Idiotic title but okay porn
Rather than perpetuate the title that insults British comedy, I will refer to this baby as ANGELA'S FOURSOME, the moniker applied when I watched it. It plays well enough, as a soft-core sex movie, with hardcore insert footage.
Surprisingly lyrical opening (though print shredding is a problem) has wife Jill Sweete riding Keith Erickson in slow motion, giving the effect of a soft-X shampoo commercial on TV. Second sequence has Suzanne Fields playing a secretary at her typewriter as a guy in the office tries to put the make on her. Their company processes films, but no more work is coming in and they're reluctant to handle porno, for fear of being jailed. Plan: to use 2 machines to process the lucrative stuff at night on the sly. As a front, they'll also be processing kiddie shows, to fool the authorities. Erickson owns the firm.
Two girls watch one of the movies and get horny, cuing lesbian sex. Erickson arrives and joins them for troilism. An eclectic soundtrack here ranges from "Clair de Lune" to "Aquairus".
Partner in A.J. Labs arrives and announces that Sargent (sic) Harrison is on the way over with the police to raid them. Harrison is played by creepy porn regular Adam Ward, who stumbles over his lines, fomenting about how he's out to root out communist-inspired pornography.
Our heroes fool the sgt. with the kid stuff, but then come on the dumb idea of hypnotizing him. They seek out Carolyn Roberts, a hip hypnotist from Las Vegas. (I'm old enough to know this is a riff on Pat Collins, popular performer who I saw often on TV, particularly on Johnny Carson's show in the '60s). They get Carolyn to shoot a brief film that they can show to the sgt. in order to hypnotize him.
The post-hypnotic suggestion is: If you see any nudity and folks doing something naughty, instead it is just them doing something nice, clean and American, like dancing. This ruse works on Ward, as we see soft-core humping and odd choices of music play including Francis Lai's LOVE STORY theme and George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord", all while the shampoo commercial visual mode recurs.
Ward's reaction to all this is: "Terrific!". Something Weird's version is quite abbreviated, virtually soft-core, and ends abruptly.
Why those classic low-brow British comedies begun by CARRY ON SERGEANT are invoked in the title is a mystery -just because a character is a sgt. doesn't seem to me to be enough to merit the desecration. Given potentially interesting material like the behind-the-scenes of porn processing, and a Vegas hypnotist's stage act, this low-effort film is a bust.
