves as closure to the 2011 anime series. The CW's Arrow may be departing from any particular Green Arrow comic story-lines, but they are certainly dipping into the cast of characters that appear on the page. The latest is Walter Steele, who in the comics is CEO of Queen Industries. He seems to be playing a similar role in the show. According to Variety.. Salmon will play Walter Steele, a former business associate of the late Robert Queen and the No. 2 executive at Queen Consolidated. He married Moira Queen following her husband's death at sea and the disappearance of her son, Oliver. Salmon can be seen on the big screen soon in Resident Evil: Retribution, but he is probably most familiar to CBMers for his role in Punisher Warzone. He has also popped up in the likes of Alien Vs Predator, Blood: The Last Vampire and all three of Pierce Brosnan's James Bond movies.

Eleven years after the arrival of landmark anime Ova Blood: The Last Vampire the hugely popular action-horror launched by supervising producer Mamoru Oshii (Ghost In The Shell) and screenwriter Kenji Kamiyama (Eden Of The East, Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex) is finally getting the animated feature treatment.I doubt that anyone quite understood what they were launching when they created the story of Saya, a teenaged vampire hunter, but the original 48 minute animation has since spawned multiple video games, manga, two animated television series (Blood+ and Blood-c) and an ill-fated live action feature. But so far it has not appeared on cinema screens in animated form. That changes in 2012 with the arrival of Blood-c: The Last Dark. The feature length installment of the...

"Ninjas. Damn." The line that got Mark sold on The Warrior's Way. So what's the movie itself like? Here's his review...
In the abundance of trailers jostling for position each time you visit the multiplex, somewhere between car adverts and that bloody Orange ad for Gulliver's Travels that I'm starting to worry will just go on forever, someone occasionally makes you sit up and pay attention.
And if you've seen the trailer for The Warrior's Way, it's just one line of dialogue from alcoholic gunslinger Geoffrey Rush. "Ninjas. Damn."
Cowboys are cool. Ninjas more so. It's this kind of combination of Western elements with cool stuff that's expected to serve Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens well next summer, but in the meantime, we have another attempt to mash up Hong Kong martial arts cinema with Western B-movie in just the kind of post-colonial misstep that Hollywood seems to make over and over again these days.

As usual, only those of note (as decided by me) are listed below, and the list is by no means exhaustive.
In addition, are you caught up on Camera Obscura yet? We have the first seven episodes in one spot including a neat little recap to help refresh your memory should you have forgotten the story so far, what with Episode 7 being released yesterday.
And if you are on Netflix, make sure to browse through The Foywonder's crazily Massive List of New Netflix Instant Streaming Horror Titles.
Don't forget to come back and tell us in the comments section below what you thought of Saturday's horror on TV offerings. Did you like this list?...

To Kill A Mockingbird At 50 might just be the TV choice of the week, as we round up the next week's telly. Plus, as usual, there's a lot of films to get through...!
A new comedy show launched last Friday, and its second show airs tonight, July 2nd at 11:05pm on Channel 4. I'm far from Patrick Kielty's biggest fan, but any outlet for comedians of the calibre of the planned guests is a welcome one. Politics, news, and sporting losses are always easier to take when dished out by funny people and Rich Hall, Jack Whitehall, Andi Osho and Kevin Bridges do just that in an appropriate bar setting in Stand Up For The Week.
Family Guy continues its Star Wars specials on Sunday, July 4th, with Something, Something, Something, Dark Side. We think it's as good a pairing as Robot Chicken, Legos, or thumbs can manage.

Empire reports that FilmNation Entertainment is bringing Christopher Pike’s teen vampire book series “The Last Vampire” (not to be confused with the Japanese anime and subsequent live-action adaptation “Blood: The Last Vampire”) to the big screen. The film will follow Sita (aka Alisa Perne), a 5000 year-old vampire Sita who looks like a teenager, which allows her to blend in with the high school crowd and, no doubt, cash in on all the “Twilight” high school audience. While sure, everyone knows this is entirely possible because of the popularity of “Twilight”, FilmNation is quick to point out that “The Last Vampire” was published well before Stephenie Meyer’s books. In any case, expect plenty of teen angst, sparkling vampires, and human-vampire love proclamations, since while the female lead is a vampire, the male lead is human, basically making it the reverse of “Twilight”. There have been six books in the series so far,...

Back in November we got word of Zhang Ziyi's next project, the Wayne Wang directed English language film Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. However, word comes from THR that Ziyi (citing scheduling conflicts with her other project The Grand Master) has been replaced with Li Bingbing (The Forbidden Kingdom), plus Hugh Jackman will have an unbilled cameo in this adaptation of the Lisa See novel of the same name which tells the story of the lifelong friendship of Lily and Snow Flower and their imprisonment by rigid cultural codes of conduct for women. Jeon Ji-Hyun (Blood: The Last Vampire) has also joined the cast. This will be Wang's first film in China and with Jackman's involvement marks another big name Hollywood actor to join a production in China after Kevin Spacey joined Inseperable last month. No word if Ziyi is still producing the film, but the production isn't...

Beijing -- During its first day of shooting in China, director Wayne Wang's "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" added Hugh Jackman just as it lost China's biggest actress, Zhang Ziyi.
Jackman will join the English-language drama at month's end at the Hengdian Studio outside Shanghai, local media reported Tuesday, calling his role the male lead. Jackman's publicist said that "at this point in time, he is doing an unbilled cameo."
In either case, it would be Jackman's first project in China, adding him to a growing list of Hollywood stars -- including most recently Kevin Spacey -- who are coming East to work in the world's fastest-growing movie market.
Meanwhile, Zhang's manager said the actress, who was to have co-produced the film set in rural 19th century China, dropped out "because of scheduling conflicts."

The three films under scrutiny here are difficult to speak about at length, but for quite different reasons. Hence their being mushed into a single article. A Prophet It’s hard to talk about A Prophet without spoiling it for people who haven’t seen it yet. It is complex without being confusing, familiar without being formulaic and violent without being vulgar. Go and see it if you still can. Or get the Mesrine box set on DVD. Even though the two are quite different. Ninja Assassin Here are three things you should do just before you go to bed if you want to have a series of violent dreams: watch Ninja Assassin, play Grand Theft Auto 4 and read David Simon’s Homicide. I racked up all three in a row last week, and my mindscape was more than a little warped that night. But there is, of course, a difference between the listed activities.

Some years we get a plethora of movies that are a perfect convergence of misguided and awful and amazing in their ineptitude. Not every year can bestow on us a Punisher: War Zone. This year, only my top pick got the blend right. These are movies that get some parts of the mix right, movies I know are awful, but I had a fun time watching them anyway, Whether it be my mood and the conditions with which I saw them or I just wanted to turn my brain off, these are the movies that made my Craptastic list.
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li It's possible that Chris Klein's performance is entirely intentional. That he meant to an awesome Paul Walker imitation and rock a sweat denim jacket and utter badass catchphrases like "Nash Out!" But he is but one small piece in this terrible pie.

I saw a lot of terrible films this year, and these are some of the worst. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they aren’t enjoyable of course, and I take quite a bit of pleasure from watching a bad film. They’re in no particular order, and there are links to any that I reviewed in full. Enjoy! Angels and Demons Rome itself was the sole highlight of this absolute shocker. I enjoyed how the scientists at the Cern Large Hadron Collider were portrayed as being a bit iffy about the science behind their experiments. Relentlessly idiotic. Dragonball: Evolution Did anyone else watch this? This is the best film of the year based on a Japanese anime series…oh wait, that would be Blood: The Last Vampire (see below). 80 minutes of big hair, American accents and rubbish special effects. Terminator Salvation Some excellent action set pieces were the only...

No One can fail to have noticed the recent surge of interest in vampires, like a throbbing vein in popular culture.
On TV, we have True Blood, The Vampire Diaries and Being Human, while undead bloodsuckers have also invaded cinema this year in the form of Let The Right One In (released last year in the USA), Blood: The Last Vampire, Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant and The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
So why are vampires in vogue at the moment? New Moon director Chris Weitz has given his views on the phenomenon.
Weitz said: "The only thing I can think of is that it is a very adaptable metaphor.
"In the 80s the vampire myth would have been about Aids; in the 90s, drug addiction. Nowadays, maybe it is about restraint and desire but I cannot explain why there are any number of series of books, movies and stuff about vampires.

“Blood: the last Vampire” is an interesting proposition, not only because it sees Jeon Ji Hyun (“My Sassy Girl”), one of Korea’s most popular actresses, making her English language debut, but also since it represents one of the few Hollywood Japanese anime adaptations to make a real effort to build upon its source material. The film is based upon the 2000 anime from Production I.G of “Ghost in the Shell” fame, which was directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo (one of the key animators who worked on the classic “Akira”), and was helmed by Chris Nahon, who previously had cross-cultural cinematic experiences with the French-English outings “Empire of the Wolves”, and “Kiss of the Dragon”, arguably one of Jet Li’s better Western efforts. Adding to its pedigree is the presence of Corey Yuen, one of Hong Kong’s most prolific and best known action directors, who recently worked on the...

Calling from Japan, director Ronny Yu granted ShockTillYouDrop.com an interview to chat about his episode of Fear Itself : "Family Man." His entry was one of the few that made the airwaves when the show ran last year; five episodes went unseen but are now being released in a collection by Lionsgate Home Entertainment on September 15. Below you'll find our full conversation as Yu talks about the show's challenges, why it disappeared from NBC after only eight episodes, his heartbreaking involvement in Blood: The Last Vampire and more. ShockTillYouDrop.com: How'd you get involved in Fear Itself and when did they first approach you about doing the show? Ronny Yu: It must go back almost two years ago. Oh, and it appears Paramount has decided to begin releasing the Blu-ray editions of their films before releasing the DVD editions. They are starting with Dance Flick on September 8... It'll be interesting to see if it gets more people to adopt the high-def format once bigger named releases starting hitting the shelves. The Class This one made the #6 spot on my list of top ten movies of 2008 so it should be obvious I think it is the one film releasing this week you need to watch.
